Abstract

In the rapidly evolving semiconductor industry, where research, design, verification, and manufacturing are intricately linked, the potential of Large Language Models to revolutionize hardware design and security verification is immense. The primary challenge, however, lies in the complexity of hardware specific issues that are not adequately addressed by the natural language or software code knowledge typically acquired during the pretraining stage. Additionally, the scarcity of datasets specific to the hardware domain poses a significant hurdle in developing a foundational model. Addressing these challenges, this paper introduces Hardware Phi 1.5B, an innovative large language model specifically tailored for the hardware domain of the semiconductor industry. We have developed a specialized, tiered dataset comprising small, medium, and large subsets and focused our efforts on pretraining using the medium dataset. This approach harnesses the compact yet efficient architecture of the Phi 1.5B model. 2. virtCCA: Virtualized Arm Confidential Compute Architecture with TrustZone

Abstract

ARM recently introduced the Confidential Compute Architecture (CCA) as part of the upcoming ARMv9-A architecture. CCA enables the support of confidential virtual machines (cVMs) within a separate world called the Realm world, providing protection from the untrusted normal world. While CCA offers a promising future for confidential computing, the widespread availability of CCA hardware is not expected in the near future, according to ARM's roadmap. To address this gap, we present virtCCA, an architecture that facilitates virtualized CCA using TrustZone, a mature hardware feature available on existing ARM platforms. Notably, virtCCA can be implemented on platforms equipped with the Secure EL2 (S-EL2) extension available from ARMv8.4 onwards, as well as on earlier platforms that lack S-EL2 support. virtCCA is fully compatible with the CCA specifications at the API level. We have developed the entire CCA software and firmware stack on top of virtCCA, including the enhancements to the normal world's KVM to support cVMs, and the TrustZone Management Monitor (TMM) that enforces isolation among cVMs and provides cVM life-cycle management. We have implemented virtCCA on real ARM servers, with and without S-EL2 support. Our evaluation, conducted on micro-benchmarks and macro-benchmarks, demonstrates that the overhead of running cVMs is acceptable compared to running normal-world VMs. Specifically, in a set of real-world workloads, the overhead of virtCCA-SEL2 is less than 29.5% for I/O intensive workloads, while virtCCA-EL3 outperforms the baseline in most cases.

Abstract

Hardware Trojan is malicious tampering to the original circuit, which has become the most important security threat of integrated circuit. In order to ensure the safety and reliability of ICs, many hardware Trojan detection methods are proposed. As one of the formal verification methods, model checking can effectively detect the hardware Trojan in the design phase. Firstly, the working principle and process of model checking were described. Secondly, the research progress of hardware Trojan detection technology based on model checking was introduced. Finally, the bottlenecks faced by the current technology were pointed out and the potential research direction was discussed.

12. Side Channel Security Oriented Evaluation and Protection on Hardware Implementations of Kyber

Abstract

The emergence of quantum computing and its impact on current cryptographic algorithms has triggered the migration to post-quantum cryptography (PQC). Among the PQC candidates, CRYSTALS-Kyber is a key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) that stands out from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standardization project. While software implementations of Kyber have been developed and evaluated recently, Kyber’s hardware implementations especially those designed with parallel architecture, are rarely discussed. To help better understand Kyber hardware designs and their security against side-channel analysis (SCA) attacks, in this paper, we first adapt the two most recent Kyber hardware designs for FPGA implementations. We then perform SCA attacks against these hardware designs with different architectures, i.e., parallelization and pipelining. Our experimental results show that Kyber designs on FPGA boards are vulnerable to SCA attacks including electromagnetic (EM) and power side channels. An attacker only needs $27 \sim 1,600$ power traces or $60 \sim 2,680$ EM traces to recover the decryption key successfully. Furthermore, we propose two first-order IND-CPA Kyber decapsulation masking protected designs, and then we evaluate their securities and overheads. The experimental results demonstrate that the side channel security of masked Kyber designs has increased by more than 10x.

Abstract

In order to improve the thermal insulation performance of multi-span greenhouse and verify the temperature and light properties of thermal insulation film equipped on the lateral facades of multi-span greenhouse, an experimental greenhouse is designed, in which the shed plastic film used for solar greenhouse covering is hanging on the lateral facades as lateral insulation measure of multi-span greenhouse.The experimental results show that the average temperature of greenhouse with thermal insulation measures is 2.9°C higher than that of the greenhouse without thermal insulation measures during the test period, the average temperatures of greenhouse with thermal insulation measures in daytime and at night on sunny days are 2.2°C and 3.5°C respectively higher than that of greenhouse without thermal insulation measures, while the temperature of greenhouse with thermal insulation measures on cloudy days is always higher than that of greenhouse without thermal insulation measures. The light intensity of greenhouse with thermal insulation measures on the lateral facades is 6.71% lower than that without thermal insulation measures.

Abstract

Side-channel analysis (SCA) attacks are major threats to hardware security. Upon this security threat, various countermeasures at different design layers have been proposed against SCA attacks. These approaches often introduce significant overheads and impose high requirements of side-channel security backgrounds to integrated circuit (IC) designers. In this article, we propose an automatic computer-aided design (CAD) tool that can be utilized to enhance the circuit resistance against electromagnetic (EM) SCA attacks. This new tool will guide security-driven placement and routing processes and can be seamlessly integrated into the modern IC design flow. The protected IC design will be resilient to SCA attacks with negligible area and power overheads. In order to develop this tool, we first investigate the root-cause of EM leakage at the layout level and mathematically demonstrate the feasibility of security-driven placement and routing through the EM leakage modeling. We then identify that the correlation between the data under protection and the EM leakage can be significantly reduced through data-dependent register reallocation and wire length adjustments. Simulation results on cryptographic circuits prove the effectiveness of both the constructed EM leakage model and the EM model-based CAD tool for EM side-channel security. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
