A study of the effect of satietin (SAT) on food consumption by infusing artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) in one group of rats fed ad libitum (CON), infusing human SAT in a second group fed ad libidum and infusing aCSF in a third group that is pair fed (PF) reveals that the SAT-treated and PF groups exhibit lower levels of body weight and food and water intake compared to the CON group. Analysis of plasma reveals the absence of variations between the two groups in parameters such as metabolites, nutrients, hormones and differential white cell counts. A second experiment in which the animals are kept in metabolic cages and given a CSF or SAT infusion reveals suppression of food and water intake for the first day and lower weights for 3 days in the SAT group.
