Comprehensive measurement of gene expression using high-density nucleic acid arrays (i.e. microarrays) has become an important tool for investigating the molecular differences in clinical and research samples. Consequently, inclusion of discussion in biochemistry, molecular biology, or other appropriate courses of microarray technologies has become essential in training the modern scientist. The following article offers preparatory and problem-solving questions for engaging students in the understanding of microarray technologies for use in conjunction with other course materials relating to discussions of microarray technology. Abstract

A short, efficient asymmetric synthesis of (+)-alpha-curcumene and (+)-xanthorrhizol was developed based on the highly stereoselective addition of organolithium reagents to alkenyl oxazolines. A major side product of the reaction was a polymer, arising from addition of the initially formed anion to the starting oxazoline. The starting chiral oxazoline was prepared from crotonic acid, which was converted to the mixed anhydride.

The studies performed with chiral oxazolines as vehicles for a number of carbon--carbon bond-forming reactions are traced back to the early 1970s, where the main source of chirality was derived from chiral, and nonracemic amino alcohols. The factors responsible for high optical yields during that era were attributed to rigidity or precomplexation of the reactants, thus providing a more well-defined topograhy during the reaction course.

Abstract

Issues pertaining to sexual orientation, while always deeply personal, are most profoundly constructed along traditional lines by cultural factors. The dilemma-gay or straight-appears most frequently in treatment in its interrogative form: 'Am I gay or am I straight?' The question is imbued with an urgency considered self-evident by the patient and the therapist. Why? Why do we really want to know? What can the answer mean for the patient? What does it mean to the therapist? What does the necessity of an answer illuminate about Western notions of sexuality? Inherent in this paper's thesis is the supposition that we are unable to clinically comprehend what we do not culturally comprehend. The cultural, like the psychological, is rarely manifest; it must be made visible before it can become comprehensible. Three approaches come to mind: the first method, most familiar to psychoanalysts, is the analysis and deconstruction of language; the second, most familiar to anthropologists, is the contrast and comparison with other cultures; the third, an integration between the cultural and the psychological, can be seen within the developing metapsychology of psychoanalytic theory. The way we use the question of sexual orientation with patients beautifully illustrates the importance of an integrative comprehension. A case vignette is used to illustrate these points. 39. Validating a systematic computer -administered visual analogue response latency in a clinical sample

Abstract

The present study investigated the clinical utility of a method for assessing patients on psychological traits, which maximizes the response choices for participants while maintaining the quantitativeness of an objective measure. The method used was a visual analogue scale administered via computer, wherein participants responded true or false to pre-selected locations on the continuum, which for this trial, measured illness-related functional impairment. As hypothesized, the summary scores of the visual analogue demonstrated concurrent validity with a gold standard measurement of the same trait. Each location on the continuum was surveyed ten times. As hypothesized, participants' response profiles typified a quadratic trend such that, at the extremes of response consistency, all true or all false, responses were fastest. As responses per location approached an even split between true and false responses, response latencies became longer. In keeping with the nature of trait assessment, as conceived in a visual analogue scale, all of the participants produced response patterns containing an identifiable string of locations with aggregate scores of true (Consistently true area; CTA). Most of the patterns contained a similar set of contiguous locations with aggregate scores of false (Consistently false area; CFA). However, contrary to expectations, only a minority had transitional areas (TA) with an inconsistent mix of true and false locations. Therefore, instead of the expected quartic trend in the response latency patterns, what was found was that at the border between CTAs and CFAs, there was a tendency toward a significant elevation in response latency. Finally, as hypothesized, participants responded in an increasingly rapid fashion over the course of testing, and their responses became increasingly polarized as either all true or all false in particular locations.
