4. Removing boron from metallurgical grade silicon by a high basic slag refining technique

Abstract

A new purification method of removing boron from metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) using a high baisicity slag was developed in this paper. The typical impurities Al, Ca, Ti, B, P etc in MG-Si can be removed by the binary calcium sillicate slag and it is especially efficient for removing impurity Boron. It was found that the maximal distribution coefficient of boron between calcium sillicate slag and silicon reaches to 1.57 when the mass ratio of CaO/SiO2 was 1.5 and the composition was 60%CaO-40%SiO2. It showed that the oxidizability of calcium sillicate slag was affected and restricted by the basicity and the mass ratio of acid oxide SiO slag according to the thermodynamic relationship. The boron concentration in MG-Si can be reduced from 18x10-6 to 4.5x10-6 and 1.4x10-6, respectively, when using the ternary slags 40.5%CaO-49.5%SiO2-10%Li2O and 32CaO-38%SiO2-30%Li2O.

Abstract

The vacuum distillation of aluminum from Si-Fe-Al ternary alloy with high content of Al is studied by a molecular interaction volume model (MIVM) in this paper. The vapor-liquid phase equilibrium of the Si-Fe-Al system in vacuum distillation has been calculated using only the properties of pure components and the activity coefficients. A significant advantage of the model lies in its ability to predict the thermodynamic properties of liquid alloys using only binary infinite dilution activity coefficients. The thermodynamic activities and activity coefficients of components of the related Si-Fe, Si- Al and Fe-Al binary and the Si-Fe-Al ternary alloy systems are calculated based on the MIVM. The computational activity values are presented graphically, and evaluated with the reported experiment data in the literature, which shows that the prediction effect of the proposed model is of stability and reliability.

8. Boron removal from metallurgical grade silicon using a FeCl2 molten salt refining technique

Abstract

The slag refining for boron removal from metallurgical grade silicon is a promising metallurgical process for producing solar grade silicon. In this paper, FeCl2 molten salt has been used as a new refining agent to remove boron from MG-Si. The effects of refining time and mass ratio of MG-Si to FeCl2 molten salt on boron removal have been investigated in detail. The results showed that boron can be efficiently removed in form of BCl3 and boron concentration in MG-Si was successfully reduced from 22×10-6 to 4×10-6 at 1823K for 2 h with the mass ratio of FeCl2 molten salt to MG-Si for 1.0. The rate equation of boron removal using FeCl2 molten salt was proposed and established in kinetic, which showed a large difference in removal limitation of boron compared with thermodynamics.

Abstract

22Na is an important isotope for the study of extinct radioactivity, meanwhile its sufficiently long half life provides the possibility to observe live 22Na in nearby nova explosions. The 22Na(p,γ) 23Mg is one of the key reactions that influence the 22Na abundance in nova ejecta. To study the proton resonant states in 23Mg relevant to the astrophysical 22Na(p,γ) 23Mg reaction rates, two measurements have been carried out at the CRIB separator of University of Tokyo, and the RIBLL secondary beamline in Lanzhou, respectively. The 22Na secondary beam was produced via the 1H(22Ne, 22Na)n charge exchange reaction. Thick-target inverse-kinematics method is applied to obtain the excitation function of 22Na+p elastic scattering. Extended gas target and solid state polyethylene foil were used in the two measurements, respectively, to map the different excitation energy region of the compound nucleus 23Mg. Several new resonant levels are observed and their contribution to the 22Na(p,γ) 23Mg reaction rate is evaluated.

Abstract

The mass of $^{27}$P is expected to impact the X-ray burst (XRB) model predictions of burst light curves and the composition of the burst ashes, but large uncertainties and inconsistencies still exist in the reported $^{27}$P masses. We have used the β-decay spectroscopy of $^{27}$S to determine the most precise mass excess of $^{27}$P to date to be −659(9) keV, which is 63 keV (2.3σ) higher and a factor of 3 more precise than the value recommended in the 2016 Atomic Mass Evaluation. Based on the new $^{27}$P mass, the Si26(p,γ)27P reaction rate and its uncertainty were recalculated using Monte Carlo techniques. We also estimated the previously unknown mass excess of $^{27}$S to be 17678(77) keV, based on the measured β-delayed two-proton energy and the Coulomb displacement energy relations. The impact of these well-constrained masses and reaction rates on the modeling of the explosive astrophysical scenarios has been investigated by post-processing XRB and hydrodynamic nova models. Compared to the model calculations based on the masses and rates from databases, the abundance of A=26 in the burst ashes is increased by a factor of 2.4, while no substantial change was found in the XRB energy generation rate or the light curve. Our calculation also suggests that $^{27}$S is not a significant waiting point in the rapid proton capture process, and the change of the Si26(p,γ)27P reaction rate is not sufficiently large to affect the conclusion previously drawn on the nova contribution to the synthesis of galactic $^{26}$Al.

Abstract

Based on dominant production mechanism, ?meson production in high energy proton-proton collision is studied. A calculation including contributions to the total cross section of the process from S11, P11 and D13 resonances is performed. The theoretical prediction is in general agreement with existing data and shows that the S11 resonance dominantly contributes to the total cross section while the contributions from the P11 and D13 resonances are negligible.

Abstract

Comprehensive utilisation of hydrometallurgy zinc residue, goethite especially, is proposed. The raw material used in the study was mixed residue while the mass ratio of goethite and lead-silver residue was fixed at 4:1. On the basis of the mixed residue's characteristics, the top-blowing fuming method using induction furnace was selected. The effects of parameters such as CaO/SiO2 (0.61-0.91), C/feed mass ratio (18-26%) and reduction time (20-60 min) were studied. Under optimum conditions of 0.71 CaO/SiO2, 24% C/feed mass ratio and 50 min reduction time, the average fuming efficiency of zinc, lead and silver in the mixed residue could reach up to 97.2, 98.1 and 82% respectively., Comprehensive utilisation of hydrometallurgy zinc residue, goethite especially, is proposed.
