The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) (Fig. 1) is located at Mt. Haizi (4410 m a.s.l., 600 g/cm2, 29° 21’ 27.56” N, 100° 08’ 19.66” E) in Daocheng, Sichuan province, P.R. China. LHAASO consists of 1.3 km2 array (KM2A) of electromagnetic particle detectors (ED) and muon detectors (MD), a water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) with a total active area of 78,000 m2, 18 wide field-of-view air Cherenkov telescopes (WFCTA) and a newly proposed electron-neutron detector array (ENDA) covering 10,000 m2. Each detector is synchronized with all the other through a clock synchronization network based on the White Rabbit protocol. The observatory includes an IT center which comprises the data acquisition system and trigger system, the data analysis facility. In this Chapter, all the above-mentioned components of LHAASO as well as infrastructure are described.

Since the century discovery of cosmic ray, the origin of cosmic ray is always a mystery. The study on the origin of high-energy cosmic ray is in an interdiscipline between the very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy and the cosmic ray physics. The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is a unique and new generation cosmic-ray station with the advantages of high altitude, all-weather, and large-scale. It takes the function of hybrid technology to detect cosmic rays and to upgrade greatly the resolving power between gamma rays and cosmic rays. The LHAASO is expected to make the full-sky survey to find new gamma-ray sources, to obtain the highest sensitivity of gamma-ray detection at the high energy band of > 30 TeV, and to make the very high precision measurement on the component energy spectra of cosmic rays in a broad energy range of 5 orders of magnitude, in order to provide the evidence for revealing the mystery of the origin of cosmic ray. This paper describes the detector structure, performance superiority and scientific motivation of the LHAASO.

Clematis florida is widely used in She Ethnopharmacy in China owing to its significant anti-inflammatory activities. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of the active fraction of C. florida (CFAF) in an arthritis animal model and its possible mechanism. Pre-inflammatory cytokine levels were examined by ELISA. CFAF can significantly improve the symptoms of arthritis such as paw swelling, arthritic index, and histological condition in AA rat. CFAF can also reduce levels of IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6. Further studies showed that triterpene saponins from CFAF induced anti-inflammatory activity inhibited inflammatory mediators by blocking JAK/STAT signalling pathways in the LPS-treated macrophages.

The flowback rate of a shale gas well is controlled by many factors, such as geological and engineering factors, which have a certain complexity. For the aforementioned reason, the knowledge-driven method often has difficulty effectively capturing the correlation rules among multiple datasets. As a data-driven algorithm, deep learning has strong advantages in data correlation analysis, nonlinear fitting and other applications. In this paper, an algorithm is set up to forecast the shale gas well flowback rate by using a deep learning algorithm based on the flowback characteristic factors and data from 286 shale gas wells in the Weiyuan field. An algorithm and prediction model of the flowback parameters of the Weiyuan shale gas wells is established to effectively capture their flowback characteristics. First, the general situation of the study area is briefly introduced, and the data used to predict the flowback rate in this area are analyzed. Second, based on the deep learning algorithm, two kinds of deep feedforward neural network structures and a neural network-based prediction method of shale gas well flowback rate are designed. Finally, according to the regional data, the prediction and analysis of the flowback rate of Weiyuan shale gas wells are carried out. The results show that the correlations between 17 factors, such as fracturing section length and shale gas well flowback rate, are not obvious, but that the deep learning method proposed in this paper can effectively and accurately capture the correlations between the data and predict the flowback rate. The results show high accuracy.

Three new phomalone derivatives, phomalichenones E-G (1–3), and seven known analogues (4–10) were isolated from the cultures of a deep-sea-derived fungus Alternaria sp. MCCC 3A00467. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including the 1D and 2D NMR, and ECD spectrum. Among the compounds isolated, phomalichenone F (2) presented cytotoxic activity against human myeloma cancer U266 cells with IC50 value of 24.99 μg/mL. The most active compound, 10, showed cytotoxicity against U266, HepG2 and A549 cells with IC50 values of 13.26, 14.69 and 24.39 μg/mL, respectively.

A large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) located at Daocheng in Sichuan province, China, with an altitude up to 4410 m above the sea level, takes the function of hybrid technology to detect cosmic rays. It is composed of three sub-arrays: a 1.3 km2 ground-based particle detector array (KM2A) for γ-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics, a 78000 m2 water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) for γ-ray astronomy, and 18 wide field-of-view air Cherenkov/fluorescence telescopes array (WFCTA) for cosmic ray physics. As the major array of LHAASO, KM2A is composed of 5195 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs, each with 1 m2) and 1188 muon detectors (MDs, each with 36 m2). In the ground-based experiments, there are two common independent data acquisition systems, corresponding to the shower and scaler operation modes. Up to now, the KM2A array operates only in shower mode with the primary energy threshold of about 10 TeV. In the scaler mode, it is not necessary for too many detectors to be hit at the same time. The energy threshold of the experiment can be greatly lowered. In order to learn more about the scaler mode in LHAASO-KM2A, we adopt the CORSIKA 7.5700 to study the cascade processes of extensive air showers in the atmosphere, and employ the G4KM2A (based on Geant4) to simulate the detector responses. The KM2A-ED array is divided into dozens of clusters. For one cluster (composed of 64 EDs), the event rates of showers having a number of fired EDs ≥ 1, 2, 3, 4 (in a time coincidence of 100 ns) are recorded. The average rates of the four multiplicities are ~88 kHz, ~1400 Hz, ~220 Hz, and ~110 Hz, respectively. The particle multiplicities m ≥ 3 are almost completely due to cosmic ray secondary particles. The corresponding primary energies and effective areas are also given in this paper. According to our simulations, the energy threshold of the scaler mode can be lowered to 100 GeV, and the effective areas reach up to ~100 m2. The simulation results in this work are helpful in the online triggering with the scaler mode, and provide information for the subsequent data analysis in LHAASO-KM2A.

Terrestrial plant resources are becoming increasingly scarce; moreover, the development of science and technology has facilitated the exploration of marine ecosystems. We isolated and identified six novel (1–6) and six (7–12) known secondary metabolites of Alternaria sp MCCC 3A00467 by chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques and investigated their antitumor activities in human myeloma (U266), liver cancer (HepG2), and lung cancer (A549) cells by the MTT assay. Among these compounds, the new compounds 2, 3 and 4 exhibited excellent anticancer activities with IC50 values of 21.98, 24.99 and 14.78 μg/mL, respectively. These compounds obtained from a marine source have the potential to be developed into novel anticancer drugs.

An effort to search for Kolar-like events within the data set of the L3+C experiment is reported. From a total of 0.89 × 1010 triggered events there are no reliable two-prong Kolar-like events observed. The corresponding event flux upper limit 7.1 × 10−13 cm−2 · s−1 · sr−1 at 90% confidence level is deduced based on some reasonable assumptions.

The L3+C experiment, taking advantage of the L3 muon magnetic spectrometer, measured the spatial tracks of charged cosmic ray particles to obtain rigidity as well as velocity. One possible low velocity exotic particle is observed. The existing uncertainties are discussed, and the flux upper limit of the low velocity exotic particles from this observation is deduced based on the assumption of a null observation. The result is 6.2 × 10−10 cm−2.s−1.sr−1 at 90% confidence level in the velocity range from 0.04c to 0.5c.
