A complete magneto-optical characterization of Pt capped Ag-Co-Ag sputtered trilayers with varying Co thickness is presented. Polar Kerr rotation and elfipticity exhibit a gradual increase in signal as the Co layer gets thicker, with a sharp feature around 3.75 eV due to the bulk Ag plasmon resonance. The transverse Kerr signal of such trilayers is strongly affected by the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) resonance excitation when measured in the Kretschmann configuration, with a maximum transverse Kerr effect for around 2 nm Co thickness which corresponds to the optimum SPP excitation. This behavior is in contrast with the monotonous increase in transverse Kerr signal with Co thickness measured when the SPP is not excited. These results are in qualitative agreement with simulations using the transfer matrix formalism, the discrepancies mainly being due to the deviation from 2-D growth of the system and possible Ag and Co oxidation effects. Material selective sensitivity of a magneto-optical polar Kerr effect to magnetizations of films from different materials in a multilayer system is presented. The method is supported by rigorous modeling of magneto-optic response from the multilayer system and by experimental demonstration on the periodic cobalt-permalloy multilayers [[[Ni.sub.80][Fe.sub.20](2 nm)/Au(2 nm)/Co(0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 nm)/Au(2 nm)].sub.10]. The so-called diffracted magneto-optical (MO) effects, in which the MO responses of diffracted beams are measured in the off-specular geometry, have been utilized to change the amplitude and the sign of MO signals. An enhancement of MO effect of the first-order diffraction was found. In this paper, the rigorous coupled-wave analysis implemented as Airy-like internal reflection series was developed to simulate the diffracted longitudinal MO Kerr effect. We demonstrate that the enhancement of the MO effect is controllable for a certain diffraction order by adjusting the geometrical parameters of Ni gratings. Furthermore, it is believed that the absolute magnitude and the MO enhancement can be more effectively tuned by designing the grating profile and carefully selecting the gyrotropic materials. Several studies are conducted to explain the magneto-optical response exhibited by the type-II tensily strained GaAs quantum dots present in the GaSb matrix. The diamagnetic coefficient of the system is shown to increase and then saturate with an increase in the energy of the system.

A method is described for inducing and controlling van der Waals torques between two parallel slabs by using a constant magnetic field. The studies have shown that there is not torque in the absence of magnetic field, but the optical anisotropy of InSb has increased and the torque has become different from zero, which has increased with the presence of magnetic filed.

Byline: A.J. Varkey A chemical method has been developed for depositing tin disulphide (SnS,) thin films onto glass substrates at room temperature. The films were found to have n type conductivity with optical band gap of about 2.3 eV. Some of the optical and electrical properties of these films were also investigated.

The Muller matrix approach is employed to explain the various magneto-optical characteristics exhibited by the magnetophotonic crystals based on the cholesteric liquid crystals. The oscillation behavior of the crystals is shown to be highly polarization-dependent.

The loops with active non-Foster loads, in which resistance, capacitance and inductance are negative, are arranged in a periodic lattice in order to form an effective medium with either negative-Re [mu] or [mu]-near-zero magnetic properties over a broad range of frequencies. The stability and effective magnetic properties are examined along with the tradeoffs between stability, bandwidth and the lower bounds of the permeability.

The magnetoplasmonic (MP) features and sensing capabilities of Au/Fe/Au trilayer structures are analyzed as transducers of the magneto-optic surface plasmon resonance (MOSPR) biosensor. A twofold increase is confirmed in the MOSPR sensitivity with respect to the intensity-interrogated SPR biosensor in bulk refractive-index changes, keeping a similar chemical resistance and stability, unprecedented in other MP transducers, and biofunctional protocols.

The electromagnetic characteristics of an optical configuration consisting of two dielectric regions of the same n>1 with a thin flat gap of air/vacuum of width d between them are examined. The results have shown many possible applications of the optical circuit elements such as variable ratio power splitter, phase to amplitude field modulator, and optical mode selector.

The article discusses a newly developed Aharonov-Bohm (AB) system, which is completely based on the various electron-hole bilayer nanotubes made of rolled-up type-II band aligned quantum wells. These nanotubes are shown to be widely used for a large number of magneto-optical switching devices and similar applications.

An exact solution is described for the scatterings of electromagnetic wave by the homogeneous dielectric slab moving in an arbitrary direction. The studies have shown that the polarizations of the electromagnetic wave are manipulated through reflections by the moving dielectric materials.

The enhancement of magneto-optical (MO) effects in nanocomposite Au-Co thin films is examined. The samples are obtained by cosputter deposition varying the relation Au:Co composition and a strong enhancement of the transverse MO activity is observed when surface plasmons are excited in the Kretscheman configuration.

Several studies are conducted to explain the different effect s of the static magnetic fields on the light scattering taking place in the red chromatophore of goldfish scale. The magnetic fields are shown to lead to quenching of the light scattering process.

Several studies are conducted to explain the localized surface plasmon resonance enhanced magneto-optical activities of the core-shell Fe-Ag nanoparticles. The exploitation of these properties is shown to be extremely beneficial in enhancing the sensitivity of these nanoparticles.

Several studies are conducted to explain the giant magneto-optical Faraday effect observed in the different GaP epilayers containing the MnP magnetic nanoclusters. The effect is shown to be completely dependent on the magnetization of the sample.

Several studies are conducted to explain the magnetic properties of the various polycrystalline magnetic garnets that are used for voltage driven type magneto-optic spatial light phase modulators. The magnitude and the linearity of the stress is shown to be completely dependent on the static bias field and magnetostriction constant.

The article explains the fabrication, characteristics and the properties of the various one-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals. These crystals are shown to be widely used for enhancing the magneto-optic properties of the magneto-optic spatial light phase modulator.

The article explains the fabrication and the magneto-optical effects of the nanosandwich array with plasmonic structure of Au/[Co/Pt]n/Au. The Faraday rotation angle for the sandwich structure of the compounds is shown to keep enhancing significantly.

The magneto-optical imaging technique is employed to explain the mechanisms involved in the vortices motion occurring in the Ba([Fe.sub.1.8][Co.sub.0.2])[As.sub.2] single crystals. The pinning strength of the motion is shown to be inversely related to the temperature.

A new magneto-optical imaging technique is employed to determine the coercivity and the properties of the various GdFe-spin-valve structures. The coercivity of the structures is shown to significantly reduce with the formation of patterns of the nucleation centers.

Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) spectroscopy is applied to probe the aging of Ni/rubrene bilayers under ambient atmosphere. The Ni top layer has displayed capping properties, reducing the rate of oxidation of the organic underlayer in comparison with single organic layers.

Optical magnetic nanostructures, based on anodic aluminum oxide membranes and magnetic fluids, are prepared and examined by using transmission and magneto-optical properties. [Co/Ni] multilayer films are grown in various conditions to analyze the effect of growth parameters on the anisotropy of the films in order to optimize the perpendicular uniaxial anisotropy. The magnitude of the uniaxial anisotropy has shown that the overall easy direction of magnetization is oriented either in plane or out of plane depending on the amplitude of the demagnetization field.

The dependencies of the growth mode and magnetic properties of Fe thin films grown on vicinal Si(111) substrates via rf magnetron sputtering are described. Magneto-optical Kerr effect hysteresis loops have showed an easy-axis coercivity that is smaller for the film deposited with stray field applied along the steps.

The magneto-optical Kerr effect of an iron-vanadium nanocluster-assembled thin film measured as a function of hydrogen content is reported. The observed Kerr effect is attributed to the modification of the electronic properties of the nonmagnetic vanadium nanoclusters by hydrogen.

The physical origin of magneto-optical effect is shown to be the differential interference of the circular polarization eigenmodes of scattered soft x-rays at the grazing incidence. Numerical calculations using an iterative method of transmission, reflection and propagation matrices have helped in verifying the underlying mechanism along with finding the necessary specific conditions of photon energy and incidence angle where the phenomenon has occurred.

A novel fiber-based, magneto-optic switch based on Sagnac interferometer is described. The performance is modeled by using an analytical model that has included reflections at magnetic-optic interfaces.

The magneto-optical Kerr effects in magnetic multilayered structures containing double-negative metamaterials are examined by using 4*4 transfer-matrix method. The studies have shown that large magneto-optical Kerr effects are obtained at very thin magnetic film by using the double-negative metamaterials.

Room temperature magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) is used for studying the affect of Au capping layers on the magnetic properties of thin Fe films grown on Si(111). The analysis from angular resolved ultraviolet spectroscopy and ion scattering spectroscopy has shown that the complex anisotropy behavior is attributed partly to Au/Fe interfacial interdiffusion.

The ultrafast electron dynamics subsequent to a hundred femtosecond photoexcitation is monitored in a few nanometers thick Au/Co/Au film by using time-resolved transient spectroscopy. The analysis has provided an important data on the electronic processes underlying the spin dynamics in a sample typically designed for magneto-optical applications.

The effect of the Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) on the Fock-Darwin energy spectrum in the parabolically confined quantum dots is examined in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The results have shown that the Rashba SOI has caused the band mixing and band shifting in the quantum dots and the Fock-Darwin energy spectrum has become richer but complex, which is due to an intricate interplay between the SOI and the Zeeman energy.

Magneto-optic sampling and terahertz pulse generation are used for establishing the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) on-chip. Magnetic excitations in Fe microstructures are analyzed by time-resolved Kerr spectroscopy and an ultrafast response time to the subterahertz electromagnetic field pulse is indicated.
