1. A Multi-Objective Planning and Scheduling Framework for Community Energy Storage Systems in Low Voltage Distribution Networks

Abstract

This paper presents a methodology for optimizing the planning and scheduling aspects of a community energy storage (CES) system in the presence of solar photovoltaic (SPV) power in low voltage (LV) distribution networks. To this end, we develop a multi-objective optimization framework that minimizes the real power loss, the energy trading cost of LV customers and the CES provider with the grid, and the investment cost for the CES. Distribution network limits including the voltage constraint are also taken into account by combining the optimization problem with a linearized power flow model. Simulations for the proposed optimization framework with real power consumption and SPV generation data of the customers, highlight both real power loss and energy trading cost with the grid are reduced compared with the case without a CES by nearly 29% and 16%, respectively. 9. DER Capacity Assessment of Active Distribution Systems Using Dynamic Operating Envelopes

Abstract

The increasing deployment of distributed energy resources (DER) within electricity distribution systems can push them outside their safe operational limits. This urges the distribution system operators (DSO) to perform a DER capacity assessment that utilises the network’s full potential to accommodate more DER while ensuring the network’s safety. However, this is a challenging task as the DER units are mostly consumer-owned and therefore the DSO does not have control over them. To overcome this challenge, this paper first develops dynamic operating envelopes (DOEs). A DOE is a convex set defining acceptable real and reactive powers exchange with the grid at a consumer connection point without violating any network constraints. We propose a novel methodology to calculate a DOE by applying the right-hand side decomposition technique through which we allocate the network’s capacity to mutually independent consumers. We then build a hierarchical DER capacity assessment within DOEs that considers the uncertainty of solar power and demand when making investment decisions. In the proposed framework, the consumers are then free to make their decisions as long as they comply with their DOEs.

Abstract

The transition from centralised, fossil fuel-powered generating units to distributed energy resources (DER) represents a significant step forward, offering numerous benefits. However, this shift also presents operational challenges for distribution network service providers (DNSPs) and the electricity markets. In this paper, we introduce our innovative solution for allocating network capacity in the form of operating envelopes, shaped to enhance customer participation in energy and reserve markets. Our approach also provides DNSPs with network support flexibility of DER which can be leveraged to either increase network throughput for market services or postpone network augmentation. This study outlines our initial findings from Project Converge 1 1 https://arena.gov.au/projects/project-converge-act-distributed-energy-resources-demonstration-pilot/. —a comprehensive real-world trial involving 1000 active customers (the largest participant cohort in Australia) located in the Australian Capital Territory. Within, we discuss the challenges we have encountered, the opportunities that have arisen, potential avenues for future expansion, and the invaluable insights gained during the pre-trial phase of the project. • Proposing shaped operating envelopes – a novel extension of dynamic operating envelopes to allocate network capacity amongst aggregators. • Enabling DER to participate in energy, FCAS and network support market while empowering DNSPs to postpone network augmentation. • Real-world implementation of our approach in a live trial in Australia with more that active 1000 customers.
