In a pot experiment, the effects of the bacterium strain Micrococcus roseus, native soil arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and the fungus Glomus mosseae on the growth, P, N, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cd uptake of maize in a soil polluted with Cd were investigated. A three-factor experiment was set up in a randomized complete design with three replicates of each treatment. The factors in the experiment were as follows: 1) AMF with two levels, G1 (native AMF) and G2 (G. mosseae + G1); 2) bacterium promoting plant growth with two levels, B0 (no inoculation) and B1 (inoculation with M. roseus); and 3) cadmium with three levels (0, 100 and 200 mg Cd kg–1soil). G2 significantly increased root colonization, plant biomass, shoot nutrients and Cd uptake of plants in comparison with G1 in Cd polluted conditions. The single presence of AMF contributed to the stabilization of Cd in roots and soil. Shoot and root dry weights, and shoot nutrients uptake of plants co-inoculated with bacterium and AMF were higher than mycorrhizal plants in the soil polluted with Cd. Plants co-inoculated with bacterium and G2 had higher amount of shoot Cd uptake, root Cd uptake, Cd phytoextraction, translocation, and uptake efficiencies under both Cd concentrations than only mycorrhizal plants.

- Abstract
Introduction: Skin cancer is the most common cancer among occupational cancers which Sunlight is the most important cause. Farmers due to continuous contact with sunlight are at risk for this cancer. Protective behaviors are one of the most important measures in preventing skin cancer. The aim of this study was to determine sun protective behaviors and some of its related factors among Kazeroon farmers. Methods: The cross-sectional study was done on 300 farmers who were selected by cluster sampling from 8 villages in Kazeroon. Data was collected by a researcher-made questionnaire with acceptable reliability and validity. A questionnaire including demographic data as well as questions about measures for farmers' performance about using sun protective behaviors, causes for Lack of this behavior and information source of skin cancer and its prevention methods. These questions were completed by interviews with farmers and were analyzed using SPSS18. Results: In this study, sun-protective behaviors in farmers was higher than average. The most frequent sun protective behavior was "wearing clothes that cover more of the body" while wearing "sunscreen" was reported as the less frequent. The most important reason for not doing sun protective behaviors among farmers was the "expensiveness of protective devices". Results showed a significant relationship between age, sex, education, income, family history of sunburn with protective behaviors (p<0.05).History of sunburn increase possibility of sun-protective behaviors to 2.048 times Conclusions: In this study showing of sun protective behaviors in farmers has been considered moderate. It is notable that behaviors are based on knowledge and attitudes so designing educational programs regarding these findings can promote sun protective behaviors and reduce the risk of skin cancer. - Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the biodegradation behaviour of starch/nanocellulose/black tea extract (SNBTE) films in a 30-day soil burial test. The SNBTE films were prepared by mixing commercial starch, nanocellulose (2, 4, and 6%), and an aqueous solution of black tea extract by a simple mixing and casting process. The chemical and morphological properties of the SNBTE films before and after biodegradation were characterized using the following analytical techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The changes in soil composition, namely pH, electrical conductivity (EC), moisture content, water holding capacity (WHC), soil respiration, total nitrogen, weight mean diameter (MDW), and geometric mean diameter (GMD), as a result of the biodegradation process, were also estimated. The results showed that the films exhibited considerable biodegradability (35-67%) within 30 days while increasing soil nutrients. The addition of black tea extract reduced the biodegradation rate due to its polyphenol content, which likely resulted in a reduction in microbial activity. The addition of nanocellulose (2-6% weight of starch) increased the tensile strength, but decreased the elongation at break of the films. These results suggest that starch nanocellulose and SNBTE films are not only biodegradable under soil conditions but also positively contribute to soil health, highlighting their potential as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic films in the packaging industry., (© 2024. - Abstract
This study aimed to investigate a novel method for the green synthesis of iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) using marigold extract (Calendula officinalis L), kraft pulping black liquor, and nanocellulose. Then, the efficacy of FeNPs as a direct nanofertilizer on the growth parameters of marigold was investigated. Characterization techniques including FESEM, EDX, VSM, and FTIR were used to confirm the successful synthesis of FeNPs. The characterization results confirmed the formation and presence of FeNPs in the 20-100 nm range. FeNPs synthesized with nanocellulose notably enhanced marigold growth parameters compared to other materials. However, all nanoparticle variants, including those from marigold extract and black liquor, improved germination, plant height, root length, and plant dry weight compared to the control. Moreover, treatments exhibited higher available iron and total plant iron levels than the control. Thus, employing 10 mg FeNPs (prepared with 5.0 % nanocellulose) appears optimal for enhancing marigold growth and yield., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of preharvest chitosan-Myrtus communis essential oil composite (1.5 and 3.0 %) and postharvest nanocellulose (0.3 and 0.6 %) on the quality of strawberries. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis led to identification of 32 compounds in the Myrtus communis essential oil. The study showed that using CHS-ES composite coating for foliar application could increase the lifespan of the fruit by up to 24 days. This is because it increases the levels of components, such as phenol content (TPC) total flavonoids content (TFC) vitamin C, firmness and SSC. It also enhances the effectiveness of enzymes such, as glutathione peroxidase (GSH POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO). The use of CHS-ES treatments reduced the weight loss of fruits between 50 and 80 %, which is very important from the commercial point of view and maintaining nutritional properties, marketability and appearance. The microscopic analysis further revealed that using CHS-ES composite + nanocellulose coating produced a more continuous and uniform surface than the control. In general, this method is both safe and environmentally friendly while also proving to be effective, in preserving and enhancing the quality of strawberries., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
The objective of this study was to produce high-performance and biodegradable starch nanocomposites through film casting by using corn starch/nanofibrillated cellulose (CS/NFC) and corn starch/nanofibrillated lignocellulose (CS/NFLC). NFC and NFLC were obtained by super grinding process and added to fibrogenic solutions (1, 3, and 5 g/100 g of starch). The addition of NFC and NFLC from 1 to 5 % was verified to be influential in enhancing mechanical properties (tensile, burst, and tear index) and reducing WVTR, air permeability, and essential properties in food packaging materials. But, in comparison to control samples, the addition of NFC and NFLC from 1 to 5 % decreased the opacity, transparency, and tear index of films. In acidic solutions, produced films were more soluble than in alkaline or water solutions. The soil-biodegradability analysis showed that after 30 days of exposure to soil, the control film lost 79.5 % of its weight. The weight loss of all films was >81 % after 40 days. The results of this study may contribute to expanding the industrial applications of both NFC and NFLC by laying a basis for preparing high-performance CS/NFC or CS/NFLC., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. - Abstract
Morphological changes that may arise through a treatment course are probably one of the most significant sources of range uncertainty in proton therapy. Non-invasive in-vivo treatment monitoring is useful to increase treatment quality. The INSIDE in-beam Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner performs in-vivo range monitoring in proton and carbon therapy treatments at the National Center of Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO). It is currently in a clinical trial (ID: NCT03662373) and has acquired in-beam PET data during the treatment of various patients. In this work we analyze the in-beam PET (IB-PET) data of eight patients treated with proton therapy at CNAO. The goal of the analysis is twofold. First, we assess the level of experimental fluctuations in inter-fractional range differences (sensitivity) of the INSIDE PET system by studying patients without morphological changes. Second, we use the obtained results to see whether we can observe anomalously large range variations in patients where morphological changes have occurred. The sensitivity of the INSIDE IB-PET scanner was quantified as the standard deviation of the range difference distributions observed for six patients that did not show morphological changes. Inter-fractional range variations with respect to a reference distribution were estimated using the Most-Likely-Shift (MLS) method. To establish the efficacy of this method, we made a comparison with the Beam's Eye View (BEV) method. For patients showing no morphological changes in the control CT the average range variation standard deviation was found to be 2.5 mm with the MLS method and 2.3 mm with the BEV method. On the other hand, for patients where some small anatomical changes occurred, we found larger standard deviation values. In these patients we evaluated where anomalous range differences were found and compared them with the CT. We found that the identified regions were mostly in agreement with the morphological changes seen in the CT scan., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest. - Abstract
Background: Performing appropriate and regular screening can effectively reduce cervical cancer and mortality rate, however, the available evidence suggests that women's participation in cervical cancer screening remains low in middle- and low-income countries, and that it is necessary to identify appropriate intervention methods to change behavior. The present study was designed to determine the effect of decision-aid-based counseling on cervical cancer screening behavior among women., Materials and Methods: This trial study was conducted on 154 women with no history of Pap smear during the past 3 years and refers to Tabriz health care centers. The participants were assigned to the intervention (decision aid based counseling) and control (routine health education) groups through randomized block design with block sizes of 4 and 6 and a 1:1 allocation ratio. The data were collected using the sociodemographic and fertility characteristics, stages of change checklist, and shared decision-making (SDM) and decisional conflict (DC) questionnaire before and 6 months after the intervention by interview and then, analyzed by SPSS24 software. The independent t -test, ANCOVA tests were used., Results: A significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of changing the stages of cervical cancer screening behavior 6 months after the intervention. As after the intervention, the frequency of individuals entered the preparation or action stage was more than the control group ( P = 0.001). The mean score of SDM in the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group after intervention ([45.49 ± 1.18] vs. [27.56 ± 1.18] [Mean Difference (MD): 17.92; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 14.59-21.25; P < 0.001]). The mean score of DC in the intervention group was significantly lower than the control group after intervention ([29.16 ± 1.09] vs. [34.14 ± 1.09] [MD: -4.97; 95% CI: 1.09-8.04; P < 0.002])., Conclusions: This study revealed that evidence-based information communicated between clients and clinicians has very important role in clients' health-related behavior. It is recommended, health care providers apply decision-aid-based counseling for promoting the cervical cancer screening behavior among women., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright: © 2022 Journal of Education and Health Promotion.)

- Abstract
Particle therapy in which deep seated tumours are treated using
12 C ions (Carbon Ions RadioTherapy or CIRT) exploits the high conformity in the dose release, the high relative biological effectiveness and low oxygen enhancement ratio of such projectiles. The advantages of CIRT are driving a rapid increase in the number of centres that are trying to implement such technique. To fully profit from the ballistic precision achievable in delivering the dose to the target volume an online range verification system would be needed, but currently missing. The12 C ions beams range could only be monitored by looking at the secondary radiation emitted by the primary beam interaction with the patient tissues and no technical solution capable of the needed precision has been adopted in the clinical centres yet. The detection of charged secondary fragments, mainly protons, emitted by the patient is a promising approach, and is currently being explored in clinical trials at CNAO. Charged particles are easy to detect and can be back-tracked to the emission point with high efficiency in an almost background-free environment. These fragments are the product of projectiles fragmentation, and are hence mainly produced along the beam path inside the patient. This experimental signature can be used to monitor the beam position in the plane orthogonal to its flight direction, providing an online feedback to the beam transverse position monitor chambers used in the clinical centres. This information could be used to cross-check, validate and calibrate, whenever needed, the information provided by the ion chambers already implemented in most clinical centres as beam control detectors. In this paper we study the feasibility of such strategy in the clinical routine, analysing the data collected during the clinical trial performed at the CNAO facility on patients treated using12 C ions and monitored using the Dose Profiler (DP) detector developed within the INSIDE project. On the basis of the data collected monitoring three patients, the technique potential and limitations will be discussed., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2021 Toppi, Baroni, Battistoni, Bisogni, Cerello, Ciocca, De Maria, De Simoni, Donetti, Dong, Embriaco, Ferrero, Fiorina, Fischetti, Franciosini, Kraan, Luongo, Malekzadeh, Magi, Mancini-Terracciano, Marafini, Mattei, Mazzoni, Mirabelli, Mirandola, Morrocchi, Muraro, Patera, Pennazio, Schiavi, Sciubba, Solfaroli-Camillocci, Sportelli, Tampellini, Traini, Valle, Vischioni, Vitolo and Sarti.)- Published

- Abstract
Thermoresponsive polymers (TRP)s have been widely used for various applications from controlling membrane fouling in separation to cell/cell sheet harvesting in regenerative medicine. While poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAAm) is the most commonly used TRP, less expensive and easily processed poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) also shows a hydrophilic to hydrophobic transition at 32-35 °C, near physiological conditions. In this study, we investigated the processing conditions for retaining a stable layer of PVME thin film on silica surfaces via entrapment in a 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) network. In addition, the thermoresponsive behaviors (TRB) of the retained PVME films were evaluated. Blend thin films of PVME/APTES with 90:10 and 50:50 mass ratios were spin-coated from their solutions in ethanol under ambient conditions and then annealed in a vacuum oven at 40, 60, 80, or 120 °C for 1, 2, or 3 days. The annealed films were then thoroughly rinsed with room temperature water and then soaked in water for 3 days. Our results showed that annealing at a temperature of ≥40 °C was necessary for retaining a PVME film on the surface. The higher annealing temperature led to greater film retention, probably due to the formation of a tighter APTES network. Regardless of processing conditions, all retained PVME films showed TRB, determined by water contact angles below and above the transition temperature of PVME. Additionally, particle attachment and protein adsorption on retained PVME films showed lower attachment or adsorption at room temperature as compared to that at 37 °C, and a greater difference was observed for the 90:10 blend where more PVME was consisted. Furthermore, human mesenchymal stem cells attached and proliferated on the retained PVME surfaces at 37 °C and rapidly detached at room temperature. These results illustrated the potential applications of PVME surfaces as thermoresponsive supports for low-fouling applications and noninvasive cell harvesting.

- Abstract
Nerve injuries requiring surgery are a significant problem without good clinical alternatives to the autograft. Tissue engineering strategies are critically needed to provide an alternative. In this study, we utilized aligned nanofibers that were click-modified with the bioactive peptide RGD for rat sciatic nerve repair. Empty conduits or conduits filled with either non-functionalized aligned nanofibers or RGD-functionalized aligned nanofibers were used to repair a 13 mm gap in the rat sciatic nerve of animals for six weeks. The aligned nanofibers encouraged cell infiltration and nerve repair as shown by histological analysis. RGD-functionalized nanofibers reduced muscle atrophy. During the six weeks of recovery, the animals were subjected to motor and sensory tests. Sensory recovery was improved in the RGD-functionalized nanofiber group by week 4, while other groups needed six weeks to show improvement after injury. Thus, the use of functionalized nanofibers provides cues that aid in in vivo nerve repair and should be considered as a future repair strategy.

- Abstract
Glomalin is a specific fungal glycoprotein produced by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi belonging to the Glomerales which could efficiently sequestrate heavy metals. The glomalin has been introduced as a heat shock protein and there are evidences that increasing levels of heavy metals could enhance its production. We examined the influence of Cd concentrations on glomalin production by AM fungus, as well as its contribution to the sequestration of Cd in both pot and in vitro culture conditions. Pot experiment was carried out using pure sand with Trifolium repens L. as host plant, mycorrhized by Rhizophagus irregularis and treated with Cd levels of 0, 15, 30, and 45 μM. In vitro experiment was performed in two-compartment plates containing the transformed carrot roots mycorrhized with the same fungus and treated with Cd levels of 0, 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1 mM. The immunoreactive and Bradford reactive glomalin contents in both experiments increased as so raising Cd concentration. Total Cd sequestrated by hyphal glomalin in both cultures was significantly increased as the levels of Cd increased. The highest contents of Cd sequestration in pot (75.78 μg Cd/mg glomalin) and in vitro (11.44 μg Cd/mg glomalin) cultures were recorded at the uppermost levels of Cd, which significantly differed with other levels. Our results suggested that under Cd-induced stress, stimulated production of glomalin by AM fungus may be a protective mechanism against the toxic effect of Cd.
