9. A Modified Penman-monteith Model for Simulating Transpiration of Citrus Trees under Water Stress

Abstract

【Objective】 Transpiration is not only an important hydrological process but also a footprint of primary productivity of terrestrial systems under different environments. Its calculation at large scale is challenging. This paper proposes a method to fill this gap. 【Method】 The method is based on the modified Penman-Monteith (PM) model. The canopy resistance in the model is estimated using soil moisture based on the Ortega-Farias model, and the hydrodynamic resistance is calculated by two methods: one is based on wind speed and canopy temperature-environment relationship, and the other one is the Perrier logarithm method. The model was applied to simulate transpiration of citrus trees under water stress from June to July in 2022; its accuracy was evaluated against ground-true data. 【Result】 Water stress significantly reduced stomatal conductance and transpiration of the citrus trees. The canopy resistance estimated by the Ortega-Farias model agreed with the measured data with R2 = 0.63, accurately capturing the diurnal variation in canopy resistance under water stress. The aerodynamic resistance calculated by the leaf-based method was significantly greater than estimated by the Perrier logarithmic method. The accuracy of aerodynamic resistance calculated by the Perrier logarithmic method varied with soil water content, and the R2 between the measured and calculated transpiration from the PM model decreased from 0.66 when the plant was under slight water stress to 0.2 when the plant was under severe stress. In contrast, for the transpiration calculated using the aerodynamic resistances estimated by the leaf-simulation method, the R2 decreased from 0.71 to 0.24 with the increase in water stress. 【Conclusion】 When the soil moisture was greater than 50% of the field capacity, using the Ortega-Farias model to estimate canopy resistance and the leaf-based method to estimate aerodynamic resistance can improve the accuracy of the PM model for simulating transpiration of the citrus trees under water stress.

Abstract

Abstract: The Third Pole (TP) is experiencing rapid warming and is currently in its warmest period in the past 2,000 years. This paper reviews the latest development in multidisciplinary TP research associated with this warming. The rapid warming facilitates intense and broad glacier melt over most of the TP, although some glaciers in the northwest are advancing. By heating the atmosphere and reducing snow/ice albedo, aerosols also contribute to the glaciers melting. Glacier melt is accompanied by lake expansion and intensification of the water cycle over the TP. Precipitation has increased over the eastern and northwestern TP. Meanwhile, the TP is greening and most regions are experiencing advancing phenological trends, although over the southwest there is a spring phenological delay mainly in response to the recent decline in spring precipitation. Atmospheric and terrestrial thermal and dynamical processes over the TP affect the Asian monsoon at different scales. Recent evidence indicates substantial roles that mesoscale convective systems play in the TP’s precipitation as well as an association between soil moisture anomalies in the TP and the Indian monsoon. Moreover, an increase in geohazard events has been associated with recent environmental changes, some of which have had catastrophic consequences caused by glacial lake outbursts and landslides. Active debris flows are growing in both frequency of occurrences and spatial scale. Meanwhile, new types of disasters, such as the twin ice avalanches in Ali in 2016, are now appearing in the region. Adaptation and mitigation measures should be taken to help societies’ preparation for future environmental challenges. Some key issues for future TP studies are also discussed.

Abstract

Variable heat fluxes over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) interact thermally with the atmosphere, affecting weather in surrounding areas, particularly in the Middle and Lower Yangtze River (MLYR). However, the circulation patterns and time-lag effects between TP heat fluxes and MLYR precipitation remain unclear. This study identified 577 large-scale daily heavy precipitation events (LSDHPEs) in the MLYR from 1980 to 2022. We analyzed the weather causation and spatiotemporal correlations between the TP surface heat fluxes and MLYR LSDHPEs using self-organizing map clustering, singular value decomposition, and harmonic analysis of time series. The results found two dominant synoptic patterns of LSDHPEs at 500 hPa: one, driven by anticyclonic and cyclonic circulations coinciding with shifts in the West Pacific subtropical high and South Asian high, increased from 2000 to 2022; the other, influenced by MLYR cyclonic circulation, showed a significant decrease. For the first time, we revealed lagged effects of the latent heat anomalies (with a lag time of 1–10 d and 130–200 d) and sensible heat anomalies (with a lag time of 2–4 months) over the TP during LSDHPEs in the MLYR. The results may enhance our understanding of TP heat flux anomalies as precursor signals for early warning of heavy rainfall and flooding in the MLYR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
