1. IRF2 Affects LPS- and IFN-γ-Induced Pro-Inflammatory Responses, Cell Viability, Migration and Apoptosis of Macrophages by Regulating IRG1

IRF1, IRF3, and IRF9 regulate the expression of immune-responsive gene 1 (IRG1) in macrophages. However, the role of IRF2 in the inflammatory response of macrophages remains somewhat contradictory. The regulatory relationship between IRF2 and IRG1 and their role in macrophages remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the role of IRF2 and IRG1 in macrophages.Methods: Overexpression plasmids of IRF2 (IRF2-pcDNA3.1) and silencing siRNA targeting IRF2 and IRG1 (si-IRF2, si-IRG1) were constructed and transfected into RAW264.7 cells respectively. Subsequently, cells were treated with LPS and IFN-γ for 24 h. The expression of IRF2, IRG1, iNOS, IL-6, and BCL-xl was detected using Western blotting and qRT-PCR. Cell viability, migration and apoptosis were determined by CCK-8, transwell and flow cytometry. The IRG1 promoter region was cloned into the pGL3-basic plasmid. A dual-luciferase reporter assay was performed to verify the regulatory relationship between IRF2 and IRG1.Results: IRF2 overexpression inhibited the expression of IL-6 and iNOS, cell migration, and apoptosis and elevated the expression of BCL-xl, IRG1, and cell viability of LPS- and IFN-γ-induced macrophages. IRF2 silencing had an opposite effect. IRF2 activated the promoter activity of IRG1. The inhibitory effects on LPS- and IFN-γ-induced proinflammatory responses, cell migration, apoptosis, and enhancing effects on the cell viability of over-expressed IRF2 were reversed by IRG1 silencing.Conclusion: IRF2 promoted the promoter activity of IRG1 and regulated directly the expression of IRG1. IRF2 inhibited LPS and IFN-γ-induced pro-inflammatory responses, cell migration and apoptosis, enhanced cell viability in macrophages through regulating IRG1. Abstract: The establishment of a possible connection between neutrino emission and gravitational-wave (GW) bursts is important to our understanding of the physical processes that occur when black holes or neutron stars merge. In the Daya Bay experiment, using the data collected from December 2011 to August 2017, a search was performed for electron-Antineutrino signals that coincided with detected GW events, including GW150914, GW151012, GW151226, GW170104, GW170608, GW170814, and GW170817. We used three time windows of 10, 500, and 1000 s relative to the occurrence of the GW events and a neutrino energy range of 1.8 to 100 MeV to search for correlated neutrino candidates. The detected electron-Antineutrino candidates were consistent with the expected background rates for all the three time windows. Assuming monochromatic spectra, we found upper limits (90% confidence level) of the electron-Antineutrino fluence of (1.13-2.44)×1011 cm-2 at 5 MeV to 8.0×107 cm-2 at 100 MeV for the three time windows. Under the assumption of a Fermi-Dirac spectrum, the upper limits were found to be (5.4-7.0)×109 cm-2 for the three time windows.

Abstract: The prediction of reactor antineutrino spectra will play a crucial role asreactor experiments enter the precision era. The positron energy spectrum of3.5 million antineutrino inverse beta decay reactions observed by the Daya Bayexperiment, in combination with the fission rates of fissile isotopes in thereactor, is used to extract the positron energy spectra resulting from thefission of specific isotopes. This information can be used to produce aprecise, data-based prediction of the antineutrino energy spectrum in otherreactor antineutrino experiments with different fission fractions than DayaBay. The positron energy spectra are unfolded to obtain the antineutrino energyspectra by removing the contribution from detector response with the Wiener-SVDunfolding method. Consistent results are obtained with other unfolding methods.A technique to construct a data-based prediction of the reactor antineutrinoenergy spectrum is proposed and investigated. Given the reactor fissionfractions, the technique can predict the energy spectrum to a 2% precision. Inaddition, we illustrate how to perform a rigorous comparison between theunfolded antineutrino spectrum and a theoretical model prediction that avoidsthe input model bias of the unfolding method.

Abstract: The precise measurement of the spectrum of protons, the most abundant component of the cosmic radiation, is necessary to understand the source and acceleration of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. This work reports the measurement of the cosmic ray proton fluxes with kinetic energies from 40 GeV to 100 TeV, with 2 1/2 years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). This is the first time that an experiment directly measures the cosmic ray protons up to ~100 TeV with high statistics. The measured spectrum confirms the spectral hardening at ~300 GeV found by previous experiments and reveals a softening at ~13.6 TeV, with the spectral index changing from ~2.60 to ~2.85. Our result suggests the existence of a new spectral feature of cosmic rays at energies lower than the so-called knee and sheds new light on the origin of Galactic cosmic rays.

However, whether air pollution (AP) serves as a risk factor for post-adolescent acne remains elusive.Aim: To determine the relationship between short-term AP exposure (within 7 days) and outpatient visits for post-adolescent acne.Methods: Daily outpatient visit data for post-adolescent acne and routinely AP data between 2010 and 2013 were collected from Xi’an, China. A generalized additive regression model was used to analyze the relationship between outpatient visits for post-adolescent acne and short-term ambient AP exposure. The gender-specific analyses were conducted as well.Results: Totally, 27,190 outpatient visits for post-adolescent acne were included. The results revealed that a 10 μg/m3 increase in PM10, SO2, and NO2 at lag 0– 7 day was associated with the increase of outpatient visits for post-adolescent acne at 0.84% (95% CI: 0.53%, 1.16%), 1.61% (95% CI: 0.12%, 3.10%), and 3.50% (95% CI: 1.60%, 5.40%), respectively. The significant positive associations of PM10, SO2, and NO2 were found at both single-lag models and moving average models. The gender-specific analyses showed that the effect estimates of PM10 was stronger for females than for males, while there was no observed gender difference in the effects of SO2 and NO2.Conclusion: Short-term exposure to AP was associated with increased outpatient visits for post-adolescent acne, especially for females in the effects of PM10.Keywords: short-term, air pollution, post-adolescent acne, adult acne, time-series analysis

RLS was diagnosed using the International RLS Study Group (IRLSSG) criteria. The patients were evaluated face-to-face using the IRLSSG rating scale, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Hamilton Depression Scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The patients were followed up for 9 months. Death was considered an endpoint event. The cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events were investigated.Results: The prevalence of RLS in hemodialysis patients was 40.7% and was associated with factors such as duration of hemodialysis, hypersensitive C-reactive protein, hyperparathyroidism, glycosylated serum protein, and erythropoietin treatment. The scores of the PSQI, ESS, and Hamilton Depression Scale in the RLS group were significantly higher than those in the non-RLS group (p < 0.05). During follow-ups, the incidence rate of cardiovascular diseases was 18.8% in the RLS group and 8.6% in the non-RLS group (p < 0.005). The IRLSSG rating scores were significantly higher in RLS patients with kidney transplantation failure compared with those without transplantation (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The prevalence of RLS was high in hemodialysis patients. The risk factors of RLS included duration of hemodialysis, hypersensitive C-reactive protein, hyperparathyroidism, glycosylated serum protein, and erythropoietin treatment. RLS affected sleep quality and emotion and increased the risk of cardiovascular diseases in hemodialysis patients. Abstract: The Daya Bay reactor antineutrino experiment is designed to make a precision measurement of the neutrino mixing angle θ13, and recently made the definitive discovery of its non-zero value. It utilizes a set of eight, functionally identical antineutrino detectors to measure the reactor flux and spectrum at baselines of ∼ 300-2000 m from the Daya Bay and Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plants. The Daya Bay antineutrino detectors were built in an above-ground facility and deployed side-by-side at three underground experimental sites near and far from the nuclear reactors. This configuration allows the experiment to make a precision measurement of reactor antineutrino disappearance over km-long baselines and reduces relative systematic uncertainties between detectors and nuclear reactors. This paper describes the assembly and installation of the Daya Bay antineutrino detectors. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

However, objective psychological tests to detect cognitive impairment are equivocal. Neural function associated with cognitive performance may explain the discrepancy. The aim of this study was to investigate the hemodynamic response patterns of patients with chronic insomnia disorder (CID) using the noninvasive and low-cost functional neuroimaging technique of multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in order to identify changes of neural function associated with cognitive performance.Patients and methods: Twenty-four CID patients and twenty-five healthy controls matched for age, right-hand dominance, educational level, and gender were examined during verbal fluency tasks (VFT) using NIRS. A covariance analysis was conducted to analyze differences of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) changes in prefrontal cortex (PFC) between the two groups and reduce the influence of the severity of depression. Pearson correlation coeffcients were calculated to examine the relationship between the oxy-Hb changes, with the severity of insomnia and depressive symptoms assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD).Results: The number of words generated during the VFT in CID groups showed no statistical differences with healthy controls. CID patients showed hypoactivation in the PFC during the cognitive task. In addition, we found that the function of left orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) during the VFT was significantly negatively correlated with the PSQI scores and the function of right dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) was significantly negatively correlated with the HAMD scores.Conclusion: The present study detected dysfunctions in PFC in spite of intact performance which indicates the role of PFC in the neurophysiological underpinnings. Left OFC function is associated with insomnia symptoms and right DLPFC function is associated with depressive symptoms. Abstract: The development of biohydrogen is crucial for achieving a sustainable and eco-friendly society and reducing dependence on traditional fossil fuels. Biohydrogen production, storage, and delivery are three essential components of the biohydrogen economy. Strategies like dark fermentation and photo-fermentation have been widely studied for biohydrogen production. At the same time, hydrogen storage options have also been explored, including compressed, liquid, and material-based hydrogen. However, many of the technologies aimed at developing the biohydrogen economy are still immature, and the current biohydrogen economy is facing challenges like low biohydrogen production, high hydrogen storage costs, and unsatisfactory hydrogen delivery efficiency. Therefore, this review aims to present a comprehensive overview of the latest technologies for biohydrogen production, storage, and delivery, while highlighting their respective benefits and drawbacks. Furthermore, the review proposes perspectives on the challenges facing current biohydrogen production, storage, and delivery technologies, as well as suggesting further research directions to improve these technologies for widespread implementation of the biohydrogen economy.

10. Aquatic photolysis of high-risk chemicals of emerging concern from secondary effluent mediated by sunlight irradiation for ecological safety and the enhanced methods.

Abstract: Natural sunlight can reduce the chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) and biological effects from the discharged domestic wastewater. But the aquatic photolysis and biotoxic variations of specific CECs detected in secondary effluent (SE) were not clear. In this study, 29 CECs were detected in the SE, and 13 medium- and high-risk CECs were identified as target chemicals based on their ecological risk assessment. To comprehensively explore the photolysis properties of the identified target chemicals, the direct and self-sensitized photodegradation of the target chemicals, even the indirect photodegradation in the mixture, were investigated and compared with these photodegradation in the SE. Of the 13 target chemicals, only five chemicals (including dichlorvos (DDVP), mefenamic acid (MEF), diphenhydramine hydrochloride (DPH), chlorpyrifos (CPF), and imidacloprid (IMI)) underwent direct and self-sensitized photodegradation processes. The removal of DDVP, MEF, and DPH was attributed to self-sensitized photodegradation, which was mainly mediated by •OH; CPF and IMI primarily relied on direct photodegradation. Synergistic and/or antagonistic actions that occurred in the mixture improved/decreased the rate constants of five photodegradable target chemicals. Meanwhile, the biotoxicities (acute toxicity and genotoxicity) of the target chemicals (including individual chemicals and the mixture) were significantly reduced, which can explain the reduction of biotoxicities from SE. For the two refractory high-risk chemicals, atrazine (ATZ) and carbendazim (MBC), algae-derived intracellular dissolved organic matter (IOM) on ATZ, and IOM and extracellular dissolved organic matter (EOM) on MBC had slightly promotion for their photodegradation; while peroxysulfate, and peroxymonosulfate served as sensitizers were activated by natural sunlight and effectively improved their photodegradation rate, and then reduced their biotoxicities. 12. Capability of shallow open-water unit for emerging contaminants attenuation and ecological safety improvement in a treated effluent polishing process

Abstract: Nature-based solutions of polishing treated effluent are drawing increased attention because of their potential to mitigate ecological risks, and the shallow open water unit (SOWU) process is one of the most promising options. In this study, a pilot experiment was conducted to assess the efficiency of SOWU for effluent quality polishing in a municipal wastewater treatment plant targeting 33 residual emerging contaminants (ECs) that were categorized into six groups, namely pharmaceuticals, sunscreens, bactericides, pesticides, flame retardants and phenols. In the 14-day monitoring period, each of the ECs decayed following a first order reaction, and about 61 % total ECs removal was achieved, indicating the remarkable photolysis effect of the SOWU under natural conditions. The significant removal of ECs, especially the very high removals of pharmaceuticals (76 %) and sunscreens (77 %), was associated with the attenuation of both the acute luminescent bacterial toxicity and genotoxicity. From the linear relationship between the acute toxicity and chromophoric dissolved organic matter and that between genotoxicity and UV absorbance at 254 nm, it was likely that the attenuation of biotoxicities resulted from the decay of chromophoric and aromatic compounds. By analyzing several reactive species, the excellent photoreactivity of the SOWU was further identified.

13. Investigation and assessment of micropollutants and associated biological effects in wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract: Currently, the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) attempt to achieve the shifting from general pollution parameters control to reduction of organic micropollutants discharge. However, they have not been able to satisfy the increasing ecological safety needs. In this study, the removal of micropollutants was investigated, and the ecological safety was assessed for a local WWTP. Although the total concentration of 31 micropollutants detected was reduced by 83% using the traditional biological treatment processes, the results did not reflect chemicals that had poor removal efficiencies and low concentrations. Of the five categories of micropollutants, herbicides, insecticides, and bactericides were difficult to remove, pharmaceuticals and UV filters were effectively eliminated. The specific photosynthesis inhibition effect and non-specific bioluminescence inhibition effect from wastewater were detected and evaluated using hazardous concentration where 5% of aquatic organisms are affected. The photosynthesis inhibition effect from wastewater in the WWTP was negligible, even the untreated raw wastewater. However, the bioluminescence inhibition effect from wastewater which was defined as the priority biological effect, posed potential ecological risk. To decrease non-specific biological effects, especially of macromolecular dissolved organic matter, overall pollutant reduction strategy is necessary. Meanwhile, the ozonation process was used to further decrease the bioluminescence inhibition effects from the secondary effluent; ≥ 0.34 g O3/g DOC of ozone dose was recommended for micropollutants elimination control and ecological safety.

14. Effects of Environmental Factors on Seed Germination and Emergence of Velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti)

Abstract: Velvetleaf, an annual broadleaf weed, is a common and troublesome weed of cropping systems worldwide. Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of environmental factors on germination and emergence of velvetleaf. Seeds germinated over a range of constant temperatures from 10 to 40 oC regardless of light conditions, but no germination occurred at temperature below 5 oC and beyond 50 oC. Seeds germinated at alternating temperature regimes of 15/5 to 40/30 oC, with maximum germination (>90%) at alternating temperatures of 40/30 oC. Germination was sensitive to water stress, and only 0.4% of the seeds germinated at the osmotic potential of -0.4 MPa. There was no germination at ? 0.6 MPa. Moreover, germination was reduced by saline and alkaline stresses and no germination occurred at ³ 150 mM NaCl or ³ 200 mM NaHCO3 concentrations. However, pH values from 5 to 9 had no effect on seed germination. Seedling emergence was significantly affected by burial depth and maximum emergence (78.1-85.6%) occurred at the 1-4 cm depth. The results of this study have contributed to our understanding of the germination and emergence of velvetleaf and should enhance our ability to improve control strategies in cropping systems in central China. RESUMO: O malvão, planta daninha anual de folha larga, é uma espécie invasora comum e problemática para os sistemas de cultivo no mundo todo. Foram conduzidos experimentos em laboratório e em campo para determinar os efeitos de fatores ambientais sobre a germinação e a emergência do malvão. Foi observada a germinação de sementes em temperaturas constantes, que variaram entre 10 e 40 oC, independentemente das condições de luminosidade, mas não houve germinação em temperaturas menores que 5 oC e maiores que 50 oC. A germinação das sementes ocorreu em regimes alternados de temperatura de 15/5 oC a 40/30 oC, com máxima germinação (>90%) em temperaturas alternadas de 40/30 oC. A germinação foi sensível ao estresse hídrico, e apenas 0,4% das sementes germinaram no potencial osmótico de -0,4 MPa. Nenhuma germinação foi observada no potencial osmótico ? -0,6 MPa. Além disso, a germinação foi reduzida por estresse salino e alcalino e não ocorreu nas concentrações ³ 150 mM de NaCl ou ³ 200 mM de NaHCO3. No entanto, os valores de pH entre 5 e 9 não tiveram nenhum efeito sobre a germinação das sementes. 16. The treatability of trace organic pollutants in WWTP effluent and associated biotoxicity reduction by advanced treatment processes for effluent quality improvement

Abstract: © 2019 Elsevier Ltd As increasing attention is paid to surface water protection, there has been demand for improvements of domestic wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent. This has led to the application of many different advanced treatment processes (ATPs). In this study, the treatability of trace organic pollutants in secondary effluent (SE) and associated biotoxicity reduction by four types of ATPs, including coagulation, granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption, ultraviolet (UV) photolysis and photocatalysis, and ozonation, were investigated at the bench-scale. The ATPs showed different removal capacity for the 48 chemicals, which were classified into seven categories. EDCs, herbicides, bactericides and pharmaceuticals were readily degraded, and insecticides, flame retardants, and UV filters were relatively resistant to removal. During these processes, the efficiency of the ATPs in reducing four biological effects were investigated. Of the four biological effects, the estrogenic activity from SE was not detected using the yeast estrogen screen. In contrast with genotoxicity and photosynthesis inhibition, bacterial cytotoxicity posed by SE was the most difficult biological effect to reduce with these ATPs. GAC adsorption and ozonation were the most robust treatment processes for reducing the three detected biotoxicities. UV photolysis and photocatalysis showed comparable efficiencies for the reduction of genotoxicity and photosynthesis inhibition. However, coagulation only performed well in genotoxicity reduction. The effect-based trigger values for the four bioassays, that were derived from the existing environmental quality standards and from HC5 (hazardous concentration for 5% of aquatic organisms), were all used to select and optimize these ATPs for ecological safety. Conducting ATPs in more appropriate ways could eliminate the negative effects of WWTP effluent on receiving water bodies.

18. Micropollutants removal and health risk reduction in a water reclamation and ecological reuse system

Abstract: © 2018 Elsevier Ltd As reclaimed water use is increasing, its safety attracts growing attention, particularly with respect to the health risks associated with the wide range of micropollutants found in the reclaimed water. In this study, sophisticated analysis was conducted for water samples from a water reclamation and ecological reuse system where domestic wastewater was treated using an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic unit followed by a membrane bioreactor (A2O-MBR), and the reclaimed water was used for replenishing a landscape lake. A total of 58 organic micropollutants were detected in the system, consisting of 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 16 phenols, 3 pesticides, and 26 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). After treatment by the A2O-MBR process, effective removal of pesticides and phenols was achieved, while when the reclaimed water entered the landscape lake, PPCPs were further removed. From the physicochemical properties of micropollutants, it could be inferred that phenols and dichlorphos (the only pesticide with considerable concentration in the influent) would have been mainly removed by biodegradation and/or volatilization in the biological treatment process. Additionally, it is probable that sludge adsorption also contributed to the removal of dichlorphos. For the predominant PPCP removal in the landscape lake, various actions, such as adsorption, biodegradation, photolysis, and ecologically mediated processes (via aquatic plants and animals), would have played significant roles. However, according to their logKoc, logKow and logD (pH = 8) values, it could be concluded that adsorption by suspended solids might be an important action. Although carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks associated with all the detected micropollutants were at negligible levels, the hazard quotients (HQs) of PPCPs accounted for 92.03%–97.23% of the HQTotal. Abstract: WOS: 000389144400002, By analyzing 2.93 fb(-1) data collected at the center-of-mass energy root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction of the semileptonic decay D+ -> (K) over bar (0)e(+)nu(e) to be B(D (+) -> (K) over bar (0)e(+)nu(e)) = (8.59 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.21)% using (K) over bar (0) -> K-S(0) -> pi(0) pi(0), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Abstract: WOS: 000368783600015, By analyzing a data set of 2.92 fb(-1) of e(+) e(-) collision data taken at root s = 3.773 GeVand 106.41 x 10(6) psi(3686) decays taken at root s = 3.686 GeVwith the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the branching fraction and the partial decay width for psi(3770)->gamma chi c0 to be B(psi(3770)->gamma chi c0) = (6.88 +/- 0.28 +/- 0.67) x 10(-3) and Gamma[psi(3770)->gamma chi c0] = (187 +/- 8 +/- 19) keV, respectively. Abstract: WOS: 000368783600087, We extract the e(+) e(-) -> pi(+) pi(-) cross section in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV, exploiting the method of initial state radiation. A data set with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb(-1) taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider is used. The cross section is measured with a systematic uncertainty of 0.9%. We extract the pion form factor vertical bar F pi vertical bar(2) as well as the contribution of the measured cross section to the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to (g - 2)(mu). We find this value to be a(mu)(pi pi,LO) (600-900 MeV) = (368.2 +/- 2.5(stat)+/- 3.3(sys)).10(-10), which is between the corresponding values using the BaBar or KLOE data. (C) 2015 The Authors. Abstract: The disappearance of reactor $\bar{\nu}_e$ observed by the Daya Bay experiment is examined in the framework of a model in which the neutrino is described by a wave packet with a relative intrinsic momentum dispersion $\sigma_\text{rel}$. Three pairs of nuclear reactors and eight antineutrino detectors, each with good energy resolution, distributed among three experimental halls, supply a high-statistics sample of $\bar{\nu}_e$ acquired at nine different baselines. This provides a unique platform to test the effects which arise from the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation. The modified survival probability formula was used to fit Daya Bay data, providing the first experimental limits: $2.38 \cdot 10^{-17} < \sigma_{\rm rel} < 0.23$. Treating the dimensions of the reactor cores and detectors as constraints, the limits are improved: $10^{-14} \lesssim \sigma_{\rm rel} < 0.23$, and an upper limit of $\sigma_{\rm rel} <0.20$ is obtained. All limits correspond to a 95\% C.L. Furthermore, the effect due to the wave packet nature of neutrino oscillation is found to be insignificant for reactor antineutrinos detected by the Daya Bay experiment thus ensuring an unbiased measurement of the oscillation parameters $\sin^22\theta_{13}$ and $\Delta m^2_{32}$ within the plane wave model.

25. Function of a landscape lake in the reduction of biotoxicity related to trace organic chemicals from reclaimed water

Abstract: © 2016 The storage of water in a landscape lake can act as a buffer zone between reclaimed water production and reuse, but there is still uncertainty about the variation of water quality and toxic effects during the open-storage process. In this study, long-term sample collection, chemical analyses and biotoxicity assessments were conducted on reclaimed water before and after open storage in a landscape lake. The organic contents, in terms of chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon, were found to be slightly higher in the lake water than that in the reclaimed water, but substantial reduction of the total concentration of 52 trace organic chemicals was obtained and microorganism toxicity, phytotoxicity, aquatic vertebrate toxicity and genotoxicity, were significantly weakened after open storage. Furthermore, the total risk quotient (RQTotal) decreased from 5.12 (potential ecological risk level) in the reclaimed water to 0.18 (negligible ecological risk level) in the lake water. The removal of chlorpyrifos, dichlorphos and tetracycline was identified as the main reason for biotoxicity reduction after open storage. The seminatural environment of the landscape lake would have provided a favorable condition for the decay of toxic trace organic chemicals so that the stored water turned to be safer for further reuse.

Abstract: The process psi(3686) -> pi(0)h(c), h(c) -> gamma eta(c) has been studied with a data sample of 106 +/- 4 million Psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The mass and width of the P-wave charmonium spin-singlet state h(c)(P-1(1)) are determined by simultaneously fitting distributions of the pi(0) recoil mass for 16 exclusive eta(c) decay modes. The results, M(h(c)) 3525.31 +/- 0.11(stat) +/- 0.14(syst) MeV/c(2) and Gamma(h(c)) = 0.70 +/- 0.28 +/- 0.22 MeV, are consistent with and more precise than previous measurements. We also determine the branching ratios for the 16 exclusive eta(c) decay modes, five of which have not been measured previously. New measurements of the eta(c) line- shape parameters in the E1 transition h(c) -> gamma eta(c) are made by selecting candidates in the h(c) signal sample and simultaneously fitting the hadronic mass spectra for the 16 eta(c) decay channels. The resulting eta(c) mass and width values are M(eta(c)) = 2984.49 +/- 1.16 +/- 0.52 MeV/c(2) and Gamma(eta(c)) 36.4 +/- 3.2 +/- 1.7 MeV. Abstract: Adiantum is a genus of ca. 200 species in the family Adiantaceae, distributed extensively across the world from cool temperate zones to hot tropical regions. A lot of Adiantum species have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to cure human and animal diseases including relief of internal heat or fever, enhancement of urination, removal of urinary calculus, and sundry other curative claims. Chemical studies have shown the presence of various classes of compounds, the main ones being triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenyl propanoids, steroids, alicyclic acids, lipids and long-chain compounds. The extract of this genus as well as pure compounds isolated from it have been demonstrated to possess multiple pharmacological activities such as analgesic, antinociceptive, anti-implantation, and antimicrobial activities. In this review, we have addressed the phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of the Adiantum species in order to collate existing information on this plant as well as highlight its multi-activity properties as a medicinal agent.Keywords: Adiantum species, Adiantaceae, Phytochemical constituents, Pharmacological activities.

29. Bioassay based luminescent bacteria: Interferences, improvements, and applications

Abstract: Due to the merits of being time-saving, cost effective and simple operation, the luminescent bacteria toxicity assay (LBTA) has been widely used for environmental pollution monitoring. Based on numerous studies since 2007, this critical review aims to give an overview on the mechanisms, developments and applications of LBTA. Firstly, based on the introduction of the mechanisms of LBTA, this review shows the interferences from the characteristics of testing samples (such as inorganic nutrients, color, turbidity) and summarizes the improvements on pretreatment method, test methods and test systems in recent years. Regarding the factors that affect the toxicity prediction of single chemicals, the correlation between the toxicity index expressed as median effective concentration (EC50) and characters (such as Kow, the alkyl chain length, the anion and the cation) of known chemicals, especially the emerging ionic liquids (ILs), were given an in-depth discussion. The models for predicting the joint effect of mixtures to luminescent bacteria were also presented. For the factors that affect the toxicity of actual waters, the correlation of toxicity of actual samples to luminescent bacteria and their conventional indexes were discussed. Comparing the sensitivity of the LBTA with other bioassays could indicate the feasibility of the LBTA applied on specific samples. The summary on the application of LBTA to environmental samples has been made to find the future research direction. © 2013.

30. Reverse osmosis pretreatment method for toxicity assessment of domestic wastewater using Vibrio qinghaiensis sp.-Q67

Abstract: Luminescent bacterial test is a fast and sensitive method for acute toxicity assessment of water and wastewater. In this study, an improved toxicity testing method was developed using the freshwater luminescent bacteria Vibrio qinghaiensis sp.-Q67 that involved pretreatment of water samples with reverse osmosis (RO) to eliminate the interferences caused by nutrients in concentrated samples and to improve the reliability and sensitivity of the analysis. Because water samples contain low concentrations of several target toxic substances, rapid acute toxicity testing method that is commonly employed does not achieve enough sensitivity. The proposed RO pretreatment could effectively enrich organic and inorganic substances in water samples to enable a more effective and sensitive toxicity evaluation. The kinetic characteristics of toxicity of raw sewage and secondary effluent were evaluated based on the relative luminescence unit (RLU) curves and time-concentration-effect surfaces. It was observed that when the exposure time was prolonged to 8-h or longer, the bacteria reached the logarithmic growth stage. Hence, the stimulating effects of the coexisting ions (such as Na+, K+, NO3-) in the concentrated samples could be well eliminated. A 10-h exposure time in proposed Q67 test was found to quantitatively evaluate the toxicity of the organic and inorganic pollutants in the RO-concentrated samples. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

Abstract: Ecotoxicity assessment using luminescent bacteria has been wildly used because it is rapid, sensitive and cost effective for screening water and wastewater quality. This mini-review focused on the application of Vibrio qinghaiensis sp. Q67 (abbreviated as Q67), a natural freshwater luminescent bacteria strain discovered in China. The characteristics of the bioassay using Q67 were firstly reviewed with comparison to that using the Vibrio fischeri, a widely used marine luminescent bacteria strain. In addition to the principal of bioassay using luminescent bacteria, attention was paid to the applications of Q67 to the toxicity assessment of organic and inorganic substances, and practical water samples. With its advantage for direct evaluation of freshwater samples without salt addition, Q67 toxicity test can be a good alternative of Vibrio fischeri for toxicological study of environmental waters.

34. Personalised modified osteotomy using computer-aided design-rapid prototyping to correct thoracic deformities.

Abstract: The correction of severe thoracic deformities is challenging. However, the usual imaging modalities are not sufficient for performing the surgery. Our objective was to describe the procedure and results of posterior modified wedge osteotomy aided by the techniques of computer-aided design-rapid prototyping (CAD-RP) to correct thoracic deformities. Twenty-one patients with thoracic deformities (eight males; 13 females) formed the study group. All patients underwent computed tomography (CT) scanning and CAD-RP, and a model of thoracic deformities and navigation templates of pedicles were created for each patient and used to analyse the spinal deformities and serve as anatomical reference. Aided by these models, personalised modified wedge osteotomy combining the eggshell technique and posterior vertebral column resection was performed. Using CAD-RP improved the safety and accuracy of surgery and screw placement in the 21 patients in whom 41 vertebrae were removed and 216 pedicle screws were placed. The average operation time was 260 (200-420) min, with an average blood loss of 1,900 ml (range 800-3560 ml). The percentage of deformity correction was 56.3% (from 72.1° to 31.5°) in the coronal plane and 60.4% (from 81.6° to 32.3°) in the sagittal plane. No patient had serious complications or implant failure. Personalised single-stage posterior modified wedge osteotomy is an effective procedure for treating thoracic deformities. 35. C1 pedicle screws versus C1 lateral mass screws: comparisons of pullout strengths and biomechanical stabilities.

Abstract: Study Design: In vitro biomechanical study. Objective: To compare the pullout strengths and the biomechanical stabilities afforded by C1 lateral mass screws and C1 pedicle screws using bicortical and unicortical fixation techniques. Summary Of Background Data: Posterior screw fixation techniques in the atlas including C1 lateral mass screw and C1 pedicle screw. The shortcomings of C1 lateral mass screw technique and potential risks of bicortical fixation method were recently described; C1 pedicle screw technique with unicortical fixation might overcome these anatomic and clinical drawbacks. However, it is unknown whether the biomechanical characteristics of unicortical C1 pedicle screw are comparable with that of bicortical C1 lateral mass screw. METHODS.: Bicortical or unicortical C1 pedicle screws and C1 lateral mass screws were inserted into 12 adult fresh human C1 specimens. Pullout strength was evaluated using a material testing machine. The construct's stability of bicortical C1 lateral mass screws or unicortical C1 pedicle screws incorporating unicortical C2 pedicle screws was compared with bilateral transarticular screws using another 6 fresh cervical cadaver spines. Pullout strength and biomechanical stability differences were compared statistically. Results: Bicortical C1 pedicle screws provided the biggest pullout strength (1757.0 +/- 318.7 N) of all 4 methods, whereas unicortical C1 lateral mass screws provided the weakest(794.5 +/- 314.8 N). However, there were no statistically significant differences between bicortical C1 lateral mass screws (1243.8 +/- 350.0 N) and unicortical C1 pedicle screws (1192.5 +/- 172.6 N). Furthermore, there was no statistically significant difference of biomechanical construct stability between unicortical C1 pedicle screw-rod constructs and bicortical C1 lateral mass screw-rod constructs. Conclusion: C1 pedicle screws are stiffer than C1 lateral mass screws. Unicortical C1 pedicle screw provided the same pullout resistance and three-dimensional stability as bicortical C1 lateral mass fixation. Based on the concentration data of eight water-soluble ions, EC, and OC the source analysis was performed using the positive definite matrix factorization model, backward trajectory, and potential source contribution factor （PSCF） analysis. The results showed that in recent years, the annual and autumn-winter concentrations of PM 2.5 showed an overall decreasing trend, and the concentrations of water-soluble ions and total carbon decreased stage by stage during the three stages of sampling. The concentration in the third stage （52.70 μg·m -3 and 17.17 μg·m -3 ） decreased by 34.31% and 63.38% compared with that in the first stage （80.23 μg·m -3 and 46.89 μg·m -3 ）, respectively. The concentration of SNA in the three stages accounted for 46.79%, 48.86%, and 43.22% of the total concentration of PM 2.5 , respectively. The proportion of SOC in PM 2.5 was 12.43%, 14.05%, and 6.81%, all of which first increased and then decreased. The mean of SOR in the three stages was 0.34, 0.37, and 0.36, respectively, and NOR was 0.23, 0.28, and 0.28, indicating that the secondary transformation degree was the highest during the Blue Sky Defense War. From the perspective of pollutant sources, the main sources of PM 2.5 in Handan City were secondary, combustion sources, industrial sources, traffic sources, and dust sources. During the Blue Sky Defense War, the primary emissions decreased （mainly combustion sources and industrial sources）； afterward, the end of the primary emissions increased, of which the contribution rate of industrial sources increased from 12.17% to 20.20%. Moreover, the backward trajectory clustering analysis showed that the contribution rate of secondary sources in the second stage was significantly higher than that in other stages, especially the airflow from Shandong and Shanxi. The analysis of potential sources showed that the regions with high WPSCF values in the three stages were mainly concentrated in the south of Hebei and the north of Henan. The difference was that the potential source areas in the third stage shifted from the central part of Shanxi to the south compared with the first stage. This work confirms that the environmental benefits of the Blue Sky Defense War are obvious. With the development of the Blue Sky Defense War, the contribution of secondary components is prominent. After the Blue Sky Defense War, the proportion of secondary components decreased, the influence of primary components increased, and the control of direct emissions should be strengthened.

37. Enhancing testing efficacy of high-density SNP microarrays to distinguish pedigrees belonging to the same kinship class.

Abstract: Kinship testing, which involves genotyping genetic markers and comparing their profiles between individuals, holds significant applications in forensic science. However, the prevalent use of independent markers often lacks the discriminatory power to distinguish pedigrees belong to the same kinship class. While numerous studies have attempted to address this challenge through diverse approaches, the testing efficacy of high-density SNP microarrays in combination with the likelihood approach remains unclear. In this study, we further explored the utilization of linked autosomal SNPs derived from microarrays with the likelihood approach. Several SNP panels with differing numbers of loci were developed and putative pedigrees were constructed to evaluated to test their efficacy in distinguishing second-degree relationships, including grandparent-grandchild, half-siblings, and avuncular. Our findings indicate that the use of high-density SNP microarrays is theoretically feasible for discriminating second-degree relationships, with balanced classification rates ranging from 0.444 to 0.853. Moreover, to optimize the practical effectiveness of discriminating pedigrees belonging to the same kinship class, several other aspects such as adding additional SNPs or an additional relative and examining the effects of genotype errors and population selection were discussed. Our results revealed that the employment of denser marker sets with more accurate genotyping methods may be beneficial. Additionally, the inclusion of additional relatives and the selection of an appropriate reference population also appear to be crucial factors for enhancing the accuracy of kinship testing. Abstract: Five undescribed lignans (1-5), along with sixteen known lignans (6-21), were isolated from the roots of Anthriscus sylvestris using small molecule accurate recognition technology (SMART). The structures of the isolated compounds were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, and the absolute configurations of compounds 3-5 were elucidated by comparison of their calculated and experimental ECD spectra. Compounds 5, 14-15, 19, and 21 exhibited significantly inhibitory effects against hypoxia-stimulated abnormal proliferation of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). 39. Mechanism of S100A9-mediated astrocyte activation via TLR4/NF-κB in Parkinson's disease.

Abstract: Astrocyte-mediated neuroinflammation plays a key role in Parkinson's disease (PD) progression. The proinflammatory protein S100A9 is linked to various neurodegenerative diseases, but its involvement in astrocyte activation in PD remains unclear. Here, we investigate the role of S100A9 in astrocyte-mediated neuroinflammation in PD. C57BL/6J mice were intraperitoneally injected with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP; 15 mg/kg four times daily) and subsequently treated with Paquinimod, a S100A9 inhibitor (7 mg/kg, once daily for 7 days, totaling 8 doses). We observed an abnormal increase in S100A9 protein expression and a rise in S100A9-positive cells in the striatum of PD mice. Paquinimod treatment significantly improved behavioral deficits (pole test, rotarod test, traction test, and open field tests), prevented the reduction in striatal tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) protein and the loss of dopaminergic neurons (TH + ) in the substantia nigra (SN) in PD mice. Interestingly, S100A9 was predominantly expressed in astrocytes (GFAP + S100A9 + cells) rather than in neurons or microglia, and its inhibition significantly reduced astrocyte activation (GFAP + cells), reversed A1 astrocyte gene upregulation (H2-D1, C3, Serping1), and increased A2 astrocyte gene expression (Emp1, Ptx3, S100a10). Moreover, S100A9 inhibition also reduced the expression of inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α) and suppressed the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. In vitro, TLR4/NF-κB inhibitors mitigated inflammation and A1/A2 polarization of astrocytic MA cells induced by recombinant S100A9 (rS100A9). 40. Host-Guest Interactions of Metal-Organic Framework Enable Highly Conductive Quasi-Solid-State Electrolytes for Li-CO 2 Batteries.

Abstract: High-energy lithium (Li)-based batteries, especially rechargeable Li-CO 2 batteries with CO 2 fixation capability and high energy density, are desirable for electrified transportation and other applications. However, the challenges of poor stability, low energy efficiency, and leakage of liquid electrolytes hinder the development of Li-CO 2 batteries. Herein, a highly conductive and stable metal - organic framework-encapsulated ionic liquid (IL@MOF) electrolyte system is developed for quasi-solid-state Li-CO 2 batteries. Benefiting from the host-guest interaction of MOFs with open micromesopores and internal IL, the optimized IL@MOF electrolytes exhibit a high ionic conductivity of 1.03 mS cm -1 and a high transference number of 0.80 at room temperature. The IL@MOF electrolytes also feature a wide electrochemical stability window (4.71 V versus Li + /Li) and a wide working temperature (-60 °C ∼ 150 °C). The IL@MOF electrolytes also enable Li + and electrons transport in the carbon nanotubes-IL@MOF (CNT-IL@MOF) solid cathodes in quasi-solid-state Li-CO 2 batteries, delivering a high specific capacity of 13,978 mAh g -1 (50 mA g -1 ), a long cycle life of 441 cycles (500 mA g -1 and 1000 mAh g -1 ), and a wide operation temperature of -60 to 150 °C. The proposed MOF-encapsulated IL electrolyte system presents a powerful strategy for developing high-energy and highly safe quasi-solid-state batteries.

Abstract: We report the precise measurements of the cross section of e^{+}e^{-}→hadrons at center-of-mass energies from 3.645 to 3.871 GeV. We thereby perform the most precise study of the cross sections and find a complex system composed of three resonances of R(3760), R(3780), and R(3810). For the first time, we measure the R(3810) electronic width to be (19.4±7.4±12.1) eV. For the R(3760) resonance, we measure the mass to be (3751.9±3.8±2.8) MeV/c^{2}, the total width to be (32.8±5.8±8.7) MeV, and the electronic width to be (184±75±86) eV. For the R(3780) resonance, we measure its mass to be (3778.7±0.5±0.3) MeV/c^{2}, total width to be (20.3±0.8±1.7) MeV, and electronic width to be (265±67±83) eV. Forty-seven years ago, the ψ(3770) resonance was discovered, and was subsequently interpreted as the 1^{3}D_{1}-wave dominant state of charmonium. However, our analysis of the total-hadron cross sections indicates that the ψ(3770) is not a single state, but a complex system composed of the R(3760), R(3780), and R(3810) resonances. Among these, we interpret the R(3780) is a resonance dominated by the 1^{3}D_{1} charmonium state.

Abstract: Objective: Hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation (HSR) cause inflammatory responses in the gastrointestinal tract and is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality rates. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), a gasotransmitter with pleiotropic activity, exhibits anti-inflammatory benefits at physiological levels. However, deleterious effects are observed when its concentration increases. In this investigation, we employed a mouse model of HSR to examine the effects of an H 2 S scavenger on the gastrointestinal tract and brain, with emphasis on N-Methyl-d-Aspartate (NMDA) receptor function., Methods: Mice were immediately administered dl-propargylglycine (PAG) intragastrically as an H 2 S scavenger after HSR exposure. The O-maze and buried beads tests were used to assess compulsive- and anxiety-like behaviors. Pathological changes in the intestine were evaluated at 24 and 30 days after HSR. Subsequently, at 30 days after HSR, we examined electrophysiological and pathological changes in the amygdala., Results: Within 24 h of HSR exposure, animals treated with PAG showed significantly lower colonic injury. Additionally, compared to the HSR-treated mice 30 days after HSR, the PAG-treated mice displayed reduced buried beads, increased open-arm time, lower blood levels of Diamine Oxidase (DAO) and considerably improved ZO-1 intensity, a stronger association between the delta rhythm phase and beta activity amplitude, and lower neuroinflammatory response in the amygdala. Abstract: Nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) is a key inducible transcription factor that controls a large number of genes involved in inflammatory and immune processes. The entire inflammation-mediated process uses NF-κB as a hub, and inflammatory gene transcription and expression can be decreased by blocking the NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby reducing inflammatory damage. Therefore, the inhibition of this pathway is an important therapeutic target for the treatment of various types of inflammation. Here, we designed and synthesized 27 mollugin derivatives and evaluated the anti-inflammatory activity against NF-κB transcription. Most of the compounds exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity, and compound 5k was the most potent with 81.77% inhibition after intraperitoneal administration, which was significantly more potent than mollugin (49.72%), ibuprofen (47.51%), and mesalazine (47.24%). Investigation of the mechanism of action indicated that 5k down-regulated NF-κB expression, possibly by suppressing LPS-induced expression of the p65 protein. ADMET prediction analysis indicated that compounds 5h and 5k showed good pharmacokinetic properties. The relationship between the structures of the synthesized compounds and the NF-κB inhibitory activity was rationalized using molecular docking simulation experiments. Abstract: Atrazine (ATZ), a widely used triazine herbicide, has been shown to disrupt reproductive development in organisms. Melatonin (MLT) is a natural hormone and has been shown to have strong antioxidant properties. Due to its lipophilicity, it can cross biological barriers freely and act on germ cells directly. However, the mechanism through which melatonin affects atrazine-induced damage to male sperm cells remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ATZ on spermatocyte development and to elucidate MLT's role in preventing ATZ-induced spermatogenesis failure. Pubertal mice were randomly divided into four groups: blank control group (Con), 5 mg/kg melatonin group (MLT), 170 mg/kg atrazine group (ATZ), and ATZ + MLT group. GC-1 cell culture was employed to access the in vitro effects of MLT and ATZ on spermatogonia. The results indicate that atrazine affected protein and metabolite composition, and reduced sperm viability, sperm motility (VAP, VSL and VCL) and levels of proteins related to spermatogenesis function in the mice testis. Melatonin alleviated the development of cellular DNA damage and necroptosis caused by atrazine both in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, we proposed that it was GC-1 cells developing necroptosis, but not other cell types in the testis. In conclusion, this study suggests that atrazine disrupts the development process, causing DNA damage in spermatozoa during spermatogenesis. Additionally, ATZ-induced necroptosis specifically targets spermatogenic cells. Notably, melatonin alleviates atrazine-induced necroptosis and DNA damage in spermatogenic cells. Abstract: Tumor immunotherapy includes bispecific antibodies (BsAbs), immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), vaccines, and adoptive cell immunotherapy. BsAbs belong to the family of antibodies that can specifically target two or more different antigens and are a promising option for tumor immunotherapy. Immune checkpoints are antibodies targeting PD-1, PD-L1, and CTLA4 and have demonstrated remarkable therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of hematological and solid tumors, whose combination therapies have been shown to synergistically enhance the antitumor effects of BsAbs. In addition, the clinical efficacy of existing monoclonal antibodies targeting PD-1 (e.g., ipilimumab, nivolumab, pembrolizumab, and cemiplimab) and PD-L1 (e.g., atezolizumab, avelumab, and durvalumab) could also be enhanced by conjugation to small drugs as antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). Abstract: Six undescribed compounds (1-6) and twenty-three known analogues (7-29) were isolated from the fresh roots of Rehmannia glutinosa. The structures of the compounds (1-29) were established through the application of spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 3, 4, 6, 8, 13, 18, 21, 22, 25, and 28 exhibited excellent anti-pulmonary fibrosis activity. Abstract: Ischemic stroke ranks among the leading causes of death and disability in humans and is accompanied by motor and cognitive impairment. However, the precise mechanisms underlying injury after stroke and effective treatment strategies require further investigation. Peroxiredoxin-1 (PRDX1) triggers an extensive inflammatory cascade that plays a pivotal role in the pathology of ischemic stroke, resulting in severe brain damage from activated microglia. In the present study, we used molecular dynamics simulation and nuclear magnetic resonance to detect the interaction between PRDX1 and a specific interfering peptide. We used behavioral, morphological, and molecular experimental methods to demonstrate the effect of PRDX1-peptide on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) in mice and to investigate the related mechanism. We found that PRDX1-peptide bound specifically to PRDX1 and improved motor and cognitive functions in I/R mice. In addition, pretreatment with PRDX1-peptide reduced the infarct area and decreased the number of apoptotic cells in the penumbra. Furthermore, PRDX1-peptide inhibited microglial activation and downregulated proinflammatory cytokines including IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α through inhibition of the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby attenuating ischemic brain injury. Our findings clarify the precise mechanism underlying PRDX1-induced inflammation after ischemic stroke and suggest that the PRDX1-peptide can significantly alleviate the postischemic inflammatory response by interfering with PRDX1 amino acids 70-90 and thereby inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. Abstract: The hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) pathway has been implicated in tumor angiogenesis, growth, and metastasis. Therefore, the inhibition of this pathway is an important therapeutic target for cancer. Thiazole derivatives have been reported to have diverse biological activities, especially in terms of anti-tumor. Consequently, we hypothesized that the introduction of a thiazole functional group in PD was likely to improve the biological potency. Here, three series of PD derivatives containing a thiazole moiety were synthesized, including (a) sulfonyl-containing thiazole derivatives (5 a-l), (b) urea-containing thiazole derivatives (7 a-i), and (c) thiourea-containing thiazole derivatives (9 a-i), and evaluated for HIF-1α inhibitory activity using a Hep3B cell-based luciferase reporter assay. The results showed that about 1/3 of the target compounds showed moderate or strong HIF-1α inhibitory activity, among which compounds 5 d and 7 b showed the strongest inhibitory activity with IC 50 values of 17.37 and 6.42 μM, respectively, and did not show any significant cytotoxicity. Western blot assay results indicated that these two compounds exhibited more potent inhibition, compared with panaxadiol, of the expression of HIF-1α protein in Hep3B cells at a concentration of 50 μM. Molecular docking experiments were also performed to investigate the structure-activity relationship. 50. Vitrification cryo-foil method for shoot tip cryopreservation and virus eradication in apple.

Abstract: Establishment of a new method for improved shoot tip cryopreservation is crucial to facilitate the long-term preservation of plant germplasm as well as the use of cryotherapy for pathogen eradication. The present study reported a vitrification (V) cryo-foil method for shoot tip cryopreservation and virus eradication in apple. Shoot tip regrowth levels after cryopreservation were comparable among V cryo-foil (53 %), V cryo-plate (46 %) and conventional droplet vitrification (Dr-vi, 48 %). The V cryo-foil is more efficient to perform than Dr-vi as more shoot tips can be cryopreserved by one person. In the histological study applying an image-overlaying strategy, shoot tips cryopreserved by V cryo-foil showed a higher survival chance in the youngest leaf primordia than in the apical dome. When V cryo-foil was tested for virus eradication, fifty-five percent (55 %) of cryo-derived shoots were free of the apple stem pitting virus (ASPV), while none and less than 10 % were free of the apple stem grooving virus (ASGV) and the apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV), respectively. Thus, these two viruses were efficiently preserved by V cryo-foil cryopreservation.
