Innovative materials enable two‐photon polymerization for precise additive fabrication of intricate optical components. Existing polymeric inks suffer from poor optical performance due to their high organic content. Silica‐rich sol‐gel ink (75 wt%, under ambient conditions) is presented for high‐precision three‐dimensional (3D) printing of microscale structures and optical devices. A photoinitiator with high‐efficiency nonlinear absorption is introduced to initiate two‐photon polymerization. Utilizing a commercial direct laser writing system, 3D‐printing is demonstrated including the optimization of printing parameters and ink characterization. The optical performance of the printed microscale elements using the new sol‐gel ink surpasses commercially available polymeric inks on key metrics: Printed elements exhibit extremely low surface roughness, 3nm; visible and near‐IR light transmission is greater than 90%; Printed elements present enhanced mechanical and chemical resistance to common organic solvents; Structures exhibit low isotropic shrinkage, <10%; Elements withstand continuous‐wave laser intensities exceeding 7 × 105 W cm−2. Direct writing onto an optical fiber tip with no need for surface functionalization is presented, with the demonstration of a tall waveguide taper (≈1:5 aspect ratio) with low losses and modal crosstalk, and a freestanding photonic lantern mode multiplexer. The growing interest in 3D printing of silica glass has spurred substantial research efforts. The prior work utilizing a liquid silica resin (LSR) demonstrated high printing accuracy and resolution. However, the resin's sensitivity to moisture posed limitations, restricting the printing environment. On the other hand, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)‐based materials offer excellent water stability and sinterless features. Yet, they suffer from relatively high shrinkage due to the presence of additional organic monomers. In this study, a polymeric silsesquioxane (PSQ) resin is presented with reduced shrinkage, enhanced moisture stability, and the retention of sinterless features, providing a promising solution for achieving high‐resolution 3D printing of glass objects. Leveraging the two‐photon polymerization (2PP) method, nanostructures are realized with feature sizes below 80 nm. Moreover, the tunability of the refractive index is demonstrated by incorporating zirconium moieties into the resin, facilitating the fabrication of glass micro‐optics with varying refractive indices. Importantly, the self‐welding capability observed between two individual components provides a flexible approach for producing micro‐optics with multiple components, each possessing distinct refractive indices. The integration of multiple functional microscopy methods into a single, miniaturized instrument, known as multimodal endomicroscopy, presents significant challenges due to the often conflicting optical requirements of each imaging modality. In this study, the use of 3D nano‐printing based on two‐photon polymerization for the monolithic manufacturing of complete optical MEMS devices is investigated as an enabling platform for multimodal endoscopy. This approach offers unparalleled miniaturization, design flexibility, and alignment precision of micro‐optics and actuators. In particular, the design, fabrication, and characterization of a monolithically 3D nano‐printed bistable microlens actuator are discussed. Bistability allows the microlens to switch between two stable positions, thereby changing the focus distance and numerical aperture. The actuator features two coils with opposing current directions, which create a magnetic field gradient around a polymer micro‐magnet. This configuration allows for robust switching between stable positions with an average axial distance of 168.3 ± 7.3 µm. Experiments conducted to ascertain the optical characterization of the actuator demonstrate its capacity to transition between different optical modes. The beam widths are measured to be in the range of 4.1 ± 0.2 µm in the high‐resolution mode and 11.3 ± 1.1 µm in the extended depth of focus mode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

3D nanolithography based on two‐photon polymerization (TPP) allows for the high‐precision fabrication of nearly arbitrary 3D micro/nanostructures, finding extensive applications in areas such as micro‐optics, micro‐mechanics, and biomedicine. However, the large size, complexity of optical systems, and high costs have significantly constrained the widespread adoption of 3D nanolithography technology in both scientific research and industry. In this study, a metasurface is introduced, for the first time, into 3D nanolithography resulting in the construction of a miniaturized and simplified TPP system that achieved efficient multi‐focus parallel processing with high uniformity. A microlens array is fabricated, showcasing the system's application capacity to generate an array of devices with high consistency and quality. It is believed that the utilization of metasurface devices will provide a novel TPP operating platform, enabling richer and more flexible printing functionalities while maintaining system miniaturization and low cost. Thermal radiation is intrinsically broadband, incoherent and non-directional. The ability to beam thermal energy preferentially in one direction is not only of fundamental importance, but it will enable high radiative efficiency critical for many thermal sensing, imaging, and energy devices. Over the years, different photonic materials and structures have been designed utilizing resonant and propagating modes to generate directional thermal emission. However, such thermal emission is narrowband and polarised, leading to limited thermal transfer efficiency. Here we experimentally demonstrate ultrabroadband polarisation-independent directional control of thermal radiation with a pixelated directional micro-emitter. Our compact pixelated directional micro-emitter facilitates tunable angular control of thermal radiation through non-imaging optical principles, producing a large emissivity contrast at different view angles. Using this platform, we further create a pixelated infrared display, where information is only observable at certain directions. Our pixelated non-imaging micro-optics approach can enable efficient radiative cooling, infrared spectroscopy, thermophotovoltaics, and thermal camouflaging. The authors demonstrate ultrabroadband, polarisation-independent directional control of thermal radiation using a pixelated micro-emitter, and produce large emissivity contrast at different directions, with potential applications to radiative cooling, infrared spectroscopy and thermophotovoltaics. A rapid and robust method to fabricate transmission diffractive optical elements in the visible wavelengths is presented. By additive manufacturing of a polymeric photo-resin using 2-photon lithography followed by encasing of the structure in another resin with similar refractive index, the height of the structure can be made much larger, thus trading-off fabrication height for refractive index difference of the two materials. After adjusting for resin shrinkage, different diffractive optical element designs including an m = 1 vortex plate, and Laguerre-Gaussian beams with azimuthal and radial indices of (1,1), (1,2), and (2,1) were demonstrated. Experimental results show intensity patterns matching that of simulations, including size and features, although some aberration was observed, possibly due to fabrication tolerance errors or beam misalignment. This technique adds to the toolkit of micro-optics fabrication methods using additive manufacturing and 3D printing, and it would be beneficial for rapid prototyping and integration with miniaturised systems.

Although optical microscopy is a widely used technique across various multidisciplinary fields for inspecting small-scale objects, surfaces or organisms, it faces a significant limitation: the lateral resolution of optical microscopes is fundamentally constrained by light diffraction. Dielectric micro-spheres, however, offer a promising solution to this issue as they are capable of significantly enhancing lateral resolution through extraordinary phenomena, such as a photonic nanojet.Building upon the potential of dielectric micro-spheres, this paper introduces a novel approach for fabricating 3D micro-devices designed to enhance lateral resolution in optical microscopy. The proposed 3D micro-device comprises a modified coverslip and a micro-sphere, facilitating easy handling and integration into any existing optical microscope. To manufacture the device, two advanced femtosecond laser techniques are employed: femtosecond laser ablation and multi-photon lithography. Femtosecond laser ablation was employed to create a micro-hole in the coverslip, which allows light to be focused through this aperture. Multi-photon lithography was used to fabricate a micro-sphere with a diameter of 20 µm, along with a cantilever that positions the above the processed micro-hole and connect it with the coverslip. In this context, advanced processing strategies for multi-photon lithography to produce a micro-sphere with superior surface roughness and almost perfect geometry (λ/8) from a Zr-based hybrid photoresist are demonstrated. The performance of the micro-device was evaluated using Mirau-type coherence scanning interferometry in conjunction with white light illumination at a central wavelength of 600 nm and a calibration grid (Λ = 0.28 µm, h > 50 nm). Here, the 3D micro-device proved to be capable of enhancing lateral resolution beyond the limits achievable with conventional lenses or microscope objectives when used in air. Simultaneously, it maintained the high axial resolution characteristic of Mirau-type coherence scanning interferometry. The results and optical properties of the micro-sphere were analyzed and further discussed through simulations.

The demand for fast optical image acquisition without movable optical elements (e.g., for self-driving car technology) can be met using bioinspired 3D compound eyes. 3D laser processing strategies enable designable 3D structuring but suffer from low fabrication efficiency, which significantly limits their applications in producing complex 3D optical devices. Herein, we demonstrate a versatile yet simple wet-etching-assisted holographic laser fabrication method for the development of 3D compound eyes. Artificial compound μ-eyes can be readily fabricated by programming a 3D spot array for the parallel ablation of a curved fused silica surface, followed by controllable etching in a hydrofluoric (HF) acid solution. A 3D-concave-lens array made on a curved surface over an area of 100 μm cross-section with each lenslet of 10 μm radius was fabricated with high fidelity and excellent imaging/focusing quality. The resultant 3D-concave-lens can serve as a hard template for the mass production of soft compound eyes through soft lithography. Additionally, using a generative adversarial network (GAN)-based deep learning algorithm, image restoration was conducted for each lenslet, which retained a large field of view and significantly improved image quality. This method provides a simple solution to the requirements of compound μ-eyes required by Industry 4.0.

In this paper, diffraction of scalar waves by a screen with a circular aperture is explored, considering the incidence of either a collimated beam or a focused wave, a historical review of the development of the theory is presented, and the introduction of the Fresnel approximation is described. For diffraction by a focused wave, the general case is considered for both high numerical aperture and for finite values of the Fresnel number. One aim is to develop a theory based on the use of dimensionless optical coordinates that can help to determined the general behaviour and trends of different system parameters. An important phenomenon, the focal shift effect, is discussed as well. Explicit expressions are provided for focal shift and the peak intensity for different numerical apertures and Fresnel numbers. Emerging applications of optical technologies are driving the development of miniaturised light sources, which in turn require the fabrication of matching micro-optical elements with sub-1 mm cross-sections and high optical quality. This is particularly challenging for spatially constrained biomedical applications where reduced dimensionality is required, such as endoscopy, optogenetics, or optical implants. Planarisation of a lens by the Fresnel lens approach was adapted for a conical lens (axicon) and was made by direct femtosecond 780 nm/100 fs laser writing in the SZ2080™ polymer with a photo-initiator. Optical characterisation of the positive and negative fraxicons is presented. Numerical modelling of fraxicon optical performance under illumination by incoherent and spatially extended light sources is compared with the ideal case of plane-wave illumination. Micro- and nanofibers are the universal elements of the optical schemes for solving wide variety of experimental tasks. One usually uses the commercial optical fiber tapering in the burner's flame to produce such nanofibers. Such tapers are actively used for production of highly sensitive sensors, experiments with the cold atoms and coupling to optical microresonators. The theoretical model of geometrical shape altering during the fiber tapering and heating was adapted in this publication for use in the algorithm with universal adjustment of the tapering modes to get a fiber with the desired set of parameters. One of the innovations was the implementation of the computer vision to control the tapering process. As a result, the nanofibers with the optimal waist diameter of about 700 nm for the radiation wavelength of 1.55 μm were obtained. The optimized methodic of tapering allows the production of the nanofibers with the transmittance of up to 80%. The produced nanofibers were successfully used for coupling to the crystalline whispering gallery mode microresonator. In this work, a 3D printed biocompatible micro-optofluidic (MoF) device for two-phase flow monitoring is presented. Both an air–water bi-phase flow and a two-phase mixture composed of micrometric cells suspended on a liquid solution were successfully controlled and monitored through its use. To manufacture the MoF device, a highly innovative microprecision 3D printing technique was used named Projection Microstereolithography (P μ SL) in combination with the use of a novel 3D printable photocurable resin suitable for biological and biomedical applications. The concentration monitoring of biological fluids relies on the absorption phenomenon. More precisely, the nature of the transmission of the light strictly depends on the cell concentration: the higher the cell concentration, the lower the optical acquired signal. To achieve this, the microfluidic T-junction device was designed with two micrometric slots for the optical fibers' insertion, needed to acquire the light signal. In fact, both the micro-optical and the microfluidic components were integrated within the developed device. To assess the suitability of the selected biocompatible transparent resin for optical detection relying on the selected working principle (absorption phenomenon), a comparison between a two-phase flow process detected inside a previously fully characterized micro-optofluidic device made of a nonbiocompatible high-performance resin (HTL resin) and the same made of the biocompatible one (BIO resin) was carried out. In this way, it was possible to highlight the main differences between the two different resin grades, which were further justified with proper chemical analysis of the used resins and their hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature via static water contact angle measurements. A wide experimental campaign was performed for the biocompatible device manufactured through the P μ SL technique in different operative conditions, i.e., different concentrations of eukaryotic yeast cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (with a diameter of 5 μ m) suspended on a PBS (phosphate-buffered saline) solution. The performed analyses revealed that the selected photocurable transparent biocompatible resin for the manufactured device can be used for cell concentration monitoring by using ad hoc 3D printed micro-optofluidic devices. In fact, by means of an optical detection system and using the optimized operating conditions, i.e., the optimal values of the flow rate F R = 0.1 mL/min and laser input power P ∈ { 1 , 3 } mW, we were able to discriminate between biological fluids with different concentrations of suspended cells with a robust working ability R 2 = 0.9874 and R a d j 2 = 0.9811 . This work proposes a multi-objective polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micro-optofluidic (MoF) device suitably designed and manufactured through a 3D-printed-based master–slave approach. It exploits optical detection techniques to characterize immiscible fluids or microparticles in suspension inside a compartment specifically designed at the core of the device referred to as the MoF chamber. In addition, we show our novel, fast, and cost-effective methodology, dual-slit particle signal velocimetry (DPSV), for fluids and microparticle velocity detection. Different from the standard state-of-the-art approaches, the methodology focuses on signal processing rather than image processing. This alternative has several advantages, including the ability to circumvent the requirement of complex and extensive setups and cost reduction. Additionally, its rapid processing speed allows for real-time sample manipulations in ongoing image-based analyses. For our specific design, optical signals have been detected from the micro-optics components placed in two slots designed ad hoc in the device. To show the devices' multipurpose capabilities, the device has been tested with fluids of various colors and densities and the inclusion of synthetic microparticles. Additionally, several experiments have been conducted to prove the effectiveness of the DPSV approach in estimating microparticle velocities. A digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV)-based approach has been used as a baseline against which the outcomes of our methods have been evaluated. The combination of the suitability of the micro-optical components for integration, along with the MoF chamber device and the DPSV approach, demonstrates a proof of concept towards the challenge of real-time total-on-chip analysis. Several strategies exist capable of fabricating microlenses for applications such as cameras and solar cells. Among them, techniques based on printing curable liquid prepolymers including inkjet and electrohydrodynamic‐jet printing, or laser‐induced forward‐transfer (LIFT) offer unique advantages in terms of ease of integration, cost, and compatibility with flexible substrates. However, the optical properties of the so‐fabricated microlenses depend on the wettability of the liquid prepolymer, preventing the broad implementation of printing technologies for micro‐optics. Herein, how printing microdroplets on top of reconfigurable substrates allows overcoming this issue is reported. The strategy, called print‐n‐release, is based on depositing prepolymer microdroplets on top of mechanically stretched elastomeric substrates. Once the stress applied to the substrate is released, and provided pinning of the contact line, the microdroplet's base diameter decreases producing an increase in contact angle and reduction in radius of curvature. Following a curing step, the microdroplets are converted into microlenses whose shape no longer depends exclusively on their wetting properties, but also on the substrate elongation. It is demonstrated that, by combining LIFT with substrates elongated up to 80%, microlenses can be fabricated with a 400% increase in contact angle and a 90% reduction in focal length, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. This perspective is an overview of a recent direction in optical 3D printing, where polymerization of crosslinkable materials and nanomaterial fillers can be guided to the final structures and new composites via high temperature annealing (HTA). Defining 3D nano/micro‐structures by ultrafast laser direct writing and tailoring their precursor composition with subsequent tunability of the final properties during 750–1500 °C HTA step takes place at the large surface‐to‐volume ratio conditions favoring efficient pyrolysis and calcination, which are required for exchange of chemical materials/gases between glass/ceramic phase and surrounding. Previously, unexplored inorganic material formation conditions in terms of fast thermal quenching, composition mixing and surface tension guided formation can be harnessed by glass making for creation of new materials endowed with preferable technical properties. The importance of 3D direct laser writing as an enabling technology increased rapidly in recent years. Complex micro‐optics and optical devices with various functionalities are now feasible. Different possibilities to increase the optical performance are demonstrated, for example, multi‐lens objectives, a combination of different photoresists, or diffractive optical elements. It is still challenging to create fitting apertures for these micro optics. In this work, a novel and simple way to create 3D‐printed opaque structures with a highly absorptive photoresist is introduced, which can be used to fabricate microscopic apertures increasing the contrast of 3D‐printed micro optics and enabling new optical designs. Both hybrid printing by combining clear and opaque resists, as well as printing transparent optical elements and their surrounding opaque apertures solely from a single black resist by using different printing thicknesses are demonstrated. The increasing demand for optics quality requires the lowest optical power loss, which can occur from unwanted reflections. Laser direct writing (LDW) allows for the fabrication of complex structures, which is particularly advantageous in micro-optic applications. This research demonstrates the possibility of forming an anti-reflective coating on hybrid polymer micro-lenses fabricated by employing LDW without changing their geometry. Such coating deposited via atomic layer deposition (ALD) decreased the reflection from 3.3% to 0.1% at a wavelength of 633 nm for one surface of hybrid organic–inorganic SZ2080™ material. This research validates the compatibility of ALD with LDW 3D multiphoton lithography synergistically, expanding its applications on optical grade sub-100 μm scale micro-optics. Laser exposure defines voxel's dimensions as essential building blocks in direct write 3D nanolithography. However, the exposure conditions not only influence the size of the produced features but also their optical properties. This empowers the realization of an adjustable refractive index out of single material by varying the writing strategy while preserving laser 3D nanolithography's flexibility in geometry and high resolution. Here, the refractive index for the 450–1600 nm spectral range of the micro‐optics out of SZ2080 hybrid polymer is systematically studied by applying ray and wave optics approaches followed by optical resolution analysis. It reveals the exact value of the laser‐printed components instead of the determination assessed by other techniques measuring thin films or bulky volumes of the investigated substance. The studied micro‐lenses are of below 100 µm in dimensions and a clear distinction in their performance on low and high exposure doses is found by analyzing it in all different approaches and validating using different lithography setups. Findings reveal the complexity of the refractive index of the 3D micro‐optics which is influenced by the material density and morphology. A route for freedom in 3D printing shape and refractive index can be realized by the technological optimization of delicate exposure control in ultrafast laser nanolithography. In this work, a quadratic polynomial regression model was developed to aid practitioners in the determination of the refractive index value of transparent 3D printable photocurable resins usable for micro-optofluidic applications. The model was experimentally determined by correlating empirical optical transmission measurements (the dependent variable) to known refractive index values (the independent variable) of photocurable materials used in optics, thus obtaining a related regression equation. In detail, a novel, simple, and cost-effective experimental setup is proposed in this study for the first time for collecting the transmission measurements of smooth 3D printed samples (roughness ranging between 0.04 and 2 μm). The model was further used to determine the unknown refractive index value of novel photocurable resins applicable in vat photopolymerization (VP) 3D printing techniques for manufacturing micro-optofluidic (MoF) devices. In the end, this study proved how knowledge of this parameter allowed us to compare and interpret collected empirical optical data from microfluidic devices made of more traditional materials, i.e., Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), up to novel 3D printable photocurable resins suitable for biological and biomedical applications. Thus, the developed model also provides a quick method to evaluate the suitability of novel 3D printable resins for MoF device fabrication within a well-defined range of refractive index values (1.56; 1.70). In this study, a single-step nanosecond laser-induced generation of micro-optical features is demonstrated on an antibacterial bioresorbable Cu-doped calcium phosphate glass. The inverse Marangoni flow of the laser-generated melt is exploited for the fabrication of microlens arrays and diffraction gratings. The process is realized in a matter of few seconds and, by optimizing the laser parameters, micro-optical features with a smooth surface are obtained showing a good optical quality. The tunability of the microlens' dimensions is achieved by varying the laser power, allowing the obtaining of multi-focal microlenses that are of great interest for three-dimensional (3D) imaging. Furthermore, the microlens' shape can be tuned between hyperboloid and spherical. The fabricated microlenses exhibited good focusing and imaging performance and the variable focal lengths were measured experimentally, showing good agreement with the calculated values. The diffraction gratings obtained by this method showed the typical periodic pattern with a first-order efficiency of about 5.1%. Finally, the dissolution characteristics of the fabricated micropatterns were studied in a phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS, pH = 7.4) demonstrating the bioresorbability of the micro-optical components. This study offers a new approach for the fabrication of micro-optics on bioresorbable glass, which could enable the manufacturing of new implantable optical sensing components for biomedical applications. Efficient fiber‐to‐chip coupling has been a major hurdle to cost‐effective packaging and scalable interconnections of photonic integrated circuits. Conventional photonic packaging methods relying on edge or grating coupling are constrained by high insertion losses, limited bandwidth density, narrow band operation, and sensitivity to misalignment. This work presents a new fiber‐to‐chip coupling scheme based on free‐form reflective micro‐optics. A design approach which simplifies the high‐dimensional free‐form optimization problem to as few as two full‐wave simulations is implemented to empower computationally efficient design of high‐performance free‐form reflectors while capitalizing on the expanded geometric degrees of freedom. This work demonstrates fiber array coupling to waveguides taped out through a standard foundry shuttle run and backend integrated with 3‐D printed micro‐optics. A low coupling loss down to 0.5 dB is experimentally measured at 1550 nm wavelength with a record 1‐dB bandwidth of 300 nm spanning O to U bands. The coupling scheme further affords large alignment tolerance, high bandwidth density, and solder reflow compatibility, qualifying it as a promising optical packaging solution for applications such as wavelength division multiplexing communications, broadband spectroscopic sensing, and nonlinear optical signal processing. Three-dimensional multiphoton laser lithography of hybrid resins has been shown to be a viable tool for producing micro-optical functional components. The use of calcination heat treatment also allows the transformation of such structures from the initial polymer to final glass and glass-ceramic. Although the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) is an important parameter in characterizing all optics, it was not known for such sol–gel-derived glass microstructures. Here we present the first pilot study regarding this parameter, wherein functional microlenses have been made, damaged and calcinated for the series-on-one protocol. Laser Direct Writing (LDW), also known as 3D multi-photon laser lithography of resins, is a promising technique for fabricating complex free-form elements, including micro-optical functional components. Regular organic or hybrid (organic–inorganic) resins are often used, with the latter exhibiting better optical characteristics, as well as having the option to be heat-treated into inorganic glass-like structures particularly useful for resilient micro-optics. This work is a continuation of our SZ2080™ calcination development of micro-optics, specifically studying the Laser-Induced Damage Threshold (LIDT). Such sol–gel-derived glass 3D micro-structures, particularly those that undergo heat treatment, have not been well-characterized in this respect. In this pilot study, we investigated the LIDT using the Series-on-One (S-on-1) protocol of functional micro-lenses produced via LDW and subsequently calcinated. Our results demonstrate that the LIDT can be significantly increased, even multiple times, by this approach, thus enhancing the resilience and usefulness of these free-form micro-optics. This work represents the first investigation in terms of LIDT into the impact of calcination on LDW-produced, sol–gel-derived glass micro-structures and provides important insights for the development of robust micro-optical devices. We propose a new method for fabricating arrays of colloidal quantum dots for color conversion layers (CCLs) with atomic layer deposited (ALD) encapsulation. Semiconductor processes were used to transfer the CCL onto a transparent glass substrate. This method enables pixels as small as 5 μm, and the pixel's size and pitch can be controlled through the semiconductor process and mask layout. A dual-color array with a red-and-green CCL was also demonstrated to be suitable for microdisplay applications in experiments. The best color conversion efficiency of a single color CCL reached as high as 20.7%. A set of distributed Bragg reflector mirrors was used to increase photon recycling, and these mirrors yielded an increase in peak intensity of 35.7%. We formulated a model of incoherent reflection and transmission to calculate the changes in CCL properties when mirrors are added; this model had close fit with results from experiments in which mirrors of different reflection coefficients were used. Through the use of ALD, the CCL can be stored at a normal room-temperature environment for more than 9000 hours, and the projected lifetime is linearly extrapolated to be 44,041 hours.

Emerging applications of optical technologies are driving the development of miniaturised light sources, which in turn require the fabrication of matching micro-optical elements with sub-1 mm cross-sections and high optical quality. This is particularly challenging for spatially constrained biomedical applications where reduced dimensionality is required, such as endoscopy, optogenetics, or optical implants. Planarisation of a lens by the Fresnel lens approach was adapted for a conical lens (axicon) and was made by direct femtosecond 780 nm/100 fs laser writing in the SZ2080™ polymer with a photo-initiator. Optical characterisation of the positive and negative fraxicons is presented. Numerical modelling of fraxicon optical performance under illumination by incoherent and spatially extended light sources is compared with the ideal case of plane-wave illumination. Considering the potential for rapid replication in soft polymers and resists, this approach holds great promise for the most demanding technological applications.

This work proposes a multi-objective polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micro-optofluidic (MoF) device suitably designed and manufactured through a 3D-printed-based master–slave approach. It exploits optical detection techniques to characterize immiscible fluids or microparticles in suspension inside a compartment specifically designed at the core of the device referred to as the MoF chamber. In addition, we show our novel, fast, and cost-effective methodology, dual-slit particle signal velocimetry (DPSV), for fluids and microparticle velocity detection. Different from the standard state-of-the-art approaches, the methodology focuses on signal processing rather than image processing. This alternative has several advantages, including the ability to circumvent the requirement of complex and extensive setups and cost reduction. Additionally, its rapid processing speed allows for real-time sample manipulations in ongoing image-based analyses. For our specific design, optical signals have been detected from the micro-optics components placed in two slots designed ad hoc in the device. To show the devices’ multipurpose capabilities, the device has been tested with fluids of various colors and densities and the inclusion of synthetic microparticles. Additionally, several experiments have been conducted to prove the effectiveness of the DPSV approach in estimating microparticle velocities. A digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV)-based approach has been used as a baseline against which the outcomes of our methods have been evaluated. The combination of the suitability of the micro-optical components for integration, along with the MoF chamber device and the DPSV approach, demonstrates a proof of concept towards the challenge of real-time total-on-chip analysis.

In this work, a 3D printed biocompatible micro-optofluidic (MoF) device for two-phase flow monitoring is presented. Both an air–water bi-phase flow and a two-phase mixture composed of micrometric cells suspended on a liquid solution were successfully controlled and monitored through its use. To manufacture the MoF device, a highly innovative microprecision 3D printing technique was used named Projection Microstereolithography (PμSL) in combination with the use of a novel 3D printable photocurable resin suitable for biological and biomedical applications. The concentration monitoring of biological fluids relies on the absorption phenomenon. More precisely, the nature of the transmission of the light strictly depends on the cell concentration: the higher the cell concentration, the lower the optical acquired signal. To achieve this, the microfluidic T-junction device was designed with two micrometric slots for the optical fibers’ insertion, needed to acquire the light signal. In fact, both the micro-optical and the microfluidic components were integrated within the developed device. To assess the suitability of the selected biocompatible transparent resin for optical detection relying on the selected working principle (absorption phenomenon), a comparison between a two-phase flow process detected inside a previously fully characterized micro-optofluidic device made of a nonbiocompatible high-performance resin (HTL resin) and the same made of the biocompatible one (BIO resin) was carried out. In this way, it was possible to highlight the main differences between the two different resin grades, which were further justified with proper chemical analysis of the used resins and their hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature via static water contact angle measurements. A wide experimental campaign was performed for the biocompatible device manufactured through the PμSL technique in different operative conditions, i.e., different concentrations of eukaryotic yeast cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (with a diameter of 5 μm) suspended on a PBS (phosphate-buffered saline) solution. The performed analyses revealed that the selected photocurable transparent biocompatible resin for the manufactured device can be used for cell concentration monitoring by using ad hoc 3D printed micro-optofluidic devices. In fact, by means of an optical detection system and using the optimized operating conditions, i.e., the optimal values of the flow rate FR=0.1 mL/min and laser input power P∈{1,3} mW, we were able to discriminate between biological fluids with different concentrations of suspended cells with a robust working ability R2=0.9874 and Radj2=0.9811.

The field of 3D micro‐optics is rapidly expanding, and essential advances in femtosecond laser direct‐write 3D multi‐photon lithography (MPL, also known as two‐photon or multi‐photon polymerization) are being made. Micro‐optics realized via MPL emerged a decade ago and the field has exploded during the last five years. Impressive findings have revealed its potential for beam shaping, advanced imaging, optical sensing, integrated photonic circuits, and much more. This is supported by a game‐changing and increasing industrial interest from key established companies in this field. In this review, the origin and the advancement of micro‐optics fabrication with MPL are detailed by describing the chronology, distinguishing discrete application groups, providing generalized technical data on the processes and available materials, and discussing the foreseen near‐future advances. Siliceous diatom frustules present a huge variety of shapes and nanometric pore patterns. A better understanding of the light modulation by these frustules is required to determine whether or not they might have photobiological roles besides their possible utilization as building blocks in photonic applications. In this study, we propose a novel approach for analyzing the near-field light modulation by small pennate diatom frustules, utilizing the frustule of Gomphonema parvulum as a model. Numerical analysis was carried out for the wave propagation across selected 2D cross-sections in a statistically representative 3D model for the valve based on the finite element frequency domain method. The influences of light wavelength (vacuum wavelengths from 300 to 800 nm) and refractive index changes, as well as structural parameters, on the light modulation were investigated and compared to theoretical predictions when possible. The results showed complex interference patterns resulting from the overlay of different optical phenomena, which can be explained by the presence of a few integrated optical components in the valve. Moreover, studies on the complete frustule in an aqueous medium allow the discussion of its possible photobiological relevance. Flocculation is a complex process, usually dependant on various conditions to perform adequately. Nevertheless, the relevance and interaction of the process variables are not easily found in literature. In this study, nine variables of ultrafine quartz flocculation systems, defined in Part 1 of this study, were analysed. The effects of each variable and their interactions in the system were investigated based on flocculation and sedimentation tests. The results were statistically evaluated using the supernatant turbidity as experimental response. The evaluations resulting from the statistical approach indicated that suspension pH (5.49%) was the most significant variable, followed by flocculant concentration (4.07%) with the second greatest effect on the turbidity of the supernatant. Solid concentration, agitation intensity, and surfactant conditioning time (4.05%, 3.51% and 3.51%, respectively), also have significant effects on ultrafine quartz flocculation. The flocculant concentration and the surfactant conditioning time were the variables with the most significant interactions with the main variables. The Camp Number values showed a negative exponential relationship with the turbidity results, proving to be an important tool to evaluate flocculation. Backscattered electron scanning microscopy images of flocs formed in the presence of 30 g/t PAM showed compact flocs in the size range between 150 and 365 µm, with noticeable sphericity. The increasing demand for optics quality requires the lowest optical power loss, which can occur from unwanted reflections. Laser direct writing (LDW) allows for the fabrication of complex structures, which is particularly advantageous in micro-optic applications. This research demonstrates the possibility of forming an anti-reflective coating on hybrid polymer micro-lenses fabricated by employing LDW without changing their geometry. Such coating deposited via atomic layer deposition (ALD) decreased the reflection from 3.3% to 0.1% at a wavelength of 633 nm for one surface of hybrid organic–inorganic SZ2080™ material. This research validates the compatibility of ALD with LDW 3D multiphoton lithography synergistically, expanding its applications on optical grade sub-100 μm scale micro-optics.

MEMS based piezoelectrically driven micro-lens actuator experiences resonance frequency shift with changing actuation voltage and exhibits low level of damping. In this paper, we present the design and experimental implementation of a resonant controller, robust against the variation in dynamics, to enhance the damping at the first resonance frequency. The controller is designed using an identified model of the micro-lens actuator from experimental frequency response data at a fixed actuating voltage. The closed-loop stability is guaranteed using the mixed negative-imaginary and small-gain approach. The experimental results demonstrate a damping of 21dB of the first resonance mode. The designed controller achieved the similar level of damping for the shift in resonance frequency due to the change in the actuation voltage. The settling time, due to a step change, of the piezoelectric micro-lens actuator is reduced to 7ms from 120ms. Such quick settling time is necessary for the fast auto-focusing functionality of the piezoelectrically driven micro-lens actuator in a miniaturized camera module. [2022-0137] [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inspired by insect compound eyes (CEs) that feature unique optical schemes for imaging, there has recently been growing interest in developing optoelectronic CE cameras with comparable size and functions. However, considering the mismatch between the complex 3D configuration of CEs and the planar nature of available imaging sensors, it is currently challenging to reach this end. Here, we report a paradigm in miniature optoelectronic integrated CE camera by manufacturing polymer CEs with 19~160 logarithmic profile ommatidia via femtosecond laser two-photon polymerization. In contrast to μ-CEs with spherical ommatidia that suffer from defocusing problems, the as-obtained μ-CEs with logarithmic ommatidia permit direct integration with a commercial CMOS detector, because the depth-of-field and focus range of all the logarithmic ommatidia are significantly increased. The optoelectronic integrated μ-CE camera enables large field-of-view imaging (90°), spatial position identification and sensitive trajectory monitoring of moving targets. Moreover, the miniature μ-CE camera can be integrated with a microfluidic chip and serves as an on-chip camera for real-time microorganisms monitoring. The insect-scale optoelectronic μ-CE camera provides a practical route for integrating well-developed planar imaging sensors with complex micro-optics elements, holding great promise for cutting-edge applications in endoscopy and robot vision. The defocusing problem has been considered the main bottleneck for developing optoelectronic μ-compound eye (CE) cameras. The circular Fresnel zone plate (FZP) has been extensively used in micro-optics due to its outstanding focusing performance. Despite that, the curved edge of the circular zone has drawbacks limiting its use in terahertz imaging, array generator, and micro/nano-manufacturing. Therefore, a circular structure is not very practical to use. In this paper, Quadrate FZPs were proposed, and diffraction properties of the linear FZP (L-FZP), orthogonal FZP (O-FZP), and square FZP (S-FZP) were studied. Theoretically, the relationship between half side length of S-FZP and the radius of circular FZP is established, and the focal length formula of the S-FZP is derived. The linear and crossline focusing properties of quadrate FZPs were studied experimentally along with simulations. With the addition of blockers and phase shifting, the square and rectangular diffraction patterns were successfully obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, a quadratic polynomial regression model was developed to aid practitioners in the determination of the refractive index value of transparent 3D printable photocurable resins usable for micro-optofluidic applications. The model was experimentally determined by correlating empirical optical transmission measurements (the dependent variable) to known refractive index values (the independent variable) of photocurable materials used in optics, thus obtaining a related regression equation. In detail, a novel, simple, and cost-effective experimental setup is proposed in this study for the first time for collecting the transmission measurements of smooth 3D printed samples (roughness ranging between 0.04 and 2 μm). The model was further used to determine the unknown refractive index value of novel photocurable resins applicable in vat photopolymerization (VP) 3D printing techniques for manufacturing micro-optofluidic (MoF) devices. In the end, this study proved how knowledge of this parameter allowed us to compare and interpret collected empirical optical data from microfluidic devices made of more traditional materials, i.e., Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), up to novel 3D printable photocurable resins suitable for biological and biomedical applications. Thus, the developed model also provides a quick method to evaluate the suitability of novel 3D printable resins for MoF device fabrication within a well-defined range of refractive index values (1.56; 1.70).

Microlens arrays (MLAs) have a variety of applications in, e.g., display systems, projection optics, and sensors. They can be manufactured by various fabrication methods. Among all, inkjet printing stands out because it offers a straightforward, versatile, and low‐cost fabrication route. However, extra manufacturing steps such as photolithography are so far involved to pre‐structure the substrate in order to improve the uniformity of the printed MLAs and achieve a high fill factor (FF). In this study, the fabrication of MLAs is reported on unstructured substrates by inkjet printing using an optimized UV‐curable ink on top of self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs). The latter allows for tuning the surface free energy and thus the aspect ratio of the microlenses. The high uniformity of the printed MLAs is demonstrated by the automatic quantitative evaluations, where the standard deviations of the radii are below 2.5% and of the sag heights are less than 3.9%. An unprecedented FF of 88% amongst all inkjet‐printed MLAs on unstructured substrates is achieved. Digitally controlled large area fabrication is demonstrated, both, on rigid as well as on flexible substrates, opening a pathway for customized microoptics by additive manufacturing. Optical crystals are ideal materials for complex functional and durable optical components, but their good stability and hardness bring about difficulties in high‐precision machining and require surface roughness below λ/10. Femtosecond laser ablation is a widely applicable processing method indifferent to material types, but its 3D fabrication capability is limited by the accumulation of ablated debris and rough ablated surface. This work demonstrates a universal and flexible technology for the fabrication of crystalline micro‐optics with required shape and surface roughness for the most demanding optical phase control. The cavitation‐assisted ablation by a direct laser writing mode is followed by a high‐temperature treatment to remove the rough non‐crystalline layer caused by ablation. The annealing at temperatures below the melting point of the crystal reduces the roughness down to ≈2 nm without changing the structure shape. This virtue of maintaining the designed shape without change, which is impossible during thermal morphing of 3D surfaces of glasses, allows for a previously unavailable flexibility of surface finish for the most demanding optical micro‐optical elements made in this study. This universal technology with nanoscale resolution and free‐form 3D manufacturing capability is applicable for various crystals and provides a new way to fabricate micro‐/integrated‐optics and nonlinear optical elements. It is demonstrated that the proposed material and printing process can print almost all types of optical surfaces, including flat, spherical, aspherical, freeform, and discontinuous surfaces, with accurate surface shape and high surface quality for imaging applications. It is also demonstrated that the proposed method can print complex optical systems with multiple optical elements, completely removing the time‐consuming and error‐prone alignment process. Most importantly, the proposed printing method is able to print optical systems with active moving elements, significantly improving system flexibility and functionality. It was also about the philosophical idea of using an optical device for popular amusement.

This paper introduces micro‐optics fabrication on technical display glass. It improves display efficiency and enables innovative optical designs. Key value proposition is micro‐optics alignment with the display pixels. Technical data will be presented demonstrating the performance advantage of precision micro‐optics on technical glass compared to plastic substrate, and scalability to large‐size manufacturing. Photothermal microscopy has intrinsically super resolution capability due to the bilinear dependence of signal intensity of pump and probe. In the present paper, we have made further resolution improvement of high-sensitivity laser scanning photothermal microscopy by applying non-linear detection. By this, the new method has the following advantages: (1) super resolution with 61% and 42% enhancement from the diffraction limit values of the probe and pump wavelengths, respectively, by a second-order non-linear scheme, (2) compact light source using inexpensive conventional diode lasers, (3) wide applicability to nonfluorescent materials such as gold nanoparticles (GNPs) and hematoxylin-eosin stained biological samples, (4) relative robustness to optical damage, and (5) a high-frame rate using a Galvano mirror. The maximum resolution is determined to be 160 nm in the second-order non-linear detection mode and 270 nm in the linear detection mode by the PT signal of GNPs. The pixel rate and frame rate for 300x300 pixel image are 50 µs and 4.5 s, respectively. The pixel and frame rate are shorter than the rates, which are 1 ms and 100 s, respectively, using the piezo-driven stage system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fresnel micro-lens arrays with close-to-wavelength features have significant advantages in minimization of optical systems. However, in the fabrication of a Fresnel micro-lens array by conventional diamond turning, the discontinuous features of the surface profile cause interference between the tool flank face and the finished surface. In this manuscript, a novel off-spindle-axis diamond turning method is proposed to fabricate Fresnel micro-lens array mold insert and a toolpath generation algorithm is developed. The generation of each lenslet is treated as an independent turning operation, and the whole fabrication of a Fresnel micro-lens array is completed by a succession of repetitive turning operations. With this approach, the interference between the tool and the finished surface is avoided, and the form accuracy and surface integrity are improved for each lenslet. Then, the Fresnel micro-lens array mold insert is further utilized in precision glass molding to replicate the micro-lens structures onto transparent polymer substrates. The experimental results indicate that both the diamond-turned and molded Fresnel micro-lens arrays are achieved with homogeneous quality. As an application, a compact imaging system based on the molded Fresnel micro-lens array is demonstrated. The proposed machining method in this study can be employed in the fabrication of Fresnel micro-lens arrays and other micro-optics with discontinuous profiles with high accuracy and machining efficiency. • Off-spindle-axis diamond turning is used for Fresnel micro-lens array fabrication. • Toolpath is generated by synchronizing three linear motions and a rotatory motion. • The proposed machining strategy avoids the interference between tool and workpiece. • The method enables machining Fresnel micro-lens array molds with high form accuracy. • The molded polymer Fresnel micro-lens array has homogeneous imaging quality.
