Purpose: To assess the value of different image reconstruction algorithms for assessment of the left ventricular function using retrospectively ECG-gated multislice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) of the heart.Material and Methods: MSCT and cine magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the heart were performed in 15 patients. For MSCT, standard and multisegmental image reconstruction with improved temporal resolution were used. Standardized multiplanar reformats in the short axis and long axis views were reconstructed from MSCT data. End-systolic (ESV) and end-diastolic volume (EDV), stroke volume (SV), ejection fraction (EF) and myocardial mass (MM) were calculated. Left ventricular wall motion was assessed qualitatively.Results: MSCT was in acceptable agreement with MR imaging for quantification of the ventricular function. According to the Bland-Altman approach the mean differences for the left ventricular volumes (ESV, EDV, SV) ranged from -9.6 ml to 3.1 ml with standard image reconstruction and from -0.6 ml to 1.9 ml utilizing multisegmental image reconstruction with limits of agreement ranging from -26.6 ml to 12.5 ml and -15.6 ml to 15.0 ml, respectively. Applying the multisegmental image reconstruction algorithm, a significantly improved agreement with the MR data was found for EDV, SV and EF. For wall motion analysis, standard image reconstruction showed a significant difference to MR imaging with a correspondence in 83.75% of the 240 assessed segments, while multisegmental image reconstruction agreed with MR imaging in 92.5% of the segments.Conclusion: Multisegmental image reconstruction improves the quantitative assessment of left ventricular function when compared to standard image reconstruction. Purpose: To evaluate the MR signal intensity characteristics in Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease on fat-suppressed (STIR) images and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted spin-echo images, and to develop criteria for the administration of contrast material. Material and Methods: Twenty children with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease underwent conventional radiography and MR imaging of the hip utilizing fat-suppressed (STIR) sequences and T1-weighted spin-echo sequences before and after i.v. contrast administration. The signal intensity characteristics of the femoral head and the proximal femoral metaphysis were assessed retrospectively by two pediatric radiologists. Results: Evaluation of the MR images revealed six different signal patterns within the femoral head: 1) isointense signal on all images; 2) complete signal void on all images; 3) hyperintense signal on STIR images with; or 4) without contrast enhancement on T1-weighted spin-echo images; 5) isointense signal on STIR images with; or 6) without contrast enhancement on T1-weighted images. Within the metaphysis three different signal patterns were differentiated. Conclusion: Combination of fat-suppressed (STIR) sequences and T1-weighted pre- and post-contrast sequences allows an accurate evaluation of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. In patients without signal alterations or complete signal loss on fat-suppressed and T1-weighted spin-echo images, administration of i.v. contrast is not necessary. In case of bone marrow edema on fat-supressed images, contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images are required to identify viable osseous fragments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several studies report occupational orthopedic problems among interventional cardiologists. These health problems are usually multifactorial. However, the personal protective equipment used should play a major role. An online survey was conducted to determine the frequency of such health problems among interventional radiologists and to correlate them with the use of personal radiation protective clothing. An anonymous online survey that comprised of 17 questions was sent via e-mail to 1427 members of the German Society for Interventional Radiology (DeGIR) in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The questions were focused on interventional workload, the use of personal radiation protection apparel and orthopedic problems. Given the different scale levels, the associations between the variables were analyzed using different statistical methods. A significance level of p < 0.05 was chosen. There were 221 survey responders (15.5 % response rate). About half of responders (47.7 %) suffered from more than five episodes of orthopedic problems during their interventional career. Lumbar spine was involved in 81.7 % of these cases, cervical spine in 32.8 %, shoulder in 28.5 % and knee in 24.7 %. Because of orthopedic problems, 16.1 % of the responders had to reduce and 2.7 % had to stop their interventional practice. The number of affected body regions correlates with the fit of the radiation protection means (p < 0.05, r = 0.135) and the reduction of activity as an interventional radiologist (p < 0.05, r = −0.148). Overall, the survey reveals widespread orthopedic problems at several body regions among interventional radiologists, associated with the fit of radiation protection systems, among other factors.
