Abstract

The First International Conference in Systems and Network Medicine gathered together 200 global thought leaders, scientists, clinicians, academicians, industry and government experts, medical and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and policymakers. Held at Georgetown University Conference Center in Washington D.C. on September 11-13, 2019, the event featured a day of pre-conference lectures and hands-on bioinformatic computational workshops followed by two days of deep and diverse scientific talks, panel discussions with eminent thought leaders, and scientific poster presentations. Topics ranged from: Systems and Network Medicine in Clinical Practice; the role of -omics technologies in Health Care; the role of Education and Ethics in Clinical Practice, Systems Thinking, and Rare Diseases; and the role of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. The conference served as a unique nexus for interdisciplinary discovery and dialogue and fostered formation of new insights and possibilities for health care systems advances.

The article discusses the life and work of Egbert Ludovicus Viele, a relatively unknown engineer who played a significant role in shaping New York City. Viele's hand-colored map of Manhattan's waterways from 1865 provided valuable information on flooding, unstable ground, and drainage. Despite his contributions to the city, Viele's name is not widely recognized, with Frederick Law Olmsted often receiving credit for designing Central Park. Viele's activism focused on sanitation, engineering, and health, and he believed in the importance of preserving Manhattan's natural topography. 31. Narrative and epistemic positioning: the case of the Dandelion pilot

Abstract

This chapter introduces philosophers of engineering to a new research agenda currently permeating the history and philosophy of science, one concerned with the functions of narrative in science. The functions of narrative that I am here interested in contribute to two particular kinds of epistemic positioning. First, that of the individual researcher’s epistemic position in relation to a field of inquiry. Second, the positioning of a community of researchers gathered around and looking at newly acquired evidence, assessing its significance. In the first, the kind of inference and hypothesis making that narrative affords stimulates and orders inquiry. In the second, narrative supplies a means of reasoning from the particulars of a case to something deeper or broader. The case analysed concerns an interdisciplinary project between engineers, applied mathematicians, and biologists dedicated to understanding how dandelion seeds fly. My analysis draws on the concepts of ‘tellability’ from literary study and ‘synoptic judgment’ from the philosophy of history. Tellability is used to explore question generation in science and engineering, in particular the making of more or less ‘askable’ questions. Synoptic judgement is used to interrogate my own case, key elements of which resemble synoptic judgement without assimilating to it.
