This article examines what it meant to be Lutheran in the early modern Middle East. Its point of departure is a letter in which Stephan Gerlach, a sixteenth-century Lutheran chaplain to the imperial ambassador in Istanbul, asked his superiors about the type of behaviour that befitted him as a Lutheran. Was he allowed to wear a Turkish turban to see mosques and learn about Islam? Was it permissible for him in exceptional circumstances to accept communion under both kinds from a Roman Catholic monk? Was he allowed to postpone the Sunday sermon to attend Greek Orthodox ceremonies? Reconstructing how sixteenth-century Lutherans who had business in the early modern Middle East tried to resolve such issues not only affords new insights into the Lutheran experience in the Ottoman Empire; it also raises a set of fundamental questions about late sixteenth-century Lutheranism itself. Did Lutherans in this period develop forms of religious accommodation similar to those of early modern Catholics? Did travel in the Eastern Mediterranean demand a more flexible and more fluid form of Lutheranism? Could one even adhere to Lutheranism's core principles so far away from the place where the movement had first taken root? Through an examination of various Lutheran treatises and travelogues, I show that sixteenth-century Lutheranism did not develop an official policy of accommodation. Instead, Lutheran responses to questions about accommodation, (dis)simulation and conformity were often makeshift and idiosyncratic, because Lutheranism formulated little to no official guidance on the movement as a lived religion. This study investigates the link between futurism and the environment from a historical perspective by studying how the future of 'nature' is imagined in two Egyptian speculative texts written during the 20th century, specifically, an essay entitled 'Baʿd miʾat sana' ('One Hundred Years After') written by the Lebanese writer and intellectual Jurjy Zaydan in 1900 and the novel as-Sayyid min Haql al-Sabanikh (The Gentleman from the Spinach Field), published by the writer and journalist Sabri Musa in 1987. Although written more than 80 years apart, both texts speculate what Egypt will be like in the future, and both anticipate a 'return to nature' (al-rujūʿ ila al-tabiʿa). Borrowing insights from Middle Eastern environmental history and utopian-dystopian literary studies, the study places the texts within a larger speculative literary trend in the Arab region and elsewhere that interlaces with changing notions of environmental futures. Besides, it interprets the futuristic imagination of the two authors in light of the environmental and urban transformations occurring in Egypt during the 20th century. The comparative analysis of the two texts shows that while Zaydan anticipated a utopian future world where humans could rule and exploit 'nature' to progress towards a better future, thus reproducing in large part a colonial environmental imaginary, Musa's dystopian vision is based on a conception of the human than does more harm than good to 'nature', and on the belief that 'nature' could eventually revolt against human control. Using seismic data from 1,186 stations deployed across the westernmost Mediterranean, we construct a high‐resolution 3‐D radially anisotropic model from a joint inversion of receiver functions and Rayleigh and Love wave dispersions. The Rayleigh and Love data are extracted from both ambient noise interferograms and earthquake waveforms, and a new three‐station ambient noise interferometry method is used to further improve the data coverage. The obtained crustal thickness map reproduces independently the Moho depth maps compiled from previous data, showing crustal roots beneath the Pyrenean‐Cantabrian range and the Gibraltar Arc and thicker crust beneath the Variscan Iberian Massif than in the area affected by Alpine orogenesis. The Vsv crustal model outlines the Iberian Massif as a high shear wave velocity block and shows extremely low velocities in the Gulf of Cadiz and Gibraltar Arc. At mantle levels, a sharp boundary between the Aquitanean Basin and the Massif Central is imaged, with low Vsv beneath the Massif Central probably reflecting a remaining signature of the magma. To the south of Iberia, the geometry of the Alboran slab is captured by the model, while beneath the Atlas Mountains, widespread low Vsv and positive radial anisotropy is observed, favoring the edge‐driven convection model explaining the lithospheric thinning. The most relevant contribution of this work is mapping, for the first time at this scale, the radial anisotropy anomalies at crustal level, with higher values observed in the Alpine Iberia, dominated by present‐day extensional tectonics. Plain Language Summary: The Mediterranean is a unique place for geoscientists to investigate driving tectonic forces within a complex mobile belt. The tectonic and geodynamical history of the eastern and middle Mediterranean region since the late Eocene is relatively well documented; however, tectonic evolution of the westernmost Mediterranean remains debated. Using an unprecedented large seismic data set, a new high‐resolution Earth model is constructed using cutting‐edge seismic imaging techniques, which utilizes waveform records extracted from both ambient seismic noise and earthquakes. The new model is overall consistent with existing Earth models, and presents for the first time details relative to the presence of radial anisotropy, a feature affecting regions that have undergone extensional deformation. Mapping this feature could further help geoscientist's better reconstruct relative movement of the Africa plate and Iberian microplate, leading to an improved understanding of the dynamic evolution history of the western Mediterranean. Kurdish nationalism has been a source of fraught debate in international politics. The politics of a Kurdish state remains highly contentious due to the wide assortment of nation-states involved in what is commonly known as the "Kurdish question." From Shaykh 'Ubaydullah's invasion of Persia in 1880 to the 2017 Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government's referendum on independence, Kurds have asserted themselves as the largest national group without a state. This analysis discusses the history of Kurdish nationalism, as well as the obstacles faced by modern Kurdish state-builders. As it stands, the prospects for an independent Kurdish state are dismal. A combination of geography, poor governance, and great power politics has made the Kurdish question a contentious, and seemingly unsolvable, problem. This analysis will assess the feasibility of an independent Kurdish state by examining Kurdish and Middle Eastern history, modern geopolitical conflicts, and the conditions in which a Kurdish state might emerge. The population of approximately 30 million Kurds live divided between Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. Despite their common ethnicity and the seemingly arbitrary colonial borders of the Middle East, the Kurds of each country have faced unique struggles in their quest for an independent Kurdish state. The surgeon Anton von Eiselsberg can be regarded as one of Austria’s most influential physicians. This article presents historical materials in connection with Eiselsberg, including a letter from him sent on October 17, 1914, when World War I had already begun and the first wounded soldiers had to be treated in the field hospitals. Therefore, I focus on Eiselsberg’s role as an admiral staff physician in the Austrian Navy between 1914 and 1918. Eiselsberg’s treatment (1915 – 1917) of King Constantine I from Greece and Eiselsberg’s visit to the Osman Empire in 1918 are especially interesting and can be regarded as notable aspects of World War I history of medicine in the Middle East. In his autobiography, written in 1937, Anton von Eiselsberg clearly wrote that shots in the abdomen often could not be treated properly in World War I due to the lack of surgical capacities. Furthermore, I present biographical data of Eiselsberg’s life. The Eiselsberg family was part of Austria’s landed gentry. Anton von Eiselsberg attended a Christian Catholic monastery school as a child. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Swedish scholar Geo Widengren (1907–1996) was a towering figure on the international landscape of the history of religions. This essay reads Widengren as a forgotten classic, i.e., an author whose works have ceased to be read by contemporary students and scholars. Widengren considered himself an "all-around historian of religion" – an aim that nowadays, in the context of increased differentiation and specialization that came about with the successful growth of the discipline, has fallen from grace. Widengren emphasized the importance of history (which does not take the present state of affairs as a necessary given), and he advocated the attempt to get beyond value-judgements informed by Christian ideas and Western presumptions of historical supremacy. In a time of ground-breaking discoveries of new sources, Widengren set out to recontextualize the Bible, Judaism, and Christianity in Middle Eastern religious history (in particular Iran). The essay proposes that Widengren's de-Christianization of the history of religions resonated with societal changes that lastingly challenged the hegemony of Christianity in academia and other public (social and political) institutions. For Widengren, the gold standard of work in the history of religions was the ability to read sources in their original languages. Yet, rather than yielding objective and value-free interpretations, his sort of philology reimposed problematic assumptions and patterns that obscured rather than clarified his readings. Widengren advocated the separation of historical from systematic perspectives, but instead of following Joachim Wach's early program of systematische Religionswissenschaft for the latter he chose the somewhat misleading label "phenomenology." Like other phenomenologists and historicists, Widengren repudiated evolutionism – and he was one of the most outspoken critics of this approach in the history of our discipline. He also criticized the comparative method as practiced by evolutionists; yet Widengren was aware of the importance and pitfalls of comparison in the study of religion/s. The essay concludes with some reflections on the importance of scholars' roles as supervisors, mentors, and members of committees; Widengren assumed the role of paterfamilias in the development of the history of religions in Sweden, but the present generation of Swedish scholars have finally cast off his shadows. One such author was Muhammad Fahmy Husayn, an Egyptian writer whose book, I Principles of Political Economy i ([7]) sought to explain the debilitating economic and financial crisis that struck Egypt in 1907. The pandemic has revealed the deep and structural inequalities marking various lifeworlds and social landscapes, accelerating trends and vulnerabilities long at play. Relying in part on British political economists as well as Friedrich Engels, Husayn argued that monetary, financial, and economic crises were all interconnected and were structural, endemic to capitalism, and cyclical, and that "the economic crisis repeats itself every ten years" ([7]). One of the poems that is given as a reference for the history of the oud in the hadiths and works on music published in Turkey is Labîd b.Rebia's poem called Muallaqa. This reference is used when describing the place of music and in particular the oud instrument in hadiths during the Prophet's period or the era of bliss. On the other hand, it has been seen that this subject has not been examined yet in the studies on the history of oud published in Turkey. The subject is important in terms of illuminating the history of music in the Middle East, the history of Hejaz music in the period of the Prophet, and the history of the oud. For this reason, it is necessary to investigate whether the oud is mentioned in a couplet that is in the Muallaqa of Labîd, one of the Muhadram poets. Because of the word "kerine" in one of his couplets in his Muallaka, the "kirân" instrument is mentioned and this instrument is interpreted by various instruments, especially the "oud." As a result of this research, "kerine" may be primarily a singer or an instrumentalist, the "kiran" instrument mentioned to be played is not a "ud", but a "cank" instrument; in addition, this instrument's origin is not from Hicaz, but from Hire; although this word "muarreb," it has been revealed that it did not pass from Persian to Arabic. This article examines the value of the 'Cold War' analogy – which has become a commonly used shorthand to describe the Sino–American rivalry – for understanding the effects of the current great power competition in the Middle East. Instead of thinking in terms of the zero‐sum logic of the Cold War, we are using the Cold War history in the Middle East as a heuristic device to sharpen our understanding of today's dilemmas. In other words, we are arguing for the benefits of thinking with the analogy rather than adopting it as a kind of conceptual framework for decision‐making. Thinking with the analogy can help us identify how and why the Sino–American rivalry is shaping the Middle East's political and security context. After examining the merits of the analogy, we propose three 'lessons' from the Cold War history that can help us comprehend the potential effects of the Middle East on the Sino–American rivalry: Middle East actors can intensify the great power rivalry; Middle East conflicts may force reluctant regional actors to choose a side in the great power rivalry; and, lastly, Middle East energy resources flow in line with the producers' interests, not just the great powers' interests. For several decades historians of science have interrogated the relationship between empire and science, largely focusing on European imperial powers. At the same time, scholars have sought alternatives to an early diffusionist model of the spread of modern science, seeking to capture the multi-directional and dialogic development of science and its institutions in most parts of the globe. The papers in this special issue illuminate these questions with added attention to particular claims about the exceptionalism – or not – of Islamic societies' approach to science, modernity and politics. Each contribution centres individuals and groups who engaged with science theoretically or practically, taking seriously their analytical categories and how they understood and grappled with the social, economic and intellectual transformations happening around them. Collectively, these studies make the case for Middle Eastern and Ottoman history as useful sites for furthering our field's understanding of processes of the globalization of science and how authority, politics and science have been and continue to be interconnected. The year 2022 marks twelve years since the international community witnessed a series of protests that would become an important turning point in the history of modern Middle East, which is now known as the Arab Spring. It began with the self-immolation of a young Tunisian street fruit seller named Mohammed Bouazizi on 18 December 2010 and morphed into a series of the social upheavals and protests that followed in the spring of 2011; hence, the name-Arab Spring. These remonstrations energized the average Arab--hitherto weakened by decades of autocracy--with a new self-confidence and consequently, four powerful Arab political leaders were overthrown. The Arab Spring demonstrated the capacity of aggrieved citizens to question years of brutality and poor governance. This article explores the history of "Islamic Society" (al-Mujtamaʿ al-Islāmī), a concept whose widespread usage is paralleled by shallow understandings of its origins. Scholars of premodern Islamic history often use this term to describe the ideas and practices of Muslim communities under Islamic political rule, while historians of the Muslim Brotherhood highlight this leading Islamist movement's commitment to forming such a collective yet treat the concept as sui generis. This article, in turn, draws on a wide array of Islamic print media published by leading Islamic movements and state institutions in Egypt between 1898 and 1981 to tell a story of how this concept became intellectually viable and politically meaningful in the context of transition from colonial to postcolonial rule in the mid-twentieth century. Building on histories of religious nationalism which trace how religious nationalist visions produce novel understandings of religious identity rather than replicating prior models, the article explores the ways in which identity is linked to particular projects of religious practice. In doing so, it casts light on how religious nationalist projects seek to structure social life through calls to continuity with the past even as they adopt the core assumptions of the nation-state project. Specifically, it argues that, as Muslim thinkers, activists, and scholars navigated the transition from colonial to postcolonial rule, they turned to this concept to articulate dueling conceptions of religious change through state power and social mobilization alike.
