The density of seedlings in a nursery affects their growth parameters and subsequently their adaptation to the growth conditions of their planting sites. Density is especially important in the case of deciduous seedling species, such as pedunculate oak, as it significantly influences their size and leaf size during the production season. The research was conducted in 2015 and 2016 at the container nursery in Nędza (Rudy Raciborskie Forest District). The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of reduced density on the growth of pedunculate oak seedlings in Hiko V265 containers. Approximately three months after sowing in each container the seedlings were sorted into tall (TS) and short seedlings (SS). Subsequently, the TS seedlings were transferred to a new container until reaching 50% capacity. This provided double the growing space for the transplanted seedlings in the second half of the production season. Each year seedlings were analyzed at 14 dates in total in two−week intervals. During the first five dates one container was selected, and after sorting, two containers (one with TS and one with SS) were selected during the remaining nine dates. On each date seedling height, root collar diameter, the dry weight of the roots, shoots, leaves, and total seedlings were measured. Each seedling was assessed to determine three indices of its breeding suitability including: sturdiness quotient (SQ), shoot−to−root ratio (S/R) and Dickson quality index (DQI). The study found that the SS seedlings that were retained in the container after sorting were on average characterized by a lower height and root collar diameter than the TS seedlings. However, by the end of the production season the SS seedlings reached the required quality class. Both the sorted seedling groups exhibited a comparable sturdiness quotient and shoot−to−root ratio during the growth season, whereas only the TS seedlings had a higher Dickson quality index. Overall, the study results support the idea of reducing seedling density in a container during the production season by transferring the tallest seedlings to new containers. Various factors, such as availability of light, water, nutrients and soil properties have impact on plant growth. Macroelement content in the seedlings affects their biometric features (such as height and weight) which in turn affects the likelihood that the seedling would survive and thrive later in the forest. This research focuses on analyzing how changes in bulk density of the substrate affect the selected biometric features and the content of macroelements in different parts of the Scots pine Pinus sylvestris L. seedlings (needles, shoot and root). This paper presents the results of research carried out using Scots pine seedlings grown in 120 cm containers. The seedlings grew at 9 different peat substrate bulk densities (ranging from 0.208−0.342 g·cmsup–3/sup). Here, we have determined the macroelements (N, P, K, S, Ca and Mg) content of individual parts of the seedlings (needles, shoot, root system) and substrate furthermore their selected biometric features (height of the above ground plant, dry weight of needles, shoot, root system, length of fine roots). It was found that higher bulk density of the substrate had a limiting effect on the uptake of most macroelements by seedlings and on the examined biometric features. The analysed macroelement content in the assimilation apparatus was compared to the optimal values given in the literature and it was shown that the best concentration of peat substrate for the cultivation of Scots pine seedlings, in terms of this criterion, is in the range of 0.103−0.117 g·cmsup–3/sup dry bulk density., Sylwan 166 (3): 211-223

Substrate compaction is one of the most important factors influencing plant growth. Seedling growth is influenced by the substrate’s physical properties, including its compaction level, typically expressed as bulk density. Substrate compaction determines the air−water ratio, water and nutrients availability, and microbial activity. Several authors have studied the effect of soil compaction on the growth and development of various plants. However, the influence of a wide range of different levels of substrate compaction on the growth of Scots pine seedlings in container nurseries has yet to be investigated. This paper presents the results of a study of the influence of different levels of peat substrate compaction on the growth parameters of Scots pine seedlings. The seedlings were grown in 9 variants of bulk density, ranging from 0.208 to 0.342 g·cm–3 (dry bulk density: 0.083−0.137 g·cm–3) in containers with multiple 120 cm3 cells. Each variant was prepared in 3 replicates (a total of 1080 seeds was sown). The experiment lasted one growing season. The substrate density was found to affect seedling height, root collar diameter, needles’ dry weight , shoots and roots, and total root length. The results showed that the growth parameters of Scots pine seedlings grown in nursery containers could be modified by selecting appropriate peat substrate density. Low (0.208−0.242 g·cm–3) and high (0.308−0.342 g·cm–3) substrate densities reduced seedling growth. In terms of the desirable seedling parameters, namely shoot−to−root ratio (S/R) and sturdiness quotient (SQ), the seedlings achieved the best values at medium substrate densities, i.e., from 0.26 to 0.29 g·cm–3. We analysed quality of water from the intakes in the Myślenice Forest District (S Poland). 8 springs were selected: 4 were located in the Natura 2000 area on the Mt. Polica and another 4 originated from the Harbutowice surroundings. Additionally water from 3 places on streams was gathered: 2 points were located in the ‘Las Gościba’ nature reserve and 1 in the water intake for the residents of Sułkowice municipality. Water samples were collected at the beginning of each month in the year 2016. The water temperature and flow rate were measured in the field. The hydrogen ion activity (pH), electrolytic conductivity (PEW) as well as the content of NH4+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl–, NO3–, SO42–, PO43– and F– were determined with Dionex 5000 ion chromatograph. We also marked the content of P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni and Pb using the ICP−OES emission spectrometer. All analyzes were carried out in the Laboratory of Geochemistry of Forest Environment and Areas Designated for Reclamation of the Forest Faculty of the University of Agriculture in Krakow. Water quality classification was made due to the tested properties in accordance with Regulation of the Minister of the Environment of 21st July 2016 on the classification of the state of surface water bodies and environmental quality standards for priority substances. The aim of the study was to apply the forest soil trophic index (ITGL) in the assessment of post−agricultural soil under naturally regenerated silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) stands. The study was conducted in Mazowieckie region (central Poland) in 10 locations (tab. 1). In each location we established 4 study plots with naturally regenerated silver birch of different age. The age of the investigated stands ranged from 2 to 17 years. On each study plot samples from three upper soil horizons (0−5 cm, 5−15 cm and 15−50 cm) were collected for laboratory analysis. The following characteristics were determined in the soil samples: pH, organic carbon (C) and total nitrogen (N) content, particle size and the content of exchangeable base cations (Ca, Mg, Na and K). These soil characteristics were on used for ITGL calculation. Chemical properties of soils under silver birch regeneration varied with regard to trees age, whereas physical attributes turned to be rather stabile over the time (tab. 2). According to ITGL value investigated soils were classified as eutrophic. It is probably the effect of high base cations content, which is a result of systematic fertilization during the long term agricultural use. The insignificantly different ITGL values for the studied soils (tab. 3) indicated their similarity in terms of site productivity potential and soil−geological characteristics. The soil properties, especially the quality of soil organic matter described with C/N ratio, improved several years after the cessation of agricultural activity and spontaneous afforestation. The Białowieża Forest (BF) is in many respects an exceptional object, of a great importance for nature protection and forest management, at the international scale. The BF plays also a key role from the point of view of regional development and welfare of local community. In the last period, a big threat for multiple values of the BF has arisen, as a result of enormous bark beetle infestation, which started in 2012 and has killed 1.4 million m 3 of spruce trees. In the paper, first, a brief overview of the general history of the BF and an account of long−term human impacts on its functioning and structure is provided. Next, the history of bark beetle infestations in the BF is analysed. It is shown that, in the period 1992−2007, the average volume of spruces killed by bark beetle amounted on average to 20,000 m of wood annually. During that period practically all dead trees were removed from the forest by means of salvation cuttings. Starting from 2008, more and more trees infested by European spruce bark beetle were left in the forest, in a result of a pressure exerted by environmental groups. In 2012, Minister of Environment decided to reduce the allowable cut, determined in forest management plans elaborated for the managed part of the BF, from 107,000 to 48,500 m/year. This decision, along with several other regulations and restrictions, made in practice impossible to stop the development of a current bark beetle infestation, which started in 2011 and intensified during the next 6 years (solely in 2016 bark beetles killed 480,000 m of spruce trees). In the paper, the most important implications and consequences of the current situation are briefly summarized and discussed. A special attention is given to the problems concerning: 1) protection of Natura 2000 species and sites (endangered by bark beetle outbreak), 2) a negative influence of large amounts of spruce deadwood on forest soils, 3) threats caused by pathogenic fungi, 4) question of public safety, 5) fire hazard, and 6) economical dimension. The legal and socio−economical foundations of the functioning of Hajnówka, Browsk and Białowieża forest districts comprising the managed part of the BF, as well as their most important environmental and social consequences are discussed too. Among others, it is indicated that, under current conditions of the BF, human intervention plays a key role in maintaining stable and compositionally diverse woodland communities. Finally, several suggestions and recommendations are provided, aimed at, in the short term, breaking off the current bark beetle outbreak, and, in the long term, at maintaining a multifunctional character of the BF and its ability to provide all important ecosystem services on a sustainable basis., Sylwan 162 (5): 373-386

Początki państwowej administracji i gospodarki leśnej sięgają VIII-IX wieku. Wraz z występującą w tym czasie wielką wędrówką ludów nastąpił znaczny wyrąb lasu na potrzeby ówczesnego osadnictwa. Kolejna nadmierna eksploatacja lasów w Europie miała miejsce w XIII-XV wieku i była wynikiem intensywnego rozwoju miast, rzemiosła, transportu, w tym drewnochłonnej floty oraz górnictwa, hutnictwa żelaza i szkła. Rosnące z roku na rok zużycie drewna doprowadziło do jego nadmiernego pozyskania i ubytku zasobności drzewostanów. Odzwierciedleniem tej sytuacji było zjawisko „głodu drewna”. Kolejny okres intensywnego użytkowania tego surowca nazwany został „epoką drewna” i trwał od XV do XIX wieku. Pierwszą usystematyzowaną teorią zajmującą się ekonomicznymi problemami gospodarki leśnej była kameralistyka (niem. Kammer − m.in. izba skarbowa), której początki rozwoju sięgają przełomu XVII i XVIII wieku. Jej nazwa pochodzi od byłych kamer rządowych. Kameralistów traktowano jako niemieckich przedstawicieli merkantylizmu i zaliczano do przedstawicieli liberalizmu gospodarczego. Wzrost zainteresowania leśnictwem ze strony kameralistów doprowadził do szybkiego rozwoju przemysłu leśnego. Za prekursora tych działań uważany jest W.G. Moser, autor dzieła „Zasady ekonomiki leśnictwa” (1757), według którego głównym celem leśnictwa jest zaspokojenie zapotrzebowania przemysłu na drewno1. Z obawy o brak dostatecznych dostaw drewna Moser formułuje „zasadę ciągłości użytkowania”, która w późniejszym okresie została określona jako „zasada ciągłości produkcji leśnej” i stała się kamieniem węgielnym rozwoju gospodarstwa leśnego. Na przełomie XVIII i XIX wieku gospodarkę leśną zaczyna kształtować liberalna ekonomia A. Smitha, wraz z jej wolnym rynkiem. Podstawowe jej zasady, w tym dotyczące zwłaszcza równowagi ekonomicznej gospodarstwa leśnego, znalazły swoje miejsce pod skrzydłami statyki leśnej. Jej wybitny przedstawiciel, G. Heyer (1865), określił ją natomiast jako rachunek oceny rentowności metod gospodarowania w leśnictwie2. To właśnie pod wpływem statyki żądano od leśnictwa dostarczenia „możliwie dużego dochodu pieniężnego” (zysku, renty), a nie największej masy drewna. Rozległość zainteresowania statyki leśnej doprowadziła do sformułowania dwóch podstawowych teorii ekonomiki leśnictwa określanych jako: ■ teoria renty gruntowej oraz ■ teoria renty leśnej. Pierwsza z wymienionych teorii główną uwagę koncentrowała na gruntach leśnych, które traktowała jako kapitał trwały gospodarstwa leśnego. Natomiast drzewostan był uznawany za kapitał (środek) obrotowy. Pojęcie gospodarności sprowadzało się do uzyskania maksymalnej rentowności mierzonej stosunkiem czystego (netto) dochodu (renty) do wartości kapitału trwałego gruntu leśnego. W obliczeniach tych statyka leśna korzystała w szerokim zakresie i nadal korzysta z rachunków procentu składanego. Wymieniona teoria renty leśnej nazywana również szkołą renty leśnej lub nauką o czystym dochodzie z lasu, dążyła do maksymalizacji czystego dochodu z lasu obejmującego przede wszystkim grunt i drzewostan. Wiek, w którym ten postulat był spełniony, określono wiekiem najwyższej renty leśnej lub wiekiem rębności. Teoretycznie wiek ten jest znacznie wyższy niż wiek rębności najwyższej renty gruntowej. Dla gorszych siedlisk różnice te wynosiły 40-60 i więcej lat, dla najlepszych zaś siedlisk około 30-40 lat. Wiek najwyższej rentowności był na ogół wyższy od wieku dojrzałości finansowej, a niższy od wieku najwyższej renty leśnej. W Europie Środkowej wiek rębności waha się od 60 do 250 lat (Möhring 2004)3. Długi okres produkcji leśnej na ogół dominuje w ekstensywnych metodach produkcji. Natomiast aktywne metody zagospodarowania lasu i jego pielęgnacji obejmują rocznie zaledwie od 10 do 20% ogółu powierzchni gospodarstwa leśnego. Oznacza to, że przeciętny cykl zabiegów hodowlano-ochronnych powtarzany jest co 5−10 lat. Przedstawiona krótka charakterystyka teorii statyki leśnej wskazuje na wysoki stopień jej operacjonizmu wynikający z empirycznych (fizycznych) metod pomiaru elementów rachunku renty gruntowej i renty leśnej. Pod tym względem rachunek rent wyraźnie różni się od pozostałych rachunków ekonomicznych gospodarki leśnej. Od XIX wieku, zwłaszcza od ukształtowania przez M. Faustmanna finansowego nurtu gospodarki leśnej, jej cele zostały zdominowane przez teorię czystego dochodu z gruntu, nazywanego również teorią renty gruntowej. Upowszechniła się ona po długim, przeszło 100-letnim sporze między nauką o czystym dochodzie z gruntu a nauką o czystym dochodzie z lasu. Obok teorii renty gruntowej i renty leśnej w XIX w. w leśnictwie zachodniej i środkowej części Europy ukształtowały się dwa nurty, które odbiegają pod względem celów i metod od teorii renty gruntowej i leśnej. Nurty te są bliżej określone w poniższych tytułach: ■ nurt ekologiczno-środowiskowy oraz ■ nurt ekonomiczno-finansowy. W Europie Środkowej i Zachodniej dominuje nurt ekologiczno-środowiskowy. Jego cechą są drzewostany wielogatunkowe o długim cyklu produkcji leśnej, słabych trzebieżach, niskim oprocentowaniu i małych odsetkach oraz o znacznym podporządkowaniu gospodarki leśnej czystemu dochodowi z lasu. Kolejną cechą nurtu ekologicznego jest duży przyrost miąższości, ale także znaczny udział drzewostanów starszych klas wieku w strukturach lasu oraz ich odporność na działanie biotycznych i abiotycznych zakłóceń, dywersyfikacja dochodów i ukierunkowanie celu gospodarki leśnej na maksymalizację czystego dochodu z lasu. Przeciwieństwem powyższego nurtu jest ekonomiczno-finansowa orientacja gospodarki leśnej ukierunkowana na krótkie wieki rębności, intensywne trzebieże, drzewostany jednogatunkowe, duże oprocentowanie i najwyższy czysty dochód z gruntu. Jednym słowem gospodarstwo o orientacji finansowo-ekonomicznej dąży do krótkich wieków rębności, zrębowego użytkowania oraz wysokich procentów. Tymczasem nurt ekologiczny preferuje długie wieki rębności i niskie oprocentowanie. Podsumowując należy zauważyć, że ukształtowane w przeszłości dwa nurty gospodarki leśnej dominują nadal w leśnictwie europejskim z różnym nasileniem poszczególnych metod. Ekonomiczne podejście do podejmowania decyzji inwestycyjnych w leśnych warunkach niepewności ryzyka zostało wsparte przez rozwijaną od roku 1950 teorię portfela, najpierw w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki, później w innych krajach, w tym zwłaszcza w Skandynawii i Niemczech. Z jednej strony preferowane są więc drzewostany o dużej odporności na ryzyko, ale mniejszej produkcyjności, z drugiej zaś drzewostany o znacznej produkcyjności, ale małej odporności na ryzyko. Optymalna kombinacja drzewostanów reprezentujących te dwie cechy w jednym z przykładowych leśnictw w Niemczech miała następujący skład gatunkowy: 70% Św, 30% Bk (Knoke 2004)4. Natomiast w Szwecji optymalna struktura gatunkowa drzewostanów wynosi: 49% Św oraz 51% So (Svensson 2000)5. Do szczególnie ważnych i szeroko stosowanych obecnie rozwiązań należy dywersyfikacja, która polega na zmniejszeniu sumarycznego ryzyka przy jednakowym dochodzie lub zwiększeniu dochodu przy jednakowym ryzyku. Wynika stąd, że teoria portfela obejmuje kombinację dwóch dóbr, na przykład drzewosfery jodłowe i bukowe. Metodyczne aspekty omawianej teorii portfela są dziełem H. Markowitza (1952), który został za nie uhonorowany nagrodą Nobla w 1990 r.6 Natomiast pionierskiezastosowania teorii portfela w praktyce leśnictwa USA są wynikiem intensywnych prac W.L. Millsa i W.L. Hoovera (1982) nad rozwojem inwestycji leśnych7. Odnotowany w kolejnych dekadach dalszy rozwój teorii portfela dotyczy przede wszystkim leśnictwa Skandynawii oraz Niemiec. Zgodnie z teorią portfela jego istota polega na optymalnej kombinacji dwóch dóbr, na przykład dwóch gatunków w drzewostanie (Kruschwitz 2007)8. Powszechnym przykładem takiej kombinacji jest Las Tharandzki oraz sporządzone dla niego optymalne kombinacje struktury gatunkowej drzewostanów. Taki sam atrybut odnosi się również do innych kategorii dóbr. Dziewiąta edycja wspólnego przedsięwzięcia Instytutu Badawczego Leśnictwa i Dyrekcji Generalnej Lasów Państwowych, jakim jest Zimowa Szkoła Leśna, dotyczyła właśnie wyzwań stojących przed współczesnym leśnictwem, zarówno tych wynikających ze zmian globalnych środowiska, jak i ekonomiczno-społecznych aspektów leśnictwa. W IX Sesji uczestniczyło 259 osób. Poza autorami krajowymi, reprezentującymi Ministerstwo Środowiska, Dyrekcję Generalną Lasów Państwowych oraz jednostki organizacyjne Lasów Państwowych, uczelnie i instytuty naukowe, referaty wygłosili naukowcy i leśnicy praktycy z zagranicy. ----------------------------------------- 1 Moser W.G. 1757.
