Strong early growth vigor is an essential target in both direct seeded rice breeding and high-yielding rice breeding for rice varieties with relatively short growth duration in the double-cropping region. Shoot dry weight (SDW) is one of the important traits associated with early growth vigor, and breeders have been working to improve this trait. Finding stable QTLs or functional genes for SDW is crucial for improving the early growth vigor by implementing molecular breeding in rice. Here, a genome-wide association analysis revealed that the QTL for SDW, qSDW-5, was stably detected in the three cultivation methods commonly used in production practice. Through gene-based haplotype analysis of the annotated genes within the putative region of qSDW-5, and validated by gene expression and knockout transgenic experiments, LOC_Os05g09520, which is identical to the reported GW5/GSE5 controlling grain width (GW) and thousand grain weight (TGW) was identified as the causal gene for qSDW-5. Five main haplotypes of LOC_Os05g09520 were identified in the diverse international rice collection used in this study and their effects on SDW, GW and TGW were analyzed. Phenotypic comparisons of the major haplotypes of LOC_Os05g09520 in the three subpopulations (indica, japonica and aus) revealed the same patterns of wider GW and higher TGW along with higher SDW. Furtherly, the haplotype analysis of 138 rice varieties/lines widely used in southern China showed that 97.8% of the cultivars/lines carry Hap2LOC_Os05g09520. These results not only provide a promising gene source for the molecular breeding of rice varieties with strong early growth vigor, but also elucidate the effect of the LOC_Os05g09520 haplotypes on SDW, GW, and TGW in rice. Importantly, this study provides direct genetic evidence that these three traits are significantly correlated, and suggests a breeding strategy for developing high-yielding and slender grain-shaped indica cultivars with strong early growth vigor. Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder prevalent among adolescents. Typically, it manifests with hyperglycemia before the age of 25. MODY5 is attributed to a mutation in the Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor-1β (HNF-1β) gene. A complete absence of HNF-1β is observed in 50% of those with MODY5. The 17q12 microdeletion syndrome closely linked with MODY5. Its incidence in the general population is around 1 in 14,500 and is linked with facial deformities, diabetes, polycystic kidneys, pancreatic hypertrophy, liver anomalies, and neuropsychological impairments. The most primary clinical signs are predominantly associated with the HNF-1β gene deletion. We chronicle the case of a male of 19 years of age diagnosed with diabetes, who, alongside persistent liver damage and polycystic kidneys, was referred from a community hospital to the Xuzhou Central Hospital. His clinical presentation included diabetes, liver dysfunction, polycystic kidneys, lipid irregularities, insulin resistance, and fatty atrophy. Subsequent genetic screening unveiled a 17q12 chromosomal deletion and an absence of the Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor-1β (HNF-1β) gene. Hence, for adolescent patients lacking a familial diabetes history but exhibiting symptoms like polycystic kidneys, liver damage, lipid irregularities, and fatty atrophy, a thorough assessment for the 17q12 microdeletion syndrome becomes imperative. The co‐culture of strain Citrobacter sp. RDC and Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA was used in this study and it was found that the co‐culture using 200 mg/L phenol as carbon source exhibited higher maximum current density than using the single strain RDC and G. sulfurreducens PCA, respectively. Meanwhile, the co‐culture was used to generate electricity by degrading phenol with the current density of 699.07 μA/cm2 by using 200 mg/L phenol as the sole carbon source, which was higher than that only using G. sulfurreducens PCA (236.20 μA/cm2). Especially, the degradation efficiency of 200 mg/L phenol by co‐culture can reach 55.16 % within 36 h being 4.16‐fold higher than the single strain G. sulfurreducens PCA. Furthermore, the component ratio of two strains was optimized for increasing electricity generation using 500 mg/L phenol as carbon source. The maximum current density was 501.54 μA/cm2 under the ratio of 3 : 1 for strain RDC to G. sulfurreducens PCA. These results highlight that phenol is good carbon source for co‐culture to produce electricity. The co‐culture system provides a promising application pathway for phenol degradation treatment coupled with electricity generation in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
