Abstract

We show evidence of the backscattering of quantum Hall edge channels in a narrow graphene Hall bar, induced by the gating effect of the conducting tip of a Scanning Gate Microscope, which we can position with nanometer precision. We show full control over the edge channels and are able, due to the spatial variation of the tip potential, to separate co-propagating edge channels in the Hall bar, creating junctions between regions of different charge carrier density, that have not been observed in devices based on top- or split-gates. The solution of the corresponding quantum scattering problem is presented to substantiate these results, and possible follow-up experiments are discussed., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

The magnetic fields in substituted hexabenzocoronenes (HBC) are effective for producing oriented films of discotic liquid-crystalline materials, which allows the investigation of structure-property relationships in magnetically aligned films formed in field-effect transistor structures in a noninvasive, contact-free way. Since the magnetic field alignment is applicable to a wide range of self-assembled systems, this approach can be used for optimizing the properties of functional materials.

Abstract

Low-temperature polarized and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy in high magnetic fields (up to 30 T) has been used to study the spin-polarization, spin-relaxation, and radiative lifetimes of excitons in wurtzite semiconductor (e.g., CdSe) colloidal nanocrystals. The applied magnetic field leads to a significant degree of circular polarization of the exciton photoluminescence, accompanied by a reduction in the photoluminescence decay time. The circular polarization arises from the Zeeman splitting of exciton levels, whereas lifetime reduction results from a polarization-preserving field-induced mixing of exciton levels. We analyze these experimental findings in terms of a simple model that combines both Zeeman effect and exciton-level mixing, as a function of the relative orientation of the nanocrystal c-axis and the magnetic field. Abstract

Light emission of semiconductor nanocrystals is a complex process, depending on many factors, among which are the quantum mechanical size confinement of excitons (coupled electron-hole pairs) and the influence of confined phonon modes and the nanocrystal surface. Despite years of research, the nature of nanocrystal emission at low temperatures is still under debate. Here we unravel the different optical recombination pathways of CdSe/CdS dot-in-rod systems that show an unprecedented number of narrow emission lines upon resonant laser excitation. By using self-assembled, vertically aligned rods and application of crystallographically oriented high magnetic fields, the origin of all these peaks is established. We observe a clear signature of an acoustic-phonon assisted transition, separated from the zero-phonon emission and optical-phonon replica, proving that nanocrystal light emission results from an intricate interplay between bright (optically allowed) and dark (optically forbidden) exciton states, coupled to both acoustic and optical phonon modes.

Abstract

Topological insulators are a new class of materials with an insulating bulk and topologically protected metallic surface states. Although it is widely assumed that these surface states display a Dirac-type dispersion that is symmetric above and below the Dirac point, this exact equivalence across the Fermi level has yet to be established experimentally. Here, we present a detailed transport study of the 3D topological insulator-strained HgTe that strongly challenges this prevailing viewpoint. First, we establish the existence of exclusively surface-dominated transport via the observation of an ambipolar surface quantum Hall effect and quantum oscillations in the Seebeck and Nernst effect. Second, we show that, whereas the thermopower is diffusion driven for surface electrons, both diffusion and phonon drag contributions are essential for the hole surface carriers. This distinct behavior in the thermoelectric response is explained by a strong deviation from the linear dispersion relation for the surface states, with a much flatter dispersion for holes compared with electrons. These findings show that the metallic surface states in topological insulators can exhibit both strong electron–hole asymmetry and a strong deviation from a linear dispersion but remain topologically protected. Abstract

The thermal motion of polymer chains in a crowded environment is anisotropic and highly confined. Whereas theoretical and experimental progress has been made, typically only indirect evidence of polymer dynamics is obtained either from scattering or mechanical response. Toward a complete understanding of the complicated polymer dynamics in crowded media such as biological cells, it is of great importance to unravel the role of heterogeneity and molecular individualism. In the present work, we investigate the dynamics of synthetic polymers and the tube-like motion of individual chains using time-resolved fluorescence microscopy. A single fluorescently labeled polymer molecule is observed in a sea of unlabeled polymers, giving access to not only the dynamics of the probe chain itself but also to that of the surrounding network. We demonstrate that it is possible to extract the characteristic time constants and length scales in one experiment, providing a detailed understanding of polymer dynamics at the single chain level. The quantitative agreement with bulk rheology measurements is promising for using local probes to study heterogeneity in complex, crowded systems.

49. Aided self-assembly of porphyrin nanoaggregates into ring-shaped architectures.

Abstract

The formation of micrometer-sized, highly ordered porphyrin rings on surfaces has been investigated. The porphyrin-based nanoarchitectures are formed by deposition from evaporating solutions through a surface dewetting process which can be tuned by variations in the substitution pattern of the molecules used, the coating of the surface and the conditions under which the evaporation takes place. Control over the combined self-assembly and surface dewetting results in nanorings possessing a defined internal architecture. The ordering of the molecules within the rings has been studied by a variety of microscopy techniques (TEM, AFM, fluorescence microscopy) and the exact ordering of the porphyrins within the rings has been quantified.
