Abstract

BackgroundDrinking water is a common source of exposure to inorganic arsenic. In the US, the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was enacted to protect consumers from exposure to contaminants, including arsenic, in public water systems (PWS). The reproductive effects of preconception and prenatal arsenic exposure in regions with low to moderate arsenic concentrations are not well understood.ObjectivesThis study examined associations between preconception and prenatal exposure to arsenic violations in water, measured via residence in a county with an arsenic violation in a regulated PWS during pregnancy, and five birth outcomes: birth weight, gestational age at birth, preterm birth, small for gestational age (SGA), and large for gestational age (LGA).MethodsData for arsenic violations in PWS, defined as concentrations exceeding 10 parts per billion, were obtained from the Safe Drinking Water Information System. Participants of the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Cohort Study were matched to arsenic violations by time and location based on residential history data. Multivariable, mixed effects regression models were used to assess the relationship between preconception and prenatal exposure to arsenic violations in drinking water and birth outcomes.ResultsCompared to unexposed infants, continuous exposure to arsenic from three months prior to conception through birth was associated with 88.8 g higher mean birth weight (95% CI: 8.2, 169.5), after adjusting for individual-level confounders. No statistically significant associations were observed between any preconception or prenatal violations exposure and gestational age at birth, preterm birth, SGA, or LGA.ConclusionsOur study did not identify associations between preconception and prenatal arsenic exposure, defined by drinking water exceedances, and adverse birth outcomes. Exposure to arsenic violations in drinking water was associated with higher birth weight. Future studies would benefit from more precise geodata of water system service areas, direct household drinking water measurements, and exposure biomarkers.

Abstract

Maternal hyperglycemia during pregnancy adversely affects maternal and child outcomes. While mechanisms are not fully understood, maternal circulating miRNAs may play a role. We examined whether continuous glucose levels and hyperglycemia subtypes (gestational diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and glucose intolerance) were associated with circulating miRNAs during late pregnancy. Seven miRNAs (hsa-miR-107, hsa-let-7b-5p, hsa-miR-126-3p, hsa-miR-181a-5p, hsa-miR-374a-5p, hsa-miR-382-5p, and hsa-miR-337-5p) were associated (p < 0.05) with either hyperglycemia or continuous glucose levels prior to multiple testing correction. These miRNAs target genes involved in pathways relevant to maternal and child health, including insulin signaling, placental development, energy balance, and appetite regulation. Abstract

In this study, the production of functional beverages of Zuccagnia punctata Cav. (jarilla), a native medicinal plant from Argentina, and Vaccinium corymbosum (blueberry), with lemon honey as a sweetener, is described. The beverage was formulated by using jarilla extract and blueberry juice with maltodextrin as an encapsulant material. The beverage was dried by both spray-drying and freeze-drying. Both beverages showed high water solubility with adequate features for handling, transport, and storage. The chromatic parameters indicate tones of mauve. Both the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were retained after being spray-dried (92 and 100%, respectively). The anthocyanins were less stable under spray-dried conditions (58% retained). Both beverages showed high scavenger capacity on ABTS•+, HO•, and H2O2 (SC50 between 3.56 and 36.90 µg GAE/mL) and exhibited in vitro inhibitor potential of α-glucosidase, α-amylase, and lipase activities (IC50 of between 2.97 and 27.19 µg GAE/mL). The powdered beverage obtained by spray-drying presented the greatest preference in sensory tests. The beverages were neither toxic nor mutagenic in the concentration range with biological activity. During short-term storage, both beverages showed stability. 28. How Prioritizing Number Skills Can Act as a Mediator for Socioeconomic Inequality within a National Math Compulsory Curriculum

Abstract

Although prior knowledge is an important predictor of future performance in mathematics, few studies have analyzed which areas of the subject are most critical. Most evidence is based on small- and medium-scale studies from developed countries, with results that cannot be generalized. We explore which areas of mathematics are the most important predictors of future performance by considering the sociodemographic and academic factors of Chile. Scores from a standardized test for eighth-grade mathematics and fourth-grade language arts were analyzed for a sample of 158,818 students, together with data on different areas of fourth-grade mathematics. The results reveal that the association of future performance in mathematics with number skills is as strong as the association of future performance in mathematics with attending an elite private school, in comparison to attending a state-subsidized school. Literacy skills also proved to be an important predictor of future performance in mathematics.

Abstract

The subject matter of the Landscape Expression course for students starting the master’s degree in landscape architecture at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona is the dynamic representation of landscape. Its objective is to introduce new students to changing and temporal aspects of the problem of its graphic representation. In our case, few of the students have previous landscape architecture training. Most of them come from disciplines dealing with spatial development or space, such as architecture or engineering. Others come from fields of knowledge related to biology or the environment and are not used to design and the need to graphically communicate that it implies. The course confronts students with the contradiction between landscape – diverse and dynamic – and our flat and static representations.

48. Análisis de competencia de las exportaciones ecuatorianas en Corea del Sur

Abstract

The objective of this research is to determine the potential commercial competition within the South Korean market, identifying the countries and sectors with which the Ecuadorian exportable supply could rival. For this purpose, South Korean trade information was analyzed during the period 2018 and July 2022, identifying the main purchases made by Korea from Ecuador according to the Standard International Trade Classification, Revision 3 (SITC). Then using this information, a similarity and competition analysis was applied for the year 2021, being the Spearman correlation coefficient the technique used to evaluate the degree of similarity with respect to the Ecuadorian exportable supply, and the Export Competition Index (ICX) used to assess the risk of trade displacement. The results show a moderate degree of similarity for Australia, Peru, the Philippines and Mexico, while Colombia shows a weak similarity. On the other hand, the ICX showed potential displacement in the petroleum sector(333) with Mexico, Brazil and Colombia; non-ferrous scrap(288) with Colombia, the Philippines, Thailand and Mexico; and fruits(057) with the Philippines, even surpassing the values reported by Latin American countries such as Colombia, Chile and Peru.

50. Attention and Impulsivity in Children with High Intellectual Ability and Children with ADHD

Abstract

Introduction: Certain behaviors associated with high intellectual ability, such as inattention and early response, are often confused with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), making correct diagnosis more difficult. The objective of the present study was to analyze the performance of students with high intellectual ability and students with ADHD in sustained attention and impulsivity. Method: Participants included a total of 25 children with high intellectual ability and mean age of 6.15 years, and 25 children with ADHD and mean age of 6.96 years. "Conner's Continuous Performance Test II" for Windows (CPT II) was administered to all participants. An ex post facto methodology was followed. The results were analyzed statistically, using SPSS, through a t test for independent samples. Results: Significant differences were found in Omissions, Hit Reaction Time, Reaction Time Standard Error and Hit Reaction Time at Change of Inter-Stimulus Interval Discussion and conclusions: (1) Children with high intellectual ability have significantly better consistency in response speed, better consistency in reaction times at different interstimulus intervals, and make greater errors of commission compared to students with ADHD. (2) Children with high intellectual ability perform significantly faster when answering correctly during the test. Performance tests such as the CPT-II for the measurement of attention and impulsivity represent an alternative assessment, with differential diagnosis between these populations. This process must be carried out by qualified personnel who have experience with both populations.
