Federated learning is a machine learning paradigm that enables decentralized clients to collaboratively learn a shared model while keeping all the training data local. While considerable research has focused on federated image generation, particularly Generative Adversarial Networks, Variational Autoencoders have received less attention. In this paper, we address the challenges of non-IID (independently and identically distributed) data environments featuring multiple groups of images of different types. Specifically, heterogeneous data distributions can lead to difficulties in maintaining a consistent latent space and can also result in local generators with disparate texture features being blended during aggregation. We introduce a novel approach, FissionVAE, which decomposes the latent space and constructs decoder branches tailored to individual client groups. This method allows for customized learning that aligns with the unique data distributions of each group. Additionally, we investigate the incorporation of hierarchical VAE architectures and demonstrate the use of heterogeneous decoder architectures within our model. We also explore strategies for setting the latent prior distributions to enhance the decomposition process. To evaluate our approach, we assemble two composite datasets: the first combines MNIST and FashionMNIST; the second comprises RGB datasets of cartoon and human faces, wild animals, marine vessels, and remote sensing images of Earth. Our experiments demonstrate that FissionVAE greatly improves generation quality on these datasets compared to baseline federated VAE models.

This paper focuses on jailbreaking attacks against large language models (LLMs), eliciting them to generate objectionable content in response to harmful user queries. Unlike previous LLM-jailbreaks that directly orient to LLMs, our approach begins by constructing a multimodal large language model (MLLM) through the incorporation of a visual module into the target LLM. Subsequently, we conduct an efficient MLLM-jailbreak to generate jailbreaking embeddings embJS. Finally, we convert the embJS into text space to facilitate the jailbreaking of the target LLM. Compared to direct LLM-jailbreaking, our approach is more efficient, as MLLMs are more vulnerable to jailbreaking than pure LLM. Additionally, to improve the attack success rate (ASR) of jailbreaking, we propose an image-text semantic matching scheme to identify a suitable initial input. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach surpasses current state-of-the-art methods in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness. Moreover, our approach exhibits superior cross-class jailbreaking capabilities.

Federated Learning (FL) is a widely adopted privacy-preserving machine learning approach where private data remains local, enabling secure computations and the exchange of local model gradients between local clients and third-party parameter servers. However, recent findings reveal that privacy may be compromised and sensitive information potentially recovered from shared gradients. In this study, we offer detailed analysis and a novel perspective on understanding the gradient leakage problem. These theoretical works lead to a new gradient leakage defense technique that secures arbitrary model architectures using a private key-lock module. Only the locked gradient is transmitted to the parameter server for global model aggregation. Our proposed learning method is resistant to gradient leakage attacks, and the key-lock module is designed and trained to ensure that, without the private information of the key-lock module: a) reconstructing private training data from the shared gradient is infeasible; and b) the global model's inference performance is significantly compromised. We discuss the theoretical underpinnings of why gradients can leak private information and provide theoretical proof of our method's effectiveness. Inferring missing links or detecting spurious ones based on observed graphs, known as link prediction, is a long-standing challenge in graph data analysis. With the recent advances in deep learning, graph neural networks have been used for link prediction and have achieved state-of-the-art performance. Nevertheless, existing methods developed for this purpose are typically discriminative, computing features of local subgraphs around two neighboring nodes and predicting potential links between them from the perspective of subgraph classification. In this formalism, the selection of enclosing subgraphs and heuristic structural features for subgraph classification significantly affects the performance of the methods. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a novel and radically different link prediction algorithm based on the network reconstruction theory, called GraphLP. Instead of sampling positive and negative links and heuristically computing the features of their enclosing subgraphs, GraphLP utilizes the feature learning ability of deep-learning models to automatically extract the structural patterns of graphs for link prediction under the assumption that real-world graphs are not locally isolated. Moreover, GraphLP explores high-order connectivity patterns to utilize the hierarchical organizational structures of graphs for link prediction. Our experimental results on all common benchmark datasets from different applications demonstrate that the proposed method consistently outperforms other state-of-the-art methods. Anomaly detection on attributed networks is widely used in online shopping, financial transactions, communication networks, and so on. However, most existing works trying to detect anomalies on attributed networks only consider a single kind of interaction, so they cannot deal with various kinds of interactions on multi-view attributed networks. It remains a challenging task to jointly consider all different kinds of interactions and detect anomalous instances on multi-view attributed networks. In this paper, we propose a graph convolution-based framework, named AnomMAN, to detect Anomaly on Multi-view Attributed Networks. To jointly consider attributes and all kinds of interactions on multi-view attributed networks, we use the attention mechanism to define the importance of all views in networks. Since the low-pass characteristic of graph convolution operation filters out most high-frequency signals (aonmaly signals), it cannot be directly applied to anomaly detection tasks. AnomMAN introduces the graph auto-encoder module to turn the disadvantage of low-pass features into an advantage. Typical machine learning approaches require centralized data for model training, which may not be possible where restrictions on data sharing are in place due to, for instance, privacy and gradient protection. The recently proposed Federated Learning (FL) framework allows learning a shared model collaboratively without data being centralized or shared among data owners. However, we show in this paper that the generalization ability of the joint model is poor on Non-Independent and Non-Identically Distributed (Non-IID) data, particularly when the Federated Averaging (FedAvg) strategy is used due to the weight divergence phenomenon. Hence, we propose a novel boosting algorithm for FL to address both the generalization and gradient leakage issues, as well as achieve faster convergence in gradient-based optimization. In addition, a secure gradient sharing protocol using Homomorphic Encryption (HE) and Differential Privacy (DP) is introduced to defend against gradient leakage attack and avoid pairwise encryption that is not scalable. We demonstrate the proposed Federated Boosting (FedBoosting) method achieves noticeable improvements in both prediction accuracy and run-time efficiency in a visual text recognition task on public benchmark., Comment: The source code can be found at https://github.com/Rand2AI/FedBoosting

We consider the problem of intelligent and efficient task allocation mechanism in large-scale mobile edge computing (MEC), which can reduce delay and energy consumption in a parallel and distributed optimization. In this paper, we study the joint optimization model to consider cooperative task management mechanism among mobile terminals (MT), macro cell base station (MBS), and multiple small cell base station (SBS) for large-scale MEC applications. We propose a parallel multi-block Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) based method to model both requirements of low delay and low energy consumption in the MEC system which formulates the task allocation under those requirements as a nonlinear 0-1 integer programming problem. To solve the optimization problem, we develop an efficient combination of conjugate gradient, Newton and linear search techniques based algorithm with Logarithmic Smoothing (for global variables updating) and the Cyclic Block coordinate Gradient Projection (CBGP, for local variables updating) methods, which can guarantee convergence and reduce computational complexity with a good scalability. Today, we are all threatened by an unprecedented pandemic: COVID-19. How different is it from other coronaviruses? Will it be attenuated or become more virulent? Which animals may be its original host? In this study, we collected and analyzed nearly thirty thousand publicly available complete genome sequences for COVID-19 virus from 79 different countries, the previously known flu-causing coronaviruses (HCov-229E, HCov-OC43, HCov-NL63 and HCov-HKU1) and the lethal, pathogenic viruses, SARS, MERS, Victoria, Lassa, Yamagata, Ebola, and Dengue. We found strong similarities between the current circulating COVID-19 and SARS and MERS, as well as COVID-19 in rhinolophines and pangolins. On the contrary, COVID-19 shares little similarity with the flu-causing coronaviruses and the other known viruses. Strikingly, we observed that the divergence of COVID-19 strains isolated from human hosts has steadily increased from December 2019 to May 2020, suggesting COVID-19 is actively evolving in human hosts. In this paper, we first propose a novel MLCS algorithm NP-MLCS1 for the big sequence analysis, which can calculate the common model for COVID-19 complete genome sequences to provide important information for vaccine and antibody development. Geographic and time-course analysis of the evolution trees of the human COVID-19 reveals possible evolutional paths among strains from 79 countries. This finding has important implications to the management of COVID-19 and the development of vaccines and medications.

The effectiveness of rapid rail transit system is analyzed using tools of complex network for the first time. We evaluated the effectiveness of the system in Beijing quantitatively from different perspectives, including descriptive statistics analysis, bridging property, centrality property, ability of connecting different part of the system and ability of disease spreading. The results showed that the public transport of Beijing does benefit from the rapid rail transit lines, but there is still room to improve. The paper concluded with some policy suggestions regarding how to promote the system. This study offered significant insight that can help understand the public transportation better. The methodology can be easily applied to analyze other urban public systems, such as electricity grid, water system, to develop more livable cities.
