11. Characterization of picosecond pulse nonlinear propagation in chalcogenide [As.sub.2][S.sub.3] fiber

Abstract

We characterize the nonlinear propagation of picosecond pulses in chalcogenide [As.sub.2][S.sub.3] single-mode fiber using a pump-probe technique. The cross-phase modulation (XPM)-induced sideband broadening and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS)-induced sideband amplification are measured in order to map out the Raman gain spectrum of this glass across the C-band. We extract the Raman response function from the Raman gain spectrum and determine the power and polarization dependence of the SRS. In contrast to previous work using [As.sub.2][Se.sub.3] fiber, we find that the [As.sub.2][S.sub.3] fiber does not suffer from large two-photon absorption (TPA) in the wavelength range of the telecommunications band. We achieved a 20 dB peak Raman gain at a Stokes shift of 350 [cm.sup.-1] in a 205 mm length of [As.sub.2][S.sub.3] single-mode fiber. The Raman gain coefficient is estimated to be 4.3 x [10.sup.-12] m/W and the threshold pump peak power is estimated to be 16.2 W for the 205 mm [As.sub.2][S.sub.3] fiber. We also demonstrate that we can infer the dispersion of the [As.sub.2][S.sub.3] fiber and justify the Raman response function by comparing simulation and experimental results. Identification of relevant types of hazards at the appropriate temporal and spatial scale is crucial to detect their sources and origin, to understand the processes governing their magnitude and distribution, and to ultimately evaluate and manage their risks and consequences preventing economic losses. SCHeMA aims to provide an open and modular sensing solution for autonomous in situ high resolution mapping of a range of anthropogenic and natural chemical compounds coupled to master bio-physicochemical parameters. User-friendly data discovery, access and download as well as interoperability with other projects will be achieved via dedicated interface compatible with INSPIRE and GEO/GEOSS standards and principles. © 2015 IEEE.

Abstract

Triacylglycerols are responsible for chocolate's peculiar melting behavior: the type and position of fatty acids on the glycerol molecule strongly affect the melting range of cocoa butter. For this reason, the characterization of triglyceride composition in cocoa products is particularly important. In this work, triacylglycerols extracted from cocoa liquor samples were analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (TOF) and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) coupled to liquid chromatography. Extracted samples were initially analyzed by direct injection in MS to obtain information on triglyceride molecular weights; relevant MS parameters were optimized, and the possible formation of the adducts [M + Na]+ and [M + NH4]+ was studied. Tandem mass experiments (both with triple quadrupole and TOF/TOF) were performed to study the fragmentation pathways (in particular, the loss of palmitic, stearic and oleic acid) and identify the triacylglycerols in cocoa liquors. Some signals of the spectra obtained with both MS techniques could indicate the presence of diacylglycerols in the cocoa extract, but different experimental evidences demonstrated that they were generated by the in-source fragmentation of triglycerides. A nonaqueous reversed-phase chromatographic separation was also developed and used to support the identification of the analytes; nine triacylglycerols were recognized in the cocoa liquor extracts. The three different batches of Ecuador cocoa liquor did not show significant differences in the triacylglycerol profile.

Abstract

An interdisciplinary approach was employed to monitor the concentration and the effects of butyltin compounds in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis). Tissues from animals exposed to a marine area (Vado Ligure harbour) with a high concentration of tributyltin (TBT) were analysed and compared with control samples. TBT concentrations were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the protein pattern in gill tissues was studied by proteomic analysis. Several proteomic signatures associated with contaminant exposure were observed; spots that were significantly increased in all contaminated samples were identified by mass spectrometry as fragments of beta-tubulin. The degradation of beta-tubulin was then confirmed by western blot analysis with specific anti-beta-tubulin antibody. The effects observed on mussel gills after exposure in the TBT-polluted area are discussed.

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate reconfigurable photonic crystal waveguides created directly by infiltrating high refractive index (n≈2.01) liquids into selected air holes of a two-dimensional hexagonal periodic lattice in silicon. The resulting effective index contrast is large enough that a single row of infiltrated holes enables light propagation at near-infrared wavelengths. We include a detailed comparison between modeling and experimental results of single line defect waveguides and show how our infiltration procedure is reversible and repeatable. We achieve infiltration accuracy down to the single air hole level and demonstrate control on the volume of liquid infused into the holes by simply changing the infiltration velocity. This method is promising for achieving a wide range of targeted optical functionalities on a “blank” photonic crystal membrane that can be reconfigured on demand.

Abstract

We demonstrate a direct, single measurement technique for characterizing the dispersion of a photonic crystal waveguide (PCWG) using a tapered fiber evanescent coupling method. A highly curved fiber taper is used to probe the Fabry-Pérot spectrum of a closed PCWG over a broad k-space range, and from this measurement the dispersive properties of the waveguide can be found. Waveguide propagation losses can also be estimated from measurements of closed waveguides with different lengths. The validity of this method is demonstrated by comparing the results obtained on a ‘W1’ PCWG in chalcogenide glass with numerical simulation.

Abstract

We demonstrate highly efficient evanescent coupling between a highly nonlinear chalcogenide glass two dimensional photonic crystal waveguide and a silica fiber nanowire. We achieve 98% insertion efficiency to the fundamental photonic crystal waveguide mode with a 3dB coupling bandwidth of 12nm, in good agreement with theory. This scheme provides a promising platform to realize low power nanocavity based all-optical switching and logic functions.
