3. All We Are Is Dust In The WIM: Constraints on Dust Properties in the Milky Way's Warm Ionized Medium

Abstract

We present a comparison of the presence and properties of dust in two distinct phases of the Milky Way's interstellar medium: the warm neutral medium (WNM) and the warm ionized medium (WIM). Using distant pulsars at high Galactic latitudes and vertical distance ($|b| > 40\deg$, $D \sin|b| > 2 \mathrm{\,\, kpc}$) as probes, we measure their dispersion measures and the neutral hydrogen component of the warm neutral medium ($\text{WNM}_\text{HI}$) using HI column density. Together with dust intensity along these same sightlines, we separate the respective dust contributions of each ISM phase in order to determine whether the ionized component contributes to the dust signal. We measure the temperature ($T$), spectral index ($\beta$), and dust opacity ($\tau/N_{H}$) in both phases. We find $T~{\text{(WNM}_\text{HI})}=20^{+3}_{-2}$~K, $\beta~{\text{(WNM}_\text{HI})} = 1.5\pm{0.4}$, and $\tau_{\text{353}}/N_{H}~{\text{(WNM}_\text{HI})}=(1.0\pm0.1)\times 10^{-26}$~cm$^2$. Assuming that the temperature and spectral index are the same in both the WNM$_\text{HI}$ and WIM, and given our simple model that widely separated lines-of-sight can be fit together, we find evidence that there is a dust signal associated with the ionized gas and $\tau_{\text{353}}/N_{H}~\text{(WIM)}=(0.3\pm0.3)\times 10^{-26}$, which is about three times smaller than $\tau_{\text{353}}/N_{H}~{\text{(WNM}_\text{HI})}$. We are 80% confident that $\tau_{\text{353}}/N_{H}~\text{(WIM)}$ is at least two times smaller than $\tau_{\text{353}}/N_{H}~{\text{(WNM}_\text{HI})}$., Comment: 11 pages, 4 tables, 4 figures, accepted to the Astrophysical Journal

14. Improving Traffic Efficiency With Lane Guidance Based on Desired Speeds

Abstract

Drivers initiate a discretionary lane change when they perceive an anticipated improvement in their own driving condition from moving to another lane. However, such a lane change can slow down other vehicles on the target lane, and even worse initiate a disturbance. In this work, we argue that the blocking effect triggered by individual lane changes results from the heterogeneity in the desired speeds of vehicles, and thus using desired speed information of vehicles when regulating lane-changing decisions can improve traffic efficiency. In doing so, our work also exemplifies the usefulness of incorporating user preferences into control decisions. The proposed lane guidance system uses an optimization-based approach to update the target range of desired speeds on each lane in real time, and accordingly recommends individual lane changes. The control system coordinates the lane-changing decisions at the link level, for which the road stretch is subdivided into multiple sections that are controlled independently. We evaluate the performance of the lane guidance system in micro-simulation, for different network demands and desired speed distributions. The results highlight that the proposed approach utilizing the desired speed preferences of drivers results in positive efficiency gains for most traffic compositions in free flow. Moreover, the highest gains are expected in medium to high demand, and when the traffic composition includes a higher proportion of vehicles desiring higher speeds. Abstract

This is the report of neutrino and astroparticle physics working group at WHEPP-8. We present the discussions carried out during the workshop on selected topics in the above fields and also indicate progress made subsequently. The neutrino physics subgroup studied the possibilites of constraining neutrino masses, mixing and CPT violation in lepton sector from future experiments. Neutrino mass models in the context of abelian horizontal symmetries, warped extra dimensions and in presence of triplet Higgs were studied. Effect of threshold corrections on radiative magnification of mixing angles was investigated. The astroparticle physics subgroup focused on how various particle physics inputs affect the CMBR fluctuation spectrum, and on brane cosmology. 24. Trends of Nutritional Anaemia Among Adolescents of Kukna Tribal Community of Gujarat, India

Abstract

Background: Iron-deficiency anaemia is most common form of anaemia affecting adolescents in rural and urban setting in India. This condition has worsening effects on overall growth and cognitive development of children and adolescents. The paper evaluates sex and age-wise prevalence of anaemia in adolescents of Kukna tribe of Valsad, Gujarat. Methodology: Cross-sectional study on 296 Kukna adolescents(168 females and 128 males)aged 14-18 years was conducted. Dietary preference along with height, weight and haemoglobin status were taken. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS18.0. Result: Overall prevalence was estimated as 61.5%. Sex-wise prevalence was found to be 45.3%(females) and 16.2%(males). Frequency of anaemia was observed to be higher in vegetarians(n=112) than mix-diet individuals(n=68). Frequency of anaemia was reported to be greater in normal body mass index(BMI) females(n=55) and underweight males(n=37) with respect to females and males lying in other BMI categories. Prevalence rates of current study were greater than national prevalence of anaemia(53%) and greater proportion of females were found to be anaemic. Conclusion: There is a dire need for more micro-level and community-based studies for assessment of anaemia which will enhance the understanding about the vulnerable groups in the country.

Abstract

Introduction: Maternal infections can affect the placenta, which acts as a fetomaternal barrier. This study aimed to determine the spectrum of morphologic alterations in the placentas of pregnancies complicated by SARS-CoV-2 infection and the impact on fetal or neonatal outcomes. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective case-control study. One hundred SARS-CoV-2 positive pregnant women and an equal number of SARS CoV-2 negative pregnant women in their third trimester who delivered at our tertiary care center between December 2020 and November 2021 were enrolled in the study. This study was conducted at the end of the first wave and during the second COVID-19 wave. Histopathological examination of the placentas was done using Amsterdam consensus criteria. We observed for evidence of maternal vascular malperfusion [MVM], fetal vascular malperfusion, and inflammation in the placenta. Results: The clinical findings were compared between the cases and controls. Evidence of MVM was seen in comparable numbers between the cases and controls, but as it involved less than 30% of the placental disc, it was considered an insignificant finding. Deciduitis was seen in equal proportions in both groups. The comparison between the asymptomatic and symptomatic groups failed to show any difference in placental pathology between both groups. There was no adverse fetal outcome seen in the pregnancies complicated by SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusion: Placental injury at the microscopic level was observed but was neither significant nor specific to the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Abstract

Respiratory tract infections are of serious concern to the poultry industry. The present study was aimed to delineate the extent of respiratory avian mycoplasmosis associated bacterial and viral concurrent infections in the poultry flocks. A total of 146 poultry flocks of Haryana and Rajasthan, India, suspected for chronic respiratory disease (CRD) were screened for avian mycoplasmas, Newcastle disease virus (NDV), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), and avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. A total of 49.31% (72/146) flocks were found positive for Mycoplasma infection. Of the Mycoplasma-positive flocks, 80.55% (58/72) represented pathogenic avian mycoplasmas (MG and/or MS), while 19.44% (14/72) flocks were positive for commensal avian mycoplasmas (other than MG and MS). A correlation was deduced between avian mycoplasmosis and bacterial and/or viral co-infections. The results revealed that 17.24% (10/58) flocks had only avian mycoplasmosis infection. However, in the remaining flocks, the avian mycoplasmosis was associated either with APEC infection [17.24% (10/58)], IBV infection [43.10% (25/58)], or both APEC and IBV infections [22.41% (13/58)], respectively. Further epidemiological studies on respiratory avian mycoplasmosis associated concurrent infections with other pathogens are recommended to assess circulating strains, risk factors, and economic losses. Platelets have also been shown to take up and store many plasma proteins into granules. This makes the platelet a potential novel source of biomarkers for many disease states. Approaches to sample preparation for proteomic studies for biomarkers search vary. Compared with traditional two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis systems, nonelectrophoretic proteomics methods that employ offline protein fractionation methods such as the differential detergent fractionation method have clear advantages. Here we report a proteomic survey of the canine platelet proteome using differential detergent fractionation coupled with mass spectrometry and functional modeling of the canine platelet proteins identified. A total of 5,974 unique proteins were identified from platelets, of which only 298 (5%) had previous experimental evidence of in vivo expression. The use of offline prefractionation of canine proteins by differential detergent fractionation resulted in greater proteome coverage as compared with previous reports. This initial study contributes to a broader understanding of canine platelet biology and aids functional research, identification of potential treatment targets and biomarkers, and sets a new standard for the resting platelet proteome. Abstract

A rapid decline in self-renewability, viability and function, of isolated stem cells are major hurdles in developing cell based therapies. There has been an increasing interest towards identifying a support material for maintaining stem cell features of the isolated cells. Pioneering observations of the present paper, demonstrate functionally diverse potential of Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLNs) in deciding the fate & behavior of mouse mesenchymal stem cell. The evidences are provided to show the dual nature of the SLNs for being a scaffold for the stem cell attachment, to retain stemness, and as reagent for inducing stem cell differentiation. Scanning electron microscopic examinations together with expression analysis were used to conform to such observations. Results of the study thus suggest that Solid lipid nanoparticles can be used as a good support material when functionalized to achieve adhesive properties and as a molecular paradigm for studying the adipocytic differentiation. We envisage a new role of SLNs towards regulating stem cell character by orchestrating the structural alignment during preparation of Solid lipid nanoparticles.
