Chronic stress also induces the dysregulation of the reward system and increases the risk of food addiction, according to recent clinical findings. However, few studies have tested the effect of chronic stress on food addiction in animal models.Purpose: The objective of this study was to identify whether chronic stress promotes food addiction or not and explore the possible mechanisms.Method: We applied adaily 2 hrsflashing LED irradiation stress to mice fed chow or palatable food to mimic the effect of chronic stress on feeding. After 1 month of chronic stress exposure, we tested their binge eating behaviors, cravings for palatable food, responses for palatable food, and compulsive eating behaviors to evaluate the effect of chronic stress on food addiction-like behaviors. We detected changes in the levels of various genes and proteins in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), ventral tegmental area (VTA) and lateral hypothalamus using qPCR and immunofluorescence staining, respectively.Results: Behaviors results indicated chronic stress obviously increased food addiction score (FAS) in the palatable food feeding mice. Moreover, the FAS had astrong relationship with the extent of the increase in body weight. Chronic stress increased the expression of corticotropin-releasing factor receptor 1(CRFR1) was increased in the NAc shell and core but decreased in the VTA of the mice fed with palatable food. Chronic stress also increased expression of both dopamine receptor 2 (DR2) and mu-opioid receptor (MOR) in the NAc.Conclusion: Chronic stress aggravates the FAS and contributed to the development of stress-related obesity. Chronic stress drives the dysregulation of the CRF signaling pathway in the reward system and increases the expression of DR2 and MOR in the nucleus accumbens.Keywords: chronic stress, obesity, food addiction, dopamine receptor 2, mu-opioid receptor, nucleus accumbens

Spectral properties of Nd:Sr(1-x)Y(x)F(2+x) crystals were investigated. Compared with Nd:SrF2, the spectral parameters of Nd:Sr(1-x)Y(x)F(2+x) (x=0.05,0.1) were altered in a large scale. LD-pumped true CW laser has been demonstrated in the crystals. The slope efficiency up to 43.5% in 0.43% Nd:Sr0.95Y0.05F2.05 was achieved. The system is a promising candidate for highly efficient lasers.

We have demonstrated a diode-pumped passively mode-locked femtosecond Nd,Y:CaF2 disordered crystal laser for the first time to our knowledge. By choosing appropriate Y-doping concentration, a broad fluorescence linewidth of 31 nm has been obtained from the gain linewidth-variable Nd,Y:CaF2 crystal. With the Nd,Y:CaF2 disordered crystal as gain medium, the mode-locked laser generated pulses with pulse duration as short as 103 fs, average output power of 89 mW, and repetition rate of 100 MHz. To our best knowledge, this is the shortest pulse generated from Nd-doped crystal lasers so far. The research results show that the Nd,Y:CaF2 disordered crystal will be a potential alternative as gain medium of repetitive chirped pulse amplification for high-peak-power lasers.

Two types of poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) based nanoparticles were prepared by surface modification (C-NPs) and homogeneous modification (G-NPs) with chitosan. The naked PLGA NPs were served as control. These nanoparticles all showed regularly spherical shape with mean diameters as 191.3 ± 3.6 nm, 211.9 ± 13.2 nm and 187.5 ± 17.6 nm for PLGA NPs, C-NPs and G-NPs, respectively. Their zeta potentials were -22.4 ± 1.31 mV, -8.7 ± 0.45 mV, -3.1 ± 0.12 mV, respectively. Both C-NPs (15.3% PLGA remained after 2 weeks) and G-NPs (3.7% PLGA remained after 2 weeks) had higher hydrolysis rate than PLGA NPs (18.4% PLGA remained after 6 weeks), with G-NPs showing the highest rate in hydrolysis due to the incorporation of chitosan and its self-assembled structure. Self-assembling properties and controllable biodegradability of G-NPs indicated that it could be a promising drug delivery carrier for tumor drug delivery., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Oleoyl-carboxymethy-chitosan (OCMCS) nanoparticles based on chitosan with various molecular weights were prepared using coacervation process, which demonstrated particle size of 150-350 nm, zeta potential of 10-20 mV, and high encapsulation efficiency of fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FD4). OCMCS nanoparticles were found to be adsorbed onto the excised carp intestinal mucosa, the extent of adsorption increased with increasing chitosan molecular weight. In comparison to FD4 solution, OCMCS nanoparticles promoted FD4 transport through excised carp intestinal mucosa by 3.26-6.52 folds, which were observed via fluorescence microscope. The OCMCS nanoparticulate systems that interacted with the Caco-2 cells decreased the transepithelial electric resistance (TEER) and induced increasing the apparent permeability coefficient (Papp) of FD4 by 3.61-6.32 folds. Cytotoxicity studies in Caco-2 monolayers verified the safety of the delivery system. The improvement of mucoadhesive ability and permeability enable the OCMCS nanosystems suitable carriers for the intestinal absorption of protein drugs., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Oleoyl-carboxymethy chitosan (OCMCS) nanoparticles based on chitosan with different molecular weights (50, 170 and 820 kDa) were prepared by self-assembled method. The nanoparticles had spherical shape, positive surface charges and the mean diameters were 157.4, 274.1 and 396.7 nm, respectively. FITC-labeled OCMCS nanoparticles were internalized via the intestinal mucosa and observed in liver, spleen, intestine and heart following oral deliverance to carps (Cyprinus carpio). Extracellular products (ECPs) of Aeromonas hydrophila as microbial antigen was efficiently loaded to form OCMCS-ECPs nanoparticles and shown to be sustained release in PBS. Significantly higher (P < 0.05) antigen-specific antibodies were detected in serum after orally immunized with OCMCS-ECPs nanoparticles than that immunized with ECPs alone and non-immunized in control group in carps. These results implied that amphiphilic modified chitosan nanoparticles had great potential to be applied as carriers for the oral administration of protein drugs.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in improving quality of life (QOL), reducing chemotoxicity and modulating immune function in patients undergoing chemotherapy., Patients and Methods: Patients with ovarian cancer were randomized to receive either TCM or placebo in addition to standard chemotherapy. The primary outcome was global health status (GHS) score, assessed by European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer questionnaire, while the secondary outcomes were other QOL items, chemotoxicity according to World Health Organization criteria and alterations in immune function as measured by immune cells count and the numbers of cytokines-secreting cells., Results: There was no significant difference in the GHS between the two groups. With adjustment for stage, chemotherapy type, disease status, age and baseline value, emotional function, cognitive function and nausea and vomiting were found to be worse or less improved in the TCM group compared with placebo group after six cycles of chemotherapy. The TCM group had less neutropenia after three cycles (0% grade 4 neutropenia versus 28.6%). There were no other significant differences in terms of chemotoxicity. Lymphocyte counts and cytokine activities decreased less in the TCM group., Conclusions: TCM did not improve QOL but did have some effects in terms of maintaining immune function.

To study the clinical effect of catechu on oral lichen planus of erosion type.100 patients with erosive oral lichen planus were divided randomly into two groups. The experimental group were treated with catechu while the control group were treated routinely with tripterygium hypoglaucum hutch tablet. The patients in two groups underwent 2 to 3 terms of treatment respectively. The results of patients in the experimental group was significantly better than that of the control group.
