The National Economic Association was founded as the Caucus of Black Economists in 1969. The organization was formed to address the underrepresentation of Black economists in the American Economic Association and in the profession at large. This article reviews key issues raised and how they were addressed. It also makes suggestions for future directions the NEA might take. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Due to its simplicity, the plurality voting system is frequently used to choose a common representative or project. Nevertheless, it may fail to provide a socially efficient decision as the majority can outvote any minority, even if the majority''s gain does not compensate the loss suffered by the minority. In this paper, we propose and study a voting mechanism that allows voters to reveal more information about their preferences than the plurality voting system. In the standardized bids mechanism voters report a bid for all available projects that are standardized before being aggregated to choose the winning project. The standardization of bids ensures the existence of an equilibrium, and delivers incentives to overcome the problem of positive and negative exaggeration. Our experimental results show that the standardized bids mechanism performs well in the laboratory as it chooses the efficient project in almost 70% of the cases, and induces truthful reports of project rankings in approximately 90% of the cases. It also reduces the tension between the majority and the minority. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article discusses the report of the Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession (CSMGEP), which was established by the American Economic Association in the early 1970s to oversee a program that would increase the amount of minority group representations in the economics profession and to also monitor the profession's racial and ethnic diversity. The report offers data on the numbers and proportions of minorities studying economics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Results from a survey of minority faculty in economics departments are also given. Information on the three components of the Pipeline Program that CSMGEP oversees which include the Summer Program, the Mentoring Program, and the Summer Fellows Program is presented.

Efforts by public and private institutions to increase the number of minorities participating in graduate economics programs has contributed to a growing supply of Ph. D. trained minority economists. However, minorities are still under-represented as faculty members in economics departments. The article presents an analysis of minority groups in the field of economics. Data provided by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation on bachelor's and doctoral degrees is used in the report. African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans comprise the main minority groups in the study. Tables are presented on minority economics students from 1993-2002 and report similar rates from start to finish. The number of tenured faculty members are tracked by race and ethnicity. Efforts by the American Economic Association to increase minority participation in the economics profession is summarized.

This article presents the 2009 report of the American Economic Association (AEA) Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession (CSMGEP) and for several of the programs that it administers for the AEA. The article notes that Ngina Chiteji was appointed to replace Cecilia Rouse as chair of the committee. The article also mentions changes that took place in the Summer Economics Fellows Program, the Mentoring Program, and the Summer Training Program. Other committee activities in which the CSMGEP is involved are also reported.
