A continuous magnetic separation technique using high gradient magnetic separation and a gas permeable membrane was used for the direct magnetic separation of red blood cells from whole blood.

Magnetic separation tests on kaolin clay were undertaken using an advanced 9 T separator.

A high-gradient magnetic separator for paramagnetic materials has been designed. Bi-2223/Ag high-temperature superconducting tapes was used in constructing the separator because they provide the high magnetic fields required in separating paramagnetic materials. Its magnet system is made up of 12 units with a magnetic field of 3 T. The transport current density is higher than 10 raised to the fourth power A per square cm when operated at 30 degrees K.

A novel water purification system that uses a continuous superconducting magnet in filtering phytoplankton has been designed and constructed. The system incorporates a twin-type superconducting magnet with a helium cooler, a reciprocating main magnetic filter and a rotating magnetic sub-filter. The reciprocating and rotating assemblies allow the magnetic filters to alternate between filtration and the backwashing cycle. The system was able to remove more than 93% of phytoplankton from lake water at flow rates of 400 cubic meter per day.

A superconducting magnetic separator that depends on the braking effect of an axial component of the magnetic force for its operation has been designed. The cylindrical orifice feeder and the splitter are placed in the warm bore of a liquid helium cryostat with the inner diameter of 140 mm. A magnetic flux density of up to 7 T was achieved by the use of NbTi superconducting coils. Results of a computer simulation of the trajectories of paramagnetic particles in a 140 mm diameter warm bore of the superconducting magnet are also discussed.

The paper describes the investigations to work out the design and process parameters of superconducting commercial separators using laboratory units. The design features of the magnet system and the cryostat of the separator of the disk type for wet separation of weakly magnetic ores and non-ore materials are presented. The results of modelling the technological flowsheets for separation of various types of weakly magnetic material using SC magnetic separators are given. The necessity to further improve the magnetic separators in the direction of generation of the magnetic flux higher magnetic forces and densities is well-grounded.

This paper describes the open gradient drum type magnetic separator with superconducting magnet system to develop technologies for dry separation of low magnetic mineral raw material of 4-0 mm (medium size) up to 25-0 mm (coarse size). The separation zone is 1200 mm x 50 mm with the magnet system-wrap angle equal to 90 [degrees], the magnetic field in the separation zone is at the level of 4.5 T, the average value of the magnetic forces is 120 [T.sup.2]/m and the capacity is about 100 t/h. The results of the optimization and numerical calculations of thermophysicai processes in magnetic and cryogenic systems are given. The technological developments of the design of some separator units are presented. The paper also presents the techno-economic indices of the separator application at the ore-mining operations.

The older version of the deflection-mode magnetic dry rotating disk separator has been improved by integrating a belt which forms a moving boundary to outside. The separation process has been considerably simplified, and the product quality has been enhanced with a matching flux density profile. Forces are basically similar to an isodynamic separation mode. A cost estimation based on permanent magnet excitation shows an interesting potential of the improved separator.

Novel HGMS filters have been used to separate dextran-iron labeled human blood and bone marrow cells. Tetrameric antibody complexes for CD8 and CD34 were used for the magnetic labeling. Normalized wire array and process parameters were used to describe the recovery experimental result. Purity was examined using nonmagnetic collision mechanisms. Additional construction details of the filters are given to what has been published previously. A number of experiments with different separation conditions are described which may be of use for difficult biological separation applications.

Previous models of magnetic hydrocyclones were successful in improving the separation of magnetically-susceptible particles from a carrying liquid. Problems occurred, however, with magnetic particles flocculating and accumulating within the hydrocyclone. The liquid flow patterns in the hydrocyclone became distorted, leading to a dilute solid product. A new design of magnetic hydrocyclone has been developed using Nd-Fe-B magnets, which overcomes the problems of magnetic accumulation. The magnets are used to pre-direct the hydrocyclone feed. Compared with a conventional hydrocyclone, this magnetic hydrocyclone is approximately 13% more efficient in the recovery of magnetite, with no change to the liquid content of the product. In an appropriate industrial application, the use of this type of magnetic hydrocyclone could produce significant reductions in the size of installation and processing time.

Frequency tunable millimeter wave (MMW) filters are considered to be fabricated using metallic ferromagnetic thin films. Whereas conventional filters which include insulating ferrite materials utilize the phenomenon of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), our design incorporates the phenomenon of ferromagnetic anti-resonance (FMAR). Our calculations indicate that in comparing the characteristics of the two types of filters the filter utilizing magnetic metal films are superior in terms of insertion loss and integrability with other planar MMW devices.
