Abstract

On 26 - 27 April 2019, torrential rains triggered floods and landslides on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, particularly in Bengkulu Province. This extreme event resulted in many casualties and displaced thousands of people. At least nine districts were affected, including Bengkulu city, Kaur, North Bengkulu, Central Bengkulu, South Bengkulu, Seluma, Kepahiang, Lebong, and Rejang Lebong. Rain gauges in Bengkulu measured daily rainfall of 81 to 225 mm on 27 April 2019, with minimum and maximum rainfall were observed at Fatmawati station and Batu Roto station, respectively. This study aims to investigate the possible causes of extreme rainfall by analyzing the multiple timescales of atmospheric conditions. The subseasonal tropical waves of Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) were strong and active (Phase 3) during the event causing strong convection and heavy rainfall. Besides, the Equatorial Rossby (ER) waves were also active, which typically indicated by two low pressures at the north and south of Sumatra. The southern low pressure was known as the Tropical Cyclone Lorna that contributing to heavy rainfall and strong winds toward Bengkulu. Weather radar images in Bengkulu showed the eastward propagation of torrential rains from the Indian Ocean to Bengkulu, which depicts a typical diurnal cycle over Bengkulu. On 26 April 2019 at 08 LT, heavy rainfall was observed in the Indian Ocean moving eastward. At 14 LT, Bengkulu was hit by the torrential rains until night, which caused the floods and landslide on 27 April 2019 at 01 LT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Development Model Using Multi Predictors for Predicting the Onset of Rainy Season (Case Study in Northern Coastal West Java Province Indonesia)

Abstract

The prediction of the onset of rainy season is very important for many sectors especially for agricultural sector in order to make the best planning for planting calendar to get optimum paddy yield. Monsoon onset is characterized by the change of significant atmospheric circulation such as changes of wind direction; inter tropical convergence zone location, etc. This research used 16 predictors which have been selected using spatial correlation test at and above 95% significant level. Northern coastal west Java is the main rice production center in West Java province and contribute about 30% of total production of West Java Province. The selected predictors in the next process become indicators for the variability of rainy season onset and becoming predictors for climate statistical model. Through the many techniques, 3 models are resulted which are multiple linier regression, stepwise regression and principal component regression. These models produce the better performance to predict the onset of rainy season over northern coastal area of West Java Province including some extreme years during strong El Nino or La Nina events.

25. Reconstruction of Extreme Rainfall Event on September 19-20, 2017, Using a Weather Radar in Bengkulu of Sumatra Island.

Abstract

Extreme rainfall accompanied by strong winds hit the province of Bengkulu in the western coastal area of Sumatera Island during September 19-20, 2017, causing floods and landslides in Seluma and Central Bengkulu district. This extreme rainfall was recorded by Bengkulu Meteorological Station about 257.0 mm day -1 using rain-gauge observation. The spatial distribution of extreme rainfall cannot be seen if only using a rain-gauge observation in this location. The spatial distribution of extreme rainfall is needed to identify the impact of rainfall on landslides in large areas. The study aims to (1) develop the reconstruction of the spatial distribution of extreme rainfall using weather radar and (2) investigate the trigger that caused extreme rainfall by analyzing the synoptic-scale tropical waves. Each weather radar datum is saved in a Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicator (CAPPI). To get rainfall information, the CAPPI must be derived from Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) values. In this paper, we derived CAPPI using a Marshall-Palmer reflectivity-rain rate relationship. The result shows that rainfall formed on September 20, 2017, 21.00 UTC with total daily rainfall ranged between 176 and 247 mm in both districts and the mean of total daily rainfall has exceeded the average of monthly rainfall. The analysis of tropical waves suggests that only Kelvin waves were active and served as a possible trigger factor while the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and Equatorial Rossby (ER) waves were inactive during this extreme rainfall., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2020 Jaka A.
