Abstract

International audience; Due to strain and ligand effects, the simultaneous presence of concave and convex surfaces and their highly-defective nanostructure (atomic vacancies, grain boundaries), highly defective hollow PtNi/C electrocatalysts have proven to enhance remarkably the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics [1,2]. Likewise, PtNi aerogel [3], jagged PtNi nanowires [4,5] feature both high concentration of structural defects and enhanced ORR activity. On the other hand, and inspired from single crystal approach, nanostructured octahedral-shaped PtNi/C electrocatalysts exhibiting only Pt(111) facets are among the most active ORR electrocatalysts [6,7]. This presentation will show how structure-activity-stability relationships of this two classes of materials can be unified via a unique descriptor, the Surface Distorsion, derived from a physical parameter, the microstrain obtained from X-ray diffraction patterns [8].

Abstract

SSCI-VIDE+ECI2D+LPI; International audience; Determining the relationships between structure, oxidation state and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity is fundamental to design improved anode catalysts for polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyser (PEMWE) devices. In this study, four IrOx nanocatalysts differing from each other by the chemical composition were characterized before and after ageing in conditions simulating PEMWE anode operation. By combining identical location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemistry, we highlighted and decoded complex relationships between chemical composition of the different nanocatalysts, nature of the support material, and OER electrocatalytic activity at the beginning and the end of life of the electrode. Independently on the chemical nature of the fresh nanocatalyst, Ir(III), Ir(IV) and Ir(V) species were monitored after electrochemical ageing. Our analysis suggests that Ir(V) species account for a major part of the OER activity, while Ir(III) species are responsible for its decay.

Abstract

Introduction : La maladie de crohn (MC) est une maladie inflammatoire chronique caractérisée par une modification du microbiote intestinal ainsi qu’une expansion du tissu adipeux (TA) mésentérique. Actuellement, les traitements utilisés dans la MC ne sont malheureusement pas curatifs, ont de nombreux effets secondaires et un coût prohibitif. Dans ce contexte l’activité physique (AP) pourrait être une thérapie alternative ou complémentaire, attractive et innovante via ses propriétés anti-inflammatoires, sa capacité à diminuer efficacement le TA et à moduler favorablement le microbiote intestinal. Dans ce contexte, l’objectif de cette étude était d'analyser l’impact de l’AP sur le microbiote intestinal et le TA d’un modèle murin mimant l’inflammation intestinale suite à une infection bactérienne. Matériels et Méthodes : Trente-six souris CEABAC10 mâles ont été réparties en deux groupes : l’un bénéficiant d’une roue d’activité spontanée (ROUE) et l’autre sans roue (groupe contrôle =CONT). Ces deux groupes ont été soumis à un régime « high fat/high sugar » (HF/HS) durant 12 semaines. La distance parcourue et la vitesse ont été enregistrées. La composition corporelle des animaux a été évaluée par échoMRI. Des mesures de glycémie, d’insulinémie à jeun ainsi qu’un test de tolérance au glucose ont été réalisés pour évaluer l'équilibre glycémique. A la fin des 12 semaines, les souris ont été infectées par la souche AIEC LF82, puis sacrifiées 10 jours plus tard. L’état inflammatoire a été évalué par le dosage ELISA de la lipocaline fécale et des cytokines (IL-6 et KC) au niveau adipeux et colique. La composition du microbiote intestinal associé au tissu intestinal a été analysée par séquençage de l’ADN 16S par Illumina MiSeq. Résultats : Sur les 12 semaines, le groupe ROUE a parcouru en moyenne 3,6 ± 0,4 km par jour à une vitesse moyenne de 8,5 ± 0,7 m.min-1. Le poids des animaux du groupe ROUE était plus faible de la 7ème à la 12ème semaine. La prise de masse grasse (MG) totale (en g et %) à 12 semaines était moindre dans le groupe ROUE par rapport au groupe CONT. Une corrélation négative a été mise en évidence entre la MG totale et la distance parcourue (r=-0,5 ; p 0,05). Avant l’infection, l’inflammation intestinale et l’équilibre glycémique n’étaient pas impactés par l’AP. Toutefois, la distance parcourue ou la vitesse moyenne étaient associées à une glycémie à jeun plus faible et à une meilleure tolérance au glucose (p

Abstract

International audience; This chapter highlights a part of the work carried out within the framework of the DESIRABLE project ("DESIgning the Insect bioRefinery to contribute to a more sustainABLE agro-food industry"), funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR). Here, our aim is to present original research results to operators willing to implement insect-based value-chains for feed, and to decision-makers eager to understand the main related stakes. Our tasks focused on the practical organization of mealworm larvae (T. molitor) raising and processing, in middle-sized (about 400 tons of larvae per year) and very large-sized (about 2000 tons per year) processing systems. The objective was to monitor health hazards and to organize production chains in the best way possible, in order to make human operations smooth and efficient, while accounting for the physiological needs of insects. In this chapter, we have designed in detail relevant insect "group management" for middlesized farming systems, some being focused on farrow-to-wean stage, and others specialized in insect fattening. We highlight improvement avenues, which would deserve additional developments in the future. For very large-sized production systems, we suggest adequate group management, and we identify the technical difficulties which hamper the setting-up of such huge integrated systems, to date. We present how we have established three different kinds of processes for an annual production of 10,000 tons, from larvae to flour. We also present the features of intermediate by-products, by generating data evaluating the flows of energy and matter, thus leading the way towards a possible economic feasibility. We raise some remaining questions to be explored. We also provide directions for environmental and economic evaluation. These results show the way for future scientific investigations, in accordance with sound social concerns. In part "Insects as animal feed".

Abstract

Symposium on Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFC) held during the 232nd Meeting of The Electrochemical-Society, National Harbor, MD, OCT 01-05, 2017; International audience; Hollow nanoparticles made of a noble metal and a non-noble metal can be synthesized by a combination of galvanic replacement and the nanoscale Kirkendall effect. In these nanostructures, a metallic shell composed of individual nanocrystallites interconnected via grain boundaries surrounds a central cavity that is accessible to molecules through nanometre-sized pores. Moreover, because atomic vacancies enter the metal lattice during their formation, the surface of hollow metal nanoparticles is jagged both at the atomic and the nanometre scale. That gives them specific electrocatalytic properties, which are illustrated with reactions of increasing complexity (COads monolayer electrooxidation, oxygen reduction reaction, methanol and ethanol electrooxidation) and rationalized with Density Functional Theory calculations.

A study is conducted to identify the role of ruthenium promoters in enhancing electrocatalytic activity toward organic fuels for fuel cells, with particularly concerns on the methanol decomposition product, surface CO. Different methods used to prepare Ru-decorated Pt single crystal surfaces while reviewing Ru-decorated Pt nanoparticles along with the methods of characterization and testing of their activity.

49. Ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) investigation on Pt/C, Rh/C, and Pt-based bi- and tri-metallic electrocatalysts: A DEMS and in situ FTIR study

Abstract

The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) was studied on Pt/C, Rh/C, Pt-Rh/C, Pt-SnO2/C and Pt-Rh-SnO2/C using on-line differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) in a flow-cell system and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (in situ FTIR). The electrocatalysts were synthesized by a modified polyol method and physically characterized by inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrocatalytic activity of the materials was tested for the EOR and the electrooxidation of a monolayer of adsorbed CO (COad being an intermediate of the EOR). Both in situ FTIR and DEMS investigations revealed that COad electrooxidation occurs at lower potentials on Pt-SnO2/C and Pt-Rh-SnO2/C than on Pt/C, Rh/C and Pt-Rh/C. A good correspondence was found between the (intensity vs. potential) variations of the m/z=22 mass-to-charge signal and of the IR band at 2343cm-1, both strictly assigned to CO2.

50. Highly-active Pd-Cu electrocatalysts for oxidation of ubiquitous oxygenated fuels

Abstract

Nanostructured palladium-copper electrocatalysts with Pd:Cu ratios of 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1 were synthesized using a Sacrificial Support Method (SSM) in combination with the thermal reduction of metal precursors. The materials were comprehensively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM and TEM), surface area measurements (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, BET) and Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectroscopy (DEMS). The SSM method enables the preparation of nano-sized unsupported Pd-Cu catalysts with uniformly-distributed particles and high surface area, in the range of 40 m(2) g(catalyst)(-1). Their catalytic activity for the electrooxidation of several alcohols (methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol and glycerol) was investigated in alkaline media. In situ Infrared Reflection Adsorption Spectroscopy (IRRAS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were used in order to understand the mechanism of the various alcohols electrooxidation reactions.
