Objective: To evaluate T2-weighted BLADE tecnique for evaluating intra-abdominal organs and lesions, especially the gastrointestinal wall and pathologies, and to compare the findings with HASTE. Material and Methods: Sixty patients (mean age: 47.2 years, range 19-88) (32 males, 28 females) referred to our institution for upper abdominal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examinations with various indications between January 2015 and May 2015 were included in our study. All examinations were performed on a 1.5 Tesla MR device and no anti-peristaltic drug was administered. Images were retrospectively and independently evaluated by two radiologists. A qualitative evaluation was performed to assess images regarding the presence of artifacts and diagnostic quality, the anatomical detail of the upper abdominal organs and structures (contour sharpness, contrast of tissue, parenchyma and internal wall structure) and any present pathologies and lesions in the organs (lesion contour sharpness and size, internal structure properties, morphological characteristics). A quantitative evaluation was performed to calculate the contrast-to-muscle ratios (CMR) of the internal organs and lesions. The distribution of the variables was statistically checked by Kolmogorov Smirnov test. Paired-samples t- test was used for quantitative data. Results: BLADE was significantly associated with reduced artifacts (p Conclusion: In upper abdominal MRI examination, artifacts, especially movement artifacts, were significantly reduced by BLADE, yielding more valuable data for the evaluation of the gastrointestinal system wall structure and its pathologies, especially considering the organs near to the diaphragm and retroperitoneal organs as well as vascular structures.

Background: Gadolinium concentration variation during acquisition of contrast-enhanced MR angiography (CE-MRA) may lead to artifacts.Purpose: To compare signal intensity (SI) profiles of four different contrast agent injection strategies during CE-MRA with the goal of minimizing SI variation during acquisition.Study Type: Prospective.Subjects: Forty subjects randomized to receive one of four injection profiles of gadobenate dimeglumine (0.1 mmol/kg), either undiluted (0.5 M) or diluted to 40 ml total volume. Tested profiles: 1) nondiluted single-phase ("standard" NS; 1.6 ml/s), 2) diluted single-phase (DS; 1.6 ml/s), 3) diluted biphasic (DB; 9 ml @ 3.3 ml/s, 29 ml @ 1.4 ml/s), 4) patient-tailored protocol using linear prediction (DT).Field Strength/sequence: Time-resolved SI measured at 3T with spoiled gradient echo sequences having analogous parameters to those of CE-MRA.Assessment: Plateau arrival time, rise time, duration, peak and tail SI, plateau quality (sum of squared residuals; SSR), average SI for each injection type derived were used.Statistical Test: Two-tailed t-test.Results: Peak SI, arrival, and rise times were not significantly different between groups, excepting peak SI DB slightly > DS (P = 0.042). Duration of NS vs. the diluted groups was significantly shorter (all P < 0.0001), and DS duration was significantly shorter than that of DT and DB (NS 11.4 ± 3.5 vs. DS 22.9 ± 4.3, DB 25.4 ± 2.3, DT 28.3 ± 4.1 sec). Quality (SSR) of the 20-second plateau was significantly better for DS, DB, DT as compared with NS (all P < 0.001).Data Conclusion: Three different strategies to power-inject diluted gadobenate dimeglumine targeting a 20-second plateau produced SI profiles with longer duration, more consistent plateau, and no significant loss in peak SI. Introduction: 3D-Time-of-flight magnetic-resonance-angiography (TOF MRA) is an established method in vessel analysis. However, many artifacts that occur may lead to a false diagnosis. This retrospective study evaluates the coherence of MR artifacts to extensive pneumatized air cells surrounding the internal carotid artery (ICA) in the petrosus part of the temporal bone. Materials and methods: Patients who received 3D-TOF MRA and multidetector helical computed tomography (CT) angiography were registered from April 2012 to April 2013. Of these patients, both ICAs in the petrosus part were analyzed. Vertical maximum intensity projection (MIP) artifacts were graduated as normal, mild to moderate, and severe artifacts. The distinction of the vertical part of the pneumatized air cells was also categorized in three groups, regarding the circumference of the ICA in pneumatization ≤ 90°, between 90° and 180°, and ≥ 180°. Results: A total of 203 vessels were collected for analysis. The more extensive the pneumatized air cells were present, the more band-like artifacts and pseudostenosis at the vertical portion of the petrosus part of the ICA were registered. Conclusion: Careful examination of the source images and evaluation of the size of the pneumatized air cells with CT scan are essential to avoid false positive diagnosis in the distal petrosus part of the ICA. Medical devices are frequently encountered in patients presenting for imaging studies. Knowledge of the device composition, dwell time, and location is essential for determining the safety and potential impact on the quality of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations. Anticipation of MRI artifacts associated with implanted devices allows the radiologist to adjust parameters to mitigate their effect on the anatomy of interest and to avoid pitfalls in interpretation. The purpose of this article is to present a pictorial review of the MRI appearance of commonly encountered implanted devices and foreign objects in order to help the radiologist anticipate their impact on final image quality. Multimodal neuroimaging using EEG and fMRI provides deeper insights into brain function by improving the spatial and temporal resolution of the acquired data. However, simultaneous EEG-fMRI inevitably compromises the quality of the EEG and fMRI signals due to the high degree of interaction between the two systems. Fluctuations in the magnetic flux flowing through the participant and the EEG system, whether due to movement within the magnetic field of the scanner or to changes in magnetic field strength, induce electrical potentials in the EEG recordings that mask the much weaker electrical activity of the neuronal populations. A number of different methods have been proposed to reduce MR artifacts. We present an overview of the most commonly used methods and an evaluation of the methods using three sets of diverse EEG data. We limited the evaluation to open-access and easy-to-use methods and a reference signal regression method using a set of six carbon-wire loops (CWL), which allowed evaluation of their added value. The evaluation was performed by comparing EEG signals recorded outside the MRI scanner with artifact-corrected EEG signals recorded simultaneously with fMRI. To quantify and evaluate the quality of artifact reduction methods in terms of the spectral content of the signal, we analyzed changes in oscillatory activity during a resting-state and a finger tapping motor task. The quality of artifact reduction in the time domain was assessed using data collected during a visual stimulation task. In the study we utilized hierarchical Bayesian probabilistic modeling for statistical inference and observed significant differences between the evaluated methods in the success of artifact reduction and associated signal quality in both the frequency and time domains. In particular, the CWL system proved superior to the other methods evaluated in improving spectral contrast in the alpha and beta bands and in recovering visual evoked responses. Needle tip visualization is of high importance in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guided interventional procedures, for example for taking biopsies from suspicious lesions in the liver or kidney. The exact position of the needle tip is often obscured by image artifacts arising from the magnetic properties of the needle. The authors investigated two special biopsy needle tip designs using diamagnetic coatings. For common interventional MR sequences, the needle tip can be identified in the MR image by several equidistant dark spots arranged along a straight line. A dotted instead of a solid line allows for an improved control of the movement of the needle, not only if the needle is tilted toward the imaging plane, but also if the needle leaves an empty canal with signal extinction, which cannot be distinguished from the needle material itself. With the proposed design the position of the needle tip can be estimated with a precision of approximately 1 mm using conventional FLASH, FISP, and TSE sequences, as used for interventional MR. Furthermore, the size of the biopsy probe can be estimated from the artifact. In using needles with a properly designed tip coating, taking biopsies under MR control is beginning to be greatly simplified. The approach to design artifacts using diamagnetic material in combination with paramagnetic material paves the way toward new instruments and implants, suitably tailored to the needs of the interventional radiologist. In abdominal MR imaging, ghost artifacts from noncyclic bowel movements can reduce the quality of the images. Although pharmacologic suppression of motion is effective, no study has being conducted to analyze the influence of drug motion suppression on fast breath-hold 1.5-T examinations of the upper abdomen. A prospective, randomized, double-blind trial was conducted in 50 patients. Patients were randomly distributed into two groups: The control group received only an oral solution, whereas the other group received the oral solution plus a subcutaneous injection of 20 mg of butylscopolamine 10 min before the MR examination. Breath-hold T1-weighted gradient-recalled-echo (GRE) MR images were obtained in a 1.5-T superconductive unit. Quantitative image analysis was performed with region-of-interest (ROI) measurements of the signal intensity of the liver and in background air anterior and lateral to the patient. A qualitative analysis of the subjective quality of the T1-weighted images was also done, and the adverse reactions were registered. The groups were homogeneous regarding age, gender, and weight distribution. No significant differences in the signal intensity of the liver and in the incoherent noise measurements were found between the two groups. Gastrointestinal noise showed significant differences between groups, with lower values for the butylscopolamine group compared with the control group. There was also a statistically significant difference in the image quality between groups, and optimal studies were only found in the butylscopolamine group, where most patients had a good-quality evaluation. Regarding adverse events, there were non-significant differences between groups. In conclusion, administration of an antiperistaltic agent to reduce the movements of the gastrointestinal tract diminishes the motion artifacts generated on MR imaging of the abdomen, even at high field strength and with fast imaging sequences. Objective: To assess the impact of flip angle with gradient sequences on the "magic angle effect". We characterized the magic angle effect in various gradient echo sequences and compared the signal-to-noise ratios present on these sequences with the signal-to-noise ratios of spin echo sequences.Design: Ten normal healthy volunteers were positioned such that the flexor hallucis longus tendon remained at approximately at 55 degrees to the main magnetic field (the magic angle). The tendon was imaged by a conventional spin echo T1- and T2-weighted techniques and by a series of gradient techniques. Gradient sequences were altered by both TE and flip angle. Signal-to-noise measurements were obtained at segments of the flexor hallucis longus tendon demonstrating the magic angle effect to quantify the artifact. Signal-to-noise measurements were compared and statistical analysis performed. Similar measurements were taken of the anterior tibialis tendon as an internal control.Results and Conclusions: We demonstrated the magic angle effect on all the gradient sequences. The intensity of the artifact was affected by both the TE and flip angle. Low TE values and a high flip angle demonstrated the greatest magic angle effect.
