This publication focuses on the health and safety issues of the supply chain of solid biofuels with the objective to highlight commonly used mitigation methodologies to promote a better working environment when dealing with solid biofuels. It has been compiled as a joint effort by experts active in Tasks 32, 36, 37 and 40 of the IEA Bioenergy Agreement, with their own specific fields of expertise. Only through this cooperation, it was possible to touch upon the full range of issues in one publication that one may come across when developing projects in which solid biomass fuels are produced, traded or used. The properties of a biomass material and the intended use determine how the material should be safely transported and stored. Self-heating, off-gassing and dust explosions are significant challenges for the industry that have already resulted in significant losses of capital investments and even tragic loss of life. Likewise, exposure to biologically active material, such as moulds and spores may form a serious hazard for the health of workers involved. With the growth of the bioenergy sector, it is important not only that opportunities for bioenergy are implemented in an efficient economic manner, but also safely.

The primary function of a mixer is to keep a fluid in constant motion. All mixing applications require varying degrees of small-scale turbulence and bulk flow. The performance of a submersible mixer is measured by the thrust that it produces, while the strength of the bulk flow is dependent on the total amount of installed thrust. In a mixer, the fluid quickly flows past the propeller, and as a result, the current is mainly axial. The fluid will also obtain a rotating velocity, or a swirl, though this is significantly less than that of the propeller. During the process, the total amount of energy increases in the form of static pressure and kinetic energy. The static pressure creates the mixer’s thrust. The kinetic energy is caused by the fluid’s rotation and is usually not desirable. Therefore, to obtain maximal static pressure, or thrust, the rotation of the fluid should be minimised where possible. This can be achieved by creating a pre-swirl of the water opposite the propeller rotation. The main objective of this master thesis is to develop and construct a set of guide vanes, capable of producing the pre-swirl needed to eliminate the rotational velocity of the fluid, and verify this through testing. To be able to carry out tests in small tanks, scaled down models of the 4620 mixer were developed, and manufactured with SLS technique in Duraform PA. Furthermore, a test rig was constructed with the purpose of measuring the mixer’s thrust. Mixer thrust test results reveals that by applying guide vanes to a mixer, the mixer thrust increases by approximately 10-20 % compared to a normal mixer, depending on whether or not a jet ring is used. The mixer’s efficiency increases by 1-5 % compared to a normal mixer. Tests with the mixer’s jet shows that by using guide vanes, the jet becomes more stable, and obtains a higher velocity. After evaluating seven different concepts, a full scale prototype was manufactured with the SLS-method. Performance tests with this prototype, En mixer kallas även omrörare, eftersom dess huvuduppgift är att hålla vätska i rörelse. Vid all typ av omrörning krävs någon form av turbulens och bulkflöde. Mixerns dragkraft är det som avgör hur stort bulkflödet kan bli. I en mixer passerar vätskan propellern snabbt och strömningen är på så vis huvudsakligen axiell. Vätskan sätts även i rotation, men rotationshastigheten på vätskan är mycket mindre än propellerns hastighet. Då vätskan passerar propellern ökas den totala energin i form av statiskt tryck och rörelseenergi. Det statiska trycket ger upphov till dragkraften. Rörelseenergin kommer av att vätskan sätts i rotation och är i många fall inte önskvärd. För att få maximalt statiskt tryck eller dragkraft ska därför vätskans rotation vara så liten som möjligt. Detta kan åstadkommas genom förrotation av vattnet. Målet med detta examensarbete är att utveckla ledskenor som kan skapa den förrotation som krävs för att eliminera vätskans rotationshastighet, samt att genom tester verifiera att detta fungerar. För att kunna genomföra tester i små tankar tillverkades nedskalade modeller av mixern 4620 med SLS-teknik i Duraform PA. Dessutom tillverkades en testrigg med syfte att mäta mixrarnas dragkraft. Testresultat för modellerna visade att vid användandet av ledskenor ökar mixerns dragkraft med mellan 10-20 % beroende på om mixern utrustats med jetring eller inte, jämfört med en vanlig mixer. Verkningsgraden var vid användandet av ledskenor mellan 1-5 % högre än för en vanlig mixer, beroende på om jetring användes eller inte. Jetstråletester på modellerna visade att jetstrålen blir längre, stabilare och får en högre hastighet vid användande av ledskenor och jetring. En fullskalig prototyp tillverkades genom friformsframställningsmetoden SLS, efter att sju koncept tagits fram och utvärderats. Dragkraftstester gjordes på prototypen på ITT Flygt i Lindås, som visade att dragkraften ökar med mellan 5-15 % beroende på vilken propellervinkel som användes och om mixern var u
