The mean activity of surface Mn sites at LaxCa1-xMnO3 nanostructures towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline solution is assessed as a function of the oxide composition. Highly active oxide nano-particles were synthesised by an ionic liquid-based route, yielding phase-pure nanoparticles, across the entire range of compositions, with sizes between 20 and 35 nm. The bulk vs. surface composition and structure are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES). These techniques allow quantification of not only changes in the mean oxidation state of Mn as a function of x, but also the extent of A-site surface segregation. Both trends manifest themselves in the electrochemical responses associated with surface Mn sites in 0.1 M KOH solution. The characteristic redox signatures of Mn sites are used to estimate their effective surface number density. This parameter allows comparing, for the first time, the mean electrocatalytic activity of surface Mn sites as a function of the LaxCa1-xMnO3 composition. The ensemble of experimental data provides a consistent picture in which increasing electron density at the Mn sites leads to an increase in the ORR activity. We also demonstrate that normalisation of electrochemical activity by mass or specific surface area may result in inaccurate structure–activity correlations.

Multiwavelength anomalous dispersion (MAD) data have been collected from a single crystal of the protein concanavalin A so as to evaluate different combinations of wavelengths for crystallographic structure determination. Data were recorded to 2.1 Å resolution on a flash frozen crystal at three wavelengths about the Mn K-edge (1.8951 Å, 1.8940 Å, 1.800 Å) using synchrotron radiation at ELETTRA's Sincrotrone Trieste 'XRD' beamline. This is one of the longest wavelength K-edge MAD studies undertaken to date. Anomalous and dispersive Patterson maps are seen to be of high quality and indicate a high occupancy for the manganese binding site. This is confirmed also in the MAD phase determination and electron density maps. Finally 0.92 Å data recorded at CHESS indicates the prospects available for combined phasing strategies based on MAD to medium/high resolution along with ultra high resolution data.

High-resolution x-ray absorption measurements reveal a rare-earth-dependent splitting of the Ni K edge in the insulating, charge-disproportionated state of the whole RNiO3 perovskite family. The splitting is five times larger for LuNiO3 [2.5(1) eV] than for PrNiO3 [0.5(3) eV], suggesting that the charge transfer between Ni3+delta and Ni3-delta decreases by approaching the itinerant limit and is larger for the heavier lanthanides than suggested in previous studies. The spectroscopic signature of the two Ni sites remains visible above the metal-insulator transition, in agreement with the persistence of dynamic Ni3+delta/Ni3-delta charge fluctuations in the metallic phase. This last result generalizes the occurrence of charge disproportionation as alternative to Jahn-Teller distortions to the dynamic regime, giving further support to recent theoretical work [I. I.
