1. Training DNN Models over Heterogeneous Clusters with Optimal Performance

Abstract

Adjusting batch sizes and adaptively tuning other hyperparameters can significantly speed up deep neural network (DNN) training. Despite the ubiquity of heterogeneous clusters, existing adaptive DNN training techniques solely consider homogeneous environments. Optimizing distributed DNN training over heterogeneous clusters is technically challenging, and directly adapting existing techniques results in low utilization and poor performance. To solve this problem, we introduce Cannikin -- a novel data-parallel distributed training system. Cannikin achieves efficient and near-optimal performance by accurately modeling the optimal system performance and predicting adaptive batch size training metrics for DNNs in heterogeneous clusters. We implemented Cannikin in PyTorch and conducted experiments over 16 GPUs in Chameleon. Empirical results show that Cannikin reduces DNN training in heterogeneous clusters by up to $52\%$ compared to the state-of-the-art adaptive training system and up to $85\%$ compared to native PyTorch DistributedDataParallel.

Abstract

In an era of countless content offerings, recommender systems alleviate information overload by providing users with personalized content suggestions. Due to the scarcity of explicit user feedback, modern recommender systems typically optimize for the same fixed combination of implicit feedback signals across all users. However, this approach disregards a growing body of work highlighting that (i) implicit signals can be used by users in diverse ways, signaling anything from satisfaction to active dislike, and (ii) different users communicate preferences in different ways. We propose applying the recent Interaction Grounded Learning (IGL) paradigm to address the challenge of learning representations of diverse user communication modalities. Rather than requiring a fixed, human-designed reward function, IGL is able to learn personalized reward functions for different users and then optimize directly for the latent user satisfaction. 11. Comparison of Questionnaire and Performance‐Based Physical Frailty Scales to Predict Survival and Health‐Related Quality of Life in Patients With Heart Failure

Abstract

Background Frailty is prevalent in older adults with heart failure and is associated with poor outcomes; however, there remains uncertainty on how to measure frailty in clinical practice. Methods and Results A multicentric prospective cohort study was assembled at 4 heart failure clinics to compare the prognostic value of 3 physical frailty scales in ambulatory patients with heart failure. Outcomes were all‐cause death or hospitalization and health‐related quality of life using the 36‐Item Short Form survey questionnaire (SF‐36) at 3 months. Multivariable regression was adjusted for age, sex, Meta‐Analysis Global Group in Chronic Heart Failure score, and baseline SF‐36 score. The cohort included 215 patients (mean age 77.6 years). All 3 frailty scales were independently associated with death or hospitalization at 3 months; the adjusted odds ratios standardized per 1 SD worsening of the Short Physical Performance Battery; Fried, and strength, assistance with walking, rising from a chair, climbing stairs, and falls scales were 1.67 (95% CI, 1.09–2.55), 1.60 (95% CI, 1.04–2.46), and 1.55 (95% CI, 1.03–2.35), respectively, with C statistics of 0.77 to 0.78. All 3 frailty scales were independently associated with worsening SF‐36 scores, especially the Short Physical Performance Battery, for which 1 SD worsening of frailty translated to a decrement of −5.86 (−8.55 to −3.17) and −5.51 (−7.82 to −3.21) points in the Physical Component Score and Mental Component Score. Conclusions All 3 physical frailty scales were associated with death, hospitalization, and reduced health‐related quality of life in ambulatory patients with heart failure. Questionnaire or performance‐based physical frailty scales can be used to offer prognostic value and a therapeutic target in this vulnerable population. Abstract

This paper studies the online energy scheduling problem in a hybrid model where the cost of energy is proportional to both the volume and peak usage, and where energy can be either locally generated or drawn from the grid. Inspired by recent advances in online algorithms with Machine Learned (ML) advice, we develop parameterized deterministic and randomized algorithms for this problem such that the level of reliance on the advice can be adjusted by a trust parameter. We then analyze the performance of the proposed algorithms using two performance metrics: robustness that measures the competitive ratio as a function of the trust parameter when the advice is inaccurate, and consistency for competitive ratio when the advice is accurate. Since the competitive ratio is analyzed in two different regimes, we further investigate the Pareto optimality of the proposed algorithms. Our results show that the proposed deterministic algorithm is Pareto-optimal, in the sense that no other online deterministic algorithms can dominate the robustness and consistency of our algorithm. Furthermore, we show that the proposed randomized algorithm dominates the Pareto-optimal deterministic algorithm. Our large-scale empirical evaluations using real traces of energy demand, energy prices, and renewable energy generations highlight that the proposed algorithms outperform worst-case optimized algorithms and fully data-driven algorithms.

Abstract

This study expands our understanding of how school day schedules affect achievement. We focus on three aspects related to scheduling: student fatigue, time of instruction, and instructor schedules. Data cover five academic years at the United States Air Force Academy, where schedules are randomized, grading is standardized, and there is substantial variance in schedule structure. Analyzing over 180,000 student-course outcomes, we find causal evidence of cognitive fatigue brought on by scheduling multiple courses in a row. The expected performance of two students in the same class may differ by as much as 0.15 standard deviations simply owing to their prior schedules. All else equal, students perform better in the afternoon than in the early morning. We also note that instruction improves with repetition. Heterogeneous effects by ability suggest that overall gains are possible. Prioritizing certain schedules would be equivalent to improving teacher quality by one-third of a standard deviation. A reorganization of students’ daily school schedules is a promising and potentially low-cost educational intervention.

Abstract

In the face of shrinking government budgets and a growing need to train a high-skilled labor force, policymakers have become increasingly interested in cost-effective measures that induce more students to apply to and enroll in college. In this paper, we use a regression discontinuity design to identify the causal effect of students receiving information about their own college-readiness after taking the ACT on their subsequent college enrollment decisions. Using data from Colorado, where all high school students are required to take the ACT, we find that students who receive information that they are college-ready are no more likely to attend college than those that do not receive this information. We discuss possible reasons for these findings.

This paper examines the determinants of parental decisions about infant immunization. Using the exact timing of vaccination relative to birth, we estimate the effects of local pertussis outbreaks occurring in-utero and during the first two months of life on the likelihood of on-time initial immunization for pertussis and other immunizations. We find that parents respond to changes in perceived disease risk: pertussis outbreaks within a state increase the rate of on-time receipt of the pertussis vaccine at two months of age. This response is concentrated among low-socioeconomic status (SES) subgroups. In addition, we find that pertussis outbreaks increase the likelihood of immunization against other vaccine-preventable diseases. These spillover effects are almost as large the direct effects and are present only for vaccines that are typically given during the same visit as the pertussis vaccine, which suggests that healthcare access costs play an important role in parents' vaccination decisions.

Abstract

Recent sleep research finds that many adolescents are sleep-deprived because of both early school start times and changing sleep patterns during the teen years. This study identifies the causal effect of school start time on academic achievement by using two policy changes in the daily schedule at the US Air Force Academy along with the randomized placement of freshman students to courses and instructors. Results show that starting the school day 50 minutes later has a significant positive effect on student achievement, which is roughly equivalent to raising teacher quality by one standard deviation. {JEL 123, J13) weekday morning, most high school students are sitting in their first period class by 7:30 AM.While some students may be raring to go, many are struggling to stay awake and alert. In fact, survey evidence shows that over a quarter of high school students report falling asleep in class at least once per week (National Sleep Foundation 2006). As parents and administrators look for ways to improve student academic achievement, some question whether early start times are hindering the learning process for teenagers. Sleep research supports this notion, finding that many adolescents are sleep-deprived because of both early school start times and changing sleep patterns during the teen years. Consequently, policy initiatives to delay high school start times have gained momentum across the country. At the national level, House Concurrent Resolution 176, introduced to Congress in 2007 as the "Zzz's to As Resolution," calls for secondary schools to begin after 9:00 am. State legislatures and local school districts have also introduced similar proposals. Although some districts have adopted later start times, most were forced to maintain the status quo as a result of conflicting bussing schedules or vehement opposition from coaches and skeptical parents.

Abstract

The binomial expansion technique originally proposed by Moody9s has been widely adopted as the standard technique for assessing the risk of CBO/CLO tranches. The key assumption underlying it is the non-variability of recovery rates. A comparison with the results produced by Monte Carlo simulation assuming stochastic recovery rates indicates rating differentials of up to five rating notches in ratings of CBO/CLO tranches that are attributable to the recovery rate assumption. Some adjustments to constant recovery rates would make the ratings indicated by the BET more consistent with the results of Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract

We find evidence of suboptimal decisions leading to underperformance in a policy experiment where two teams of professionals compete in a tournament (National Hockey League shootout) performing a task (penalty shot) sequentially. Before an exogenous policy change, home teams had to perform the task second in the sequence. After the policy change, home teams were given the choice to lead or to follow in the sequence. Home teams should move first only when this is optimal, and this should lead them to winning the tournament more often. We find that after given the choice, home teams most of the time choose to move first in the sequence, and this results in a lower winning frequency for them. Contrary to what economic theory would predict, we find that an expanded choice set can lead to worse outcomes for the agents.

Abstract

The combination of changing sleep patterns in adolescence and early school start times leaves secondary school classrooms filled with sleep-deprived students. Evidence is growing that having adolescents start school later in the morning improves grades and emotional well-being, and even reduces car accidents. Opponents cite costly adjustments to bussing schedules and decreased time after school for jobs, sports, or other activities as reasons to retain the status quo. While changing school start times is not a costless policy, it is one of the easiest to implement and least expensive ways of improving academic achievement.

Abstract

We search for the flavor-changing neutral current decays of the top quark $t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}q\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{qZ}$ (here $q$ represents the $c$ and $u$ quarks) in $\overline{p}p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$. We use a dataset $(\ensuremath{\int}L\mathrm{dt}\ensuremath{\sim}110{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1})$ collected during the 1992--1995 run of the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We set 95% confidence level limits on the branching fractions $B(t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}q\ensuremath{\gamma})l3.2%$ and $B(t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{qZ})l33%$, consistent with the standard model.

Abstract

We present the first general measurements (invariant-mass, transverse-energy, and angular distributions) of the process, {bar p}p{r_arrow}{gamma}+2 jets+X, using data collected by the CDF at Fermilab. We compare the data with predictions from a tree-level QCD calculation and the PYTHIA shower Monte Carlo program. Our data sample is particularly sensitive to contributions from initial- and final-state radiation of photons and jets. Using the PYTHIA Monte Carlo program, we contrast the kinematical distributions for direct photon production with those for initial- and final-state photon radiation (bremsstrahlung). Based on the angular distributions, we find that our data favor a mixture of bremsstrahlung and direct photon production, as predicted, over either process alone. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

We present a study of events with W bosons and hadronic jets produced in {ovr p}p collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data consist of 51 400 W{sup +-}{yields}e{sup +-}{nu} decay candidates from 108 pb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Cross sections and jet production properties have been measured for W+{>=}1 to {>=}4 jet events. The data are compared to predictions of leading-order QCD matrix element calculations with added gluon radiation and simulated parton fragmentation.

Abstract

We present the results of a search for first generation scalar leptoquarks pairs (S-1 (S)over-bar(1)) in 110 +/- 7 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume both leptoquarks decay to an electron and a quark. Three candidate events, with masses below 140 GeV/c(2) and consistent with background expectations, are observed. We obtain a 95% confidence level upper limit on the production cross section as a function of the leptoquark mass. Using a next-to-leading order calculation of S-1 (S)over-bar(1) production, we exclude scalar leptoquarks with mass less than 213 GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L. for a branching ratio into eq equal to 1.
