Achieving human-level intelligence requires refining cognitive distinctions between System 1 and System 2 thinking. While contemporary AI, driven by large language models, demonstrates human-like traits, it falls short of genuine cognition. Transitioning from structured benchmarks to real-world scenarios presents challenges for visual agents, often leading to inaccurate and overly confident responses. To address the challenge, we introduce FaST, which incorporates the Fast and Slow Thinking mechanism into visual agents. FaST employs a switch adapter to dynamically select between System 1/2 modes, tailoring the problem-solving approach to different task complexity. It tackles uncertain and unseen objects by adjusting model confidence and integrating new contextual data. With this novel design, we advocate a flexible system, hierarchical reasoning capabilities, and a transparent decision-making pipeline, all of which contribute to its ability to emulate human-like cognitive processes in visual intelligence. Empirical results demonstrate that FaST outperforms various well-known baselines, achieving 80.8% accuracy over VQA^{v2} for visual question answering and 48.7% GIoU score over ReasonSeg for reasoning segmentation, demonstrate FaST's superior performance. Extensive testing validates the efficacy and robustness of FaST's core components, showcasing its potential to advance the development of cognitive visual agents in AI systems. We aim to evaluate the efficacy of traditional machine learning and large language models (LLMs) in classifying anxiety and depression from long conversational transcripts. We fine-tune both established transformer models (BERT, RoBERTa, Longformer) and more recent large models (Mistral-7B), trained a Support Vector Machine with feature engineering, and assessed GPT models through prompting. We observe that state-of-the-art models fail to enhance classification outcomes compared to traditional machine learning methods.

Pursuing artificial intelligence for biomedical science, a.k.a. AI Scientist, draws increasing attention, where one common approach is to build a copilot agent driven by Large Language Models (LLMs). However, to evaluate such systems, people either rely on direct Question-Answering (QA) to the LLM itself, or in a biomedical experimental manner. How to precisely benchmark biomedical agents from an AI Scientist perspective remains largely unexplored. To this end, we draw inspiration from one most important abilities of scientists, understanding the literature, and introduce BioKGBench. In contrast to traditional evaluation benchmark that only focuses on factual QA, where the LLMs are known to have hallucination issues, we first disentangle "Understanding Literature" into two atomic abilities, i) "Understanding" the unstructured text from research papers by performing scientific claim verification, and ii) Ability to interact with structured Knowledge-Graph Question-Answering (KGQA) as a form of "Literature" grounding. We then formulate a novel agent task, dubbed KGCheck, using KGQA and domain-based Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to identify the factual errors of existing large-scale knowledge graph databases. We collect over two thousand data for two atomic tasks and 225 high-quality annotated data for the agent task. Surprisingly, we discover that state-of-the-art agents, both daily scenarios and biomedical ones, have either failed or inferior performance on our benchmark. We then introduce a simple yet effective baseline, dubbed BKGAgent. On the widely used popular knowledge graph, we discover over 90 factual errors which provide scenarios for agents to make discoveries and demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated wide-ranging applications across various fields and have shown significant potential in the academic peer-review process. However, existing applications are primarily limited to static review generation based on submitted papers, which fail to capture the dynamic and iterative nature of real-world peer reviews. In this paper, we reformulate the peer-review process as a multi-turn, long-context dialogue, incorporating distinct roles for authors, reviewers, and decision makers. We construct a comprehensive dataset containing over 26,841 papers with 92,017 reviews collected from multiple sources, including the top-tier conference and prestigious journal. This dataset is meticulously designed to facilitate the applications of LLMs for multi-turn dialogues, effectively simulating the complete peer-review process. Furthermore, we propose a series of metrics to evaluate the performance of LLMs for each role under this reformulated peer-review setting, ensuring fair and comprehensive evaluations. We believe this work provides a promising perspective on enhancing the LLM-driven peer-review process by incorporating dynamic, role-based interactions. It aligns closely with the iterative and interactive nature of real-world academic peer review, offering a robust foundation for future research and development in this area. Adversarial training serves as one of the most popular and effective methods to defend against adversarial perturbations. However, most defense mechanisms only consider a single type of perturbation while various attack methods might be adopted to perform stronger adversarial attacks against the deployed model in real-world scenarios, e.g., $\ell_2$ or $\ell_\infty$. Defending against various attacks can be a challenging problem since multi-perturbation adversarial training and its variants only achieve suboptimal robustness trade-offs, due to the theoretical limit to multi-perturbation robustness for a single model. Besides, it is impractical to deploy large models in some storage-efficient scenarios. To settle down these drawbacks, in this paper we propose a novel multi-perturbation adversarial training framework, parameter-saving adversarial training (PSAT), to reinforce multi-perturbation robustness with an advantageous side effect of saving parameters, which leverages hypernetworks to train specialized models against a single perturbation and aggregate these specialized models to defend against multiple perturbations. Eventually, we extensively evaluate and compare our proposed method with state-of-the-art single/multi-perturbation robust methods against various latest attack methods on different datasets, showing the robustness superiority and parameter efficiency of our proposed method, e.g., for the CIFAR-10 dataset with ResNet-50 as the backbone, PSAT saves approximately 80\% of parameters with achieving the state-of-the-art robustness trade-off accuracy., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance on face recognition (FR) tasks in the last decade. In real scenarios, the deployment of DNNs requires taking various face accessories into consideration, like glasses, hats, and masks. In the COVID-19 pandemic era, wearing face masks is one of the most effective ways to defend against the novel coronavirus. However, DNNs are known to be vulnerable to adversarial examples with a small but elaborated perturbation. Thus, a facial mask with adversarial perturbations may pose a great threat to the widely used deep learning-based FR models. In this paper, we consider a challenging adversarial setting: targeted attack against FR models. We propose a new stealthy physical masked FR attack via adversarial style optimization. Specifically, we train an adversarial style mask generator that hides adversarial perturbations inside style masks. Moreover, to ameliorate the phenomenon of sub-optimization with one fixed style, we propose to discover the optimal style given a target through style optimization in a continuous relaxation manner. We simultaneously optimize the generator and the style selection for generating strong and stealthy adversarial style masks. We evaluated the effectiveness and transferability of our proposed method via extensive white-box and black-box digital experiments. Binary similarity detection is a critical technique that has been applied in many real-world scenarios where source code is not available, e.g., bug search, malware analysis, and code plagiarism detection. Existing works are ineffective in detecting similar binaries in cases where different compiling optimizations, compilers, source code versions, or obfuscation are deployed. We observe that all the cases do not change a binary's key code behaviors although they significantly modify its syntax and structure. With this key observation, we extract a set of key instructions from a binary to capture its key code behaviors. By detecting the similarity between two binaries' key instructions, we can address well the ineffectiveness limitation of existing works. Specifically, we translate each extracted key instruction into a self-defined key expression, generating a key-semantics graph based on the binary's control flow. Each node in the key-semantics graph denotes a key instruction, and the node attribute is the key expression. To quantify the similarity between two given key-semantics graphs, we first serialize each graph into a sequence of key expressions by topological sort. Then, we tokenize and concatenate key expressions to generate token lists. We calculate the locality-sensitive hash value for all token lists and quantify their similarity. %We implement a prototype, called SemDiff, consisting of two modules: graph generation and graph diffing. The first module generates a pair of key-semantics graphs and the second module diffs the graphs. Our evaluation results show that overall, SemDiff outperforms state-of-the-art tools when detecting the similarity of binaries generated from different optimization levels, compilers, and obfuscations. Optical flow is an indispensable building block for various important computer vision tasks, including motion estimation, object tracking, and disparity measurement. In this work, we propose TransFlow, a pure transformer architecture for optical flow estimation. Compared to dominant CNN-based methods, TransFlow demonstrates three advantages. First, it provides more accurate correlation and trustworthy matching in flow estimation by utilizing spatial self-attention and cross-attention mechanisms between adjacent frames to effectively capture global dependencies; Second, it recovers more compromised information (e.g., occlusion and motion blur) in flow estimation through long-range temporal association in dynamic scenes; Third, it enables a concise self-learning paradigm and effectively eliminate the complex and laborious multi-stage pre-training procedures. We achieve the state-of-the-art results on the Sintel, KITTI-15, as well as several downstream tasks, including video object detection, interpolation and stabilization. Facial forgery detection is a crucial but extremely challenging topic, with the fast development of forgery techniques making the synthetic artefact highly indistinguishable. Prior works show that by mining both spatial and frequency information the forgery detection performance of deep learning models can be vastly improved. However, leveraging multiple types of information usually requires more than one branch in the neural network, which makes the model heavy and cumbersome. Knowledge distillation, as an important technique for efficient modelling, could be a possible remedy. We find that existing knowledge distillation methods have difficulties distilling a dual-branch model into a single-branch model. More specifically, knowledge distillation on both the spatial and frequency branches has degraded performance than distillation only on the spatial branch. To handle such problem, we propose a novel two-in-one knowledge distillation framework which can smoothly merge the information from a large dual-branch network into a small single-branch network, with the help of different dedicated feature projectors and the gradient homogenization technique. Experimental analysis on two datasets, FaceForensics++ and Celeb-DF, shows that our proposed framework achieves superior performance for facial forgery detection with much fewer parameters.

Forgery facial images and videos have increased the concern of digital security. It leads to the significant development of detecting forgery data recently. However, the data, especially the videos published on the Internet, are usually compressed with lossy compression algorithms such as H.264. The compressed data could significantly degrade the performance of recent detection algorithms. The existing anti-compression algorithms focus on enhancing the performance in detecting heavily compressed data but less consider the compression adaption to the data from various compression levels. We believe creating a forgery detection model that can handle the data compressed with unknown levels is important. To enhance the performance for such models, we consider the weak compressed and strong compressed data as two views of the original data and they should have similar representation and relationships with other samples. We propose a novel anti-compression forgery detection framework by maintaining closer relations within data under different compression levels. Specifically, the algorithm measures the pair-wise similarity within data as the relations, and forcing the relations of weak and strong compressed data close to each other, thus improving the discriminate power for detecting strong compressed data. To achieve a better strong compressed data relation guided by the less compressed one, we apply video level contrastive learning for weak compressed data, which forces the model to produce similar representations within the same video and far from the negative samples. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithm could boost performance for strong compressed data while improving the accuracy rate when detecting the clean data.

Instance segmentation in videos, which aims to segment and track multiple objects in video frames, has garnered a flurry of research attention in recent years. In this paper, we present a novel weakly supervised framework with \textbf{S}patio-\textbf{T}emporal \textbf{C}ollaboration for instance \textbf{Seg}mentation in videos, namely \textbf{STC-Seg}. Concretely, STC-Seg demonstrates four contributions. First, we leverage the complementary representations from unsupervised depth estimation and optical flow to produce effective pseudo-labels for training deep networks and predicting high-quality instance masks. Second, to enhance the mask generation, we devise a puzzle loss, which enables end-to-end training using box-level annotations. Third, our tracking module jointly utilizes bounding-box diagonal points with spatio-temporal discrepancy to model movements, which largely improves the robustness to different object appearances. Finally, our framework is flexible and enables image-level instance segmentation methods to operate the video-level task. We conduct an extensive set of experiments on the KITTI MOTS and YT-VIS datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves strong performance and even outperforms fully supervised TrackR-CNN and MaskTrack R-CNN. We believe that STC-Seg can be a valuable addition to the community, as it reflects the tip of an iceberg about the innovative opportunities in the weakly supervised paradigm for instance segmentation in videos.

Generating molecules that bind to specific proteins is an important but challenging task in drug discovery. Previous works usually generate atoms in an auto-regressive way, where element types and 3D coordinates of atoms are generated one by one. However, in real-world molecular systems, the interactions among atoms in an entire molecule are global, leading to the energy function pair-coupled among atoms. With such energy-based consideration, the modeling of probability should be based on joint distributions, rather than sequentially conditional ones. Thus, the unnatural sequentially auto-regressive modeling of molecule generation is likely to violate the physical rules, thus resulting in poor properties of the generated molecules. In this work, a generative diffusion model for molecular 3D structures based on target proteins as contextual constraints is established, at a full-atom level in a non-autoregressive way. Given a designated 3D protein binding site, our model learns the generative process that denoises both element types and 3D coordinates of an entire molecule, with an equivariant network. Experimentally, the proposed method shows competitive performance compared with prevailing works in terms of high affinity with proteins and appropriate molecule sizes as well as other drug properties such as drug-likeness of the generated molecules., Comment: 13 pages

Modern smart TVs often communicate with their remote controls (including those smart phone simulated ones) using multiple wireless channels (e.g., Infrared, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi). However, this multi-channel remote control communication introduces a new attack surface. An inherent security flaw is that remote controls of most smart TVs are designed to work in a benign environment rather than an adversarial one, and thus wireless communications between a smart TV and its remote controls are not strongly protected. Attackers could leverage such flaw to abuse the remote control communication and compromise smart TV systems. In this paper, we propose EvilScreen, a novel attack that exploits ill-protected remote control communications to access protected resources of a smart TV or even control the screen. EvilScreen exploits a multi-channel remote control mimicry vulnerability present in today smart TVs. Unlike other attacks, which compromise the TV system by exploiting code vulnerabilities or malicious third-party apps, EvilScreen directly reuses commands of different remote controls, combines them together to circumvent deployed authentication and isolation policies, and finally accesses or controls TV resources remotely. We evaluated eight mainstream smart TVs and found that they are all vulnerable to EvilScreen attacks, including a Samsung product adopting the ISO/IEC security specification.

The existence of native code in Android apps plays an important role in triggering inconspicuous propagation of secrets and circumventing malware detection. However, the state-of-the-art information-flow analysis tools for Android apps all have limited capabilities of analyzing native code. Due to the complexity of binary-level static analysis, most static analyzers choose to build conservative models for a selected portion of native code. Though the recent inter-language analysis improves the capability of tracking information flow in native code, it is still far from attaining similar effectiveness of the state-of-the-art information-flow analyzers that focus on non-native Java methods. To overcome the above constraints, we propose a new analysis framework, $\mu$Dep, to detect sensitive information flows of the Android apps containing native code. In this framework, we combine a control-flow based static binary analysis with a mutation-based dynamic analysis to model the tainting behaviors of native code in the apps. Based on the result of the analyses, $\mu$Dep conducts a stub generation for the related native functions to facilitate the state-of-the-art analyzer DroidSafe with fine-grained tainting behavior summaries of native code. The experimental results show that our framework is competitive on the accuracy, and effective in analyzing the information flows in real-world apps and malware compared with the state-of-the-art inter-language static analysis.

The misunderstanding and incorrect configurations of cryptographic primitives have exposed severe security vulnerabilities to attackers. Due to the pervasiveness and diversity of cryptographic misuses, a comprehensive and accurate understanding of how cryptographic misuses can undermine the security of an Android app is critical to the subsequent mitigation strategies but also challenging. Although various approaches have been proposed to detect cryptographic misuse in Android apps, studies have yet to focus on estimating the security risks of cryptographic misuse. To address this problem, we present an extensible framework for deciding the threat level of cryptographic misuse in Android apps. Firstly, we propose a general and unified specification for representing cryptographic misuses to make our framework extensible and develop adapters to unify the detection results of the state-of-the-art cryptographic misuse detectors, resulting in an adapter-based detection tool chain for a more comprehensive list of cryptographic misuses. Secondly, we employ a misuse-originating data-flow analysis to connect each cryptographic misuse to a set of data-flow sinks in an app, based on which we propose a quantitative data-flow-driven metric for assessing the overall risk of the app introduced by cryptographic misuses. To make the per-app assessment more useful for app vetting at the app-store level, we apply unsupervised learning to predict and classify the top risky threats to guide more efficient subsequent mitigation. In the experiments on an instantiated implementation of the framework, we evaluate the accuracy of our detection and the effect of data-flow-driven risk assessment of our framework. Our empirical study on over 40,000 apps and the analysis of popular apps reveal important security observations on the real threats of cryptographic misuse in Android apps.

In order to support a variety of missions and deal with different flight environments, drone control programs typically provide configurable control parameters. However, such a flexibility introduces vulnerabilities. One such vulnerability, referred to as range specification bugs, has been recently identified. The vulnerability originates from the fact that even though each individual parameter receives a value in the recommended value range, certain combinations of parameter values may affect the drone physical stability. In this paper we develop a novel learning-guided search system to find such combinations, that we refer to as incorrect configurations. Our system applies metaheuristic search algorithms mutating configurations to detect the configuration parameters that have values driving the drone to unstable physical states. To guide the mutations, our system leverages a machine learning predictor as the fitness evaluator. Finally, by utilizing multi-objective optimization, our system returns the feasible ranges based on the mutation search results. Because in our system the mutations are guided by a predictor, evaluating the parameter configurations does not require realistic/simulation executions. Therefore, our system supports a comprehensive and yet efficient detection of incorrect configurations. We have carried out an experimental evaluation of our system. Dynamic taint analysis (DTA) has been widely used in various security-relevant scenarios that need to track the runtime information flow of programs. Dynamic binary instrumentation (DBI) is a prevalent technique in achieving effective dynamic taint tracking on commodity hardware and systems. However, the significant performance overhead incurred by dynamic taint analysis restricts its usage in production systems. Previous efforts on mitigating the performance penalty fall into two categories, parallelizing taint tracking from program execution and abstracting the tainting logic to a higher granularity. Both approaches have only met with limited success. In this work, we propose Sdft, an efficient approach that combines the precision of DBI-based instruction-level taint tracking and the efficiency of function-level abstract taint propagation. First, we build the library function summaries automatically with reachability analysis on the program dependency graph (PDG) to specify the control- and data dependencies between the input parameters, output parameters, and global variables of the target library. Then we derive the taint rules for the target library functions and develop taint tracking for library function that is tightly integrated into the state-of-the-art DTA framework Libdft. By applying our approach to the core C library functions of glibc, we report an average of 1.58x speed up of the tracking performance compared with Libdft64. We also validate the effectiveness of the hybrid taint tracking and the ability on detecting real-world vulnerabilities.

Recent IoT applications gradually adapt more complicated end systems with commodity software. Ensuring the runtime integrity of these software is a challenging task for the remote controller or cloud services. Popular enforcement is the runtime remote attestation which requires the end system (prover) to generate evidence for its runtime behavior and a remote trusted verifier to attest the evidence. Control-flow attestation is a kind of runtime attestation that provides diagnoses towards the remote control-flow hijacking at the prover. Most of these attestation approaches focus on small or embedded software. The recent advance to attesting complicated software depends on the source code and CFG traversing to measure the checkpoint-separated subpaths, which may be unavailable for commodity software and cause possible context missing between consecutive subpaths in the measurements. In this work, we propose a resilient control-flow attestation (ReCFA), which does not need the offline measurement of all legitimate control-flow paths, thus scalable to be used on complicated commodity software. Our main contribution is a multi-phase approach to condensing the runtime control-flow events; as a result, the vast amount of control-flow events are abstracted into a deliverable size. The condensing approach consists of filtering skippable call sites, folding program-structure related control-flow events, and a greedy compression. Our approach is implemented with binary-level static analysis and instrumentation. We employ a shadow stack mechanism at the verifier to enforce context-sensitive control-flow integrity and diagnose the compromised control-flow events violating the security policy. The experimental results on real-world benchmarks show both the efficiency of the control-flow condensing and the effectiveness of security enforcement.

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) improve both the bandwidth and energy efficiency of wideband communication systems by using low-cost passive elements for reflecting the impinging signals with adjustable phase shifts. To realize the full potential of IRS-aided systems, having accurate channel state information (CSI) is indispensable, but it is challenging to acquire, since these passive devices cannot carry out transmit/receive signal processing. The existing channel estimation methods conceived for wideband IRS-aided communication systems only consider the channel's frequency selectivity, but ignore the effect of beam squint, despite its severe performance degradation. Hence we fill this gap and conceive wideband channel estimation for IRS-aided communication systems by explicitly taking the effect of beam squint into consideration. We demonstrate that the mutual correlation function between the spatial steering vectors and the cascaded two-hop channel reflected by the IRS has two peaks, which leads to a pair of estimated angles for a single propagation path, due to the effect of beam squint. One of these two estimated angles is the frequency-independent `actual angle', while the other one is the frequency-dependent `false angle'. To reduce the influence of false angles on channel estimation, we propose a twin-stage orthogonal matching pursuit (TS-OMP) algorithm.

The densely packed antennas of millimeter-Wave (mmWave) MIMO systems are often blocked by the rain, snow, dust and even by fingers, which will change the channel's characteristics and degrades the system's performance. In order to solve this problem, we propose a cross-entropy inspired antenna array diagnosis detection (CE-AAD) technique by exploiting the correlations of adjacent antennas, when blockages occur at the transmitter. Then, we extend the proposed CE-AAD algorithm to the case, where blockages occur at transmitter and receiver simultaneously. Our simulation results show that the proposed CE-AAD algorithm outperforms its traditional counterparts.

A fundamental premise of SMS One-Time Password (OTP) is that the used pseudo-random numbers (PRNs) are uniquely unpredictable for each login session. Hence, the process of generating PRNs is the most critical step in the OTP authentication. An improper implementation of the pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) will result in predictable or even static OTP values, making them vulnerable to potential attacks. In this paper, we present a vulnerability study against PRNGs implemented for Android apps. A key challenge is that PRNGs are typically implemented on the server-side, and thus the source code is not accessible. To resolve this issue, we build an analysis tool, \sysname, to assess implementations of the PRNGs in an automated manner without the source code requirement. Through reverse engineering, \sysname identifies the apps using SMS OTP and triggers each app's login functionality to retrieve OTP values. It further assesses the randomness of the OTP values to identify vulnerable PRNGs. By analyzing 6,431 commercially used Android apps downloaded from \tool{Google Play} and \tool{Tencent Myapp}, \sysname identified 399 vulnerable apps that generate predictable OTP values. Even worse, 194 vulnerable apps use the OTP authentication alone without any additional security mechanisms, leading to insecure authentication against guessing attacks and replay attacks.

This work provides the community with a timely comprehensive review of backdoor attacks and countermeasures on deep learning. According to the attacker's capability and affected stage of the machine learning pipeline, the attack surfaces are recognized to be wide and then formalized into six categorizations: code poisoning, outsourcing, pretrained, data collection, collaborative learning and post-deployment. Accordingly, attacks under each categorization are combed. The countermeasures are categorized into four general classes: blind backdoor removal, offline backdoor inspection, online backdoor inspection, and post backdoor removal. Accordingly, we review countermeasures, and compare and analyze their advantages and disadvantages. We have also reviewed the flip side of backdoor attacks, which are explored for i) protecting intellectual property of deep learning models, ii) acting as a honeypot to catch adversarial example attacks, and iii) verifying data deletion requested by the data contributor.Overall, the research on defense is far behind the attack, and there is no single defense that can prevent all types of backdoor attacks. In some cases, an attacker can intelligently bypass existing defenses with an adaptive attack. Drawing the insights from the systematic review, we also present key areas for future research on the backdoor, such as empirical security evaluations from physical trigger attacks, and in particular, more efficient and practical countermeasures are solicited., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

A learning federation is composed of multiple participants who use the federated learning technique to collaboratively train a machine learning model without directly revealing the local data. Nevertheless, the existing federated learning frameworks have a serious defect that even a participant is revoked, its data are still remembered by the trained model. In a company-level cooperation, allowing the remaining companies to use a trained model that contains the memories from a revoked company is obviously unacceptable, because it can lead to a big conflict of interest. Therefore, we emphatically discuss the participant revocation problem of federated learning and design a revocable federated random forest (RF) framework, RevFRF, to further illustrate the concept of revocable federated learning. In RevFRF, we first define the security problems to be resolved by a revocable federated RF. Then, a suite of homomorphic encryption based secure protocols are designed for federated RF construction, prediction and revocation. Through theoretical analysis and experiments, we show that the protocols can securely and efficiently implement collaborative training of an RF and ensure that the memories of a revoked participant in the trained RF are securely removed.
