2SamenvattingDe afgelopen jaren hebben verschillende Nederlandse financiële instellingen onder de noemer van ‘purpose’de eigen rol in de samenleving geherdefinieerd. Sustainable Finance Lab (SFL)en De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB)hebben gezamenlijk een verkennende analyse uitgevoerd naar de (potentiële) betekenis hiervan. Hiertoe zijn gesprekken gevoerd met bestuurders en betrokken professionals bij grotere financiëleinstellingen en hun adviseurs. Ook is een literatuurstudie verricht. Deze notitie geeft een overzicht van de bevindingen. Doel is de opgedane inzichten breder te delen en zo een aanzet te geven voor nadere gedachtenvorming over het onderwerp.Van belang is daarbij op te merken dat wij niet een uitputtend literatuuronderzoek hebben gedaan. Vanuit het begrip ‘purpose’ hebben we verschillende (wetenschappelijke) gebieden verkend. Nader onderzoek zal zeker verdieping geven en wellicht ook kanttekeningen opleveren. Niettemin denken wij dat ons overzicht handvatten kan bieden om het denken over werken met een purpose binnen financiële instellingen te stimuleren. Voor deze notitie hebben wij als uitgangspunt genomen dat de purpose voor organisaties een richtinggevend baken kan zijn in een volatiele, snel veranderende, complexe en onzekere wereld. In dit uitgangspunt valt de purpose van de organisatie samen met haar bestaansrecht, heeft het als doel alle bij de organisatie verbonden stakeholderbelangen in zich te verenigen en belichaamt het de rol van de organisatie in een bredere economischeenmaatschappelijke context. Uit dit uitgangspunt vloeit tevens voort dat depurpose voor iedere organisatie situatief is; het is voor iedere organisatie van belang dat zij voor zichzelf een duidelijke purpose formuleert,uitgaande van de eigen cultuur, sterktes, zwaktes en uitdagingen. Mede vanwege de maatschappelijke oriëntatie van het begrip ‘purpose’, kan het van bijzondere waarde zijn voor de financiële sector. Deze sector worstelt immers sinds de financiële crisis van 2008 met de vraag op welke wijze haar dienstverlening het publieke belang beter kan dienen. Een heldere purpose kan richtinggevendzijn. Daarvoor mag een purpose niet een papieren statement blijven, maar moet deze in alle geledingen van de onderneming wordendoorgevoerd. Als financiële instellingen er ook daadwerkelijk consistent naar handelen, dan kan dat een bijdrage leveren aan het herstel van het publiekevertrouwen.De interviews hebben ons laten zien dat veel financiële instellingen serieus bezig zijn met het definiëren van hun purpose c.q. het inbedden daarvanin hun organisaties. Daarbij staan zij wel voor de nodige uitdagingen. Er bestaat namelijk nog veel onduidelijkheid over de vraag wat een purpose is, of en waarom het van waarde zou zijnvoor de duurzaamheidvan de financiële sector en wat de implicaties zijn voor de structuur en de cultuur van de organisatie.Zo bleek uit ons literatuuronderzoek dat ‘purpose’een veelzijdig begrip is, zonder eenduidigedefinitie en met veel raakvlakken naar andere onderwerpen, zoals ESG, strategic alignment, innovatief vermogen en ethisch leiderschap. Ook bleek uit het onderzoek dat er verschillende manieren zijn waarop de purpose van een organisatie geïdentificeerd, gedefinieerd en geïmplementeerd kan worden. Waarbij dealgemene lijn in de door ons onderzochte literatuur is dat purpose-driven ondernemennaasthet leveren van een positieve bijdrage aan de maatschappijook kan bijdragen aan het bedrijfsresultaat, het innovatief vermogen, de complianceen de betrokkenheid van klanten en medewerkers. En dat deze positieve bijdragen via meerdere kanalen en mechanismen verlopen. Daarbij is van belang dat een purpose consistent wordt vertaald door de hele organisatie, van leiderschap en beloningssystemen tot aannamebeleid.
