The e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{+}D_{s1}(2536)^{-} and e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{+}D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-} processes are studied using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from 4.530 to 4.946 GeV. The absolute branching fractions of D_{s1}(2536)^{-}→D[over ¯]^{*0}K^{-} and D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-}→D[over ¯]^{0}K^{-} are measured for the first time to be (35.9±4.8±3.5)% and (37.4±3.1±4.6)%, respectively. The e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{+}D_{s1}(2536)^{-} and e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{+}D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-} cross sections are measured, and a resonant structure at around 4.6 GeV with a width of 50 MeV is observed in both processes with a statistical significance of 7.2σ and 15σ, respectively. The state is observed for the first time in e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{+}D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-} and could be the Y(4626) found by the Belle oration in the D_{s}^{+}D_{s1}(2536)^{-} final state, since they have similar masses and widths. There is also evidence for a structure at around 4.75 GeV in both processes.

The J/ψ, ψ(3686)→Σ^{0}Σ[over ¯]^{0} processes and subsequent decays are studied using the world's largest J/ψ and ψ(3686) data samples collected with the BESIII detector. The parity-violating decay parameters of the decays Σ^{0}→Λγ and Σ[over ¯]^{0}→Λ[over ¯]γ, α_{Σ^{0}}=-0.0017±0.0021±0.0018 and α[over ¯]_{Σ^{0}}=0.0021±0.0020±0.0022, are measured for the first time. The strong CP symmetry is tested in the decays of the Σ^{0} hyperons for the first time by measuring the asymmetry A_{CP}^{Σ}=α_{Σ^{0}}+α[over ¯]_{Σ^{0}}=(0.4±2.9±1.3)×10^{-3}. The weak CP test is performed in the subsequent decays of their daughter particles Λ and Λ[over ¯]. Also for the first time, the transverse polarizations of the Σ^{0} hyperons in J/ψ and ψ(3686) decays are observed with opposite directions, and the ratios between the S-wave and D-wave contributions of the J/ψ, ψ(3686)→Σ^{0}Σ[over ¯]^{0} decays are obtained. These results are crucial to understand the decay dynamics of the charmonium states and the production mechanism of the Σ^{0}-Σ[over ¯]^{0} pairs.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is one of the main malignant tumors with high mortality and short survival time. Immunotherapy has become the standard treatment for advanced NSCLC, but it has the problems of drug resistance and low response rate. Therefore, obtaining effective biomarkers to predict and enhance immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) efficacy in NSCLC is important. Sphingolipid metabolism is recently found to be closely involved in tumor immunotherapy. CERS4, an important sphingolipid metabolizing enzyme, is positively correlated with the efficacy of anti-PD-1 therapy for NSCLC. Upregulation of CERS4 expression could improve the efficacy of anti-PD-1 therapy for NSCLC. High expression of CERS4 could downregulate the expression of Rhob in tumor. Significantly, the ratio of CD4 + /CD8 + T cell increased and the ratio of Tim-3 + /CD8 + T cell decreased in spleen and peripheral blood cells. When Rhob was knocked out, the efficacy of PD-1 mAb treatment increased, and the frequency of Tim-3 + CD8 + T cell decreased. This finding further confirmed the role of sphingolipid metabolites in regulating the immunotherapeutic function of NSCLC. These metabolites may improve the efficacy of PD-1 mAb in NSCLC by regulating the CERS4/Rhob/Tim-3 axis. Overall, this study provided a potential and effective target for predicting and improving the efficacy of ICIs for NSCLC. With the market development and demand change, the use of adaptive algorithms in medical devices has become a possible trend. However, some uncertainties in the adaptive algorithm itself will bring challenges to the existing current supervisory work model. This article focuses on the ademptions of US agencies on artificial intelligence device supervision, and discusses the problems that existing pilot policies may encounter when facing devices with adaptive algorithms. In this way, we will provide relevant suggestions and look forward to discussing with scholars.

In the past few decades, several gene mutations, including the anaplastic lymphoma kinase, epidermal growth factor receptor, ROS proto-oncogene 1 and rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (RAS), have been discovered in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (KRAS) is the isoform most frequently altered in RAS-mutated NSCLC cases. Due to the structural and biochemical characteristics of the KRAS protein, effective approaches to treating KRAS-mutant NSCLC still remain elusive. Extensive recent research on KRAS-mutant inhibitors has made a breakthrough in identifying the covalent KRAS G12C inhibitor as an effective agent for the treatment of NSCLC. This review mainly concentrated on introducing new covalent KRAS G12C inhibitors like sotorasib (AMG 510) and adagrasib (MRTX 849); summarizing inhibitors targeting the KRAS-related upstream and downstream effectors in RAF/MEK/ERK pathway and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway; exploring the efficacy of immunotherapy and certain emerging immune-related therapeutics such as adoptive cell therapy and cancer vaccines. These inhibitors are being investigated in clinical trials and have exhibited promising effects. On the other hand, naturally extracted compounds, which have exhibited safe and effective properties in treating KRAS-mutant NSCLC through suppressing the MAPK and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathways, as well as through decreasing PD-L1 expression in preclinical studies, could be expected to enter into clinical studies. Background: Currently, the identification of accurate biomarkers for the diagnosis of patients with early-stage lung cancer remains difficult. Fortunately, metabolomics technology can be used to improve the detection of plasma metabolic biomarkers for lung cancer. In a previous study, we successfully utilised machine learning methods to identify significant metabolic markers for early-stage lung cancer diagnosis. However, a related research platform for the investigation of tumour metabolism and drug efficacy is still lacking., Hypothesis/purpose: A novel methodology for the comprehensive evaluation of the internal tumour-metabolic profile and drug evaluation needs to be established., Methods: The optimal location for tumour cell inoculation was identified in mouse chest for the non-traumatic orthotopic lung cancer mouse model. Microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) was applied to monitor lung tumour growth. Proscillaridin A (P.A) and cisplatin (CDDP) were utilised to verify the anti-lung cancer efficacy of the platform. The top five clinically valid biomarkers, including proline, L-kynurenine, spermidine, taurine and palmitoyl-L-carnitine, were selected as the evaluation indices to obtain a suitable lung cancer mouse model for clinical metabolomics research by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS)., Results: The platform was successfully established, achieving 100% tumour development rate and 0% surgery mortality. P.A and CDDP had significant anti-lung cancer efficacy in the platform. Compared with the control group, four biomarkers in the orthotopic model and two biomarkers in the metastatic model had significantly higher abundance. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed a significant separation between the orthotopic/metastatic model and the control/subcutaneous/KRAS transgenic model. The platform was mainly involved in arginine and proline metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, and taurine and hypotaurine metabolism., Conclusion: This study is the first to simulate clinical metabolomics by comparing the metabolic phenotype of plasma in different lung cancer mouse models. We found that the orthotopic model was the most suitable for tumour metabolism. Furthermore, the anti-tumour drug efficacy was verified in the platform. Lung carcinoma is the primary reason for cancer-associated mortality, and it exhibits the highest mortality and incidence in developed and developing countries. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and SCLC are the 2 main types of lung cancer, with NSCLC contributing to 85% of all lung carcinoma cases. Conventional treatment mainly involves surgery, chemoradiotherapy, and immunotherapy, but has a dismal prognosis for many patients. Therefore, identifying an effective adjuvant therapy is urgent. Historically, traditional herbal medicine has been an essential part of complementary and alternative medicine, due to its numerous targets, few side effects and substantial therapeutic benefits. In China and other East Asian countries, traditional herbal medicine is increasingly popular, and is highly accepted by patients as a clinical adjuvant therapy. Numerous studies have reported that herbal extracts and prescription medications are effective at combating tumors. It emphasizes that, by mainly regulating the P13K/AKT signaling pathway, the Wnt signaling pathway, and the NF-κB signaling pathway, herbal medicine induces apoptosis and inhibits the proliferation and migration of tumor cells. The present review discusses the anti-NSCLC mechanisms of herbal medicines and provides options for future adjuvant therapy in patients with NSCLC.

Tongsaimai Tablets/Capsules are composed of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, Codonopsis Radix, Dendrobii Caulis, Astragali Radix, Scrophulariae Radix, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, and are effective in promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, supplementing Qi, and nourishing Yin. It is widely used in the treatment of peripheral vascular diseases. With 40 years of clinical application, it has accumulated substantial research data and application experience. Its good clinical efficacy and pharmacoeconomic benefits in improving the clinical symptoms of peripheral vascular diseases have been confirmed by relevant research. Meanwhile, this drug has also been recommended by many expert consensus, guidelines, and teaching materials, serving as one of the most commonly used Chinese patent medicines in clinical practice. To further improve the understanding of the drug among clinicians and properly guide its clinical medication, the China Association of Chinese Medicine took the lead and organized experts to jointly formulate this expert consensus. Based on the questionnaire survey of clinicians and the systematic review of research literature on Tongsaimai Tablets/Capsules with clinical problems in the PICO framework, the consensus, combined with expert experience, concludes recommendations or consensus suggestions by GRADE system with the optimal evidence available through the nominal group technique. This consensus defines the indications, usage, dosage, course of treatment, medication time, combined medication, and precautions of Tongsaimai Tablets/Capsules in the treatment of peripheral vascular diseases, and explains the safety of its clinical application. It is recommended for clinicians and pharmacists in the peripheral vascular department(vascular surgery), traditional Chinese medicine surgery(general surgery), and endocrinology department of hospitals at all levels in China.

Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer with the highest mortality rate worldwide. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for ~85% of the total number of lung cancer cases. In the past two decades, immunotherapy has become a more promising treatment method than traditional treatments (surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy). Immunotherapy has been shown to improve the survival rate of patients and to have a superior effect when controlling lung cancer than traditional therapy. However, only a small number of patients can benefit from immunotherapy, and not all patients who qualify experience long-term benefits. In the clinic, the objective response rate of programmed cell death protein 1 treatment without the prior screening of patients is only 15-20%. Immunotherapy is associated with both opportunities and challenges for patients with NSCLC. The current challenges of immunotherapy include the lack of accurate biomarkers, inevitable resistance and insufficient understanding of immune checkpoints. In previous years, several methods for overcoming the challenges posed by immunotherapy have been proposed, but combination therapy is the most suitable choice. A large number of studies have shown that the combination of drugs can significantly improve their efficacy, compared with monotherapy, and that some therapeutic combinations have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of NSCLC. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a traditional medical practice in China that can play an important role in immunotherapy. Most agents used in TCM originate from plants, and have the advantages of low toxicity and multiple targets. In addition, TCM includes a unique class of drugs that can improve autoimmunity. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a common ischaemic heart disease whose pathological mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Single target drugs, such as antiplatelet aggregation, coronary artery dilation and lipid-lowering medicines, can relieve some symptoms clinically but cannot effectively prevent and treat CHD. Accumulating evidence has revealed that alterations in GM composition, diversity, and richness are associated with the risk of CHD. The metabolites of the gut microbiota (GM), including trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and bile acids (BAs), affect human physiology by activating numerous signalling pathways. Due to the advantage of multiple components and multiple targets, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can intervene in CHD by regulating the composition of the GM, reducing TMAO, increasing SCFAs and other CHD interventions. We have searched PubMed, Web of science, Google Scholar Science Direct, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), with the use of the keywords "gut microbiota, gut flora, traditional Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, coronary heart disease". This review investigated the relationship between GM and CHD, as well as the intervention of TCM in CHD and GM, and aims to provide valuable insights for the treatments of CHD by TCM., (© 2021. Currently, conventional methods of treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have many disadvantages. An alternative effective therapy with minimal adverse reactions is urgently needed. Weijing decoction (WJD), which is a classic ancient Chinese herbal prescription, has been used successfully to treat pulmonary system diseases containing lung cancer in the clinic. However, the key active component and target of Weijing decoction are still unexplored. Therefore, for the first time, our study aims to investigate the pharmacological treatment mechanism of Weijing decoction in treating NSCLC via an integrated model of network pharmacology, metabolomics and biological methods. Network pharmacology results conjectured that Tricin is a main bioactive component in this formula which targets PRKCA to suppress cancer cell growth. Metabolomics analysis demonstrated that sphingosine-1-phosphate, which is regulated by sphingosine kinase 1 and sphingosine kinase 2, is a differential metabolite in plasma between the WJD-treated group and the control group, participating in the sphingolipid signaling. In vitro experiments demonstrated that Tricin had vital effects on the proliferation, pro-apoptosis, migration and colony formation of Lewis lung carcinoma cells. Through a series of validation assays, Tricin inhibited the tumor growth mainly by suppressing PRKCA/SPHK/S1P signaling and antiapoptotic signaling. On the other hand, Weijing formula could inhibit the tumor growth and prolong the survival time. A high dosage of Tricin was much more potent in animal experiments. Zinc finger protein 667-antisense RNA 1 (ZNF667-AS1) is a member of the C 2 H 2 zinc finger protein family. However, the exact effect of ZNF667-AS1 in uveal melanoma (UM) progression has not been elucidated. The biological roles of ZNF667-AS1 and MEGF10 were assessed using cell counting kit-8 and flow cytometry. Quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analyses were conducted to measure the expression of subjects. ZNF667-AS1 expression was significantly decreased in metastasized UM tissues and its low expression was related to poorer prognosis of UM patients. MEGF10 expression was positively associated with ZNF667-AS1 expression. The inhibitory effect of ZNF667-AS1 overexpression on UM cellular malignant behaviors could be reversed by MEGF10 knockdown, which was re-ascertained by the detection of corresponding protein levels (p53, cyclin D1, Bcl-2, and Bax). In conclusion, ZNF667-AS1 might play an inhibitory role in the development of UM by regulating cellular aggressiveness, which was partially realized by positively regulating MEGF10., (© 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

A novel actinomycete, designated strain TRM 66233 T , was isolated from Apocynum venetum L. collected from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China and characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences affiliated strain TRM 66233 T with the genus Streptomyces . Strain TRM 66233 T showed a high similarity value to Streptomyces bikiniensis NRRL B-1049 T (98.07 %) based on the 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic tree. The whole-cell sugar pattern of TRM 66233 T consisted of glucose, galactose, mannose and ribose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H 2 ), MK-9(H 6 ), MK-9(H 8 ) and MK-9(H 10 ). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and four unidentified lipids. The major fatty acids were iso -C 15 : 0 , anteiso -C 15 : 0 , iso -C 16 : 0 , C 16 : 0 and iso -C 17 : 0 . The G+C content of the DNA was 70.35 mol%. The DNA-DNA relatedness and average nucleotide identity values as well as evolutionary distances based on multilocus ( atp D, gyr B, rec A, rpo B and trp B) sequences between strain TRM 66233 T and closely related type strains were significantly lower than the recommended threshold values. The whole-genome average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain TRM 66233 T and S. bikiniensis NRRL B-1049 T were 78.86 and 23.2 %, respectively. On the basis of evidence from this polyphasic study, strain TRM 66233 T should represent a novel species of the genus Streptomyces , for which the name Streptomyces apocyni sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TRM 66233 T (=CCTCC AA 2019056 T =LMG 31559 T ).

The accumulation of palmitic acid (PA), implicated in obesity, can induce apoptotic cell death and inflammation of astrocytes. Caveolin-1 (Cav-1), an essential protein for astrocytes survival, can be degraded by autophagy, which is a double-edge sword that can either promote cell survival or cell death. The aim of this study was to delineate whether the autophagic degradation of Cav-1 is involved in PA-induced apoptosis and inflammation in hippocampal astrocytes. In this study we found that: (1) PA caused apoptotic death and inflammation by autophagic induction; (2) Cav-1 was degraded by PA-induced autophagy and PA induced autophagy in a Cav-1-independent manner; (3) the degradation of Cav-1 was responsible for PA-induced autophagy-dependent apoptotic cell death and inflammation; (4) chronic high-fat diet (HFD) induced Cav-1 degradation, apoptosis, autophagy, and inflammation in the hippocampal astrocytes of rats. Our results suggest that the autophagic degradation of Cav-1 contributes to PA-induced apoptosis and inflammation of astrocytes. Therefore, Cav-1 may be a potential therapeutic target for central nervous system injuries caused by PA accumulation.

The abnormally hyperphosphorylated tau is thought to be implicated in diabetes-associated cognitive deficits. The role of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) / S6 kinase (S6K) signalling in the formation of tau hyperphosphorylation has been previously studied. Caveolin-1 (Cav-1), the essential structure protein of caveolae, promotes neuronal survival and growth, and inhibits glucose metabolism. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of Cav-1 in the formation of tau hyperphosphorylation under chronic hyperglycemic condition (HGC). Diabetic rats were induced by streptozotocin (STZ). Primary hippocampal neurons with or without molecular intervention such as the transient over-expression or knock-down were subjected to HGC. The obtained experimental samples were analyzed by real time quantitative RT-PCR, Western blot, immunofluorescence or immunohistochemisty. We found: 1) that a chronic HGC directly decreases Cav-1 expression, increases tau phosphorylation and activates mTOR/S6K signalling in the brain neurons of diabetic rats, 2) that overexpression of Cav-1 attenuates tau hyperphosphorylation induced by chronic HGC in primary hippocampal neurons, whereas down-regulation of Cav-1 using Cav-1 siRNA dramatically worsens tau hyperphosphorylation via mTOR/S6K signalling pathway, and 3) that the down-regulation of Cav-1 induced by HGC is independent of mTOR signalling. Our results suggest that tau hyperphosphorylation and the sustained over-activated mTOR signalling under hyperglycemia may be due to the suppression of Cav-1. Therefore, Cav-1 is a potential therapeutic target for diabetes-induced cognitive dysfunction.

Background: Use of estrogen with progestin (combination therapy) is associated with increased incidence of estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer in observational studies and randomized trials among postmenopausal white women. Whether this is also the case among African American women is not established., Methods: Using data from the AMBER consortium collected from 1993 to 2013, we assessed use of estrogen alone and of combination therapy in relation to ER+ and ER-negative (ER-) breast cancer risk in postmenopausal African American women, based on 1132 ER+ case patients, 512 ER- case patients, and 6693 control patients. Odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using multinomial logistic regression with control for breast cancer risk factors., Results: Forty-seven percent of control patients had used estrogen alone, combination therapy, or both. The odds ratio for ER+ breast cancer associated with combination use, relative to never use of either estrogen alone or combination therapy, was 1.50 (95% CI = 1.25 to 1.79). The increase was greater for recent (OR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.21 to 1.99) and long-term use (OR = 1.75, 95% CI = 1.13 to 2.73) and among nonobese women (OR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.29 to 2.83). Breast cancer risk was increased regardless of the interval between onset of menopause and initiation of combination use (OR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.11 to 1.85, for <5 year interval; OR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.34 to 2.37, for ≥5 year interval). Combination use was not associated with risk of ER- breast cancer, and use of estrogen alone was not associated with risk of either ER+ or ER- breast cancer., Conclusion: Use of estrogen with progestin increases risk of ER+ breast cancer in African American women. Objective: To investigate the effect of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK) on the expression of COX-2 and caspase-3 in the substania nigra (SN) of mice with MPTP-induced Parkinson disease (PD)., Methods: C57BL/CN mice were treated with MPTP to prepare a subacute PD model, and their behavioral changes following the treatment were observed. Immunohistochemistry and Western blotting were performed to detect the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), COX-2 and phosphorylation of P38MAPK in the SN and their changes following treatment with SB203580, a specific inhibitor of P38MAPK., Results: The 7-day model group showed typical symptoms of PD with decrements of TH-positive neurons and TH protein level in the SN of the midbrain by about 65% and 75%, respectively (P<0.01). In the 3-day model group, the COX-2-, caspase-3- and phosphorylated P38MAPK-immunoreactive cells and their protein levels in the SN increased markedly with obvious loss of TH-positive neurons. Administration of SB203580 obviously lessened the above changes (P<0.01)., Conclusion: P38MAPK regulates the inflammation and apoptosis in the SN of the mouse model of subacute PD, and SB203580 may provide some neuroprotective effect.

Objective: To establish a rapid method for detecting Pseudomonas aeruginosa at the early stage of infection., Methods: Specific primers were designed according to oprI gene sequence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the specific probe was synthesized by PCR. After photosensitive biotin labeling of the bacterial DNA, reverse dot-blot hybridization was used to detect Pseudomonas aeruginosa., Results: The probe synthesized was highly specific to Pseudomonas aeruginosa without cross reaction with other bacteria, viruses or fungi. The method was capable of detecting 100 ng bacteria DNA., Conclusion: Reverse dot-blot hybridization possesses the merits of speediness and specificity in the detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the early stage of infection.

This fiber optic sensor, based on competitive immunoreactions between coating-haptens and free haptens in solutions with corresponding antibodies, was developed to determine the concentration of the free hapten, methsulfuron-methyl. The ovalbumin (OVA)-methsulfuron-methyl conjugate was immobilized on a microscope slide. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labeled goat anti-rabbit IgG was used to generate an optical signal. The portable optical device consisted of a 0.25-W tungsten-halogen light source and a photosensitive diode detector. A typical competitive-binding calibration curve was seen between 0.3 and 100 ng/ml of methsulfuron-methyl. The detection limit for methsulfuron-methyl was 0.1 ng/ml.

The relationship between the particle radius with the intensity of the applied laser radiation force is theoretically studied using a ray-optics model by analyzing the forced-status of the separated particles in the mobile phase. The laser radiation force is proportional to the square of the particle radius when the particle radius is much smaller than the laser beam radius under the condition of using a single-transverse-mode laser beam with a Gaussian intensity distribution and the particle refractive index being larger than that of the mobile phase. The retention distance is calculated and the dynamic range is discussed. Theoretically, the dynamic range of the optical chromatography can be extended by increasing laser power, decreasing the flow rate of mobile phase and focusing the laser beam.

There is a higher prevalence of peptic ulcer disease in cirrhotic patients than in the general population. Whether Helicobacter pylori is a risk factor for peptic ulcer in cirrhosis remains controversial. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a significant correlation between H.pylori infection and peptic ulcer in liver cirrhosis. In a cross-sectional study, 49 cirrhotic patients underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and 75 controls (health examinees) without liver disease were also examined by endoscopy. The presence of H. pylori was assessed by culture, histologic findings and rapid urease test of gastric antrum biopsy specimens. Thirty of the 49 (61%) cirrhotic patients had peptic ulcers as compared to 24 of the 75 (32%) controls. The frequency of H. pylori in the antrum in the cirrhotic group was significantly lower than in the control group (39% vs 69%). The presence of H. pylori was more frequent in control patients with gastric (75%) and duodenal ulcers (95%) than nonulcer control patients (59%) whereas the difference between patients with peptic ulcer and nonulcer (40% vs 37%) was not significant in cirrhotic patients. H. pylori was identified in 40% of the cirrhotic patients with duodenal ulcers compared with 95% of controls with duodenal ulcers (p < 0.05). Nevertheless, this difference was not significant among patients with a gastric ulcer between the two groups (40% vs 75%). There was no significant difference in the frequency of H. pylori infection among nonulcer patients between the cirrhotic and control groups (37% vs 59%). In conclusion, we found no evidence to substantiate an etiologic role of H. pylori in the development of a duodenal ulcer in cirrhotic patients.

Six compunds were isolated from the fresh bulbs of Allium sativum L (garlic). Their structures were elucidated as proto-iso-eruboside-B (I), eruboside-B (II), iso-eruboside-B (III), sativioside C (IV), adenosine (V) and tryptophan (VI). I and III are new steroidal saponins. This paper deals with the structural determination of I and III and their effects on platelet aggregation, blood coagulation and fibrinolysis in vitro.
