Abstract

Cephalopod fisheries are increasing, but little is known about the cryptic diversity of some key commercial species. Recent studies have shown that cryptic speciation is common in cephalopods, including several oceanic squids formerly considered ‘cosmopolitan species.’ Further efforts are needed to investigate the cryptic diversity of commercial species, to inform management and support sustainable fisheries practices. Thysanoteuthis rhombus is an oceanic squid, currently recognized as the single species of the family Thysanoteuthidae. Thysanoteuthis. rhombus has a global distribution in tropical and subtropical waters and is an economically important species, with the highest catches occurring off Okinawa in Japan and of potential fishery resource for other countries due to its high abundance and large size. Here, we used sequences from 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, and cytochrome c oxidase I to characterize its cryptic diversity using samples collected throughout most of its known geographic range. We identified three different putative species whose distributions are concordant with main ocean basins: Thysanoteuthis major, the most abundant species, is widely distributed in the North Pacific Ocean, North Indian Ocean, and limits of the South Atlantic Ocean; Thysanoteuthis rhombus is distributed in the North and South Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea; and Thysanoteuthis cf. filiferum, likely the least sampled to date, is found in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. A sister relationship was observed between T. rhombus and T. major, and T. cf. filiferum was found to be the most divergent species. Based on our divergence estimation, we hypothesize that the closure of the Isthmus of Panama during the early Pliocene played a significant role in the split of T. rhombus and T. major, while the split of their ancestor from T. cf. filiferum coincided with an increase in the Pacific Walker Circulation and the longitudinal gradient of surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean during

Abstract

Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis is known for its complex population structure with three major transoceanic forms (viz. middle‐sized, dwarf, and giant forms) whose taxonomic status has been disputed for decades. This integrated taxonomic study examines these prevenient morphotypes gathered on cruises in the Indian Ocean to ascertain their status in the evolutionary history of the species. Molecular analyses employing mitochondrial (COI, ND2) and nuclear (H3) markers revealed four genetically distinct and novel lineages of the species in the Indian Ocean, representing three morphotypes from the Arabian Sea and one from the Southern Indian Ocean. The mitochondrial‐based phylograms revealed two distinct clades in the species: "dwarf forms + giant form" and "middle‐sized forms," which further branch into geographically structured evolutionary units. Species delimitation analyses recovered five distinct clades, namely, the Arabian Sea giant and dwarf forms, Equatorial, Eastern Typical, and Other Middle‐sized forms, representing the consensus molecular operational taxonomic units. H3 being heterozygous could not resolve the phylogeny. Haplotype network and AMOVA analysis of mtDNA genes indicated explicit phylogeographic structuring of haplotypes, whereas these outputs and PCA results were incongruent with the morphological grouping. Phenetic features distinguishing the morphotypes were sometimes plastic and mismatched with the genotypes. The giant form was genetically close to the dwarf forms, contradicting the earlier notion that it descended from the middle‐sized form. It may be assumed that the dwarf form evolved following sympatric speciation and adaptation to warm equatorial waters, while the focal features of the Western Arabian Sea guide toward allopatric speciation of the giant form. Abstract

The occurrence of the Japanese hooked squid Onykia loennbergiiin the Arabian Sea is reported here based on reexamination of a previously collected and misidentified specimen in the course of research on oceanic cephalopods from the Arabian Sea. The individual’s dorsal mantle length (DML) measured 325 mm and it weighed 493 g. The individual was a mature male with a relatively long penis (165 mm) with 73 spermatophores. The current report forms the first confirmed report of the genus Onykiain the tropical Arabian Sea.

Abstract

Recent studies have shown that coastal and shelf cephalopod populations have increased globally over the last six decades. Although cephalopod landings are dominated by the squid fishery, which represents nearly 80% of the worldwide cephalopod catches, octopuses and cuttlefishes represent ∼10% each. Total reported global production of octopuses over the past three decades indicates a relatively steady increase in catch, almost doubling from 179,042 t in 1980 to 355,239 t in 2014. Octopus fisheries are likely to continue to grow in importance and magnitude as many finfish stocks are either fully or over-exploited. More than twenty described octopus species are harvested from some 90 countries worldwide. Abstract

The small benthic squid Euprymna hyllebergiis reported for the first time from the southeastern Arabian Sea along the Indian coast. A total of 97 individuals (56 females and 41 males) were collected from commercial trawls. The dorsal mantle length (DML) of the individuals ranged from 21 to 46.5 mm for males and 24 to 50 mm for females. This species has previously been reported only from the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Thailand, and the Andaman Sea. Detailed morphometric, meristic, and molecular data for this species are provided. The documentation of this squid from India expands the catalogue of cephalopod fauna of the Arabian Sea, shedding new insights on its distribution patterns.

Abstract

The distribution pattern of purpleback flying squid and the relationship between its abundance and environmental variables in the south-eastern Arabian Sea were analysed using a geographical information system (GIS) and a generalised additive model (GAM). Highest abundances were observed during December and January within 10 and 13°N and 71 and 72°E around the Lakshadweep Islands. The mean abundance in the area was 4.21 tonnes/km2 and the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) was estimated as 0.63 million tonnes. GAM indicated that very high squid abundance was associated with low values of dissolved oxygen (6.01–6.27 mg/L), sea surface temperature (28.03–28.62°C), pH (7.75–8.56), salinity (30.42–34.48 psu), chlorophyll-a (0.4–0.6 mg/m3), zooplankton biomass (0.23–0.64 mL/m3), and shallow 20°C isotherm (101.2–134.7 m) and mixed layer depth (17.8–29.8 m). As a carnivore from paralarval stages, S. oualaniensis depends on secondary and tertiary production to sustain its population for which primary production is used up. In the tropical Arabian Sea where temperature differences are not so pronounced, S. oualaniensis distribution was found to be related to a low but very narrow sea surface temperature (SST) band. There is sufficient fishable biomass in the area to possibly launch a new targeted oceanic squid fishery from the western seaboard of India.

Abstract

The bathypelagic squid Bathyteuthis bacidifera was collected in an open net towed at 200 m over a bottom depth range from 1200 to 2340 m in the southern Arabian Sea, near Laccadive Archipelago (09°54′32″N; 73°39′12″E, 11°16′18″N; 72°51′09″E, and 10°48′08″N; 72°41′11″ E). Morphometric and molecular analyses are presented here. This is the first record of Bathyteuthis bacidifera from the southeastern Arabian Sea and the first description of the species at the molecular level. Specimens were collected from April 2015 to January 2016 in warmer (15.2 to 15.6 °C) and shallower (∼200 m) water than previously reported. The first observations of countable increments in the statolith of the genus Bathyteuthis are reported. The statolith microstructure of the specimens (15.6 to 39.0 mm dorsal mantle length) revealed that Bathyteuthis bacidifera is a slow growing squid, with a growth rate of 0.12 to 0.20 mm/day. The record of this rare squid from the Arabian Sea is an addition to the cephalopod fauna of India and contributes to biogeographic knowledge of this unusual deep sea family. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
