Calendula officinalis L., is cultivated and used in Cuba for its medicinal properties. Its use has decreased due to its limited availability and propagation problems. Irrigation with magnetically treated water (MTW) is used for its positive effect on the growth and development of plant species. It is proposed to evaluate the effect of irrigation with MTW on quality parameters and in vitro antioxidant activity of foliar extracts in water and ethanol, for use as phytomedicine. Control plants and plants grown with MTW at an induction range of 100-150 mT were used. The treatment favored quality parameters and did not affect the qualitative presence of metabolites. It stimulated the increase of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, DPPH• radical scavenging activity, reducing power and total antioxidant capacity, with the highest values for the ethanol extract. The physicochemical properties, qualitative phytochemical composition, total phenolic and flavonoid content and free radical scavenging activity of extracts from the leaves of Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour.) Spreng grown with magnetically treated water were evaluated. The extracts from treated plants showed a decrease in pH and an increase in the concentration of total dissolved solids. Furthermore, qualitatively a similar phytochemical composition was observed with respect to its controls and a statistically significant increase in phenolic compounds was evident in the treated extracts, of which the ethanolic compounds had greater antiradical activity. Also, it was verified by thin layer chromatography that all extracts presented compounds with antioxidant activity such as quercetin and rosmarinic acid. These results showed that irrigation with magnetically treated water favored the highest concentration of metabolites related to activity, which increase its antioxidant potential and constitutes the first report of the species grown under these conditions. Two surface soils were selected (one saline and the other non-saline soil); in each soil five treatments of irrigation water were applied, of which the treatment with tap water served as the control, and a magnetic field was created by clamping a static magnet of 1.2 Tesla (12,000 Gauss) outside the irrigation pipe. Each treatment was replicated 4 times. Analyses were performed on the different parameters, and results showed that, relative to the control, there was an increase of 105.7% in the biomass yield only in the stage of plant stress, an increase in the uptake of N and P (79.5% and 141.1%, respectively), and an increase in the uptake of Zn, Cu and B (101.8%, 87.7% and 83.6%, respectively) by the use of the magnetic treatment. As for the total biomass and the total uptake of nutrients, no effect was noticed by the use of the magnetic treatment except for the total uptake of P (an increase of 70.3%). When using high salinity irrigation water with 2,000 mg/L NaCl, the only effect observed with the use of the magnetic treatment was on the uptake of N in the second cut (increase of 45.6%). Soil properties were also examined and results showed that with the use of the magnetic treatment there was a decrease of 13% in soil electrical conductivity and a decrease in soil-available Cu and Fe (15.8% and 45.2%, respectively). Structural changes in the porous media are critical in evaluating the soil pore system and other physical properties of leached soil. In this work, the combination of selected physical parameters such as bulk density and hydraulic conductivity with images of scanning electron microscopic (SEM) was used to study the impact of five levels (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 magnets) of magnetically treated water (MTW) on the structural changes in pore spaces of leached high saline-sodic soil, compared with leached soil with non- magnetically treated water (NMTW) and unleached soil. Results show that leaching saline-sodic soil with MTW leads to a remarkable increase in soil pore network as confirmed by SEM observations and ImageJ software program. The influence of MTW is important in all cases but the changes in pores of leached soil were mainly observed when the magnetic fields of 7 and 9 were used. It has been found that the value of total percentage area of pores in the leached soil was found to be 7.55 and 9.53, respectively, while the total percentage area of pores in both leached soil with NMTW and unleached soil were 0.69 and 0.1 respectively. It can be concluded that MTW can improve the physiochemical properties of soils in two ways: first, it accelerates the solubility of salts and increases calcium ion available on the soil exchange surface which displaced a higher concentration of adsorbed sodium ions. Second, the changes in the microstructure lead to improved soil porosity combined with saturated hydraulic conductivity and bulk density. This study will provide a method for using magnetic water technology to improve soil properties greatly by increasing soil porosity. A field experiment was carried out during the winter season 2017-2018 in one of the agricultural fields of kteban area (15) km East of Basrah city. The study aimed to evaluate the performance of two varieties of wheat crop (Iraq and Babylon-113) under the influence of four levels of magnetization intensity of irrigation water (0, 1500, 2000 and 2500) Gauss. According to a randomized complete block design (RCBD), the field experiment was carried out with three replications. The variety Iraq outperformed, registering the highest average for plant height, tillers number m2, spikes number m-2 number of grains spike-1, grain yield kg. ha-1 reached (92.32 cm, 471.10 tillers. m², 457.90 spikes. m², 55.18 grains spikes-1, and 4558.0 kg. ha-1) respectively, while the variety Babylon-113 surpassed by giving the highest weight of 1000 grains of 38.44 g. The intensity of magnetization of irrigation water affected the intensity (2500) Gauss by giving the highest average of plant height, tillers number m², spikes number. m², number of grains of spike-1, 1000 grains weight, and grain yield were (96.72 cm, 515.8 tillers m², 502.7 spikes m², 54.46 grains spike-1, and 5374.0 kg. ha-1) respectively. While the effect of interaction between varieties and magnetization intensity of irrigation water has a significant impact, as the variety Iraq surpassed at magnetization intensity at 2500 Gauss, recording the highest average of plant height, tillers number m², number of spikes m², number of grains spike-1, and grain yield reached (100.27 cm, 542.7 tillers. m², 527.3 spikes. m², 63.52 grains. spike-1 and 5574.0 kg. ha-1), respectively. The use of irrigation water magnetization technique led to a decrease in irrigation water salinity and an increase in nutrient readiness, thus increasing the yield components and increasing grain yield. The existence of a positive and high significant correlation between the yield of seeds, plant height, tillers number m-2 spikes number m-2 and grains number per spike-1 is reached (0.875 **, 0.942 **, 0.935 ** and 0.717 **), respectively, as shown. The results of the path coefficient analysis are that the two attributes of spikes number of m-2 and grains number of spike-1 are the two most influential characteristics in grain yield of the wheat crop, which can be used as electoral guides in the subsequent breeding programs to increase the grain yield for this crop. The effect of water treated with a static magnetic field (SMF) between 20 and 200 mTon the photosynthetic pigments and carbohydrates of Solanum lycopersicum L. var. HA-574. A completely randomized design was used in GREMAG irrigation technology. One group of plants was irrigated with water treated with SMF (20-80 mT), another group with SMF (100-200 mT), and the control with tap water. Photosynthetic pigments were determined in leaves and carbohydrate content in fruits. Statistical analysis was performed with the Tuckey test. Plants grown with water treated with SMF (100-200 mT) had the highest content of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophylls and carbohydrates. High photosynthetic activity and better adaptation to cultivation conditions were achieved under the benefits of SMF treatment in irrigation water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Even though water treatment can be based on several techniques, one new promising process is applying magnetic treatment to water, which can alleviate salinity stress and improve crop productivity. Using magnetic technology in agriculture is considered non-conventional, economical, and eco-friendly. Moreover, it can improve soil and water properties, which in turn can enhance crop and water productivity whether in normal conditions or under salinity stress. The objective of our study is to quantify the impact of the application of this technique on the growth and productivity of barley under different levels of salinity stress. The experiment included two factors: (i) water treatments (i.e., magnetized water; water after pathing through static magnetic unit, 0.5 inch diameter, 0.35 T and non-magnetized water) and (ii) five levels of salinity stress (320, 2000, 4000, 6000, and 8000 ppm). Results indicated that irrigation barley plants with magnetized saline water reduced the harmful effect of salinity stress where the grain yield (g pot−1) increased by 14.75, 14.32, 16.06, 12.97, and 15.85% under 320, 2000, 4000, 6000, and 8000 ppm salinity levels, respectively compared to the irrigated plants with non-magnetized water of the same salinity level. Similar trends were recorded in all tested parameters. The overall results show that magnetized saline irrigation water, even at high salinity, increases barley growth parameters as well as photosynthetic pigments, resulting in an increase in grain yield compared to irrigation with non-magnetized saline water. Magnetically treated water was used for the determination of the physiomechanical properties (setting time, water/powder ratio (W/P) and compressive strength) of a local plaster of Paris. The results were compared with that of ordinary, and non-treated water to determine the same properties. It was found out that through using magnetically treated water, setting time has decreased by an average of (15.3 %); water powder ratio (W/P) has increased by an average of (2.4 %) and compressive strength has decreased by an average of (22.5 %) compared with the results of ordinary water. Thereforemagnetically treated water may be considered as an accelerator for the plaster of Paris rather than a retarder.

Magnetic seed enhancement has been practicing as a promising tool to improve germination and seedling growth of low vigor seeds stored under suboptimal conditions, but there is still ambiguity regarding the prospects for magnetism in oilseeds. Present study elucidates the potential of magnetic seed stimulation to improve sunflower germination, growth and yield. Germination and emergence tests were performed to optimize the strength of the magnetic field to sunflower seed enhancement. The seeds were directly exposed to magnetic field strengths of 50, 100 and 150 millitesla (mT) for 5, 10 and 15 min (min) and then standard germination tests were performed. Secondly, the emergence potential of untreated seeds was compared with seed exposed to hydropriming, priming with 3% moringa leaf extract (MLE), priming with magnetically treated water (MTW) for 10 min and priming with 3% MLE solution prepared in magnetically treated water (MTW + MLE). Germination, emergence, seedling growth and seed biochemical properties were used to select the best treatment for field evaluation. The results of the study revealed that magnetic seed treatment with 100 mT for 10 min and seed priming with 3% MLE solution in magnetically treated water (MTW + MLE) significantly improved emergence, crop growth rate and sunflower yield.

Pre-sowing magnetic field seed treatment effects on biological characteristics of vegetables and crops have been studied well. However, studies reporting irrigation with magnetically treated water are scanty. Therefore, the effect of irrigation with magnetically treated water on turnip seed germination, seedling growth and enzymatic activities was evaluated. The tap water was treated at 211 mT for 30, 45 and 60 min and used for irrigation of turnip seed and seedlings. Uniform and healthy turnip seed was sown under randomized complete block design (RCBD). The germination, emergence rate index, vigor index I and vigor index II increased up to 28.33%, 11.54%, 57.59% and 32.26%, respectively. The growth parameters such as seedling lengths, fresh & dry weights, chlorophyll content were also enhanced in response of irrigation with magnetically treated water. The seedlings irrigated with magnetically treated water showed 28.92%, 11.36% and 14.76% higher protein content, alpha amylase and protease activities, respectively vs control. Results revealed that irrigation with magnetically treated water has potential to improve turnip germination, seedling growth and enzymatic activities and this study is also extendable to other vegetables and crops for the improvement of germination and growth.

This study investigates the effect of drinking magnetically treated water (MTW) on animal's immune response against bacterial infection to see whether MTW improve the health and the immune response of the body, as MTW producers claimed. 32 female rabbits were housed for 58 days and divided into two groups (treated group and control group) where treated group drank magnetized water with 3500 Guse while control group drank tap water. In the twenty three day, they injected with Salmonella typhi somatic antigen (O-Ag) according to immunization schedule for bacteria. Coulter counter was used for measurement of innate immunity (White blood cell, lymphocyte, monocyte and granulocyte) and Architect system was used for detection of adaptive immune system (immunoglobulin M-IgM titer). No significant difference among treated group and control group was observed in innate immunity before and after vaccination with Sallmonella typhi (O-Ag). However, hemoglobin concentrations show significant decrease (p=0.027) in treated animals after vaccination with salmonella typhi O-Ag. Additionally no immunoglobulin G (IgG) was detected after 7 days from the immunization schedule, while IgM was detected and shows a significant elevation (p=0.030) in control group compared with treated group. For this reason magnetically treated water not only has no effect on hematological parameter but also has adverse effect on immune response to bacterial infection in rabbit.

The study was carried out on twenty-four Friesian calves aged 4-5 months of weights 115- 125 kg. The study aimed to knowing the Effect of magnetically treated water in some blood parameter and the influence of these changes on animal health, quality and quantity of produced meat. In the experiment the calves were distributed into two groups: /8/ ones in each. All these animals were feeding with same feedstuff and the calves in the first group were watered with normal water (As control group), while the calves in the second group were watered with extremely magnetically treated water /1000/ Gauss. The experiment continued for six months and the calves were weighed once a month and blood samples were analyzed from all animals in the experiment. The results showed a significant increase (P< 0.05) in the count of red blood cells, hemoglobin and hematocrit and an increase in the count of white blood cells (P< 0.05) in the second group. The results have shown a decrease in the level of cholesterol and Triglyceride and the level of weight gain of calves in the second group overweighed on average /131/ g daily. Besides, the results refer to improvement in the physiological and healthy conditions of the animals and production of higher amounts of meat as well as producing more healthy meat with lower content in cholesterol and Triglyceride. Cold stratification of Tilia miqueliana M. seeds with different pretreatments of gibberellic acid (GA3) and (or) magnetically treated water (MTW) to break the dormancy and obtain higher and more uniform germination has been studied well. However, there is no complete and uniform theory explaining the effects of MTW or the interaction between MTW and GA3 on seed germination and dormancy breaking. During cold stratification, nutritional contents of soluble sugar, soluble protein, and starch and enzyme activities of α-amylase and protease were evaluated and showed significant changes in treated seeds. The MTW-GA3 treatment produced the biggest changes. For seeds treated with MTW-GA3, soluble sugar content reached the maximum value and protein and starch contents suffered the largest decline after 30 days of cold stratification. The maximum values of α-amylase and protease activities were both observed in seeds treated with MTW-GA3, and they were 216.67% and 67.58% higher, respectively, than corresponding control values. Difficult-to-germinate seeds are a common plant conservation, plantation and biotechnological problem. Oil palm ( Elaeis guineensis ) seed germination takes 6 months to 1 year with ≈40% failure rate. We investigated the affect of various electromagnetic DC field strengths on oil palm germination. Kernels imbibed water more effectively when exposed to a magnetic field. The kernels were divided into three groups. The first group (50) was soaked (imbibed) in distilled water (2 h) with no exposure to applied magnetic fields (blank control). The second group was exposed to magnetic fields with intensities of 2.5 mT, 5.0 mT, 7.0 mT, 9.0 mT and 11.0 mT for 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 h (Dry Treated Kernels, DTK). The same electromagnetic protocol was conducted on a third group but with kernels which were immersed in water (Magnetically-Treated-Water-Kernels, MTWK). 96% germination was achieved by day-30 for the MTWK treatment using 9.0 mT for 4 h: slightly lower results were found for DTK kernels. None of the controls germinated within 30 days. Young oil palm seedlings kept in a shade house (≈110 μmol quanta m −2 s −1 PPFD) watered every day with MTW grew 3 times faster (3.1 mm day −1 ) than controls watered using unmagnetised water. Effects of magneto priming on stimulation of seed germination is widely known. The field which generates magnetized water used for priming can be static magnetic or electromagnetic fields. In this work, we present effect of magneto-priming generated by a rotating magnetic field to improve oil palm (Elaeis guineensis, Jacq.) germination of oil palm kernels. We developed a rotisserie-type magnetic field apparatus (MFA) to stimulate oil palm seed germination. The roller (rotisserie) device ensures an even dosage to an applied magnetic field. Only a 4 h' dosage was required to stimulate germination. The magnetic treatment group started to germinate at 15 days. There was 50% germination after 22 ± 1 d with a maximum germination rate of about 6% d−1 and 100% germination after 37 d. The linearly determined maximum germination rate is about 4.93 ± 0.34% d−1, whereas the logistic model gives a higher estimate of 6.46 ± 0.04% d−1. This study was conducted to determine the effect of treating water by the magnetic field on chemical properties of water, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), electrical conductivity (EC) of water and the lifespan of the effect on water. Magnetic flux densities used as the treatments in this study were 124, 319, 443 and 719 G measured inside a rectangular plastic glass pipe. The mean values of concentration of calcium for magnetically treated water (MTW) for days 1, 2, 3 and 4 after the treatment were 3.197, 3.166, 3.136 and 3.104 mg/L, while those of non-magnetically treated water (NMTW) were 3.130, 3.095, 3.055 and 3.020 mg/L, respectively. The mean values of nitrate from MTW were 43.07, 43.04, 42.71 and 42.56 mg/L, while those of NMTW were 42.73, 42.57, 42.00 and 41.81 mg/L, respectively. The mean value of sulphate from MTW on day 1 was 50.06 mg/L, while that of NMTW was 47.80 mg/L. The mean values of SAR from NMTW were all higher than the values from MTW. The values of EC were also higher for non-magnetically treated water than the values from treated water. The effects of a static low-intensity electromagnetic field (EMF) on higher plants were investigated. Thai basil (Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflora) and waxy corn (Zea mays var. ceratina) were chosen as samples for the experiments. There were 2 methods of electromagnetic exposure, indirect exposure (applying magnetically treated water to plants) and direct exposure (plants are grown under the electromagnetic field). For the indirect exposure experiment, magnetically treated water (0.34-4.54 mT, 24 h) was applied to Thai basil seeds daily for 1 week and the experiment was repeated once. No significant difference in the heights was found between the control groups and the treated groups whether deionized or tap water was used. For the direct exposure experiment (0.28-3.83 mT), waxy corn seeds were grown between a pair of electromagnets. Two controls were grown in the absence of an extra magnetic field; 1 control group (no electromagnets (EM)) was grown at room temperature while the other control group (EM-0) was grown between a pair of electromagnets with a similar temperature to the other magnetically treated groups. The experiment was completed in 4 days and was repeated once. The results indicated that there is no height difference between the control (EM-0) and the groups grown between electromagnets; however, the controls (no EM), which were grown at room temperature were shorter compared to those grown between electromagnets. This study was carried out to determine whether magnetic treatment of the irrigation water may actually enhance vegetative growth and yield of tomato. Three magnetic flux densities of 124, 319 and 719 G (treatments T1, T2 and T3) were used to treat the water and a control experiment (Tc) which was irrigated with non-magnetically treated water was also set up. The magnetic field was produced by an electromagnet that had a variable voltage unit varying the voltage from 4 to 12 V. The tomato were planted in buckets, kept in a transparent garden shed for 130 days and irrigated with magnetically treated water and non-magnetically treated water. A completely randomized design experimental layout was used in this study and each of the three treatments was replicated seven times. The results indicated that tomato crop irrigated with magnetically treated water grew faster than that of the non-magnetically treated water and the stem diameters were bigger than those of control. The heights of tomato plants (T1, T2 T3 and Tc) after 47 days were 560.0, 556.4, 588.6 and 469.3 mm respectively. The total yield after 130 days of survey for T1, T2 T3 and Tc were 892.1, 1075.8, 1045.7 and 637.7 g respectively. The percentage increment in yield from the plants treated with magnetically treated water varied from 39.9 to 68.7% compared to the yield from untreated water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water molecules can be affected by magnetic fields (MF) due to their bipolar characteristics. In the present study maize plants, from sowing to the end period of generative stage, were irrigated with magnetically treated water (MTW).Tap water was treated with MF by passing through a locally designed alternative magnetic field generating apparatus (110 mT). Irrigation with MTW increased the ear length and fresh weight, 100-grain fresh and dry weights, and water productivity (119.5%, 119.1%, 114.2%, 116.6% and 122.3%, respectively), compared with the control groups. Levels of photosynthetic pigments i.e. chlorophyll a and b, and the contents of anthocyanin and flavonoids of the leaves were increased compared to those of non-treated ones. Increase of the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in leaves of the treated plants efficiently scavenged active oxygen species and resulted in the maintenance of photosynthetic membranes and reduction of malondealdehyde. Total ferritin, sugar, iron and calcium contents of kernels of MTW-irrigated plants were respectively 122.9%, 167.4%, 235% and 185% of the control ones. From the results presented here it can be concluded that the influence of MF on living plant cells, at least in part, is mediated by water. Antioxidant effects of tomatoes ( Solanum lycopersicum L.) have been studied and an association between dietary intake of tomatoes and lowered risk of cancer, neurodegenerative, and cardiovascular diseases has been suggested. Here we used magnetically treated water (MTW; 0.03-0.15 T), which promotes better germination and productivity in tomatoes, and we investigated the effects of aqueous and ethanolic (10-400 μg/ml) extracts of S. lycopersicum as potential antioxidant against 10 μM Fe(II)-induced thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) in liver and brain homogenates from rats. The ethanolic extracts from magnetically treated plants were more effective than aqueous extracts in preventing TBARS formation in brain and liver. The protective effects of ethanolic extract can be associated with antioxidants (polyphenols and flavonoids), lycopene and other lipophilic components found in the extract. In effect, magnetically treated plants had higher content of polyphenolic and flavonoid compounds than nontreated plants and they can be a better source of antioxidants than nontreated plants. Consequently, MTW can be used to produce functional foods with high contents of antioxidant components and may have better beneficial health effects than traditionally produced foods. The impact of a variable magnetic field, magnetically treated water and a combination of both these factors on the germination of seeds and the final mass at the initial stage of growth sunflower plants was presented. Investigations were carried out in pots filled with sand, tin an air-conditioned plant house with no access to daylight using fluorescent light as illumination.Astatistical significance positive impact was achieved for the samples subjected to the interaction of both stimulating factors simultaneously, the magnetic field and the impact of treated water several times on the speed of seed germination and final plant mass. The research was carried out in the Mountain Development Center, placed 470 meters over sea level, the main objective of the research was to know the influence of magnetically treated water in the germination and the morph productive development of lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. Black S-S). Seeds from the Guantanamo's seedbed were used on it. A mono factorial at random system was used, in which irrigation was the main factor (Control: irrigation with no treated water, irrigation with magnetically treated water). Irrigation was used with hose and the rule was applied according to the technical instructions. Sowing was carried out on a substratum made by carbonated brown soil and humus, 3:1 measure. Preparations of soil and agro technique activities were carried out according to technical instructions. Data were analyzed through statistical software STATGRAPHIC plus 5.1. Magnetic seed enhancement has been practicing as a promising tool to improve germination and seedling growth of low vigor seeds stored under suboptimal conditions, but there is still ambiguity regarding the prospects for magnetism in oilseeds. Present study elucidates the potential of magnetic seed stimulation to improve sunflower germination, growth and yield. Germination and emergence tests were performed to optimize the strength of the magnetic field to sunflower seed enhancement. The seeds were directly exposed to magnetic field strengths of 50, 100 and 150 millitesla (mT) for 5, 10 and 15 min (min) and then standard germination tests were performed. Secondly, the emergence potential of untreated seeds was compared with seed exposed to hydropriming, priming with 3% moringa leaf extract (MLE), priming with magnetically treated water (MTW) for 10 min and priming with 3% MLE solution prepared in magnetically treated water (MTW + MLE). Germination, emergence, seedling growth and seed biochemical properties were used to select the best treatment for field evaluation. The results of the study revealed that magnetic seed treatment with 100 mT for 10 min and seed priming with 3% MLE solution in magnetically treated water (MTW + MLE) significantly improved emergence, crop growth rate and sunflower yield.
