DEMOGRAPHY , *CHILDBEARING age , *SOCIAL dominance , *LATIN American history , *DEMOGRAPHIC change - Abstract
The Venezuelan exodus represents the largest known displacement of people in recent Latin American history. The regional crisis caused by this mass Venezuelan migration drove the development of multiple interagency initiatives (such as the R4V platform) as well as academic attempts to keep track of outflow intensity. However, little is known about the age and gender composition of the emigrants since most existing literature to date has focused primarily on total volume and country‐specific shares of migration outflows. This study examines the demographics of recent outflows from Venezuela, the chronology of associated changes, and the demographic implications for those remaining in the country. Official counts of Venezuelan‐born populations compiled in seven main destinations are used to estimate annual outflows by age and gender from 2011 to 2021. Changes in the demographic composition of emigration are traced using parameters of the Rogers–Castro model, specifically the children‐to‐labor force dominance, and by decomposing the age contributions to the annual gross migraproduction rate. In the early phase of the crisis (2014–2017), emigration flows had high child dependency ratios. As the crisis entered its most acute phase (peaking in 2019), the mean age of migrants increased. Outward migration has resulted in the current Venezuelan population having 20 percent fewer women of reproductive age and 17.8 percent fewer individuals of working age. Consequently, the share of the population aged 60 or older has increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FOOD security , *INTERNATIONAL cooperation , *HUMANITARIAN assistance - Abstract
The report explores various aspects of the influence of migration flows on food security. It begins by examining the definition and causes of migration and focuses on the origins and nature of migration flows to EU member states. The report assesses both positive and negative effects of migration on recipient countries, particularly its impact on food balance and food security. It also discusses the regulation of migration flows and risk management. Highlighting the importance of the analysis of migration flows, the report addresses the challenges associated with managing risks related to migration and food security. It suggests effective policy measures to mitigate these risks. Notably, migration flows can contribute to population growth in certain areas, leading to increased food demand and potential strains on existing food systems. To address these challenges, the report emphasizes the need for enhanced cooperation between countries. This involves sharing information, adopting best practices, establishing robust regulatory mechanisms, coordinating humanitarian aid, and establishing networks for swift crisis response. The aim of the present study is to underscore the importance of understanding the interplay between migration flows and food security. It advocates for access to safe and nutritionally balanced food for the most vulnerable segments of society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Migration and the dependence of rural communities on forest resources for subsistence have profoundly altered the composition and spatial structure of the landscapes of the border municipality of Kasenga in the southeast of DR Congo. The spatio-temporal dynamics of anthropogenic effects on forest ecosystems were mapped and quantified in the municipality of Kasenga using Landsat image classification from 1989 to 2022, combined with landscape ecology metrics to analyze spatial patterns. Our results show that the landscape has undergone profound disturbances. The area of large patches of forest that used to dominate the landscape has been reduced by a factor of 4 from 1989 to 2022, thus indicating the anthropogenic impact on the fragmentation of forest ecosystems. If in 33 years (from 1989 to 2022) forest has lost more than a third of their coverage through the dissection, fragmentation and attrition of patches, agriculture, grassland and wetland, and built-up and bare land have recorded a progressive dynamic resulting from the creation and aggregation of patches. These anthropogenic transformations, coupled with a lack of land management planning, will compromise the future of forest ecosystems since the level of landscape disturbance has quintupled from 1.1 to 5.5 in 33 years. There is then an urgent need to develop an integrated and participatory land management strategy to preserve forest resources and guarantee their resilience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Censuses are an important source of international migration flow data. However, their use is limited since they indirectly reflect migration, capturing migrant transitions over long intervals rather than migration events, whilst also underestimating the number of infants and deaths. Censuses also neglect migration of those who are native-born when they only include questions on country of birth, and have sparse temporal availability. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model to overcome these limitations and produce a set of robust annual migration flow estimates for South American countries. Our model translates five-year transition data from censuses into annual series, corrects biases that arise due to differences in measurement and census data quality across countries, and is grounded in migration theory to impute missing migration data between censuses. - Abstract
An inverse problem of reconstructing a coefficient in the differential equation of a model of development for a homogeneous biological population of organisms structured by age is considered. The model takes into account the impact of migration flows on population size changes. Conditions are established to ensure the uniqueness of the solution of the inverse problem. A brief overview of algorithms for the numerical solution of the inverse problem is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL networks ,MERGERS & acquisitions - Abstract
Acquisition decisions and outcomes are found to be associated with the availability of interstate migration‐based social networks. The likelihood of bidders pursuing targets headquartered in migration sending states increases with these social networks' size, in particular when (a) targets are in the same industry, (b) migration networks span distant states, and (c) targets are small. We also find smaller takeover premia and higher acquirer announcement returns in interstate transactions involving large migration networks. Our collective evidence is consistent with the notion that both enhanced expected synergies and information advantages may drive acquirers' propensity to choose targets from migration sending states. The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the process of resettling foreign subjects to the North-Western Caucasus in the latter half of the 19th century. The study is based on a wide range of issues, from the reasons for this process, its legal framework, identification of major migration flows, to the course of resettlement and analysis of its results. The author concludes that the resettlement of foreign subjects was initiated by the Russian authorities as part of solving large-scale state tasks of settling a vast territory. It is noted that this territory was cleared of mountain people to be settled by populations loyal to Russian statehood and to develop the region's economy. It is shown that on the part of the Russian authorities, this process was ensured by corresponding legislative acts and measures of material support for migrants. It is claimed that the resettlement of foreign subjects to the North-Western Caucasus had a significant impact on the economic development of the region. The author pays special attention to the issue of adaptation of resettlers in their new place of residence. The conclusion is drawn that their natural-productive adaptation occurred more intensively than their socioethnic adaptation.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the status of international migration and identify the problems of its economic and legal regulation in the context of ensuring financial and economic cooperation of countries in the conditions of increasing the influence of military factors. The results of the study prove that military factors have a dominant impact on the intensification of international migration processes. It is established that international migration is considered to be a complex, unpredictable socio-economic phenomenon that is gaining a global scale, covers a large number of countries, is difficult to regulate at the economic and legal level and periodically intensifies under the influence of factors and dangers of an economic, social, political and military nature. The authors prove a significant increase in the volume of international migration under the influence of the war of russia against Ukraine, which intensified as a result of the mass movement of the Ukrainian population outside the country in order to save their lives and health. The significant problems regarding the economic and legal regulation of international migration in the context of ensuring financial and economic cooperation of countries in the conditions of the increasing influence of military factors are identified, which are manifested in the inconsistency of international law with the provisions of national legislation of the countries of the world. It is found that the growth of international migration processes stimulates destructive changes in the international labour market, and causes an increase in unemployment and a decrease in employment rates at the national level. In the article proposes to review the existing mechanisms of legal regulation of international migration and protection of the rights of migrants outside Ukraine, and formulate an international strategy for harmonizing migration policies of different countries of the world. - Abstract
This paper examines the impact of migration and changes in the population's age structure on government expenditures on education in Ukraine. The cohort method, considering a group of people attending four main types of education, namely, preschool, general secondary, vocational and technical, and higher education, is used to analyze and forecast government expenditures in the medium and long term. The study results show that migration significantly impacts government budget expenditures on education, with the most significant impact being seen on preschool education, followed by higher education, while the impact on general secondary and vocational education is minimal. The number of people receiving education in one of the four main types of institutions funded by state and local budgets was predicted to gradually decrease during the forecast period, except for secondary and vocational education. The overall volume of state expenditures would gradually decrease, both in absolute terms and as a percentage of GDP. Improving educational processes and the quality of budget spending should become an area for state regulation to ensure quality education in all funding conditions. This research's leading theoretical and practical results show the efficiency of this methodology for analyzing and forecasting budget expenditures on education. They can be helpful in the short and medium terms, considering all potential changes in demographic indicators regarding the population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Being a complex and multi-criteria phenomenon, the international migration can have a lot of different meanings, which suppose different scopes and methods of estimating various data, depending on the hypotheses and research objectives pursued. In the last decade the mass-media also gave an increased importance to the phenomenon and in the era of fake news, it led to the fact that the magnitude of the phenomenon was often communicated differently from the real situation or the existing statistics. Even though there is a great diversity of data sources that could be used to estimate international migration flows, these are not directly oriented to measure migration, so great difficulties in terms of data comparability occur very often. In Romania the phenomenon of international migration has taken a large scale, the country being on the first places worldwide in terms of labor force exits to destination countries, but, practically, the Romanian authorities have very less information regarding the residence of Romanian citizens abroad and, implicitly, no data is collected regarding the real volume of the migration phenomenon. This paper aims to inventory the available data sources regarding international migration from Romania and, as much as possible, to propose solutions by which this phenomenon could be better quantified to support the development of effective migration policies. The research methodology consists in the theoretical analysis of data sources and indicators that measure the migration phenomenon in order to identify a possibility to quantify the volume of the migrant population by proposing a model that calculates the potential migrant workforce calculated as a difference between the labor resource and the employed population.

HUMAN migration patterns ,SOCIAL belonging ,OPEN-ended questions - Abstract
Nowadays, new branches of research are proposing the use of non-traditional data sources for the study of migration trends in order to find an original methodology to answer open questions about cross-border human mobility. New knowledge extracted from these data must be validated using traditional data, which are however distributed across different sources and difficult to integrate. In this context we present the Multi-aspect Integrated Migration Indicators (MIMI) dataset, a new dataset of migration indicators (flows and stocks) and possible migration drivers (cultural, economic, demographic and geographic indicators). This was obtained through acquisition, transformation and integration of disparate traditional datasets together with social network data from Facebook (Social Connectedness Index). This article describes the process of gathering, embedding and merging traditional and novel variables, resulting in this new multidisciplinary dataset that we believe could significantly contribute to nowcast/forecast bilateral migration trends and migration drivers. - Abstract
Spatial spillovers and heterogeneity are rarely discussed in the migration flow pattern analysis, despite China's vast and diverse territory. This paper used spatial interaction model to capture the spatial features and relationships between migration flows and their potential factors. We found that migration flows were significantly characterized by geographic heterogeneity, spatial dependence and spillover. Spatial effects and population size exerted a tangible influence in relation to 2005–2015 migration flows within a given region and its surroundings. Promoting an urbanization policy affected the flows in the origin and destination regions differently. These findings revealed that the attractiveness of eastern coastal regions as destinations remained stronger than that of the central and western regions. Consequently, the trend of massive eastbound migration flow remains uncurbed despite the decade of urban development in the central and western regions. These findings also suggested that urbanization in central or western China will undergo circular promotion due to the increasing urbanization level itself. Smaller gaps will strengthen the synergetic development of population migration and urbanization between the regions and their neighbors. The new-type urbanization policy should focus on diminishing the disparities between coastal and inner regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The supply and demand of labour in the market can often experience profound transformations as a result of an ageing population. This can substantially impact the sustainable development of human society. Since the 1970s, China's internal migration has continued to increase, but there has been a shift toward an ageing trend since the year 2000. How does the change of age structure interact with socioeconomic development to produce changes in the supply and demand of labour over space and time? This study constructs a spatial dynamic panel data model of interprovincial migration flows in China from 1985 to 2015 in order to quantify the spatiotemporal impacts of age structure on migration. The preliminary results indicate that age structure plays the most important role among regional socioeconomic characteristics of migration, dominated by the large supply, demand, and cross elasticities of labour population. Labour demand and the cross elasticities of total dependency ratio rank second. Comparatively, the total elasticities of regional GDP and wage levels on migration flows are not as significant as expected. This study lays the groundwork for identifying the interaction mechanisms of migration systems and provides important insights on regional sustainable development from the perspective of ageing. Between 2001 and 2007 an exceptional number of immigrants arrived in the province of Castelló (Spain), the majority of whom were from Romania, attracted by the plentiful employment prospects offered by a model of production based on the intensive labour requirements of the ceramic tile and construction industries. The effects of the international economic crisis have been particularly serious in the area of Castelló, where employment has fallen by 20% in just three years. Immigrations flows from Romania have fallen, while the number of those leaving has increased, and migration plans have been modified although the size of the immigrant stock has not fallen significantly due to continued family reunification. The differential between the Spanish and Romanian welfare states, the degree of adaptation in the host society and the strategies developed by the immigrant population explain why returning migrant numbers remain moderate and migratory circulation has increased.

- Abstract
Researchers have long been considering the role of spatial migration linkages in the housing market as it is important to help planners and policymakers review housing supply and estimate housing demand to provide sufficient housing supply to meet household needs in future. Many have investigated the trade-off between house price and migration but little attention has been paid to exploring their spatial interactions in housing market areas at the local level. To fill the gap, this paper intended to use a GIS approach to uncover the inside values of the 2011 migration flow data and the 2011 house price data to identify the spatial migration patterns in the housing market areas for Greater Manchester in the UK. The results showed that there were specific spatial linkages in various local areas, and finding the problematic patterns may help us make the local housing market operate better by changing the existing problematic patterns, and improving housing conditions and/or transportation system. The contribution of this paper was to demonstrate the usefulness of the GIS approach in generating the useful information hidden in the big data sources to generate new knowledge regarding the spatial relationship between the components of the local housing market system. Background: This article investigates how European public opinion has responded to short-term variations in regional immigration over the past decade (2010-2019). Methods: Combining data from the European Social Survey and the European Union Labour Force Survey and using multilevel modelling, we test how natives’ opinions over migration policy and the contribution of immigrants to society have changed with the net rate of international migrants in 183 EU regions from 21 countries. Results: We find that while European natives living in regions with a higher share of foreign-born populations are generally less anti-immigrant, a short-term increase in the number of immigrants within a given region is associated with more negative attitudes. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate the importance of temporal dynamics for attitudes to immigration. They also point to the relevance of regional variations in attitudes beside cross-country differences.

Evidence-based policies to monitor and manage migration flows require accurate data. Data collection on international migration flow statistics is based on a range of data sources and measures. Discrepancies in reported migration flow data are apparent when comparing flow statistics from receiving countries on the number of arriving migrants by their country of origin with statistics from sending countries on the number of departing migrants by their country of destination. In recent decades the relative incompleteness and non-comparability in reported migration statistics have motivated a number of initiatives to improve data in European countries. In this paper we illustrate graphically the discrepancies between sending and receiving migration flow statistics provided to Eurostat by European countries. We find a reduction of the discrepancies between receiving and sending migration flow data after the implementation of regulations to improve the availability and comparability of migration data.

This article presents the main recent developments in migration trends to and from Belarus. It studies these trends via the migration systems theory lenses, according to which Belarus belongs to the Eurasian migration system. The most significant migration flows are directed towards Russia, due to the existence of the Union State. However, over the last decade, Belarusian statistics have shown a gradual transformation in the direction of these migration flows. After the recession in Russia in 2015, the number of emigrants from Belarus to EU countries increased. The most significant changes have occurred in the migration dynamics between Belarus and Poland and Lithuania. The existence of the Pole’s Card makes it more difficult to measure the number of Belarusian immigrants in Poland, therefore, I provide a comparative analysis of Belarusian and Polish statistics in order to show a more realistic picture of the number and structure of Belarusian emigrants and the problem of underestimation in the sending country. Particular attention is paid to the consequences of the political situation in Belarus after 2020; this has become an additional push factor for emigrants and may also lead to a further reduction of Belarusian migratory links within the Eurasian migration system. Thus, the statistics for 2021 show a significant increase in the number of Belarusian emigrants to the EU, while emigration to Russia has remained at the same level.

- Abstract
This article presents actualities of issues of migration. Migration is a highly discussed and contested issue in most transit or destination States. The analysis of current trends in migration leads to the conclusion that this issue increased in the last decade and have tendencies to continue in near future. It means that more people will decide to change their place of living, and every country will become a source of transit or final destination of migration. Migration processes taking place within state borders. Control of national borders is seen as an essential aspect of the sovereign State. States adopt increasingly restrictive rules, same times fueled by popular hostility to immigrants. The main task, by using content analysis method is to show, that migration issues remain important in today's context and require continuous focus and adaptation of common instruments to manage migration flows. As illustrative example was taken data collected by Frontex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This article presents the results of the analysis of the volumes and directions of migration flows of the population to nine Arctic regions of Russia. Federal subjects of Russia with an excess working population are identified based on statistic data on the status of regional labor markets. The hypothesis of the role of labor-surplus regions in the supply of the Arctic with human resources is tested. The analysis is based on data from the official statistical reports of the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) on interregional migration of the population at ages of 14 years and older. Qualitative aspects of the population migration to the Arctic are analyzed with respect to the reasons for the change of migrants' place of residence and the level of their education. The geographical structure of migration flows to the Arctic regions is determined based on summary information, using statistical analysis methods. The results of the analysis show that only a small share of the total migration flow from 15 labor-surplus regions is directed to the Arctic. It has been revealed that labor-surplus regions are characterized by a positive balance of population migration to the Arctic unlike other regions of Russia. It is shown based on the example of the Republic of Dagestan that the regions of the North Caucasus may be suppliers of labor resources for the Arctic regions of Russia. Fifteen Russian regions with the largest annual number of migrants to the Arctic have been identified. The results of the study may be used by relevant authorities for the implementation of policy aimed at attracting labor resources to the Arctic regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review paper is devoted to a brief overview of results and models concerning flows in networks and channels of networks. First of all, we conduct a survey of the literature in several areas of research connected to these flows. Then, we mention certain basic mathematical models of flows in networks that are based on differential equations. We give special attention to several models for flows of substances in channels of networks. For stationary cases of these flows, we present probability distributions connected to the substance in the nodes of the channel for two basic models: the model of a channel with many arms modeled by differential equations and the model of a simple channel with flows of substances modeled by difference equations. The probability distributions obtained contain as specific cases any probability distribution of a discrete random variable that takes values of 0 , 1 , ... . We also mention applications of the considered models, such as applications for modeling migration flows. Special attention is given to the connection of the theory of stationary flows in channels of networks and the theory of the growth of random networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is an attempt to critically analyze the policy of the 45th President of the United States Donald Trump regarding the southern border of the USA with Mexico. The paper analyzes the approach of Washington under the administration of D. Trump to the problem of the joint border between USA and Mexico, as well as conducts a comprehensive assessment of the main programs underlying the most pressing changes in D. Trumps policy in this area. In particular, the paper focuses on the structure of migration flows between 2017 and 2019, as well as on the reasons behind those changes. The author looks at the root causes of the unprecedented increase in the flow of potential migrants and refugees, and correlates them with the ongoing political, economic and humanitarian crises in the Central American sub-region. An important focus is given to the increasing role of Mexico in the settlement of this issue, as well as to the potential impact of such cooperation between the authorities of the United States and Mexico on the situation in Central America and Latin America in general. The significance of this paper is determined by the objective necessity of academic evaluation of the Donald Trumps administration impact on the United States governmental and foreign policy course. The author argues that the approach of the 45th president of the United States regarding traditionally sensitive issues like US - Mexico border control and migration has been mostly based on coercive tactics with obvious disregard towards social basis and root-causes of the issue at hand. One of the most distinguished traits of this approach is the practice of outsourcing managing the problem of refugees from Central America to the border-country, which in this specific case is Mexico.

Migration in West Africa has been taking place for centuries for different reasons. Many dimensions of migration remain insufficiently documented and poorly understood. In particular, factors of migration in destination areas and areas of origin are still lacking comprehensive analysis. In this paper, we bring a new perspective to the model of push and pull factors of migration in West Africa by reviewing and analyzing interview-based case studies of migration related to Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria, as well as to the associated migration routes. The overall aim of this study was to determine the areas that individuals historically chose as destinations for migration and what they perceived to be the distinctive conditions in those areas. Hence, characteristic features about destination areas and areas of origin were identified and located in maps, whereas interrelationships among push and pull factors were illustrated by means of Sankey diagrams. With these tools, we provide a novel combination for visualizing the reasons for migration. The literature review emphasizes the complex relationships between different drivers of migration, with environmental and economic factors emerging as the most important drivers of migration in the focus countries. Moreover, the identified and mapped migration patterns suggest that individuals migrate mainly from the northern part of a particular country to its center or southern regions. This scientific approach shows that the spatial allocation of migratory movements can facilitate assessments on how to meet specific Sustainable Development Goals and to improve regional policies. This study evaluates the spatial patterns of flows generated from geo-located Twitter data to measure human migration. Using geo-located tweets continuously collected in the U.S. from 2013 to 2015, we identified Twitter users who migrated per changes in county-of-residence every two years and compared the Twitter-estimated county-to-county migration flows with the ones from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). To evaluate the spatial patterns of Twitter migration flows when representing the IRS counterparts, we developed a normalized difference representation index to visualize and identify those counties of over-/under-representations in the Twitter estimates. Further, we applied a multidimensional spatial scan statistic approach based on a Poisson process model to detect pairs of origin and destination regions where the over-/under-representativeness occurred. The results suggest that Twitter migration flows tend to under-represent the IRS estimates in regions with a large population and over-represent them in metropolitan regions adjacent to tourist attractions. This study demonstrated that geo-located Twitter data could be a sound statistical proxy for measuring human migration. Given that the spatial patterns of Twitter-estimated migration flows vary significantly across the geographic space, related studies will benefit from our approach by identifying those regions where data calibration is necessary. The complexity and multidimensionality of international migration, as a form of international economic relations in the current conditions of the global economy, requires a review of scientific approaches to its study and understanding. The paper aims to develop a systematic study of the international migration of human resources under conditions of social transformation, by analyzing the positive and negative economic consequences for labor-exporting and labor-importing countries. The methods of cognition used in this study included statistical methods and comparative analysis, to assess the geo-economic risks facing countries and regions; economic–mathematical modeling with correlation–regression to build a model for assessing the attractiveness of migration, and for verification and testing of the model; and a graphic–analytical approach to illustrate the examined processes. As a result, a system of determinants of the formation of motives for migration is suggested. These include economic, socio-demographic, political–security, linguistic–cultural, and ecological–natural determinants. The suggested mechanism for parameterizing the migration attractiveness of countries is the identification of which indicators should be taken into account when studying and formalizing the preconditions of migration processes. Based on the identified need to compare countries according to factors of "attraction–repulsion", using the proposed list of determinants of migration motives, a model of a country's migration attractiveness was formalized. The model was tested using EU indicators for 2014–2020. The relationship between migration attractiveness and the number of asylum applications in the EU was analyzed, and a high inverse relationship density was established. As a result, the use of the developed model makes it possible to explain and predict migration flows between countries, through the prism of the migratory attractiveness of countries for potential migrants. The paper addresses an extremely current phenomenon: migration in opposite directions of FDI and labour, in context with the permanent need for economic growth and welfare. The analysis is carried out over a period of 12 years, in the context of setting objectives and working hypotheses regarding the realization of a correlation model of phenomena and optimization of migration flows in order to obtain welfare through economic development. The results of the research will reflect the relevance of the aggregation of the two migratory flows (FDI and labour) in order to obtain the financial leverage effect and the economic welfare in the analysed regions (EU, Germany and Romania). The conclusions of the study reflect the relevance of the method, the validity of the model and its relevance for the decision forums interested in the economic development and in increasing the population welfare. The world is in constant motion, both in terms of evolution and change of territory. Migration flows have existed since the appearance of humans on earth, even though the majority of the population considers it as a recent phenomenon. Humans have always migrated in groups and as individuals to seek freedom from war and conflict, to escape hunger and poverty, to find new economic opportunities and employment, to flee from religious intolerance or political repression, or even to trade and to travel to new places. However, the continuous increase of migration flows throughout history has had certain stagnation, caused by massive events, as in the case of our research, COVID-19. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on migration flows. The relevance of the topic is due to the fact that the world is going through the biggest pandemic in the history, and analyzing all the consequences and effects during its evolution, can help us determine opportunities how to improve the negative impact on the economy, society and politics. As follows, the main purpose of this paper is to emphasize the effectes and consequences of COVID-19 upon the migration flows and remittances, by analyzing the 2000-2020 period with the intention to understand and evaluate the affected subjects and consequences on the global economy.
