In this paper, we study the determinants of credit risk in the Greek banking sector. Credit risk is related to bank asset quality and considered responsible for bank failures. In this context, we investigate how loan quality can be explained by accounting and macroeconomic factors. Aggregate loans loss provisions (LLP) are used as a proxy for measuring credit risk. Using quarterly aggregate data that span from 2001Q1 to 2012Q4, we examine a period that covers the recent financial crisis in Greece. The results of Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimations indicate that LLP is positively affected by unemployment, public debt, loans loss provisions of previous quarter and negatively by capital adequacy ratio. Therefore, our findings support the hypotheses that both macroeconomic environment and accounting information exert significant influence on the credit risk of Greek banking system.

This paper deals with the congruities in the main mechanisms governing nominal loanword integration, drawing data from three contact-induced dialectal systems of Greek, i.e. (a) Grekaniko (Griko and Bovese spoken in Southern Italy), which has been influenced by the local Romance varieties and Italian, (b) Heptanesian (spoken on the Ionian islands) and (c) Cretan (spoken on the island of Crete), which have been both affected by Venetian and Italian. It is shown that semantic, morphological and phonological factors conjointly regulate gender assignment to Romance loanwords in the dialects in question. I claim that the recipient systems resort to the available word-formation mechanisms in order to effect loanword accommodation. I argue that nouns of Romance origin are adopted by the three dialects in a uniform manner, i.e. through congruent strategies. Overall, this paper demonstrates that the integration of loans in a recipient linguistic system, which bears an overtly marked gender, may offer invaluable insights into grammatical gender assignment and the process of loan-noun integration., Modern Greek Dialects and Linguistics Theory, Vol 6, No 1 (2016)

The aim of this study is to investigate which factors influence loan quality in Greece. In this context, it is examined the effect of various accounting and macroeconomics indices to loans loss provisions (LLP) and loans loss reserves (LLR) ratios. The empirical analysis is carried out at both individual bank and banking system level data by using dynamic regression techniques. The findings extend the existing literature and confirm all the examined hypotheses, since macroeconomic environment (unemployment, public debt, economic growth and inflation) and accounting factors (past performance of loan quality, capital adequacy, liquidity and profitability) seem to influence credit risk in Greece. The aim of the present study is to construct a coherent profile of student smokers in Greece, based on their behavioral and demographic characteristics. In this context, we collected data by administrating an anonymous self-completed questionnaire, which was answered by students of University and Technological Educational Institute (T.E.I.) of Patras. The final sample consists of 1,190 student smokers. For the purposes of the present study, principal component analysis was utilized to explore and detect the demographic and behavioral profiles of Greek student smokers. The factor solution identified 5 demographic factors and 14 behavioral factors. All factors were labeled, interpreted and discussed in the light of existing knowledge in order to understand better the consumer behavior of student smokers.

H εργασία πραγματεύεται την γλωσσική αλλαγή, η οποία τροφοδοτείται από την επαφή γλωσσικών συστημάτων στη μορφολογία των ονομάτων των Επτανησιακών διαλέκτων, οι οποίες έχουν επηρεαστεί από δύο Ρωμανικές διαλέκτους, την Ιταλική και τα Βενετσιάνικα. Θα δούμε ότι τα δομικά χαρακτηριστικά της γλώσσας αποδέκτη που είναι η Ελληνική, διαδραματίζουν πρωτεύοντα ρόλο για το τελικό αποτέλεσμα της διαδικασίας του δανεισμού. Επίσης, θα γίνει σαφές ότι η επίγνωση από την πλευρά των ομιλητών της δομής της γλώσσας πηγής (Ρωμανική) είναι εξέχουσας σημασίας για την επιλογή της εκάστοτε στρατηγικής δανεισμού. Το πεδίο της ονοματικής κλίσης είναι ιδιαιτέρως προσοδοφόρο, όπως θα αποδειχθεί, για την εξέταση και τον έλεγχο των μορφολογικών θεωριών που έχουν διαμορφωθεί μέχρι ώρας, καθώς θα διευκολύνουν το έλεγχο και το βαθμό εφαρμογής συγκεκριμένων προσεγγίσεων που έχουν διατυπωθεί μέσα στο θεωρητικό πλαίσιο της γλωσσικής επαφής.

Στη παρούσα μελέτη, αρχικά παρουσιάζονται από θεωρητική πλευρά θέματα που αφορούν το ρυθμιστικό πλαίσιο, τον πιστωτικό κίνδυνο, τα μη εξυπηρετούμενα δάνεια και οι έννοιες Ευρωζώνη και Ευρωσύστημα. Ακολούθως, με τη χρήση ενός οικονομετρικού μοντέλου επιχειρήθηκε ο προσδιορισμός των παραγόντων εκείνων που επηρεάζουν τον δείκτη μη εξυπηρετούμενων δανείων στην Ευρωζώνη. Ο δείκτης των μη εξυπηρετούμενων δανείων ουσιαστικά συνιστάται ως προσεγγιστική μεταβλητή του πιστωτικού κινδύνου και την περίοδο αυτή της παρατεταμένης ύφεσης αποτελεί ενδεχομένως τη μεγαλύτερη απειλή που αντιμετωπίζουν τα διάφορα τραπεζικά συστήματα όλου του κόσμου. Χρησιμοποιώντας συγκεντρωτικά δεδομένα (aggregate data) σε ένα πάνελ 13 χωρών της Ευρωζώνης για την περίοδο 2000-2008 και με την βοήθεια της fixed effect προσέγγισης, εντοπίστηκαν ισχυρές συσχετίσεις μεταξύ του NPL και διαφόρων μακροοικονομικών και τραπεζικών (banκ specific) παραγόντων. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, τα ευρήματα της εμπειρικής διερεύνησης, επιβεβαιώνουν τη διεθνή βιβλιογραφία καθώς από πλευράς τραπεζικών μεταβλητών ισχυρή επίδραση στο δείκτη μη εξυπηρετούμενων δάνειων εμφανίζει ο δείκτης κεφαλαιακής επάρκειας, ο δείκτης δάνεια προς καταθέσεις και ο δείκτης των μη εξυπηρετούμενων της προηγούμενης χρονιάς. Τέλος, από μακροοικονομικής πλευράς το δημόσιο χρέος και η ανεργία φαίνεται να είναι δυο επιπλέον παράγοντες που επιδρούν στη διαμόρφωση του δείκτη, αποτυπώνοντας ότι η κατάσταση της οικονομίας των χωρών της ευρωζώνης συνδέεται άρρηκτα με τον δείκτη NPL. In this study, from the theoretical point of you, issues regarding regulation, credit risk, non-performing loans, Eurozone and Eurosystem are presented. Then, implementing an econometric model it was examined which factors influence the ratio of nonperforming loans in the Eurozone. It is worthwhile to mention that the ratio of NPLs can be used as a proxy of credit risk. Nowadays, credit risk seems to be the greatest risk, which banking systems are facing all over the world. Particularly, Using aggregate data on a panel of 13 countries for the period 2000-2008 and applying the fixed effect approach, strong correlations between the NPL and various macroeconomic and bank specific factors are confirmed. Our findings largely agree with the literature as, in terms of bank-specific variables, the capital ratio, the loans to deposits ratio and the rate of non-performing loans of the previous year appear to exert a powerful influence on the non-performing loans rate. At the same time, from a macroeconomic perspective, the public debt and unemployment seem to be two additional factors that affect the index, revealing that the state of the economy of Eurozone countries is clearly linked to the NPL index.
