14. Macroinvertebrate structure and trophic-functional organization in relation to environmental conditions in Dakhla Bay (southeast Morocco)

Abstract

Benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages and environmental conditions were studied in Dakhla Bay (Morocco) to (1) characterize the macroinvertebrate composition and spatial distribution, (2) provide a species inventory, and (3) to assess the key environmental variables driving the observed patterns. We identified 9,288 individuals from 67 species. The most dominant taxa were molluscs, polychaetes and crustaceans. The most abundant species were (in this order) Peringia ulvae, Bittium reticulatum, Ophelia rathkei, Mesalia mesal and Maldane sarsi, while the most frequent were (in this order) M. sarsi, Ampelisca sp., Cyathura carinata, Naineris laevigata and Chondrochelia savignyi. The spatial distribution pattern was mainly driven by sediment grain-size and Chlorophyll-a, with hydrodynamics playing also a key role. This gives rise to a structure characterized by three different station clusters, well identified in the Hierarchical Ascending Classification analysis based on abundances, which correspond to a large moderately disturbed assemblage in the centre of the bay, a more disturbed assemblage in the extremes and a transition assemblage in between.

Abstract

This study analyses the seasonal distribution in the superficial sediments of the Marchica watershed of trace and major elements, grain size, and total organic carbon. Samples were taken during the wet and dry seasons of 2018 in the mainstream valleys carrying the discharges to the Marchica Lagoon. Ecotoxicological indices (Enrichment Factor, Contamination Factor, Pollution-Load Index) and sedimen-quality guidelines were used to evaluate the ecotoxicological risk. The results revealed during both wet and dry seasons contamination by lead in all stream valleys. The northwest stream valley, characterized by some industrial activities, and the stream valley crossing the abandoned mine were the most polluted by zinc and copper. Minimal pollution for Cr, Co, and Ba was found during both the wet and dry seasons. Despite the restoration actions achieved around the Ramsar site of Marchica lagoon during the last decades, the watershed continues to have a negative impact on this ecosystem. Therefore, an environmental management strategy isnecessary, taking into account the rehabilitation of the abandoned mining sites, the rational use of pesticides and fertilizers in agriculture, and the environmental responsibility of industrial companies, especially those installed before the implementation of the national law on environmental impact studies.

36. Crustacean assemblage of Dakhla Bay: richness, diversity and temporal variability of species

Abstract

Dakhla Bay is one of the most important wetlands along the Moroccan Atlantic coastline. Studies conducted in the bay to date have mainly focused on its oceanographic features and aquaculture capacities. This paper is a report of the first study to cover all the crustacean assemblages in Dakhla Bay, its main objectives being to analyze the richness, diversity and structure of species, and their relationships with the principle environmental variables. 42 stations located across the whole bay were sampled during spring 2013 and winter 2014 using a Van Veen grab. At each station, two replicate samples were collected for macroinvertebrates and one additional replicate for sediment analyses. Single water salinity and temperature measurements were also recorded at each station. A total of 5,056 specimens were collected, allowing identification of 20 crustacean taxa. Richness, density, Shannon diversity and evenness were also estimated, to characterize the crustacean assemblage. The most abundant species in spring were Chondrochelia savignyi, Ampelisca sp., Ampithoe ramondi and Lembos cf. websteri, and in winter Ampithoe ramondi, Ampelisca sp., Cyathura carinata, Chondrochelia savignyi, and Caprella acanthifera. A cluster analysis identified three assemblages in spring and winter. This study provides new information about the structure of the soft-bottom crustacean assemblages which inhabit Dakhla Bay, and may be useful for a future impact assessment of local anthropic pressure.

Abstract

International audience; L’objectif de cette étude est de mieux cerner les conséquences des variations relatives du niveau marin sur la transformation des paysages littoraux et leurs implications sur les sociétés humaines, en nous intéressant aux Pays de la Loire. Une première estimation de la remontée du niveau marin relatif est proposée sur les deux derniers millénaires à partir de quarante points de référence marine issus de la bibliographie. Trois phases principales sont mises en évidence à plusieurs échelles temporelles : i) la hausse récente du niveau marin liée au réchauffement climatique actuel, évaluée à env. + 0.2 m depuis 200 ans ; ii) la phase finale de la transgression marine holocène, caractérisée par une élévation du niveau marin de + 1.8 m depuis 2 000 ans ; iii) une possible oscillation entre 1200 et 1700 AD, attribuable à une phase tempétueuse intense. Cependant, la donnée est encore lacunaire en Pays de la Loire, et la reconstitution est complexe car les côtes ligériennes sont macrotidales. Une définition de l’évolution des paysages retro-littoraux est mise à l’épreuve par l’analyse de cartes anciennes et de 35 carottes sédimentaires prélevées, pour détecter de nouveaux niveaux marins historiques. Une première étude montre de profondes mutations de l’évolution du paysage du Marais poitevin occidental au cours des derniers millénaires. En Baie de Bourgneuf, la modification du trait de côte et du paysage des marais rétro-littoraux est également évaluée à partir de données sédimentologiques, biologiques, archéologiques et historiques. Selon les cartes d’époque moderne, l’environnement des ports du Bec et du Collet correspondait à un bras de mer entourant l’ancienne île de Bouin, aujourd’hui continentalisée. Sur l’estran, une occupation humaine estimée au Néolithique moyen a récemment été exhumée à 1 km au large du trait de côte actuel. Ces nouvelles données viennent préciser la reconstitution des variations relatives du niveau marin au cours des derniers milliers d'années.

Abstract

Water browning or brownification refers to increasing water color, often related to increasing dissolved organic matter (DOM) and carbon (DOC) content in freshwaters. Browning has been recognized as a significant physicochemical phe-nomenon altering boreal lakes, but our understanding of its ecological consequences in different freshwater habitats and regions is limited. Here, we review the consequences of browning on different freshwater habitats, food webs and aquatic-terrestrial habitat coupling. We examine global trends of browning and DOM/DOC, and the use of remote sensing as a tool to investigate browning from local to global scales. Studies have focused on lakes and rivers while sel-dom addressing effects at the catchment scale. Other freshwater habitats such as small and temporary waterbodies have been overlooked, making the study of the entire network of the catchment incomplete. While past research inves-tigated the response of primary producers, aquatic invertebrates and fishes, the effects of browning on macrophytes, invasive species, and food webs have been understudied. Research has focused on freshwater habitats without consid-ering the fluxes between aquatic and terrestrial habitats. We highlight the importance of understanding how the changes in one habitat may cascade to another. Browning is a broader phenomenon than the heretofore concentration on the boreal region. Overall, we propose that future studies improve the ecological understanding of browning through the following research actions: 1) increasing our knowledge of ecological processes of browning in other wetland types than lakes and rivers, 2) assessing the impact of browning on aquatic food webs at multiple scales, 3) examining the effects of browning on aquatic-terrestrial habitat coupling, 4) expanding our knowledge of browning from the local to global scale, and 5) using remote sensing to examine browning and its ecological consequences.

Abstract

International audience; This research, funded by La Fondation de France, aims to: 1) retrace thehistory of marine submersion in western France using multidisciplinary approaches, 2)assess the quantitative and qualitative impacts of these events on coastal societies, and3) define the notion of “societal resilience” through the historical prism. Themethodology is based on an interdisciplinary approach integrating sedimentology (21sedimentary cores were taken) and climate history (19 691 unpublished historicaldocuments were examined and analyzed). The spatial and temporal framework of thestudy is the French Atlantic coast, and it covers a period ranging from the 14th centuryto the present day. The coupling of sedimentological data with historical archives hasmade it possible to characterize fifteen storms with marine submersions. The results ofthis research bear witness to the adaptability of populations and their tolerance to therisk of marine submersion throughout history. These different approaches make itpossible to increase knowledge of coastal hazards, to contribute to their prevention andto propose prospective tools for the management of coastal risks.; Cette recherche, financée par la Fondation de France, avait pour objectifs :1) de retracer l’histoire des submersions marines dans l’ouest de la France à l’aided’approches pluridisciplinaires, 2) d’évaluer les impacts quantitatifs et qualitatifs deces évènements sur les sociétés littorales, et 3) de définir la notion de « résiliencesociétale » sous le prisme historique. La méthodologie repose sur une approcheinterdisciplinaire intégrant la sédimentologie (21 carottes sédimentaires ont étéprélevées) et l’histoire du climat (19 691 documents historiques ont été dépouillés etanalysés). Le cadre spatio-temporel de l'étude sur la façade atlantique française etcouvre une période allant du XIVe siècle à nos jours. Le couplage des donnéessédimentologiques avec les archives historiques a permis de caractériser quinzetempêtes avec submersions marines. Les résultats de cette recherche témoignent del’adaptabilité des populations et de leur tolérance au risque de submersion marine àtravers l’histoire. Ces différentes approches permettent d’accroître la connaissance desaléas côtiers, de contribuer à leur prévention et de proposer des outils prospectifs pourla gestion des risques littoraux.

Abstract

International audience; In the current context of climate change, crossing analyses of the palaeoenvironmental and paleosocietal evolution of a vulnerable coastal area illustrates the different forms of human occupations that have been linked to their environment during the last millenaries. A sedimentological analysis combined with historical maps allows us to rebuild and date precisely the evolution of the major paleolandscapes of the Marais Poitevin western border. This analysis confirms that this territory has deeply changed, especially during Antiquity and the early-Middle Ages, when the ancient maritime gulf turned into a marsh that is nowadays infilled. The evolution of historical human occupation is simultaneously qualified thanks to geoarcheological data. Remains of old fisheries and enstonements were identified next to rocky spots. They testify about an historical human occupation of the former islands, where people were protected from coastal hazards.; Dans le contexte actuel du changement climatique, l’analyse croisée de l’évolution paléoenvironnementale et paléosociétale d’un secteur littoral vulnérable illustre différentes formes d’occupations humaines liées à leur environnement durant les derniers millénaires. Une analyse sédimentologique couplée avec des cartographies historiques permet de reconstruire et de dater finement l’évolution des principaux paléopaysages de la bordure ouest du Marais poitevin. Cette analyse confirme que cet espace a profondément évolué, notamment durant l’Antiquité et le début du Moyen Âge, périodes durant lesquelles l’ancien golfe maritime s’est transformé en un marais aujourd’hui colmaté. En parallèle, l’évolution de l’occupation humaine historique est qualifiée par des données géoarchéologiques. Des vestiges d’anciennes pêcheries et empierrements ont été identifiés à proximité des points rocheux. Ils témoignent d’une occupation humaine historique dans les anciennes îles, au sein desquelles les Hommes se trouvaient en sécurité face aux aléas météo-marins.
