Abstract

The LASSO is an attractive regularisation method for linear regression that combines variable selection with an efficient computation procedure. This paper is concerned with enhancing the performance of LASSO for square-free hierarchical polynomial models when combining validation error with a measure of model complexity. The measure of the complexity is the sum of Betti numbers of the model which is seen as a simplicial complex, and we describe the model in terms of components and cycles, borrowing from recent developments in computational topology. We study and propose an algorithm which combines statistical and topological criteria. This compound criterion would allow us to deal with model selection problems in polynomial regression models containing higher-order interactions. Simulation results demonstrate that the compound criteria produce sparser models with lower prediction errors than the estimators of several other statistical methods for higher order interaction models.

Abstract

Activities of Daily Living (ADL) are important indicators of both cognitive and physical well-being in healthy and ill humans. There is a range of methods to recognise ADLs, each with its own limitations. The focus of this research was on sensing location-driven activities, in which ADLs are derived from location sensed using Radio Frequency (RF, e.g., WiFi or BLE), Magnetic Field (MF) and light (e.g., Lidar) measurements in three different environments. This research discovered that different environments can have different constraints and requirements. It investigated how to improve the positioning accuracy and hence how to improve the ADL recognition accuracy. There are several challenges that need to be addressed in order to do this. First, RF location fingerprinting is affected by the heterogeneity smartphones and their orientation with respect to transmitters, increasing the location determination error. To solve this, a novel Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) ranking based location fingerprinting methods that use Kendall Tau Correlation Coefficient (KTCC) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are proposed to correlate a signal position to pre-defined Reference Points (RPs) or fingerprints, more accurately, The accuracy has increased by up to 25.8% when compared to using Euclidean Distance (ED) based Weighted K-Nearest Neighbours Algorithm (WKNN). Second, the use of MF measurements as fingerprints can overcome some additional RF fingerprinting challenges, as MF measurements are far more invariant to static and dynamic physical objects that affect RF transmissions. Hence, a novel fast path matching data algorithm for an MF sensor combined with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to determine direction was researched and developed. It can achieve an average of 1.72 m positioning accuracy when the user walks far fewer (5) steps. Third, a device-free or off-body novel location-driven ADL method based upon 2D Lidar was investigated. An innovative method for recognising daily activities using a Seq2Seq model to analyse location data from a low-cost rotating 2D Lidar is proposed. It provides an accuracy of 88% when recognising 17 targeted ADLs. These proposed methods in this thesis have been validated in real environments.

4. Psychosomatic health status and corresponding comorbid network analysis of college students in traditional Chinese medicine schools.

Abstract

Introduction: Depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms are highly comorbid and represent the most prevalent psychosomatic health issues. Few studies have investigated the network structure of psychosomatic symptoms among traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) students. This study aims to investigate the psychosomatic health status of college students in TCM universities, while simultaneously constructing a network structure of common somatic symptoms and psychological symptoms. Methods: Online investigation was conducted among 665 students from a university of Chinese medicine. Health Status Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) were used to assess the mental symptoms and physical status of participants. With the R software processing, a network model of psychosomatic symptoms was constructed. Specifically, we computed the predictability (PRE), expected influence (EI), and bridging expected influence (BEI) of each symptom. Meanwhile, the stability and accuracy of the network were evaluated using the case-deletion bootstrap method. Results: Among the participants, 277 (41.65%) subjects exhibited depressive symptoms, and 244 (36.69%) subjects showed symptoms of anxiety. Common somatic symptoms included fatigue, forgetfulness, sighing, thirst, and sweating. Within the psychosomatic symptoms network, " worrying too much about things ", "uncontrollable worries" and "weakness" exhibited the high EI and PRE, suggesting they are central symptoms. " Little interest or pleasure in doing things," " feeling down, depressed, or hopeless," " dyssomnia," and "sighing" with high BEI values demonstrated that they are bridging symptoms in the comorbid network. Conclusion: The psychosomatic health status of college students in traditional Chinese medicine schools is concerning, showing high tendencies for depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms. There exists a complex relationship between somatic symptoms and psychological symptoms among students. " Worrying too much about things ", "uncontrollable worries" and "weakness" enable to serve as comorbid intervention targets for anxiety, depression, and somatic symptoms. Addressing " little interest or pleasure in doing things," " feeling down, depressed, or hopeless," " dyssomnia," and "sighing" may effectively prevent the mutual transmission between psychological and physical symptoms. 7. Team-level high-performance work systems, self-efficacy and creativity: differential moderating roles of person–job fit and goal difficulty

Abstract

Research has examined firm- or unit-level high-performance work systems (HPWS) and impacts on firm, unit, or individual outcomes. Relatively few works have examined how team-level HPWS works together with individual-level factors to shape individual creativity. Grounded in social cognitive theory and the interactionist model of creativity, this study posits and tests the thesis that team-level HPWS and individual-level job characteristics jointly influence individual creativity via individual self-efficacy. We collected multi-source and multi-level data from 321 employees of 75 teams and their direct managers in China. Results show that team-level HPWS interacts with individual-level person–job fit and goal difficulty to influence self-efficacy and, subsequently, creativity. Specifically, individual employee’s person–job fit (P–J fit) and goal difficulty moderate the positive indirect relationship of team-level HPWS with creativity through employee self-efficacy, such that it is stronger when P–J fit is high or when goal difficulty is low. We extend research on HPWS and creativity by revealing P–J fit and goal difficulty as individual-level boundary conditions for the effect of team-level HPWS. © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Abstract

IPIN 2019 Competition, sixth in a series of IPIN competitions, was held at the CNR Research Area of Pisa (IT), integrated into the program of the IPIN 2019 Conference. It included two on-site real-time Tracks and three off-site Tracks. The four Tracks presented in this paper were set in the same environment, made of two buildings close together for a total usable area of 1000 m2 outdoors and and 6000 m2 indoors over three floors, with a total path length exceeding 500 m. IPIN competitions, based on the EvAAL framework, have aimed at comparing the accuracy performance of personal positioning systems in fair and realistic conditions: past editions of the competition were carried in big conference settings, university campuses and a shopping mall. Positioning accuracy is computed while the person carrying the system under test walks at normal walking speed, uses lifts and goes up and down stairs or briefly stops at given points. Results presented here are a showcase of state-of-the-art systems tested side by side in real-world settings as part of the on-site real-time competition Tracks. Abstract

Research on high‐performance work systems (HPWS) has drawn primarily from social exchange theory and human capital theory to unlock the underlying mechanisms in relation to employee performance. In addition to social exchange and human capital theory, a personal resources perspective can also be used to explain the effects of HPWS. In this cross‐level research, we examined the mediating roles of social exchange and thriving, and the moderating effect of proactive personality in the relationships between HPWS and task performance and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) by analyzing a sample of 391 employees and 84 supervisors from 21 firms in China. Using multi‐level analyses, social exchange and thriving were found to mediate the effects of HPWS on employee task performance and OCB. Furthermore, proactive personality attenuated HPWS's direct effect on thriving and indirect effects on employee task performance and OCB through thriving. Finally, we discuss theoretical contributions, and practical implications of the study, as well as future research directions. Abstract

Under the framework of time trend breaks, the popular BSADF (backward Sup-ADF) test easily misidentifies the bubble processes. As an extending analysis, we construct a t-statistic to further identify the data feature of the detected bubble periods in BSADF test. For the sake of application, we examine the bubble phenomenon related to recent stock market activity in China. We find that a bubble period estimated by the BSADF test is spurious; the rapid rise of stock market on this period is driven by trend changes and has a solid foundation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

PIN 2019 Competition, sixth in a series of IPIN competitions, was held at the CNR Research Area of Pisa (IT), integrated into the program of the IPIN 2019 Conference. It included two on-site real-time Tracks and three off-site Tracks. The four Tracks presented in this paper were set in the same environment, made of two buildings close together for a total usable area of 1000 m 2 outdoors and and 6000 m 2 indoors over three floors, with a total path length exceeding 500 m. IPIN competitions, based on the EvAAL framework, have aimed at comparing the accuracy performance of personal positioning systems in fair and realistic conditions: past editions of the competition were carried in big conference settings, university campuses and a shopping mall. Positioning accuracy is computed while the person carrying the system under test walks at normal walking speed, uses lifts and goes up and down stairs or briefly stops at given points. Results presented here are a showcase of state-of-the-art systems tested side by side in real-world settings as part of the on-site real-time competition Tracks. Results for off-site Tracks allow a detailed and reproducible comparison of the most recent positioning and tracking algorithms in the same environment as the on-site Tracks.
