13. Recent progress in 4D printing of stimuli-responsive polymeric materials

Abstract

4D printing is proposed based on the additive manufacturing of stimuli-responsive materials and structures, which can realize shape changing upon external stimuli. This article reviews the 4D printing methods and actuating performances of 4D printing structures based on shape memory polymers, hydrogels, liquid crystal elastomers, and electroactive polymers. This article shows that the shape morphing properties of single materials are limited, while 4D printing of composites can integrate the various driving modes of different smart materials. In the end, challenges facing 4D printing such as broadening the scope of smart materials, improving printing processes, the compatibility of printing different materials have been discussed.

Abstract

Ionic polymer–metal composites (IPMCs) are a class of ionic actuators considered as potential candidates for future soft electronics that are operable under low voltages (generally <10 V), flexible, lightweight, and can be miniaturized. However, IPMCs can only generate linear bending deformation, but not complex 3D deformation, thus limiting their practical application. Herein, the IPMC actuators with anisotropic stripe microstructures are developed inspired by the botanical systems where microstructural anisotropy of the cell walls can lead to dynamic conformations. The stripe microstructure obtained via one‐way polishing is designed to present a certain angle to the edges of the IPMCs in the longitudinal direction and can be localized. Hence, the IPMCs are subjected to the anisotropic action of the microstructure while bending, yielding a complex 3D deformation. In addition, the large surface area and high ion accessibility area caused by polishing can enhance the actuation performance of IPMCs which is also influenced by the stripe angle, including higher displacement (up to 162%) and larger blocking force (up to 226%). Outstanding electromechanical properties and multimodal deformation model of IPMC actuators with microstructure are demonstrated by applications such as a soft switch, robotic gripper, and imitation of plant organs. Abstract

The flexible stretchable sensors have great potential for implementation in various applications, such as intelligent soft robots, health monitoring, and motion detection. However, most of the flexible stretchable sensors with microstructures and high sensitivities are fabricated by expensive templates and complex processes. In consideration of large‐scale fabrication, a low cost and efficient way is in great demand. Herein, electroless plating on Nafion films with decent swelling ratios are proposed to fabricate stretchable sensors with wrinkle‐structured electrodes. By adding isopropanol (IPA) to the electroless plating process, the H2O‐IPA sensor with larger swelling ratio shows deeper surface wrinkles, higher surface roughness, and better sensitivity to strain. At the same time, the H2O‐IPA sensor exhibit good durability (500 cycles). By mounting the sensor on the joint of human finger, the motion of the finger bending and even the bending degree can be accurately detected, indicating the potential use in the field of wearable devices and soft electronic skins. Abstract

Piezochromic materials, which show color changes resulting from external pressure or mechanical grinding, are of great interest from a scientific viewpoint owing to their potential applications as pressure-sensing and optical-recording systems.[1] It has been recently discovered solid-state fluorescence properties and piezochromic luminescence in a family of 9,10-Bis((E)-n-(pyrid-2-yl)vinyl)anthracene, BPnVA (n=2 orto-,3 metha- and 4 para-) compounds, see Figure 1.[2] The crystal structures indicate that the three compounds with varying position of the nitrogen on the external pyridyl exhibit different molecular packing modes. In this work, we aim at providing further insight into the interplay played by the molecular and supramolecular structural changes and the luminescence changes observed under pressure by using a combined experimental-theoretical approach that links Raman spectroscopy with DFT calculations. Abstract

The development of organic fluorophores with efficient solid-state emissions or aggregated-state emissions in the red to near-infrared region is still challenging. Reported herein are fluorophores having aggregation-induced emission ranging from the orange to far red/near-infrared (FR/NIR) region.
