15. Differences Between Pullover and Pulldown Exercises on Maximal Isometric Force and Myoelectric Activity in Recreationally-Trained Men

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to compare the myoelectric activation and peak force (PF) between pullover (PO) and pulldown (PW) exercises in different shoulder joint positions during maximal isometric contractions (0o, 45o, 90o, 135o, and 180°). Fifteen young, healthy, resistance-trained men were recruited. The participants performed three maximal voluntary isometric contractions for each exercise at five shoulder joint positions. The myoelectric activation (iEMG) from pectoralis major (PM); latissimus dorsi (LD); posterior deltoid (PD), and PF were measured. For PF, there were significant main effects for exercise and joint positions (p < 0.001). For iEMG PM, there was significant a main effect for joint positions (p < 0.001). There was a significant interaction between exercises and joint positions (p < 0.001). For iEMG LD, there was a significant main effect for joint positions (p < 0.001). There was no significant interaction between exercises and joint positions. For iEMG PD, there was a significant main effect for joint positions (p < 0.001). There was no significant interaction between exercises and joint positions. For RPE, there were no significant differences between exercises and joint positions. The study concludes that specific shoulder joint positions affect PF production and iEMG during both exercises. RPE was not affected.

20. Temperature Calibration for Distributed Temperature Sensing of Printed Circuit Boards Using Optical Fiber Sensors

Abstract

The work investigates the procedures for temperature calibration of optical fiber sensors (OFSs), implemented on printed circuit boards (PCBs), aiming to accomplish accurate distributed temperature measurements, during temperature cycles. The OFSs are interrogated by optical frequency-domain reflectometry, OFDR, which provides plenty of sensing points using a single OF. For temperature measurements, it was used a polyimide-coated optical fiber within a PTFE sleeve and conventional type-K thermocouples, as a temperature reference. Samples with different OFS dispositions were placed in a static oven under distinct programmed temperature profiles. The temperature calibration correlates the OFS signal frequency shift to the temperature profile registered by reference thermocouples. The proposed calibration methodology results in temperature measurement with low error (±1 °C/3%). Different calibration fittings were obtained depending upon the type of OF configuration and temperature profile used (temperature ranges and rates) since some calibration curves showed an undesired “bow effect” (hysteresis), which appears to be dependent on the heating/cooling rates. The results of OF within PTFE sleeve, bonded to a PCB and covered with aluminum tape, present smaller deviations and a more stable signal. Nevertheless, the calibration of OFS for distributed temperature measurements is still dependent on application-oriented calibration adjustment.

Abstract

Objective Cognitive dysfunction in fibromyalgia has become a key symptom considered by patients as more disabling than pain itself. Experimental evidence from neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies indicates that such cognitive impairments are especially robust when patients need to set in motion working memory processes, suggesting the existence of an altered functioning underlying the cerebral cortices of the frontoparietal memory network. However, the temporal dynamics of working memory subprocesses have not yet been explored in fibromyalgia. Subjects Thirty-six right-handed women participated in the experiment, comprising 18 patients with fibromyalgia and 18 healthy controls. Methods Event-related potentials (ERPs) and behavioral responses were recorded while participants were engaged in a two-back working memory task. Principal component analyses were used to define and quantify the ERP components associated with working memory processes. Results Patients with fibromyalgia exhibited worse performance than the control group, as revealed by their number of errors in the working memory task. Moreover, both scalp parieto-occipital P2 and parieto-occipital P3 amplitudes were lower for patients than for healthy control participants. Regression analyses revealed that lower P3 amplitudes were observed in those patients with fibromyalgia reporting higher pain ratings. Conclusions The present results suggest that both encoding of information (as reflected by P2) and subsequently context updating and replacement (as seen in lower P3 amplitudes), as a part of working memory subprocesses, are impaired in fibromyalgia. Studying the temporal dynamics of working memory through the use of ERP methodology is a helpful approach to detect specific impaired cognitive mechanisms in this chronic pain syndrome. Abstract

The manipulation of the volume and intensity of static stretching (SS) can affect the range of motion (ROM) and muscle force output. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of two different SS protocols with different intensities (50% and 85% POD) and volumes (120-s and 240-s) on ROM, peak force, and muscle activity during maximal isometric leg curl exercise in well-trained participants. Fifteen young males (age:27.5 ± 6.1years, height:175.6 ± 4.7cm, and body mass:81.5 ± 10.4kg, 6 ± 2 years of resistance training experience) performed passive hip flexion with two different SS protocols: six stretches of 40-s, with 15-sec rest between each stretch at 50% of the point of discomfort (POD) and three stretches of 40-s, with 15-sec rest between each stretch at 85%POD. The passive hip flexion ROM, biceps femoris muscle activation (integrated electromyography: IEMG), and knee flexors force were monitored during a 3-s maximal voluntary isometric leg curl exercise. ROM increased between pre- and post-intervention for both SS protocols (50%POD: p = 0.016, Δ% = 4.6% and 85%POD: p < 0.001, Δ% = 11.42%). Peak force decreased between pre- and post-intervention only for 85%POD (p = 0.004, Δ% = 23.6%). There were no significant IEMG differences. Abstract

A comparison was made between English- and Malay-speaking students using a Group Decision Support System (GDSS) developed by the University of Mississippi in problem solving. The GDSS was designed for the benefit of users who speak a language which makes use of the Roman alphabet. Results revealed that American and Malaysian students did not differ significantly and displayed low evaluation apprehension, low production blocking and high satisfaction.

[ES]El efecto de costo irrecuperable (ECI) ha sido definido como una tendencia a elegir o continuar un curso de acción una vez que se ha hecho una inversión previa de dinero, tiempo o esfuerzo. El objetivo de esta investigación fue la aplicación, con leves variaciones, del experimento original de efecto de costo irrecuperable en una muestra de 108 estudiantes universitarios de varias titulaciones con una media de edad de 28.79 (DT= 11.34), donde el 62% eran mujeres y el 38% hombres. Los resultados confirman la existencia del Efecto de Costo Irrecuperable en dicha muestra, aunque el término ECI deja abierto un abanico a posibles controversias que se han tenido en cuenta a la hora de establecer las conclusiones de esta investigación
