Abstract Structural superlubricity (SSL) is a state of contact with no wear and ultralow friction. SSL has been characterized at contact with van der Waals (vdW) layered materials, while its stability under extreme loading conditions has not been assessed. By designing both self-mated and non-self-mated vdW contacts with materials chosen for their high strengths, we report outstanding robustness of SSL under very high pressures in experiments. The incommensurate self-mated vdW contact between graphite interfaces can maintain the state of SSL under a pressure no lower than 9.45 GPa, and the non-self-mated vdW contact between a tungsten tip and graphite substrate remains stable up to 3.74 GPa. Beyond this critical pressure, wear is activated, signaling the breakdown of vdW contacts and SSL. This unexpectedly strong pressure-resistance and wear-free feature of SSL breaks down the picture of progressive wear. Atomistic simulations show that lattice destruction at the vdW contact by pressure-assisted bonding triggers wear through shear-induced tearing of the single-atomic layers. The correlation between the breakdown pressure and material properties shows that the bulk modulus and the first ionization energy are the most relevant factors, indicating the combined structural and electronic effects. Impressively, the breakdown pressures defined by the SSL interface could even exceed the strength of materials in contact, demonstrating the robustness of SSL. These findings offer a fundamental understanding of wear at the vdW contacts and guide the design of SSL-enabled applications.

Abstract Although Prussian blue nanozymes (PBNZ) are widely applied in various fields, their catalytic mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we investigate the long-term catalytic performance of PBNZ as peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) mimetics to elucidate their lifespan and underlying mechanisms. Unlike our previously reported Fe3O4 nanozymes, which exhibit depletable POD-like activity, the POD and CAT-like activities of PBNZ not only persist but slightly enhance over prolonged catalysis. We demonstrate that the irreversible oxidation of PBNZ significantly promotes catalysis, leading to self-increasing catalytic activities. The catalytic process of the pre-oxidized PBNZ can be initiated through either the conduction band pathway or the valence band pathway. In summary, we reveal that PBNZ follows a dual-path electron transfer mechanism during the POD and CAT-like catalysis, offering the advantage of a long service life.

Abstract Ionotropic gelation is widely used to fabricate targeting nanoparticles (NPs) with polysaccharides, leveraging their recognition by specific lectins. Despite the fabrication scheme simply involves self-assembly of differently charged components in a straightforward manner, the identification of a potent combinatory formulation is usually limited by structural diversity in compound collections and trivial screen process, imposing crucial challenges for efficient formulation design and optimization. Herein, we report a diversity-oriented combinatory formulation screen scheme to identify potent gene delivery cargo in the context of precision cardiac therapy. Distinct categories of cationic compounds are tested to construct RNA delivery system with an ionic polysaccharide framework, utilizing a high-throughput microfluidics workstation coupled with streamlined NPs characterization system in an automatic, step-wise manner. Sequential computational aided interpretation provides insights in formulation optimization in a broader scenario, highlighting the usefulness of compound library diversity. As a result, the out-of-bag NPs, termed as GluCARDIA NPs, are utilized for loading therapeutic RNA to ameliorate cardiac reperfusion damages and promote the long-term prognosis. Overall, this work presents a generalizable formulation design strategy for polysaccharides, offering design principles for combinatory formulation screen and insights for efficient formulation identification and optimization.

Abstract The chromatin modifier GRAIN WEIGHT 6a (GW6a) enhances rice grain size and yield. However, little is known about its gene network determining grain size. Here, we report that MITOGEN-ACTIVED PROTEIN KINASE 6 (OsMAPK6) and E3 ligase CHANG LI GENG 1 (CLG1) interact with and target GW6a for phosphorylation and ubiquitylation, respectively. Unexpectedly, however, in vitro and in vivo assays reveal that both of the two post-translational modifications stabilize GW6a. Furthermore, we uncover two major GW6a phosphorylation sites (serine142 and threonine186) targeted by OsMAPK6 serving an important role in modulating grain size. In addition, our genetic and molecular results suggest that the OsMAPK6-GW6a and CLG1-GW6a axes are crucial and operate in a non-additive manner to control grain size. Overall, our findings identify a previously unknown mechanism by which phosphorylation and ubiquitylation non-additively stabilize GW6a to enhance grain size, and reveal correlations and interactions of these posttranslational modifications during rice grain development.

Abstract Background Neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy (NICT) plus esophagectomy has emerged as a promising treatment option for locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (LA-ESCC). Pathologic complete response (pCR) is a key indicator associated with great efficacy and overall survival (OS). However, there are insufficient indicators for the reliable assessment of pCR. Methods 192 patients with LA-ESCC treated with NICT from December 2019 to October 2023 were recruited. According to pCR status, patients were categorized into pCR group (22.92%) and non-pCR group (77.08%). Radiological features of pretreatment and preoperative CT images were extracted. Logistic and COX regressions were trained to predict pathological response and prognosis, respectively. Results Four of the selected radiological features were combined to construct an ESCC preoperative imaging score (ECPI-Score). Logistic models revealed independent associations of ECPI-Score and vascular sign with pCR, with AUC of 0.918 in the training set and 0.862 in the validation set, respectively. After grouping by ECPI-Score, a higher proportion of pCR was observed among the high-ECPI group and negative vascular sign. Kaplan Meier analysis demonstrated that recurrence-free survival (RFS) with negative vascular sign was significantly better than those with positive (P = 0.038), but not for OS (P = 0.310). Conclusions This study demonstrates dynamic radiological features are independent predictors of pCR for LA-ESCC treated with NICT. It will guide clinicians to make accurate treatment plans.

Abstract Coat protein complex I (COPI) vesicles mediate the retrograde transfer of cargo between Golgi cisternae and from the Golgi to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). However, their roles in the cell cycle and proliferation are unclear. This study shows that TANGO6 associates with COPI vesicles via two transmembrane domains. The TANGO6 N- and C-terminal cytoplasmic fragments capture RNA polymerase II subunit B (RPB) 2 in the cis-Golgi during the G1 phase. COPI-docked TANGO6 carries RPB2 to the ER and then to the nucleus. Functional disruption of TANGO6 hinders the nuclear entry of RPB2, which accumulates in the cytoplasm, causing cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase. The conditional depletion or overexpression of TANGO6 in mouse hematopoietic stem cells results in compromised or expanded hematopoiesis. Our study results demonstrate that COPI vesicle-associated TANGO6 plays a role in the regulation of cell cycle progression by directing the nuclear transfer of RPB2, making it a potential target for promoting or arresting cell expansion.

The rapid and large-scale renewable energy development poses new challenges for the traditional power grid, particularly with the increasing utilization of high-power electronic interfaces. To address this, a novel grid simulator topology and its control strategy are proposed, which can generate various required waveforms with high performance. The grid simulator adopts a modular multilevel structure, a three-phase PWM module, and an H-bridge module with a shared DC bus. Model predictive control (MPC) outputs high-quality, fast voltage waveforms for accurate voltage tracking. Additionally, the model reference adaptive control (MRAC) is integrated into the PWM converter in the pre-stage to estimate the network side inductance value, which is used to improve the system’s robustness. Moreover, a switching distribution method is proposed for feedforward control to enhance reliability. Through simulation and experiment, it is verified that the proposed power grid simulator and its control strategy can effectively and accurately generate various fault waveforms such as voltage drop, voltage abrupt change, and abrupt frequency change. As a result, it can be used as test equipment for renewable energy or power electronic equipment.

ObjectiveAiming at the area coverage problem of multiple autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), this paper investigates a coverage path planning (CPP) strategy based on an electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS). MethodFirst, according to the information of sea, land and water depth from ECDIS, an environmental model for the area coverage of ASVs is established based on the grid method. Second, an area division method based on the roulette wheel selection method is proposed to solve the problem of irregular area division in divided areas based on the robots' initial position method, and achieve the reasonable area division of ASVs in the grid map. Finally, a template-based area coverage path planning method is proposed to solve the problem of generating too many turns in paths generated by the spanning tree coverage agorithm.ResultsA human-machine interactive simulation platform for ASVs based on ECDIS is established to verify the effectiveness of the proposed area coverage path planning method based on the roulette wheel method and template method in optimizing the number of turns in the planning path. ConclusionThe proposed area coverage path planning method for ASVs based on ECDIS can be used to achieve coverage path planning in target mission areas at sea.

Abstract Postbiotics have received increasing interest for their storage stability and safety compared to probiotics, as well as their potential functionality. In this study, edible Lactobacillus plantarum J26 postbiotics (J26P) were prepared by spray drying using skimmed milk as the medium, and 1113 compounds were identified. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cholesterol lowering effect of J26P on hypercholesterolemic mice induced by a high‐fat and high‐cholesterol diet (HCD). The results suggest that J26P significantly alleviated weight gain and appetite reduction in HCD mice. J26P also improved serum and liver biochemical parameters at various levels, including lower total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) in the serum, and TC, TG, LDL‐C, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, and glutamic‐pyruvic transaminase in the liver, and increase high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol in the serum and liver. Moreover, liver histopathologic examinations revealed that J26P significantly inhibited fat accumulation and degeneration in hypercholesterolemic mice and increased the expression of liver uncoupling protein 1. Furthermore, the J26P intervention effectively promoted the reduction of cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemic mice via the LXRα‐CYP7A1‐bile acid‐excretion pathway, which was corroborated by the increased fecal total cholesterol and fecal total bile acid levels. This work provided a theoretical basis for the industrial development of postbiotics and the alleviation of hypercholesterolemia and its complications.

Abstract Background Proteins with the jumonji (JMJ)-C domain belong to the histone demethylase family and contribute to reverse histone methylation. Although JMJ-C family genes have an essential role in regulating plant growth and development, the characterization of the JMJ-C family genes in melon has not been uncovered. Results In this study, a total of 17 JMJ-C proteins were identified in melon (Cucumis melo L.). CmJMJs were categorized into five subfamilies based on the specific conserved domain: KDM4/JHDM3, KDM5/JARID1, JMJD6, KDM3/JHDM2, and JMJ-C domain-only. The chromosome localization analyses showed that 17 CmJMJs were distributed on nine chromosomes. Cis-acting element analyses of the 17 CmJMJ genes showed numerous hormone, light, and stress response elements distributed in the promoter region. Covariance analysis revealed one pair of replicated fragments (CmJMJ3a and CmJMJ3b) in 17 CmJMJ genes. We investigated the expression profile of 17 CmJMJ genes in different lateral organs and four developmental stages of fruit by RNA-seq transcriptome analysis and RT-qPCR. The results revealed that most CmJMJ genes were prominently expressed in female flowers, ovaries, and developing fruits, suggesting their active role in melon fruit development. Subcellular localization showed that the fruit-related CmJMJ5a protein is specifically localized in the cell nucleus. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the gene structure, classification, and evolution of JMJ-C in melon and supports the clarification of the JMJ-C functions in further research.

Extensional strike-slip basins have unique structural features that influence both sub-sags and traps. Despite previous investigations into the extension-strike-slip fault system, there remains a gap in the comprehensive analysis of its influence on sub-sag formation and trap development. The Huanghekoudong and Miaoxi’nan sub-sags within the Bohai Bay Basin, intersected by the Tan-Lu Fault Zone, offer exemplary cases for examining the interplay between strike-slip and extensional tectonic regimes. The neotectonic strike-slip movements along the Tan-Lu Fault Zone have given rise to various extensional strike-slip overlap zones in these sub-sags, rendering these locales ideal for investigating the dynamics of strike-slip and extensional tectonic processes. Employing three-dimensional seismic data, well logs, and a newly constructed sequence stratigraphic framework, our research delineates the geometric and kinematic phenomena characteristic of the extensional strike-slip fault system, including the dynamics of extensional fault deformation and interaction through time. By scrutinizing the fault system’s vital role in shaping sub-sag evolution and trap genesis, we present a comprehensive model that significantly contributes to our understanding of structural trapping dynamics. This model not only fine-tunes existing trapping models but also offers invaluable insights for future exploration strategies within the Bohai Bay Basin and other similar extensional strike-slip basins worldwide. Our findings highlight the novel and significant implications of the extensional strike-slip fault system in controlling sub-sag and trap features, thus bridging a notable gap in existing geotechnical knowledge.

Neurological disorders, particularly stroke, pose significant public health challenges, prompting a comprehensive investigation into the intricate interplay between ferroptosis and immune responses. This study aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms of stroke, emphasizing the connection between ferroptosis and immune regulation. Objectives include identifying differentially expressed genes in stroke patients, assessing immune cell subtype activation, employing advanced predictive modeling to pinpoint key candidate genes such as STMN1 and ATG16L1, exploring associations with immune cell subtypes, and revealing critical pathways, such as matrix degradation and inflammatory responses, activated in stroke through Gene Set Variation Analysis (GSVA). A comprehensive approach was adopted, involving differential gene expression analysis, functional enrichment analysis, weighted gene co-expression network analysis, Lasso regularization, random forest models, and the CIBERSORT (https://cibersortx.stanford.edu) algorithm, to assess immune cell subtypes. The study pinpointed genes with significant expression differences in stroke patients, highlighting the activation of Th17 cells and the NF-κ B signaling pathway. Key candidate genes, including STMN1 and ATG16L1, were identified using advanced predictive modeling. The relative abundance of immune cell subtypes, particularly natural killer cells (NK cells) and T cell subgroups, was associated with stroke through CIBERSORT. GSVA uncovered the activation of critical biological pathways such as matrix degradation and inflammatory responses. The analysis pinpointed STMN1 and ATG16L1 as robust predictors, emphasizing their potential as therapeutic targets. Th17 cells and the NF-κ B signaling pathway emerged as pivotal contributors to stroke pathogenesis. Notably, NK cells and specific T cell subgroups demonstrated significant associations with stroke. GSVA further illuminated the activation of key pathways, providing deeper insights into the biological processes underlying stroke. This study sheds light on crucial genes and pathways implicated in stroke, emphasizing the roles of ferroptosis and immune cell subtypes. The identified genes and pathways offer promising avenues for targeted therapeutic interventions in stroke, with a broader implication for advancing neurological disorder treatments through innovative perspectives on ferroptosis and immune regulation.

The cigarette filter is an essential component of modern cigarettes and studying the flow distribution within the cigarette filter is of great significance in reducing the harm of cigarettes and optimizing smoking sensations. As the object of numerical simulation research, a three-dimensional model of the cigarette was accurately constructed through micro-CT reverse engineering, achieving a scanning accuracy of 4.05 μm. An overall porous media model of the cigarette filter was established to characterize the pressure distribution inside the filter. Based on the three-dimensional reconstruction, a local simulation model of the cavity-filtered filter was created by extracting a 1/36 geometric model. The simulation results of the overall porous media model of the cigarette filter were used as the pressure boundary conditions for the local simulation model of the cavity-filtered filter, and the effects of the wrapped paper and cavity on the flow field were analyzed. The results show that the simulated pressure drop in the overall porous media model of the cigarette filter had a deviation of less than 3.5% compared to the experimental results. This suggests that the porous media model can effectively predict the changes in pressure drop within the filter. When both wrapped paper and cavity were present, the velocity at the interface between acetate fiber and wrapped paper increased by 141.54%, while the pressure approached 0 Pa. Similarly, at the interface between acetate fiber and cavity, the velocity increased by 130.77%. It indicates that both wrapped paper and cavity significantly influenced the flow field characteristics within the cigarette filter. Additionally, as the porosity of the wrapped paper gradually increased from 0.69 to 0.99 in the radial direction, the fluid velocity increased by 14.46%, while the fluid pressure decreased by 29.09%. These changes were particularly evident when the porosity was below 0.87.

Narrow bipolar events (NBEs) are intriguing intra-cloud discharge that have attracted enormous interest in the lightning community. They come with two polarities that dominate at different altitudes in thunderclouds. The sources of negative NBEs are usually located near the top of thunderclouds; those of positive NBEs are at the middle levels. NBEs may occur at the onset of lightning. The electrical properties of NBEs remain poorly understood. We present here the first comparative study of the electrical characteristics of negative and positive NBEs. To derive electrical parameters from the fast electric field change waveforms of 1673 positive NBEs and 364 negative NBEs recorded by the Jianghuai Area Sferic Array (JASA) in China, we use an improved method based on the transmission line model. This approach concludes that negative NBEs occurring at high altitudes tend to produce a narrower current pulse and take a shorter time to traverse the channel than their positive counterparts. Moreover, compared to positive NBEs, a larger portion of negative NBEs are associated with slightly greater peak current moments but smaller overall charge moments. The differences reported herein between electrical properties of negative and positive NBEs suggest that charge distribution in NBE-producing thunderstorms tends to vary systematically with altitude.

Abstract Background Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome is a highly prevalent syndrome. Previous studies showed that extracorporeal shockwave therapy and myofascial release therapy could improve the quality of life in patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). Theoretically, combined therapy with extracorporeal shockwave therapy and myofascial release therapy will likely have significant advantages in treating CP/CPPS. We, therefore, present a protocol for conducting a well-designed randomized controlled trial to compare the efficacy and safety of each therapy. Methods The proposed study will be a three-group randomized control trial (RCT) design that includes 150 participants from Zhongda Hospital Affiliated to Southeast University, with equal allocation of participants to the three intervention groups. The study duration will be 8 weeks, which includes a 4-week treatment period and a 4-week follow-up period. The primary outcome will be the changes in surface electromyography (sEMG) assessment and National Institutes of Health-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI). The secondary outcomes will include the changes in three-dimensional quantification, shear wave elastography (SWE), and sympathetic skin response (SSR) testing. Assessments will be conducted before the intervention (T0), before the 5th intervention (T1), immediately after the 8th intervention (T2), and the 4th week after the end of the 8th intervention (T3). Discussion This trial will compare the differences in efficacy between single extracorporeal shockwave therapy, single myofascial release therapy, and combined therapy to select the most appropriate treatment option for patients with CP/CPPS. The possible pathogenesis of CP/CPPS would also be analyzed by comparing the intercorrelation between each objective and subjective measurement (NIH-CPSI score, sEMG, SWE, SSR). Abstract Structural superlubricity, a state of nearly zero friction and no wear between two contact surfaces under relative sliding, holds immense potential for research and application prospects in micro-electro-mechanical systems devices, mechanical engineering, and energy resources. A critical step towards the practical application of structural superlubricity is the mass transfer and high throughput performance evaluation. Limited by the yield rate of material preparation, existing automated systems, such as roll printing or massive stamping, are inadequate for this task. In this paper, a machine learning-assisted system is proposed to realize fully automated selective transfer and tribological performance measurement for structural superlubricity materials. Specifically, the system has a judgment accuracy of over 98% for the selection of micro-scale graphite flakes with structural superlubricity properties and complete the 100 graphite flakes assembly array to form various pre-designed patterns within 100 mins, which is 15 times faster than manual operation. Besides, the system is capable of automatically measuring the tribological performance of over 100 selected flakes on Si3N4, delivering statistical results for new interface which is beyond the reach of traditional methods. With its high accuracy, efficiency, and robustness, this machine learning-assisted system promotes the fundamental research and practical application of structural superlubricity.

Abstract Substance use disorder remains a major challenge, with an enduring need to identify and evaluate new, translational targets for effective treatment. Here, we report the upregulation of Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) expression by roxadustat (Rox), a drug developed for renal anemia that inhibits HIF prolyl hydroxylase to prevent degradation of HIF-1α, administered either systemically or locally into selected brain regions, suppressed morphine (Mor)-induced conditioned place preference (CPP). A similar effect was observed with methamphetamine (METH). Moreover, Rox also inhibited the expression of both established and reinstated Mor-CPP and promoted the extinction of Mor-CPP. Additionally, the elevation of HIF-1α enhanced hepcidin/ferroportin 1 (FPN1)-mediated iron efflux and resulted in cellular iron deficiency, which led to the functional accumulation of the dopamine transporter (DAT) in plasma membranes due to iron deficiency-impaired ubiquitin degradation. Notably, iron-deficient mice generated via a low iron diet mimicked the effect of Rox on the prevention of Mor- or METH-CPP formation, without affecting other types of memory. These data reveal a novel mechanism for HIF-1α and iron involvement in substance use disorder, which may represent a potential novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of drug abuse. The findings also repurpose Rox by suggesting a potential new indication for the treatment of substance use disorder.

Abstract Solar hydrogen production through water splitting is the most important and promising approach to obtaining green hydrogen energy. Although this technology developed rapidly in the last two decades, it is still a long way from true commercialization. In particular, the efficiency and scalability of solar hydrogen production have attracted extensive attention in the field of basic research. Currently, the three most studied routes for solar hydrogen production include photocatalytic (PC), photoelectrochemical (PEC), and photovoltaic-electrochemical (PV-EC) water splitting. In this review, we briefly introduce the motivation of developing green hydrogen energy, and then summarize the influential breakthroughs on efficiency and scalability for solar hydrogen production, especially those cases that are instructive to practical applications. Finally, we analyze the challenges facing the industrialization of hydrogen production from solar water splitting and provide insights for accelerating the transition from basic research to practical applications. Overall, this review can provide a meaningful reference for addressing the issues of efficiency improvement and scale expansion of solar hydrogen production, thereby promoting the innovation and growth of renewable hydrogen energy industry. ABSTRACTThis study aimed to determine the integrated freshness index (IFI) of eggs using Vis-NIR spectroscopy and optimized support vector regression, which gave the first insight into the freshness quality of eggs from the biochemical essence of quality changes. In this work, Vis-NIR transmission spectra of brown-shell and pink-shell egg samples were analyzed between 500 nm and 900 nm. Standard normal variables (SNV) were used to normalize the spectral data, and the Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA) and Competitive Adaptive Reweighted Sampling (CARS) were used to choose the optimal wavelengths. The quantitative analysis model of IFI was developed using a support vector regression (SVR) that was optimized using Grid Search (GS), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). After conducting a comparative analysis, it was determined that the GA-SVR model based on 63 wavelengths screened by the SFLA best predicted IFI with a training set coefficient of determination (Rc2) of 0.900, root means square error (RMSEC) of 0.005, a prediction set coefficient of determination (Rp2) of 0.816, root mean square error (RMSEP) of 0.012 and relative analysis error (RPD) of 2.077. The results demonstrate that the model can be used to simultaneously perform nondestructive detection of two distinct egg IFI variants, suggesting broader applicability and enhanced model reliability.

The Guodian Fe deposit is representative of the newly discovered Qihe–Yucheng high-grade Fe skarn ore cluster, Luxi Block, eastern North China Craton (NCC). The age of the Pandian Fe deposit remains elusive, which hinders the understanding of its metallogenic tectonic background. Phlogopites are recognized in syn-ore stages, and they are closely associated with magnetite in the Guodian skarn Fe deposit. Here, we carried out 40Ar/39Ar dating of phlogopite, which can place a tight constraint on the timing of Guodian iron mineralization and shed light on the geodynamic framework under which the Guodian Fe deposit formed. Ore-related phlogopite 40Ar/39Ar dating yielded 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages of 131.6 ± 1.7 Ma at 890–1400 °C, with the corresponding isochron age being 131.1 ± 2.6 Ma. These two ages are consistent within the error, indicating that they can represent the formation age of the Guodian iron deposit. The mineralization age overlaps the zircon U-Pb age of 124.4 Ma for ore-related Pandian pluton. This age consistency confirms that the iron skarn mineralization is temporally and likely genetically related to Pandian diorite. The present results, coupled with existing isotopic age data, indicate the Guodian skarn Fe deposit formed contemporaneously with large-scale skarn iron mineralization over the Luxi Block in the Late Mesozoic. The available data demonstrated that the eastern NCC was “destructed” in the Late Mesozoic, as marked by voluminous igneous rocks, faulted-basin formation, high crustal heat flow, and widespread metamorphic core complexes in the eastern part of the NCC. It is thus suggested that the Guodian Fe skarn deposits, together with other deposits of similar ages in the Luxi Block and even in the eastern NCC, were products of this craton destruction. Lithospheric extension and extensive magmatism related to the craton destruction may have provided sufficient heat energy, fluid, chlorine, and Fe for the formation of the Fe deposit.

Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.3 Ga) magmatism in the North China Craton (NCC) was dominated by mafic intrusions (dolerite sills) with lesser amounts of granitic magmatism, but our lack of knowledge of this magmatism hinders our understanding of the evolution of the NCC during this period. This study investigated porphyritic granites from the Huade–Kangbao area on the northern margin of the NCC. Zircon dating indicates the porphyritic granites were intruded during the Mesoproterozoic between 1285.4 ± 2.6 and 1278.6 ± 6.1 Ma. The granites have high silica contents (SiO2 = 63.10–73.73 wt.%), exhibit alkali enrichment (total alkalis = 7.71–8.79 wt.%), are peraluminous, and can be classified as weakly peraluminous A2-type granites. The granites have negative Eu anomalies (δEu = 0.14–0.44), enrichments in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs; e.g., K, Rb, Th, and U), and depletions in high-field-strength elements (HFSEs; e.g., Nb, Ta, and Ti). εHf(t) values range from –6.43 to +2.41, with tDM2 ages of 1905–2462 Ma, suggesting the magmas were derived by partial melting of ancient crustal material. The geochronological and geochemical data, and regional geological features, indicate the Mesoproterozoic porphyritic granites from the northern margin of the NCC formed in an intraplate tectonic setting during continental extension and rifting, which represents the response of the NCC to the break-up of the Columbia supercontinent.

High-alumina (HA) mare basalts play a critical role in lunar mantle differentiation. Although remote sensing methods have speculated their potential presence regions based on sample FeO and TiO2 compositions, the location and distribution characteristics of HA basalts have not been provided. In this study, the compositions of exposed rocks in Mare Imbrium were determined using Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Diviner oxides and Lunar Prospector Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (LP-GRS) Thorium (Th) products. The exposed HA basalts were identified based on laboratory lithology classification criteria and Al2O3 abundance. The HA basalt units were mapped based on lunar topographic data, and their morphological geological characteristics were calculated based on elevation data. The results show that there are 8406 HA basalt pixels and 17 original units formed by volcanic eruptions in Mare Imbrium. The statistics of their morphology characteristics show that the HA basalts are widely distributed in the northern part of Mare Imbrium, and their compositions have a large range of variation. These units have different area and volume, and the layers formed were discontinuous. The characteristic analysis shows that the aluminum-bearing volcanic activities in Mare Imbrium were irregular. The eruptions of four different source regions occurred in three phases, and the scale and extent of the eruptions were different. The results in this study provide reliable evidence for the heterogeneity of the lunar mantle and contribute valuable information to the formation process of early lunar mantle materials.

Due to the high photosensitivity, quantum dots (QDs) offer promise in establishing heterojunctions to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation process and enhance the solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency. However, apart from their catalytic capacity, additional protection strategies should be considered to eliminate the destruction of QDs from electrolytes and photo-corrosion. Here, we present a facile strategy to fabricate heterojunction by employing graphitic carbon nitride QDs (g-C3N4 QDs) coupled with BiVO4, referred to CNQDs/BiVO4. With the help of CNQDs, a gradient energy band alignment has been established in CNQDs/BiVO4, leading to facilitated hole migration driven by an upward force. The optimal CNQDs/BiVO4 sample shows significantly enhanced PEC performance for water oxidation, with a photocurrent of 2.2 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode), which is about 2.26 times better than that of BiVO4 (0.97 mA/cm2). The enhanced PEC performance could be attributed to the increased surface-active area and facilitated surface oxidation kinetics.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Chinese herbal mixtures (CHMs) on productive performance, egg quality, immune status, anti-apoptosis ability, caecal microbiota, and offspring meconial microbiota in hens. A total of 168 thirty-week-old Wenchang breeder hens were randomly divided into two groups, with each group comprising six replicate pens of fourteen hens. The groups were fed a basal diet (CON group) and a basal diet with 1,000 mg/kg CHMs (CHMs group) for 10 weeks. In order to better develop and utilize curcuminoids, a method with high selectivity and simple and rapid separation and enrichment of curcuminoids from turmeric should be established. In this study, hydrated ceria and ceria were first prepared, and then curcumin was used as a model compound to investigate the adsorption and separation performance of the obtained adsorbed materials. Finally, ceria obtained at the calcination temperature of 400 °C were selected as the best adsorbent, and the curcuminoids in turmeric were effectively separated and enriched. This method not only has mild synthetic conditions and simple methods for adsorption materials, but also has low organic solvent consumption, simple operation and good selectivity in the separation and enrichment process, which provides a good enrichment method and research basis for the further study of curcuminoids.

It is recognized that collagen peptides can promote osteoblast mineralization; however, the responsible peptides are not clearly identified. To this end, the peptides obtained from bovine bone collagen hydrolysates with stimulatory effects on osteoblast mineralization were fractionated using a series of chromatographic methods. Six peptides from the fraction possessing the most powerful mineralization stimulation ability were identified via LC-MS-MS analysis. Six peptides exhibited enhanced bioactivity-inducing properties. Moreover, it was found that the interaction between peptides and integrinα5β1 may be responsible for osteoblast mineralization stimulation activity.

Under certain circumstances, a high-speed railway may require constant acceleration or emergency braking, in which case the inverter may experience short-term overload conditions and the current passing through the IGBT will go beyond the rated design tolerance. Under overload conditions, the IGBT loss will increase instantly, raising the power semiconductor device’s junction temperature in the process. This research examines the boosting-gate-voltage-driven IGBT control technology. It increases the gate drive voltage and the IGBT current capacity and decreases the conduction voltage drop of IGBT under short-term overload conditions, reducing the instantaneous loss and temperature rise undulation of IGBT. The working characteristics of IGBT devices are studied, and the influence of gate drive voltage on device loss and temperature rise fluctuations is analyzed. Based on the emergency acceleration and brake conditions of the actual train operation, the short-term overload characteristics of the inverter are analyzed. The optimization analysis of the boosting gate voltage under emergency conditions is carried out, and the IGBT drive circuit with gate voltage pumping function is designed. The effectiveness of the driving circuit is verified through PSpice simulation and actual switching characteristic test. According to the analysis of experimental data, it can be verified that increasing the gate voltage technology can reduce IGBT losses.

Eddy current testing (ECT) is commonly used for the detection of defects inside metallic materials. In order to achieve the effective testing of CFRP materials, increasing the operating frequency or improving the coil structure is a common method used by researchers. Higher or wider operating frequencies make the design of the ADC’s conditioning circuit complex and difficult to miniaturize. In this paper, an LC resonator based on inductance-to-digital converters (LDCs) is designed to easily detect the resonant frequency response to the state of the material under test. The reasonableness of the coil design is proven by simulation. The high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and detection sensitivity of the LC resonator are demonstrated through comparison experiments involving multiple probes. The anti-interference capability of the LC resonator in CFRP defect detection is demonstrated through various interference experiments.

The functional adaptation and underlying molecular mechanisms of hemoglobins (Hbs) have primarily concentrated on mammals and birds, with few reports on reptiles. This study aimed to investigate the convergent and species-specific high-altitude adaptation mechanisms of Hbs in two Eremias lizards from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Hbs of high-altitude E. argus and E. multiocellata were characterized by significantly high overall and intrinsic Hb-O2 affinity compared to their low-altitude populations. Despite the similarly low Cl− sensitivities, the Hbs of high-altitude E. argus exhibited higher ATP sensitivity and ATP-dependent Bohr effects than that of E. multiocellata, which could facilitate O2 unloading in respiring tissues. Eremias lizards Hbs exhibited similarly low temperature sensitivities and relatively high Bohr effects at lower temperatures, which could help to stably deliver and release O2 to cold extremities at low temperatures. The oxygenation properties of Hbs in high-altitude populations might be attributed to varying ratios of β2/β1 globin and substitutions on the β2-type globin. Notably, the Asn12Ala in lowland E. argus could cause localized destabilization of the E-helix in the tetrameric Hb by elimination of hydrogen bonds, thereby resulting in its lowest O2 affinity. This study provides a valuable reference for the high-altitude adaptation mechanisms of hemoglobins in reptiles.

Northern and southern fog events are identified over eastern China across 40 winters from 1981 to 2021. By performing composite analysis on these events, this study reveals that the formation of fog events is controlled by both dynamic and thermodynamic processes. The fog events were induced by Rossby wave trains over the Eurasian continent, leading to the development of surface wind and pressure anomalies, which favor the formation of fog events. The Rossby wave trains in northern and southern fog events are characterized by their occurrence in northern and southern locations, respectively, with different strengths. The water vapor fluxes that contribute to the enhancement of the northern fog events originate from the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, whereas the southern fog events are characterized by water vapor from the East China Sea and the South China Sea. In both northern and southern fog events, dew point depression and positive A and K index anomalies are found in northern and southern regions of eastern China, which are indicative of supersaturated air and the unstable atmospheric saturation from the low to the middle troposphere, thus providing favorable conditions for the establishment of fog events in northern and southern regions of eastern China.

Abstract Structural superlubricity is a state of nearly zero friction and no wear between two contacted solid surfaces. However, such state has a certain probability of failure due to the edge defects of graphite flake. Here, we achieve robust structural superlubricity state between microscale graphite flakes and nanostructured silicon surfaces under ambient condition. We find that the friction is always less than 1 μN, the differential friction coefficient is on the order of 10 −4 , without observable wear. This is attributed to the edge warping of graphite flake on the nanostructured surface under concentrated force, which eliminate the edge interaction between the graphite flake and the substrate. This study not only challenges the traditional understanding in tribology and structural superlubricity that rougher surfaces lead to higher friction and lead to wear, thereby reducing roughness requirements, but also demonstrates that a graphite flake with a single crystal surface that does not come into edge contact with the substrate can consistently achieve robust structural superlubricity state with any non-van der Waals material in atmospheric conditions. Additionally, the study provides a general surface modification method that enables the widespread application of structural superlubricity technology in atmospheric environments.

Abstract Heat stress, which is caused by global warming, threatens crops yield and quality across the world. As a kind of post-translation modification, SUMOylation involves in plants heat stress response with a rapid and wide pattern. Here, we identified small ubiquitin modifiers (SUMO), which affect drought tolerance in apple, also participated in thermotolerance. Six isoforms of SUMOs located on six chromosomes in apple genome, and all the SUMOs were up-regulated in response to heat stress condition. The MdSUMO2 RNAi transgenic apple plants exhibited higher survival rate, lower ion leakage, higher catalase (CAT) activity, and Malondialdehyde (MDA) content under heat stress. MdDREB2A, the substrate of MdSUMO2 in apple, was accumulated in MdSUMO2 RNAi transgenic plants than the wild type GL-3 at the protein level in response to heat stress treatment. Further, the inhibited SUMOylation level of MdDREB2A in MdSUMO2 RNAi plants might repress its ubiquitination, too. The accumulated MdDREB2A in MdSUMO2 RNAi plants further induced heat-responsive genes expression to strengthen plants thermotolerance, including MdHSFA3, MdHSP26.5, MdHSP18.2, MdHSP70, MdCYP18-1 and MdTLP1. In summary, these findings illustrate that interfering small ubiquitin modifiers (SUMO) in apple improves plants thermotolerance, partly by facilitating the stability and activity of MdDREB2A.

Abstract The transport of fluid and ions across nanotubes or nanochannels has attracted great attention due to the ultrahigh energy power density and slip length, with applications in water purification, desalination, energy conversion and even ion-based neuromorphic computing. Investigation on individual nanotube or nanochannel is essential in revealing the fundamental mechanism as well as demonstrating the property unambiguously. Surprisingly, while carbon nanotube is the pioneering and one of the most attractive systems for nanofluidics, study on its response and performance under osmotic forcing is lacking. Here, we measure the osmotic energy conversion for individual double-walled carbon nanotube with an inner radius of 2.3 nm. By fabricating a nanofluidic device using photolithography, we find a giant power density (up to 22.5 kW/m2) for the transport of KCl, NaCl, and LiCl solutions across the tube. Further experiments show that such an extraordinary performance originates from the ultrahigh slip lengths (up to a few micrometers). Our results suggest that carbon nanotube is a good candidate for not only ultrafast transport, but also osmotic power harvesting under salinity gradients.

Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), a housekeeping enzyme in primary metabolism, has been extensively studied as a model of acid-base catalysis and a clinic drug target. Herein, we investigated the enzymology of a DHFR-like protein SacH in safracin (SAC) biosynthesis, which reductively inactivates hemiaminal pharmacophore-containing biosynthetic intermediates and antibiotics for self-resistance. Furthermore, based on the crystal structure of SacH−NADPH−SAC-A ternary complexes and mutagenesis, we proposed a catalytic mechanism that is distinct from the previously characterized short-chain dehydrogenases/reductases-mediated inactivation of hemiaminal pharmacophore. These findings expand the functions of DHFR family proteins, reveal that the common reaction can be catalyzed by distinct family of enzymes, and imply the possibility for the discovery of novel antibiotics with hemiaminal pharmacophore.

The genera Parabramis and Megalobrama are important freshwater aquaculture economic fish, and the excavation and utilization of excellent germplasm resources are pivotal in ensuring the supply of high-quality aquatic protein in China. However, as a consequence of fast domestication, overfishing and water pollution, the germplasm resources of Parabramis and Megalobrama are under threat of recession. These germplasm resources serve as an indispensable material basis for the healthy and sustainable development of the Parabramis and Megalobrama breeding industries. It is of great strategic significance to systematically collect, preserve, identify, evaluate, protect and utilize Parabramis and Megalobrama germplasm resources. This paper reviews the major results of studies on the morphology, cytogenetics, and molecular population genetics of the genera Parabramis and Megalobrama, the progress in their genetic improvement through hybridization, selective breeding and gynogenesis techniques, and the current protection measures for Parabramis and Megalobrama germplasm resources. Then, some suggestions for the protection of these germplasm resources and improved variety creation are provided. It is expected to offer basic resources for the sustainable development of the Parabramis and Megalobrama seed industries.

Abstract Background Kidney ischemia–reperfusion injury is inevitable in kidney transplantation, and is essential for primary graft dysfunction and delayed graft function. Our previous study has proved that miR-92a could ameliorate kidney ischemia–reperfusion injury, but the mechanism has not been studied. Methods This study conducted further research on the role of miR-92a in kidney ischemia–reperfusion injury and organ preservation. In vivo, mice models of bilateral kidney ischemia (30 min), cold preservation after ischemia (cold preservation time of 6, 12, and 24 h), and ischemia–reperfusion (reperfusion time of 24, 48, and 72 h) were established. Before or after modeling, the model mice were injected with miR-92a-agomir through the caudal vein. In vitro, the hypoxia–reoxygenation of HK-2 cells was used to simulate ischemia–reperfusion injury. Results Kidney ischemia and ischemia–reperfusion significantly damaged kidney function, decreased the expression of miR-92a, and increased apoptosis and autophagy in kidneys. miR-92a agomir tail vein injection significantly increased the expression of miR-92a in kidneys, improved kidney function, and alleviated kidney injury, and the intervention before modeling achieved a better effect than after. Moreover, miR-92a agomir significantly reduced the apoptosis and autophagy in HK-2 cells induced by hypoxia, hypoxia–reoxygenation, and rapamycin, while miR-92a antagomir had opposite effects. Furthermore, mitogen-activated protein kinase, c-Jun NH (2) terminal kinase, caspase 3, Beclin 1, and microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3B were inhibited by overexpression of miR-92a both in vivo and in vitro, which in turn reduced apoptosis and autophagy. Conclusions Our results prove that overexpression of miR-92a attenuated kidney ischemia–reperfusion injury and improved kidney preservation, and intervention before ischemia–reperfusion provides better protection than after.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) transplantation is a promising approach for pulmonary fibrosis (PF), however it is impeded by several persistent challenges, including the lack of long-term tracking, low retention, and poor survival of MSCs, as well as the low labeling efficiency of nanoprobes. Herein, a cobalt protoporphyrin IX (CoPP) aggregation-induced strategy is applied to develop a multifunctional nano-self-assembly (ASCP) by combining gold nanoparticle (AuNPs), superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), and CoPP through a facile solvent evaporation-driven approach. Since no additional carrier materials are employed during the synthesis, high loading efficiency of active ingredients and excellent biocompatibility are achieved. Additionally, facile modification of the ASCPs with bicyclo[6.1.0]nonyne (BCN) groups (named as ASCP-BCN) enables them to effectively label MSCs through bioorthogonal chemistry. The obtained ASCP-BCN could not only help to track MSCs with AuNP-based computed tomography (CT) imaging, but also achieve an SPIONs-assisted magnetic field based improvement in the MSCs retention in lungs as well as promoted the survival of MSCs via the sustained release of CoPP. The in vivo results demonstrated that the labeled MSCs improved the lung functions and alleviated the fibrosis symptoms in a bleomycin–induced PF mouse model. Collectively, a novel ASCP-BCN multifunctional nanoagent was developed to bioorthogonally-label MSCs with a high efficiency, presenting a promising potential in the high-efficient MSC therapy for PF.

Rapid charge recombination has limited the application of black phosphorus (BP) as a visible light‐responsive photocatalyst. Violet phosphorus (VP), another 2D phosphorus allotrope, has drawn extensive attention for its excellent semiconductor property. However, its photocatalytic activity for hydrogen (H2) evolution is yet to be studied. Herein, a VP/BP heterostructure using a phase engineering strategy is constructed, wherein few‐layered VP is interlaced with BP to create a well‐matched heterophase interface by virtue of their identical chemical compositions and different crystal phases. Experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that VP and BP exhibit strong interaction at the heterophase interface, which is found effective in accelerating photogenerated electron transfer from BP to VP for improved charge separation efficiency. After being decorated with a Rh cocatalyst, the VP/BP heterostructure with utilization of visible light up to 700 nm shows ≈3‐ and 210‐times greater photocatalytic H2 evolution activity with respect to its counterparts. This study highlights feasibility of phase engineering and provides an alternative strategy in promoting charge separation as well as performance of photocatalyst.

The official media are the mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, the government and the people, having an authoritative status and special influence that is beyond compare by unofficial media. Whereas many official media are now in a difficult situation, with their influence and people's trust in them being lower than that of unofficial media, some have figured out a path to success and have emerged as “model students” over time. This qualitative comparative analysis of 60 cases of official media aims at exploring the multi-causes path and realization mechanism of these “model students”. The results show that there are five parallel multi-causes paths for official media to become “model students”. From the perspective of these paths, the realization mechanism for official media to become “model students” is as follows: the governments adhere to the principle of “serving the people”, bring people a sense of political efficacy, effectively expands their information channels, ensure the substantiality, objectivity and authenticity of their information, and adopt the communication strategy of empathy, so as to gain credibility and social influence. Meanwhile, a higher administrative level of government departments/state-owned enterprises to which official media belong has no significant correlation with official media’ becoming “model students''.

In recent years, in order to achieve the goal of “carbon peaking and carbon neutralization”, many countries have focused on the development of clean energy, and the prediction of photovoltaic power generation has become a hot research topic. However, many traditional methods only use meteorological factors such as temperature and irradiance as the features of photovoltaic power generation, and they rarely consider the multi-features fusion methods for power prediction. This paper first preprocesses abnormal data points and missing values in the data from 18 power stations in Northwest China, and then carries out correlation analysis to screen out 8 meteorological features as the most relevant to power generation. Next, the historical generating power and 8 meteorological features are fused in different ways to construct three types of experimental datasets. Finally, traditional time series prediction methods, such as Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), Convolution Neural Network (CNN) combined with eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), are applied to study the impact of different feature fusion methods on power prediction. The results show that the prediction accuracy of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), stacked Long Short-Term Memory (stacked LSTM), Bi-directional LSTM (Bi-LSTM), Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN), and XGBoost algorithms can be greatly improved by the method of integrating historical generation power and meteorological features. Therefore, the feature fusion based photovoltaic power prediction method proposed in this paper is of great significance to the development of the photovoltaic power generation industry.

Despite the progress made to improve therapeutic outcomes for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), many unmet clinical needs remain to be resolved. Unlike existing anti-AML strategies, here we developed a biomimetic nanocomposite to efficiently eliminate the leukemia cells in the bone marrow and prevent the homing of AML. To fulfill our design, the ultra-small nanozyme was conjugated onto the surface of an oxygen-carrying nanoparticle, which was further coated with bone marrow stromal cell membrane. After entering the blood, this biomimetic nanocomposite got actively internalized by the leukemia cells in the blood and released the loaded chemotherapeutics and nanozyme inside the leukemia cells to achieve a synergistic antitumor efficacy. Meanwhile, the adhesive properties of the stromal cell membrane enabled the nanocomposite to home to the bone marrow, where the nanocomposite effectively killed the retained leukemia cells. More importantly, the biomimetic cell membrane also acted as a CXCR4 antagonism to block the CXCR4/CXCL12-mediated homing of leukemia cells to the bone marrow and infiltration to other organs like the liver and spleen. In conclusion, this proof-of-concept study demonstrated that our designed platform effectively kills leukemia cells while preventing their infiltration, thus providing a promising prospect for resolving the clinical challenges in current AML treatment.

In recent years, the utilization of phosphorus-enriched biochar (PBC) has attracted significant attention due to its exceptional stability and surface reactivity. This review systematically summarizes the advancements in research related to the application of PBC as an adsorbent for remediating water contaminated with heavy metals. Initially, the precursors utilized in the production of PBC, encompassing biomass and phosphorus sources, are introduced. Subsequently, the distinct physicochemical properties and adsorption characteristics resulting from phosphorus doping on the biochar surface through various carbonization processes and parameters are elucidated. Additionally, the diverse adsorption mechanisms employed by PBC in removing heavy metals from water are analyzed. Lastly, future research prospects and associated challenges concerning PBC are presented. This paper aims to furnish comprehensive background information for the practical implementation of PBC in the purification of heavy metal-contaminated water environments.

Agricultural mechanization is crucial in enhancing production efficiency, alleviating labor demands, reducing costs, improving agricultural product quality, and promoting sustainable development. However, wear and tear are inevitable when using agricultural machinery. The failure of critical wear-resistant parts is responsible for over 50% of rural machinery breakdowns. For instance, a domestic combine harvester typically only operates trouble-free for 20 to 30 h, and the service life of a rotary plow knife is approximately 80 h. Investigating the wear performance of key farm machinery components reinforces machinery design and maintenance strategies, extends machinery lifespans, enhances agricultural production efficiency, and advances agrarian sustainability. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research on the wear resistance of crucial agricultural machinery components. It delves into the factors influencing the wear resistance of these components and explores current effective measures to address wear-related issues. Additionally, it also summarizes the challenges and opportunities in researching the wear performance of key components in agricultural machinery and future development directions.

In the past tens of years, the power conversion efficiency of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) has continuously improved and been one of the fastest growing photovoltaic technologies that can also help us achieve the goal of carbon emissions reduction. Among several key advances, the alkali element post-deposition treatment (AlK PDT) is regarded as the most important finding in the last 10 years, which has led to the improvement of CIGS solar cell efficiency from 20.4% to 23.35%. A profound understanding of the influence of alkali element on the chemical and electrical properties of the CIGS absorber along with the underlying mechanisms is of great importance. In this review, we summarize the strategies of the alkali element doping in CIGS solar cell, the problems to be noted in the PDT process, the effects on the CdS buffer layer, the effects of different alkali elements on the structure and morphology of the CIGS absorber layer, and retrospect the progress in the CIGS solar cell with emphasis on the alkali element post deposition treatment.

The plant microbiota can affect plant health and fitness by promoting methylmercury (MeHg) production in paddy soil. Although most well-known mercury (Hg) methylators are observed in the soil, it remains unclear how rice rhizosphere assemblages alter MeHg production. Here, we used network analyses of microbial diversity to identify bulk soil (BS), rhizosphere (RS) and root bacterial networks during rice development at Hg gradients. Hg gradients greatly impacted the niche-sharing of taxa significantly relating to MeHg/THg, while plant development had little effect. In RS networks, Hg gradients increased the proportion of MeHg-related nodes in total nodes from 37.88% to 45.76%, but plant development enhanced from 48.59% to 50.41%. The module hub and connector in RS networks included taxa positively (Nitrososphaeracea, Vicinamibacteraceae and Oxalobacteraceae) and negatively (Gracilibacteraceae) correlating with MeHg/THg at the blooming stage. In BS networks, Deinococcaceae and Paludibacteraceae were positively related to MeHg/THg, and constituted the connector at the reviving stage and the module hub at the blooming stage. Soil with an Hg concentration of 30 mg kg−1 increased the complexity and connectivity of root microbial networks, although microbial community structure in roots was less affected by Hg gradients and plant development. As most frequent connector in root microbial networks, Desulfovibrionaceae did not significantly correlate with MeHg/THg, but was likely to play an important role in the response to Hg stress.

The Baiyun sag of the Pearl River Mouth Basin has become a focus for deepwater exploration with the highest hydrocarbon potential in northern South China Sea. The Eocene organic-rich mudstones are the main source rocks in the Baiyun sag, and the evolution of their depositional environment remains unclear. Based on the core and geochemical data, we investigated the depositional environments of the Eocene Wenchang and Enping sediments in the Baiyuan sag and revealed the sedimentary environment influences on the formation of the source rocks in the study area. The results indicate that the sediments of the Wenchang and Enping formations were deposited in dysoxic to oxic environments. Moreover, according to the concentrations of salinity-sensitive trace elements, and δ13C (-10.9‰ to -7.2‰, average -8.58‰) and δ18O (-18.4‰ to -14.5‰, average -17.1‰) values of carbonate cement in the sandstone samples, the Wenchang and Enping formations were in fresh water to brackish water conditions during their deposition, with increasing salinity from bottom to top, which suggests that the two formations were mainly deposited in lacustrine environment and the Enping formation experienced a relatively extensive lake transgression. The vertical variations of geochemical characteristics suggest that the Wenchang and Enping formations were deposited under a semi-arid/warm condition and all Eocene sediments experienced mild to moderate chemical weathering, relatively large detrital input and stable paleowater depth. Both primary productivity and preservation conditions played essential roles in controlling the enrichment of organic matters in the Baiyun sag, and the preservation conditions resulted from the restricted water setting. The present work provide a comprehensive analysis of depositional environments based on the abundance of high-resolution geochemical data. The results obtained reveal the dominated factors controlling organic matter enrichment in the Baiyun Sag of the Pearl River Mouth Basin. Those findings are not only significant for understanding the region’s paleogeography, but also provide guidance for future profitable oil and gas exploration in the northern South China Sea and other similar areas.
