In previous research, PWA have reported that self-advocacy statements, including self-advocacy scripts, facilitate their interactions with unfamiliar CPs. To understand the benefits of self-advocacy scripts, it is important to directly investigate how unfamiliar CPs respond to them.The aim of this study was to characterize the thoughts and emotions reported by unfamiliar adults after listening to self-advocacy scripts produced by speakers with Broca’s aphasia and apraxia of speech.This experimental study included 238 adult research participants without aphasia. Each participant was randomly assigned to listen to one script produced by a speaker with Broca’s aphasia and apraxia of speech: either a self-advocacy script or a control script about the weather that does not mention the speaker’s aphasia. Then, they answered one open-ended question (analyzed using a codebook approach) and eight rating scale questions (analyzed using Bayesian linear regression) about the thoughts and emotions they experienced while listening to the speaker.Compared to the control script, the self-advocacy script improved listeners’ knowledge about the speakers’ condition, their perception of the speakers’ intelligence, and their patience and empathy for the speakers.Aphasia self-advocacy scripts can have powerful, positive effects on unfamiliar listeners. The present results highlight the importance of providing support in clinical practice for collaborative development of self-advocacy scripts between people with aphasia and their clinicians. Porcelain, or calcified, gallbladder is a finding rarely identified in archaeologically excavated remains. This study reports on an ovoid calcification found in the torso of adult skeleton from an early 20th‐century mental asylum cemetery in Mississippi. The calcified object was imaged using conventional x‐ray and computerized tomographic (CT) scanning (standard and micro), which produced images consistent with those of a clinically diagnosed porcelain gallbladder containing a single large gallstone. The aim of this paper is to raise awareness of this medical condition, which may not be familiar to most anthropologists, and of the efficacy of CT scanning for the identification of calcified gallbladders, which may increase the number of cases reported in archaeological literature and provide more information about the prevalence of this condition, and gallbladder disease in general, in past populations. Purpose: The present study tested whether (and how) language treatment changed online sentence processing in individuals with aphasia. Method: Participants with aphasia (n = 10) received a 12-week program of Treatment of Underlying Forms (Thompson & Shapiro, 2005) focused on production and comprehension of passive sentences. Before and after treatment, participants performed a sentence-picture matching task with active and passive sentences as eye movements were tracked. Twelve age-matched controls also performed the task once each. Results: In the age-matched group, eye movements indicated agent-first predictive processing after hearing the subject noun, followed by rapid thematic reanalysis after hearing the verb form. Pretreatment eye movements in the participants with aphasia showed no predictive agent-first processing, and more accurate thematic analysis in active compared to passive sentences. After treatment, which resulted in improved offline passive sentence production and comprehension, participants were more likely to respond correctly when they made agent-first eye movements early in the sentence, showed equally reliable thematic analysis in active and passive sentences, and were less likely to use a spatially based alternative response strategy. Conclusions: These findings suggest that treatment focused on improving sentence production and comprehension supports the emergence of more normal-like sentence comprehension processes.

Previous research has shown that usage preferences (non-categorical constraints on the distribution of syntactic structures) shape many grammatical alternations. In the present study, we show that usage preferences also influence which alternate listeners report hearing when presented with acoustically degraded input. We investigated the English expletive/null subject alternation in sentences such as "(It) seems like things are going well." We hypothesized that this alternation is shaped by pragmatic constraints: sentences with null (zero) subjects tend to express immediate judgments, i.e., judgments that the speaker has just formed at utterance time. A corpus study supported this hypothesis, revealing that the relative frequency of zero sentences is higher in temporally immediate (i.e., present tense) sentences than in non-immediate (i.e., past tense) sentences. A speech restoration experiment demonstrated that listeners are sensitive to this constraint. In that study, participants listened to short dialogues that varied with respect to immediacy, concluding with a sentence with an acoustically distorted expletive subject. Participants reported hearing zero sentences more often in immediate contexts. The results suggest that usage preferences influence what listeners think they are processing. (Contains 8 tables.)

This study reports the results of a longitudinal study examining the effects of treatment for sentence processing deficits for a 70-year-old gentleman (DK) with the agrammatic variant of Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). On entry into the study, he presented with a 2-year history of impaired verb and sentence processing and concomitant neural atrophy in primarily subcortical regions. Spanning an 18-month period, treatment focused on improving comprehension and production of syntactically complex, passive and object cleft, structures, consecutively. Results, derived from extensive behavioral and neurocognitive testing, showed not only improved ability to comprehend and produce both trained and untrained, less complex, linguistically related structures in offline tasks, but also improved online sentence processing strategies as revealed by partially normalized eye movements in online comprehension (i.e., emergence of thematic prediction and thematic integration) and production (i.e., use of incremental processing) tasks. Changes in neural activation from pre- to post-treatment of both structures also were found, with upregulation of tissue in both the left and right hemispheres, overlapping with regions recruited by neurotypical adults performing the same task. These findings indicate that Treatment of Underlying Forms (TUF) is effective for treatment of patients with the agrammatic variant of PPA (as it is for those with stroke-induced agrammatism), and show that unaffected neural tissue in patients with PPA is malleable and may be recruited to support language, providing evidence of experience-based plasticity in neurodegenerative disease.
