Despite the continued focus on profiling gambling helpline callers, little is known about the characteristics of callers in Macao. To address this gap, this study aims to investigate the characteristics of problem gamblers calling the helpline in Macao and explore the regional differences between callers from Macao, mainland China, and Hong Kong. Specifically, the study examined their demographics, helpline usage, and gambling-related characteristics. The study used data collected by SKHSSCO between 2015 and 2021. The results showed that, at the aggregate level, the helpline callers in Macao were male, young, and full-time employees. The majority used the telephone and reported problems with casino table games. In addition, the referral rate was relatively low, while the rate of suicidal ideation was comparatively high. The results also revealed that callers from Macao, mainland China, and Hong Kong were notably distinct in these characteristics. The findings shed light on how to increase helpline accessibility and create tailored interventions and prevention efforts to better support individuals affected by problem gambling. This study assesses the impact of Mainland China's open-door and closed-door tourism policies on tourist arrivals in Taiwan using the regression control method. The period from 2001 to 2019 highlights that political dynamics significantly influence tourism flows. The enactment of the open-door policy (2008–2015) coincided with a marked increase of Mainland Chinese tourists in Taiwan, averaging an annual rise of 2.19 million. In contrast, the closed-door policy (2016–2019) saw a drastic average annual reduction of 2.53 million visitors. These stark contrasts confirm the potent effect of political policies on tourism. Although studies have been made of different subtypes of individuals who committed sexual homicides, the research into nonstranger and stranger sexual homicides remains limited. This study therefore aimed to examine whether those who sexually murder nonstrangers differ from those who kill strangers. Data derived from police records, court documents, and published case reports spanning a 31 year period (1988–2018) in mainland China were used to examine the modus operandi of 127 males who committed sexual homicides (45 nonstranger and 82 stranger cases). Relative to nonstranger sexual homicides, stranger sexual homicides were more likely to have been committed by individuals with a previous sexual offense conviction and the victims were more likely to have been single and employed at the time of the offense. Furthering the analysis, a logistic regression found that individuals who targeted strangers were significantly more likely to have committed their homicide at an outdoor location, to have been sexually motivated, and to have used murder weapons that required more physical strength than those who killed nonstranger victims. While problem-based learning (PBL) is common in Western medical schools, its feasibility in China is questioned due to cultural differences. This systematic review aims to summarize the application of PBL in medical education in mainland China based on existing literature, as well as to identify the challenges and opportunities encountered in its implementation.A systematic literature review was conducted using electronic databases, including MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, Wan fang and CNKI databases. Grey literature sources were explored using Google Scholar. The search was limited to articles that include at least one English abstract up to May 1st, 2023. The inclusion criteria were studies that reported the use of PBL in medical education in mainland China.A total of 21 articles were included in the final analysis. The findings indicate that PBL is a well-adopted and effective learning method in most medical education, especially for developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. However, the application of PBL in mainland China is limited due to various challenges, including faculty resistance, inadequate resources and cultural barriers. To effectively address these challenges, it is essential to provide faculty training, develop appropriate assessment methods to evaluate student progress within the PBL framework and create conducive spaces and resources that support collaborative learning and critical thinking.The utilization of PBL in mainland China holds potential for enhancing medical education. However, its successful implementation requires significant efforts to address the identified challenges. Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement) (IMERG) is the primary high spatiotemporal resolution precipitation product of the GPM era. To assess the applicability of the latest released IMERG_V07 in mainland China, this study systematically evaluates the error characteristics of IMERG_V07 from the perspective of different seasons, precipitation intensity, topography, and climate regions on an hourly scale. Ground-based meteorological observations are used as the reference, and the performance improvement of IMERG_V07 relative to IMERG_V06 is verified. Error evaluation is conducted in terms of precipitation amount and precipitation frequency, and an improved error component procedure is utilized to trace the error sources. The results indicate that IMERG_V07 exhibits a smaller RMSE in mainland China, especially with significant improvements in the southeastern region. IMERG_V07 shows better consistency with ground station data. IMERG_V07 shows an overall improvement of approximately 4% in capturing regional average precipitation events compared to IMERG_V06, with the northwest region showing particularly notable enhancement. The error components of IMERG_V06 and IMERG_V07 exhibit similar spatial distributions. IMERG_V07 outperforms V06 in terms of lower Missed bias but slightly underperforms in Hit bias and False bias compared to IMERG_V06. IMERG_V07 shows improved ability in capturing precipitation frequency for different intensities, but challenges remain in capturing heavy precipitation events, missing light precipitation, and winter precipitation events. Both IMERG_V06 and IMERG_V07 exhibit notable topography dependency in terms of Total bias and error components. False bias is the primary error source for both versions, except in winter, where high-altitude regions (DEM > 1200 m) primarily contribute to Missed bias. IMERG_V07 has enhanced the accuracy of precipitation retrieval in high-altitude areas, but there are still limitations in capturing precipitation events. Compared to IMERG_V06, IMERG_V07 demonstrates more concentrated error component values in the four climatic regions, with reduced data dispersion and significant improvement in Missed bias. The algorithm improvements in IMERG_V07 have the most significant impact in arid regions. False bias serves as the primary error source for both satellite-based precipitation estimations in the four climatic regions, with a secondary contribution from Hit bias. The evaluation results of this study offer scientific references for enhancing the algorithm of IMERG products and enhancing users' understanding of error characteristics and sources in IMERG. As a locative media, Blued articulates physical and digital space in the form of localization, giving a mediated visibility to its users who are not visible in physical space, thus making the city a queering code/space. This can transform social accessibility and the ways that gays come together and interact in local spaces. Taking mainland China, dominated by heteronomativity, as a field, this paper focuses on the visibility negotiation and social accessibility practices in Bluedbased queering code/space. Using the digital anthropology method, this study found that Blued-based visibility is essential for non-closeted gay men to gain a sense of local belonging and community inclusion. Offline accessibility is a crucial demand for Blued users, but until then they have negotiated visibility through selective disclosure of social cues. At the same time, Blued users face visibility asymmetries and risks in the pursuit of accessibility. This study then argues that in the Blued-based queering code/space, the gay men constantly reconcile accessibility with others by managing visibility in a heteronormative urban space. The manufactured capital, usually denoted as material stocks from an industrial ecology perspective, has thus far received wide attention in sustainability and circularity science. Sustainable resource management should be rooted in detailed knowledge of manufactured capital accumulation in society at a high spatial resolution. Previous studies demonstrated that night‐time light (NTL) data provide a great opportunity for monitoring material stocks dynamics at a higher spatial resolution on the regional and global scale. However, the potential of historical–geographical refined material stocks has not been fully analyzed and explored because of the inconsistency of NTL images detected by the different satellites. In this study, based on a new set of material stocks data in China and harmonized NTL images (1992–2018), we map the national stocks of 13 bulk materials (including cement, gravel, wood, brick, sand, asphalt, glass, lime, plastic, rubber, copper, aluminum, and steel) at a 1 × 1 km resolution from 1992 to 2018. The results find that the total material stocks increased from 190,000 to 460,000 t/km2 between 1992 and 2018. Among the five end‐use sectors, buildings have the highest density of 430,000 t/km2, while domestic appliances have the lowest density of 140 t/km2. Four manufactured capital clusters, including the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei, and Chengdu–Chongqing agglomerations, possess 38% of the national total stocks in 2018, revealing an unbalanced distributed pattern of manufactured capital across China. Purpose: Parenting for Lifelong Health for Young Children (PLH-YC) is a program to prevent child maltreatment. This study aimed to examine the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effects of the adapted program for Chinese parents. Methods: A pre–post single-arm pilot trial was conducted with 21 Chinese parents. A mixed-method design was utilized to collect questionnaire-based quantitative data and qualitative data of interviews and focus group discussions. Results: Program implementation was feasible, with overall high recruitment, enrollment, attendance, acceptability and fidelity. Quantitative results demonstrated reductions in general child maltreatment, physical and emotional abuse, child behavioral problems, and improvements in positive parenting. Thematic analyses identified reduced violent discipline, psychological aggression, and child behavioral problems, strengthened parent–child bonds, increased parenting confidence, and decreased family conflict. Conclusion: The adapted PLH-YC program for Chinese parents has shown good feasibility and acceptability, and exhibited a significant association with reduced child maltreatment. The comparative examination of different groups of sexual homicide offenders (SHOs) is currently limited. To expand our understanding of Chinese sexual homicides, this study aimed to distinguish between the modus operandi (MO) characteristics of repeat (i.e., with previous arrest and/or conviction) and nonrepeat (i.e., without previous arrest and/or conviction) offenders. Data were gathered from police arrest records, court documents, and published case reports in mainland China, covering a 31‐year period (1988–2018). A sample of 86 male SHOs (31 repeat and 55 nonrepeat offenders) was identified and the offenders' MO characteristics were examined. Compared with nonrepeat offenders, repeat offenders were significantly more likely to commit sexual murder in outdoor locations, approach their victims initially using a non‐surprise approach, engage in nonvaginal penetration of their victims, use a personal weapon to kill their victims, and move their victims' bodies away from the crime scene. However, repeat offenders were less likely to be arrested immediately after committing the murder. Despite suicide in younger population having become a severe public health issue, information on the prevalence of suicidality among Chinese children and adolescents is still limited. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of suicidal ideation, suicide plans, and suicide attempts in Chinese children and adolescents aged under 18 years. A meta-analysis was conducted based on English and Chinese publications from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2020 using random-effects models. Based on 132 eligible studies with a combined total of 1,103,309 Chinese children and adolescents below 18 years old, the pooled prevalence of the overall suicidal ideation, suicide plans, and suicide attempts were 15.4% (95% CI [14.3, 16.6]), 6.4% (95% CI [5.5, 7.4]) and 3.5% (95% CI [3.1, 4.1]), respectively. The subgroup analyses showed that there were significant variations of prevalence of suicidal risks across genders, school stages, and geographical areas in mainland China. It was the first systematic review and meta-analysis to show suicidality among younger population aged below 18 years is prevalent in mainland China. This study suggests that gender-age-region-specific prevention and intervention programs should be urgently needed to reduce suicidal risks among Chinese children and adolescents. The species checklist is the basic data that reflects the species diversity in a country or region. In order to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the taxonomic study of oribatid mites in China and the 60th anniversary of the Special Committee of Acarology of the Entomological Society of China, and to explore the China's biodiversity, and scientifically answer "how many species and what species are there in China", we compiled a checklist of Chinese oribatid mites, including a total of 1000 species and 35 subspecies in 311 genera and 158 subgenera representing 112 families. In addition, we provided a brief history of taxonomic research on oribatid mites in China in the past 100 years, Chinese name, literature citations and provincial distribution information of each species and subspecies, and a list of species nomina nuda. Purpose: This study examines principal rotation in China to gain empirical insights from the policy analysis and succession strategies that principals employ to gain internal and external support in their new schools. Design/methodology/approach: We employed document analysis and a case study approach. Interviews were conducted with officials in 5 local educational agencies and 40 principals from 5 different regions who were undergoing rotation. Thematic analysis was used to identify common patterns and themes in the interview responses. Findings: We explored how the principal-rotation policy was implemented, including the goals, standards, targeted principals, tools and other aspects of the policy in China. The study revealed the challenges faced by the rotated principals and their succession strategies. Abstract Background Bacterial drug resistance represents a significant global concern, with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis posing a particularly grave threat to contemporary healthcare systems. This study aims to reveal the reasons for the prevalence of VRE in China. Methods This study collected data from the China Antimicrobial Resistance Detection System, China Statistical Yearbook, and China Meteorological Network. The collected data are meticulously organized and subjected to both single-factor and multi-factor analyses. An accurate multiple linear regression model was developed by utilizing this comprehensive dataset. Results Single-factor analysis revealed significant regional variations in the resistance rate of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (P = 0.003). Specifically, there were noteworthy disparities observed between regions experiencing temperate and monsoon climates (P = 0.029; P = 0.005). Furthermore, multi-factor regression analysis demonstrated a negative correlation between the drug resistance rate and both rainfall and rGDP, while a positive correlation was observed with nPI. Conclusion We successfully established a prediction model for the VRE and found that the resistance rate was low in areas with high rainfall and high per capita economic income, but high in areas with many specialized public health institutions. This is critical for public health strategies and helps policymakers and healthcare practitioners tailor antibiotic resistance approaches to local geography, meteorology, economic conditions.

Numerous studies have noted the difficulties in promoting a common national identity curriculum due to increasing tension between the concepts of local autonomy and national cohesion. Hong Kong's promotion of Moral and National Education provides an interesting case to examine two aspects of this tension – what national identity education goals can be selected when local people enjoy different rights, and how local education agents can select content and pedagogy to address such goals. This article analyses two sample textbook lessons, two teachers' teaching plans for this subject, and memos from related curriculum development meetings. The comparisons reveal that textbook adaption is a consistent and important part of teacher-textbook interaction, with three major patterns emerging from Hong Kong teachers' interactions with textbooks. Wind shear is one of the crucial parameters in wind resource assessment and also serves as a vital parameter and basis for determining wind turbines' selection and hub height. Existing studies have only focused on typical underlying surface areas, but a relatively limited comprehensive analysis of wind shear characteristics in different complex environments remains. This study analyzes the daily and monthly variations in wind shear index (α) at the station scale based on the observations from 754 wind measurement towers across land surfaces in China. The distribution and empirical values of wind shear in different wind regions and underlying surface types are also investigated. The research findings indicate that the wind shear index derived from fitting the complete annual average wind speeds at multiple height levels of meteorological towers can accurately characterize the stratification state of the atmospheric boundary layer. The variation pattern of solar radiation influences the daily α value in typical regions. In mountainous and desert areas, the monthly variation tends to be higher in autumn and winter and lower in spring and summer. However, its monthly variation shows relatively smaller fluctuations in plain regions. The comprehensive α value over land regions in China is 0.135. The α values for I, II, III, and IV wind fields are 0.111, 0.163, 0.1, and 0.153, respectively. Its values for mountainous, plains, grassland, and desert regions are 0.12, 0.273, 0.123, and 0.104, respectively. By conducting statistical analysis on α values across different wind regions, guidance is provided for extrapolating surface wind speeds to hub-height wind speeds. Prior studies on gay tourism have focused primarily on Western cultures, and research on geographically and culturally distant Chinese gay tourism is limited. Using social identity theory and identity-based motivation theory as a framework, this study bridges an observed 'Chinese gay' gap by exploring the roles of motivation, identity, and space in the travel experiences of Mainland Chinese gay tourists in Thailand. A netnographic approach was employed to collect textual data from 27 travel postings, generating a total of 143,000 characters for analysis. The results produced an integration matrix model of travel motivations and gay identity comprising four quadrants. Identified travel motivations include gay space, atmosphere, knowledge, prostitution, socialization and belongingness, culture and sightseeing, local tourism attributes and activities, escapism and relaxation, and sexual encounters. The results also show that tourists' gay identity directs their travel motivations, and travel experiences, in turn, reinforce their gay identity. In addition, tourists' gay identity can be validated and contextualized within the gay space. By interlinking the concepts of motivation, identity, and space, the present research contributes to the understanding of queer tourism geographies in a Chinese context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Articles searching was conducted across six databases, including MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and WanFangdata. Quality appraisal was performed using the revised Cochrane risk of bias tool. A total of 26 articles met the inclusion criteria, involving 2,197 participants with a mean age of 69.19 years. The participants' ages ranged from 63.85 to 81.75 years. The evaluated non-pharmacological interventions included psychotherapy, acupuncture, exercise, massage, neurotherapy, and multidisciplinary interventions. The overall changes in pain intensity varied from -5.19 to -0.65 on a numeric rating scale ranging from zero to ten. Non-pharmacological interventions proved effective in alleviating pain intensity among older adults in mainland China. Long characterized as a primary form of academic misconduct and a major threat to academic integrity, the issue of plagiarism has been extensively researched from multiple perspectives, including students' and academic staff's perceptions and attitudes concerning plagiarism, measures for detecting and deterring plagiarism and their effectiveness, and the higher education sector's response to plagiarism. Yet knowledge remains patchy regarding this last strand of research. With the aim of bridging this research gap, we examine and compare the plagiarism management policies adopted by a selection of universities in mainland China and Hong Kong, two contexts that have been influenced by different academic traditions. Analysis reveals both similarities and divergences in these universities' communication of plagiarism-related information, mechanism for plagiarism detection, provision of academic guidance and support for avoiding plagiarism, and competing discourses on plagiarism underpinning their mixed approaches to the problem. The prevailing research on adaptation primarily centers around the settlement of international students and immigrants in different cultural environments. However, there is a notable gap in understanding the intra-cultural adaptation process for individuals from postcolonial areas when relocating to their home country. The primary focus of the current study lies in constructing a predictive model that delineates the psychological adaptation experienced by Macau students studying in Mainland China. In total, two hundred and fifty-five Macau students completed a questionnaire which assessed variables falling into two categories: identity-related variables, such as language proficiency and identity, and intergroup-related variables, including intergroup contact and the quality of contact, and psychological adaptation. The findings from the present study revealed that identity and quality of contact continued to make significant contributions to psychological adaptation in intra-cultural environments as in inter-cultural environments, whereas language proficiency and intergroup contact were unrelated to psychological adaptation in intra-cultural adaptation. The present study extended the adaptation research by transporting hypotheses and findings from inter-cultural adaptation and testing their validity and applicability in postcolonial contexts. Simple Summary: While it is widely believed that feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a dangerous epidemic disease, the prevalence of FIP in Chinese cats is currently unknown. Our findings indicate that the prevalence of FIP in Chinese cats is influenced by age, gender, and breed. We recommend controlling the scale of cat breeding, enhancing cat immunity, and particularly focusing on health management in kittens and continuous monitoring of FIP in cats. To evaluate the overall prevalence of FIP infection in cats in mainland China and associated risk factors, studies on the prevalence of FIP conducted from 1 January 2008 to 20 December 2023 were retrieved from five databases—CNKI, Wanfang, PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect—and comprehensively reviewed. The 21 studies selected, with a total of 181,014 samples, underwent a rigorous meta-analysis after quality assessment. The results revealed a 2% prevalence of FIP (95% CI: 1–2%) through the random-effects model, showing considerable heterogeneity (I2 = 95.2%). The subsequent subgroup analysis revealed that the age and gender of cats are significant risk factors for FIP infection in mainland China. In order to effectively reduce and control the prevalence of FIP on the Chinese mainland, we suggest improving the immunity of cats, with special attention given to health management in kittens and intact cats, and continuously monitoring FIPV. Objectives: Test anxiety has a negative impact on college students' academic performance and mental health. This study evaluated the effects of a group program integrating Compassionate Mind Training (CMT) with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) on test anxiety and a range of secondary outcomes. It was hypothesized that a 6-week program would reduce test anxiety and improve a range of mental health outcomes, compared to a wait-list condition. Method: A total of 64 college students (M = 20.26, SD = 1.63 years) with test anxiety (Test Anxiety Index greater than 49) were randomly assigned to either a 6-week intervention or wait-list control group. Participants completed a series of self-reports questionnaires before the intervention, after the intervention, and at a 4-month post-intervention follow-up. Results: The intervention significantly reduced test anxiety and improved self-compassion, the perceived ability to manage negative emotions, and general anxiety levels, with these effects persisting at the follow-up assessment. Moreover, the intervention group of participants experienced a further significant reduction in test anxiety and a significant improvement in subjective well-being 4 months after intervention. Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence supporting the efficacy of an integrated CMT with CBT group program for alleviating test anxiety. Abstract Background Little was known about the relationship between perceived neighborhood environment and depression among residents living in mega-communities. ABSTRACT Self‐efficacy refers to an individual's judgement, belief and perception of their capability to accomplish specific tasks, which is crucial for children's mental well‐being. The primary objective of this scoping review was to systematically examine intervention studies aimed at enhancing children's self‐efficacy in Mainland China, intending to inform social work practices in child services. We conducted a comprehensive search of articles in Web of Science and CNKI to review empirical intervention studies published before March 2022 in either Chinese or English. The selection criteria included all empirical intervention studies focused on improving self‐efficacy in children in Mainland China. A total of 17 studies were identified and included in the review. Among these, six studies focused on general self‐efficacy, while the remaining 11 examined domain‐specific self‐efficacy. Seven studies provided compensatory interventions to children facing adversity, five studies implemented preventive services, and another five offered developmental services to children in regular circumstances. Fourteen programmes exclusively served children, while three studies involved parents. Notably, most of the included interventions were facilitated by research teams from universities, with only one led by a social work department. Education modalities and comprehensive interventions were commonly used and found to be effective. The current state of intervention studies underscores the need for programmes that utilize effective strategies and approaches to enhance children's self‐efficacy. • DOMs in various farmland soils were characterized by EEM-PARAFAC and FTICR-MS. • National spatial distributions of soil DOM were investigated across mainland China. • Numerous molecular formulae were detected, covering a wide range, by 15T FTICR-MS. • The difference in DOM spatial heterogeneity was reflected in CHOS and CHONS. • Lignin and tannin contributed top proportions probably due to soil-derived humus. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an essential role in many geochemical processes, however its complexity, chemical diversity, and molecular composition are poorly understood. Soil samples were collected from 500 vegetable fields in administrative regions of mainland China, of which 122 were selected for further investigation. DOM properties were characterized by three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) (field intensity is 15 Tesla). Our results indicated that the main constituents were UVA humic-like substances, humic-like substances, fulvic acid-like substances, and tyrosine-like substances. A total of 10,989 molecular formulae with a mass range of 100.04 to 799.59 Da were detected, covering the mass spectrometric information of the soil samples from 27 different regions. CHO and CHON molecules were dominant in DOM, whereas lignin, tannins, and aromatic substances served as the main components. The results of cluster analysis revealed that the soil properties in Jiangxi Province were considerably different from those in other regions. The key backgrounds of the DOM molecular characteristics in the vegetable-field soil samples across mainland China were provided at the molecular level, with large abundance and great variability. The Curie Point Depth (CPD) marks a significant temperature boundary (∼580°C) within the Earth's lithosphere. However, there has been ongoing debate regarding its spatial distribution. In this research, we utilized the Equivalent Source Method (ESM) based on Gauss‐Legendre integration and data obtained from the EMM2017 model, along with a five‐layer susceptibility model, to generate a 0.5° × 0.5° grid of continental CPD distribution for China and surroundings. The average CPD in the study area is 30.4 km, which is slightly shallower than the average depth of global continental Moho (∼33 km). Notably, stable and cold cratonic basins, such as the Tarim Basin and the Sichuan Basin, exhibit deep CPD of ∼45 km. In contrast, the North China Craton, which has experienced significant tectono‐thermal activity since the Late Mesozoic, shows moderate CPD of ∼30 km and a gradual uplift from west to east. The Tuva‐Mongol orocline within the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, the Deccan Volcanic Province in the Indian subcontinent and the Eastern Yangtze Craton have shallow CPD of ∼20 km. We estimate the surface heat flow by CPD, and the result is consistent with measurements within a RMSE of 18.1 mW/m2. When comparing the CPD with Moho, we find that the CPD may lie below Moho in stable and cold cratonic areas. In comparison to two recent global CPD models, our regional model demonstrates better alignment with tectonic features. Plain Language Summary: The Curie Point Depth (CPD) is the depth where crustal temperatures equal the Curie temperature of magnetite (∼580°C), the dominant magnetic mineral in the crust, and hence below which there is no magnetization. It is a crucial temperature boundary within the Earth's lithosphere, providing valuable insights into the lithospheric thermal structure and dynamic evolution. Traditionally, the CPD is mostly inverted by the Power Spectral Density (PSD) method in the frequency domain, which is more suitable for shallow CPD regions. Here, we determine a new 0.5° × 0.5° continental CPD model for China and surroundings utilizing an Equivalent Source Method (ESM) in the spatial domain. Then we estimate the surface heat flow and crustal temperature with this CPD model, and discuss its relation with the Moho interface. In diaspora and post-colonial communities, ethnic Chinese people tend to adopt names that are common in majority English-speaking countries. Compared to these communities, less attention has been paid to mainland Chinese, where the practice of adopting an English name is in the process of becoming normalised among the current generation of fifteen to thirty-five-year-olds. This paper is part of a wider project to examine the English naming practices of Chinese students from mainland China. It focuses specifically on name choices and the reasons for these choices. A 44-item questionnaire was completed by 357 mainland Chinese students, and this paper reports the quantitative data relevant to name choices and the reasons behind them. The results display an array of preferred English names and suggest that one of the key aspects of name choice is the uniqueness of the name, which served multiple purposes: distinguishing themselves from the peers, enabling them to be remembered, and expressing their identity. Additionally, Chinese students demonstrated a high degree of agency in their name choices, which was evident in the creative approaches used in name selection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Deer tuberculosis is a chronic zoonotic infectious disease, despite the existence of socio-economic and zoonotic risk factors, but at present, there has been no systematic review of deer tuberculosis prevalence in mainland China. The aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate the overall prevalence of deer TB in mainland China and to assess possible associations between potential risk factors and the prevalence of deer tuberculosis. Methodology: This study was searched in six databases in Chinese and English, respectively (1981 to December 2023). Four authors independently reviewed the titles and abstracts of all retrieved articles to establish the inclusion exclusion criteria. Using the meta-analysis package estimated the combined effects. Cochran's Q-statistic was used to analyze heterogeneity. Funnel plots (symmetry) and used the Egger's test identifying publication bias. Trim-andfill analysis methods were used for validation and sensitivity analysis. we also performed subgroup and meta-regression analyses. Results: In this study, we obtained 4,400 studies, 20 cross-sectional studies were screened and conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. Results show: The overall prevalence of tuberculosis in deer in mainland China was 16.1% (95% confidence interval (CI):10.5 24.6; (Deer tuberculosis infected 5,367 out of 22,215 deer in mainland China) 5,367/22215; 1981 to 2023). The prevalence in Central China was the highest 17.5% (95% CI:14.0-21.9; 63/362), and among provinces, the prevalence in Heilongjiang was the highest at 26.5% (95% CI:13.2-53.0; 1557/4291). Elaphurus davidianus was the most commonly infected species, with a prevalence of 35.3% (95% CI:18.5-67.2; 6/17). We also assessed the association between geographic risk factors and the incidence of deer tuberculosis. Conclusion: Deer tuberculosis is still present in some areas of China. Assessing the association between risk factors and the prevalence of deer tuberculosis showed that reasonable and scientific-based breeding methods, a suitable breeding environment, and rapid and accurate detection methods could effectively reduce the prevalence of deer tuberculosis. In addition, in the management and operation of the breeding base, improving the scientific feed nutrition standards and establishing comprehensive standards for disease prevention, immunization, quarantine, treatment, and disinfection according to the breeding varieties and scale, are suggested as ways to reduce the prevalence of deer tuberculosis. The Wandering in Scandinavia symposium, held at the UCCA Centre for Contemporary Art in Beijing in December 2023, invited international experts, scholars and young academics to present new research on Nordic/Scandinavian film and television in China. The symposium offered an unprecedented opportunity to discuss the relevance of Nordic cinema in mainland China. While Nordic films are often considered niche products in the Chinese market, in an era of rapid globalization, Chinese scholarship offers a distinctive perspective on how Nordic films connect with and influence audiences and creatives in this vital market. Papers focused on Nordic feature films, including animation, and documentaries, examining these films from diverse perspectives, including auteurist studies, ecological research and historical investigation. The Young Scholars Forum introduced fresh perspectives on topics ranging from queer cinema to war films and new technologies, providing innovative examples of how Nordic cinema travels transnationally. Introduction: This research aims to investigate the impact of students' language assessment literacy (LAL) on their cognition. The study specifically examines how different levels of LAL influence two critical factors: test anxiety and motivation to learn a second language. Methods: To achieve the research objectives, a questionnaire was administered to a sample of 415 university students in China. The questionnaire utilized a five-point Likert scale to assess students' levels of LAL, test anxiety, and motivation to learn a second language. Descriptive data were examined to reveal students' proficiency in LAL, along with their levels of test anxiety and motivation. Multilevel regression analyses were performed using Mplus to investigate whether students' LAL proficiency can predict their levels of test anxiety and motivation. Results: The findings indicated that the participating students had a proficiency level of approximately 60% in the content of the LAL questionnaire. The analysis further revealed the relationships between specific dimensions of LAL and both test anxiety and second language motivation. The multilevel regression analysis suggested that theoretical knowledge about language and language learning, the understanding of the impact and social value of language assessments, and the uses of assessments to enhance learning, positively predicted students' extrinsic motivation. Furthermore, students' understanding of the uses of assessments to learn and their theoretical knowledge about language learning were identified as positive predictors of intrinsic motivation. Additionally, it was observed that students' LAL did not significantly predict test anxiety. Discussion: These findings emphasize the significance of enhancing students' LAL due to the identified relationships between LAL dimensions and motivation to learn a second language. The study suggests pedagogical implications for improving LAL, with a focus on specific dimensions that positively impact students' motivation. The absence of a significant relationship between LAL dimensions and test anxiety prompts further exploration and consideration of additional factors influencing students' anxiety in language assessments. In recent decades, China has experienced substantial climate change and significant vegetation greenness due to the extensive implementation of artificial ecological restoration programs. However, the quantitative contributions of climatic and anthropogenic drivers to the national variations in associated evapotranspiration (ET) and gross primary productivity (GPP) over China at different climate zoning sub-regions remain unclear. Based on the analysis of climate factor and vegetation disturbance trends created by anthropogenic activities, this study constructed a remote sensing-based ecological model consisting of Penman–Monteith–Leuning (PML) and light use efficiency (LUE) components. The proposed model simulated the spatiotemporal changes in ET and GPP between 1999 and 2018 over China. The contributions of climatic factors and anthropogenic activities to ET and GPP variations were quantitatively calculated by ridge regression. The results show that (1) both interannual ET and GPP markedly increased, by 1.32 mm yr−1 and 8.01 g C m−2 yr−1, respectively; (2) vegetation changes due to anthropogenic disturbance made the dominant contribution to GPP variations over China, while the dominant factor influencing ET changes differed by sub-region due to the joint effects of vegetation and climate; (3) temperature and precipitation positively affected ET, while wind speed, humidity, and solar radiation negatively contributed to ET in most parts of Mainland China. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the proactive coping behaviors of Chinese social workers, the perceived importance of organizational job resources, and work engagement within the job demands-resources model. The participants were 423 licensed social workers. They completed self-report questionnaires on proactive coping behavior, organizational job resources, and work engagement. Following structural equation modeling, results indicated that organizational job resources and work engagement had significant associations with proactive coping behaviors. Moreover, proactive coping behaviors differed by demographic variables such as age, job position, and work experience. Resilience is essential for students to resist adversity, and low academic achievers (LAA) may experience more challenges in resilience development than high academic achievers (HAA). This study aimed to compare resilience between LAA and HAA and to analyse the effects of protective factors in order to inform social work practices. This study analysed 1125 school‐aged subjects derived from a large survey conducted in 23 districts/counties in eight provinces in mainland China. We ran independent sample t‐tests to compare resilience between LAA and HAA, ran linear regression models to analyse the effects of internal and external protective factors on resilience, and tested the mediation effects of the protective factors. This study found that LAA were less resilient and more vulnerable to adversity than HAA. Internal protective factors helped to explain resilience, two main subfactors of which—self‐efficacy and confidence—fully mediated the effects of academic performance and resilience. External protective factors did not significantly impact resilience. We propose service strategies to enhance self‐efficacy and confidence in LAA in order to improve their resilience in social work practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To examine the thematic features of dignity therapy generativity documents of advanced cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in mainland China from the perspective of meaning-making during dignity therapy. Methods: This is a qualitative descriptive study. Content analysis was used to analyze 24 dignity therapy generativity documents derived from a quasi-experimental trial of dignity therapy for advanced cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in a daycare center at a cancer hospital in northern China. Results: Among the 24 advanced cancer patients whose generativity documents were analyzed, 14 were male and ranged in age from 26 to 78 years (average = 50.3). Two dimensions emerged from the data: (1) the sources of meaning in life, which consisted of social relationships, things and circumstances providing meaning in life, and (2) the ultimate meaning in life, referring to finding one's real self and realizing the purpose in life, including personal life goals, dignity and autonomy, and morality of patients. Significance of results: The multidimensional constructs of meaning in life with distinctive traditional Chinese cultural characteristics could provide insights into dignity-conserving care for advanced cancer patients with Chinese culture and provide evidence for refining the implementation protocol of DT through intentionally addressing the ultimate meaning of patients in the therapeutic session. The mental well-being of PhD students is a major concern in higher education. However, very few studies have investigated the influencing factors of PhD students' subjective well-being (SWB) - an important indicator of mental well-being. Even no study on the influencing factors of PhD students' SWB has been undertaken in mainland China. Based on job demands-resources theory, the present study pioneers the investigation of the relationship between PhD students' psychological capital (PsyCap; comprising self-efficacy, hope, resilience, and optimism) and SWB (comprising positive affect, negative affect, and life satisfaction) in mainland China. It further examined the mediating role of academic engagement (comprising vigor, dedication, and absorption) in this relationship. PhD students (n = 376) from two comprehensive universities in Jiangsu province responded to an online survey. The results showed that (1) self-efficacy was positively associated with life satisfaction, hope was positively associated with positive affect, optimism was significantly associated with all three dimensions of SWB, but resilience was not significantly associated with any of the three SWB dimensions; and (2) dedication mediated the relationship between hope and life satisfaction and that between optimism and negative affect and life satisfaction, but vigor and absorption did not mediate any of the PsyCap-SWB relationships. A thorough evaluation of the recently released Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) is critical for both end-users and algorithm developers. In this study, six products from three versions of GSMaP version 8, including real time (NOW-R and NOW-C), near real time (NRT-R and NRT-C), and post-real time (MVK-R and MVK-C), are systematically and quantitatively evaluated based on time-by-time observations from 2167 stations in mainland China. Among each version, both products with and without gauge correction are adopted to detect the gauge correction effect. Error quantification is carried out on an hourly timescale. Three common statistical indices (i.e., correlation coefficient (CC), relative bias (RB), and root mean square error (RMSE)) and three event detection capability indices (i.e., probability of detection (POD), false alarm ratio (FAR), and critical success index (CSI)) were adopted to analyze the inversion errors in precipitation amount and precipitation event frequency across the various products. Additionally, in this study, we examine the dependence of GSMaP errors on rainfall intensity and elevation. The following main results can be concluded: (1) MVK-C exhibits the best ability to retrieve rainfall on the hourly timescale, with higher CC values (0.31 in XJ to 0.47 in SC), smaller RMSE values (0.14 mm/h in XJ to 0.99 mm/h in SC), and lower RB values (−4.78% in XJ to 16.03% in NC). (2) Among these three versions, the gauge correction procedure plays a crucial role in reducing errors, especially in the post-real-time version. After being corrected, MVK-C demonstrates an obvious CC value improvement (>0.3 on the hourly timescale) in various sub-regions, increasing the percentage of sites with CC values above 0.5 from 0.03% (MVK-R) to 28.47% (MVK-C). (3) GSMaP products generally exhibit error dependencies on precipitation intensity and elevation, particularly in areas with drastic elevation changes (such as 1200–1500 m and 3000–3300 m), where the accuracy of satellite precipitation estimates is significantly affected. (4) CC values decreased with an increasing rainfall intensity; RB and RMSE values increased with an increasing rainfall intensity. The results of this study may be helpful for algorithm developers and end-users and provide a scientific reference for different hydrological applications and disaster risk reduction. Social problem-solving skills (SPS) are essential to child development, especially for kunjing children without sufficient parental care (KCw/oSPC). This study aimed to design and implement a group-based pilot intervention programme to improve KCw/oSPC's SPS and assessed its effectiveness. This pilot intervention was a randomised controlled trial, fifty-seven KCw/oSPC at seventh grade (aged twelve to thirteen years) were recruited and randomly assigned into experimental (n  = 24) and waiting (n  = 33) groups. All participants in the experimental group received SPS training, whilst the waiting group did not receive any services at the research stage. Both pre- and post-test data about participants' SPS from both groups were analysed with Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, respectively. Results indicated that KCw/oSPC's SPS in the experimental group improved significantly, with large effect size (Cohen's d  =   1.15). This pilot study, although with limitations, contributed to informing future social work intervention studies and practice to promote KCw/oSPC's SPS in Mainland China and worldwide. The present study used subjective outcome assessment as an evaluation strategy to investigate participants' perspectives on a training program of a positive youth development program entitled "Tin Ka Ping P.A.T.H.S. Project." A sample of 150 respondents from secondary schools throughout mainland China were asked about their perceptions of training content, trainer performance, their own performance, and supportive services by filling in an evaluation questionnaire. Results showed that the participants overwhelmingly viewed the training program and trainers to be very positive, and they also perceived the program to have positive impact on their teaching. Besides, there were no significant differences in the evaluation between instructors in junior secondary schools and those in senior secondary schools. Consistent with previous findings, there were positive correlations amongst the different dimensions of subjective outcomes. Additionally, our findings indicated that the quality of the program emerged as a strong predictor for both training benefits and participants' overall satisfaction. Together with prior evaluation findings on training, the present results suggest that training workshops in mainland China were well received by potential program implementers who perceived they acquired useful knowledge, attitude and behavior through training and the training program empowered them and promoted the teacher quality of life. In recent years, the Chinese government has launched several policies to facilitate universities to develop performance measures closely related to national university rankings and resources allocation. Directed by these performance measures, academics employ various strategies to deal with the increasing requirements and pressure. Using a qualitative research method, we interviewed 32 informants in one top-tier and one second-tier university in Mainland China. Our study observed that first, academics mainly comply or adjust/adapt to the situation but obtain very limited space to contest. Second, academics decode that high-stakes rewards and punishment, frequently changing indicators, and governing tools that strongly stress visibility constitute the complicated pressure on them. Third, to try to obtain more opportunities, academics are eager to join research teams. Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement) (IMERG) is the primary high spatiotemporal resolution precipitation product of the GPM era. To assess the applicability of the latest released IMERG_V07 in mainland China, this study systematically evaluates the error characteristics of IMERG_V07 from the perspective of different seasons, precipitation intensity, topography, and climate regions on an hourly scale. Ground-based meteorological observations are used as the reference, and the performance improvement of IMERG_V07 relative to IMERG_V06 is verified. Error evaluation is conducted in terms of precipitation amount and precipitation frequency, and an improved error component procedure is utilized to trace the error sources. The results indicate that IMERG_V07 exhibits a smaller RMSE in mainland China, especially with significant improvements in the southeastern region. IMERG_V07 shows better consistency with ground station data. IMERG_V07 shows an overall improvement of approximately 4% in capturing regional average precipitation events compared to IMERG_V06, with the northwest region showing particularly notable enhancement. The error components of IMERG_V06 and IMERG_V07 exhibit similar spatial distributions. IMERG_V07 outperforms V06 in terms of lower Missed bias but slightly underperforms in Hit bias and False bias compared to IMERG_V06. IMERG_V07 shows improved ability in capturing precipitation frequency for different intensities, but challenges remain in capturing heavy precipitation events, missing light precipitation, and winter precipitation events. Both IMERG_V06 and IMERG_V07 exhibit notable topography dependency in terms of Total bias and error components. False bias is the primary error source for both versions, except in winter, where high-altitude regions (DEM > 1200 m) primarily contribute to Missed bias. IMERG_V07 has enhanced the accuracy of precipitation retrieval in high-altitude areas, but there are still limitations in capturing precipitation events. Compared to IMERG_V06, IMERG_V07 demonstrates more concentrated error component values in the four climatic regions, with reduced data dispersion and significant improvement in Missed bias. The algorithm improvements in IMERG_V07 have the most significant impact in arid regions. False bias serves as the primary error source for both satellite-based precipitation estimations in the four climatic regions, with a secondary contribution from Hit bias. The evaluation results of this study offer scientific references for enhancing the algorithm of IMERG products and enhancing users’ understanding of error characteristics and sources in IMERG.

The mis-representation of female homoeroticism in China and misunderstanding of films in this regard leads to the question: What explanatory frameworks should we adopt to analyze Chinese female homo-erotic films in the way that respects the local historical and cultural context? After studying the local history of women’s separatism and formation of lesbian identity under Western influences, I suggest two frameworks, namely, the matrix of female bonding and the matrix of lesbian sexuality. Adopting these two frameworks, respectively, I conduct close analysis of Sweet Eighteen (甜蜜18岁, 2012) and Fish and Elephant (今年夏天, 2001), to locate the “Chinese lesbianism” in these not very lesbian films in the eyes of American audience. I will argue that the narrative of homosexual-maternal transferability in the former resonates with Chinese women’s literature, while the narrative of homosexual normality and a coming-home rather than coming-out strategy in the latter film speak to the local specificity of lesbian discourse since the 1990s. Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a worldwide public health concern. With the widespread dissemination of prevention approaches to end CSA, numerous CSA prevention programs exist in developed countries, but there is little evidence on how these programs are performing in Mainland China. The aim of this study was to review the existing research focusing on CSA prevention programs in Mainland China. Studies of CSA prevention programs were identified by conducting a comprehensive search of major academic databases for Chinese and English research. Articles were retained if they were original empirical studies that conducted programs to prevent CSA in Mainland China and measured related outcomes. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria. A child-targeted, universally focused, and school-based educational program was the most common (n = 7), followed by specifically focused programs that covered migrant and left-behind children using group-based intervention strategies (n = 2) and ordinary parents with self-learning strategies (n = 2); one study delivered agency-based face-to-face education to parents with disabled children. However, the shortcomings in research design limited its replication to the broader population. CSA prevention program research in Mainland China is in an early stage due to the limited target populations, lack of large-scale government-led initiatives, and low involvement of multicomponent collaboration. We provide suggestions for conducting future research involving more inclusive programs for other populations, comprehensive programs with multiple targets and stakeholders, large-scale evidence-based research, culturally tailored and contextual adaptation programs.
