The present study investigated the impact of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) on growth performance, carcass traits, liver and kidney functions, immunity and antioxidant indicators, digestive enzymes, and cecum bacteriology of growing rabbits. One hundred 5-week-old New Zealand White (NZW) male rabbits were randomly divided into 5 equal groups and fed for 8 weeks on the basal diet only or on the basal diet supplemented with different levels of Ag-NPs (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, or 1.00 mg/kg diet). Animals in each group were randomly distributed in 10 cages (replicates), with two rabbits each. Different dietary concentrations of Ag-NPs significantly increased live body weight (LBW) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Also, body weight gain (BWG) increased dramatically during all experimental periods except 11–13 weeks of age. Levels of 0.25 and 1 mg of Ag-NPs/kg diet showed the highest increase in LBW, BWG, and FCR. All studied carcass traits, except liver %, were not affected by Ag-NPs levels. Rabbits fed diet supplemented with 1 mg Ag-NPs had the highest liver %. Serum total protein, albumin, and globulin levels were increased (P<0.05) in groups treated with 0.25 and 0.75 mg Ag-NPs. In contrast, serum values of aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT), urea and creatinine were significantly reduced with the supplementation of Ag-NPs up to 0.75 mg/kg diet. The immunoglobulins M, G, and A (IgM, IgG, and IgA), complement 3 (C3) and lysozyme activity were improved with the inclusion of nano-silver in the rabbit feeds, particularly at the level of 0.25 mg Ag-NPs/kg feed. The inclusion of Ag-NPs in rabbit diets at different concentrations increased the total antioxidant capacity and the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. Growing rabbits fed on diets supplemented with Ag-NPs had higher levels of digestive enzymes than the control group. The addition of Ag-NPs reduced the load of E. coli, Salmonella spp. and coliform in the rabbit cecum. Overall, the inclusion of 0.25–1 mg Ag-NPs/kg to NZW rabbit diets has shown beneficial effects on health and performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study aimed to study the effects of administration with a multistrain probiotic formulation (MPF) initiated from the prepartum stage on lactation performance, digestibility, rectal microbiota, and blood metabolites of postpartum dairy cows. A total of 30 multiparous crossbred (Holstein Friesian × Balady) dairy cows were randomized into three groups: control (no MPF supplementation), MPF1 (0.5 g MPF/cow/d), and MPF2 (1 g MPF/cow/d). The administration of MPF started 28 days before calving and continued for 84 days after. The results revealed that cows in the MPFI and MPF2 groups had higher milk production, 3.5% FCM, and ECM than those in the control group. The MPF‐supplemented cows had significantly greater milk energy output, DMI, and yields of solids‐not‐fat, lactose, total solids, ash, fat, and protein. The MPF supplementation significantly enhanced feed conversion and significantly interacted with milk solids‐not‐fat, lactose, total solids, and protein. Hematological indicators did not significantly alter between the MPF and control groups. However, cows receiving MPF supplements had higher levels of Hct. Serum biochemical measurements showed lower serum concentrations of LDL, total cholesterol, and VLDL in MPF‐fed cows than in the control group. The digestibility of organic and dry matter tended to be higher in MPF‐supplemented cows. The populations of lactobacillus, bacillus, and total bacterial count increased due to MPF administration, while the count of Clostridium, Salmonella, E. coli, and coliforms decreased in MPF‐fed cows. In summary, administering MPF during late gestation and early lactation period improved milk production, fecal microbial composition, and overall health of dairy cows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work was carried out to study the ability of five probiotics on the in vitro degradation of Aflatoxins B1 (AFB1). The best results of in vitro were tested on the detoxification of AFB1 in rabbits. A total of 40 growing New Zealand White (NZW) male rabbits were assigned to five experimental groups. Animals were fed the following diets: basal diet (control), basal diet contaminated with 300 ppb AFB1, basal diet contaminated with 300 ppb AFB1. + probiotic 3 (0.5 g/kg diet), basal diet contaminated with 300 ppb AFB1 + ajowan (0.5 g/kg diet), and basal diet contaminated with 300 ppb AFB1 + probiotic 3 (0.5 g/kg diet) + ajowan (0.5 g/kg diet). Live body weight significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in rabbits fed AFB1 contaminated diet compared to the control rabbits. All additives improved (P < 0.05) the live body weight. The best improvement occurred with probiotics + ajowan. The addition of probiotics increased (P < 0.05) daily body weight gain in all weeks except the first week. Adding ajowan or ajowan + probiotic led to a significant (P < 0.05) increase in live body weight gain and feed intake compared to rabbits fed AFB1 alone. The digestion coefficients of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE), nitrogen-free extract (NFE), and digestible crude protein (DCP) significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in rabbits fed AFB1 contaminated diet. All additives improved (P < 0.05) the digestibility coefficients of DM, OM, EE, CF, NFE, and total digested nutrients (TDN)%. The best improvement occurred with probiotics + ajowan. Concentrations of serum total protein, albumin and globulin significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in rabbits fed AFB1 contaminated diet compared with the control rabbits. In conclusion, the addition of probiotic 3 (AVI-5-BAC) + ajowan could be recommended to eliminate the toxicity of AFB1 and improve growth performance criteria in rabbits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bioactive peptides (BPs) are specific protein fragments formed by amino acids joined by covalent bonds known as amide or peptide bonds that exert various beneficial effects on human bodies and ultimately influence health, reckoning on their structural properties and aminoalkanoic acid composition and sequences. These peptides can be obtained from plants, animals, microorganisms, and fermented food and may be consumed as nutraceuticals. Most BPs display one or more specific biofunctional features. BPs are the new generation of biologically active regulators; they can prevent oxidation and microbial decomposition in foods as well as improve the treatment of various diseases and disorders, thus increasing the quality of life. Also, the animal food proteins are currently considered as the crucial source of a variety of bioactive peptides and have gained special attention because they may probably influence many physiological responses along with maintenance of good health condition. This review focused on bioactive peptides as useful food preservatives and on reviewing their potential pharmaceutical role, due to their antioxidant and/or antimicrobial effects.
