In this paper, we study a routing and travel-mode choice problem for mobility systems with a multimodal transportation network as a "mobility game" with coupled action sets. We formulate an atomic routing game to focus on the travelers' preferences and study the impact on the efficiency of the travelers' behavioral decision-making under rationality and prospect theory. To control the innate inefficiencies, we introduce a mobility "pricing mechanism," in which we model traffic congestion using linear cost functions while also considering the waiting times at different transport hubs. We show that the travelers' selfish actions lead to a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium. We then perform a Price of Anarchy and Price of Stability analysis to establish that the mobility system's inefficiencies remain relatively low and the social welfare at a NE remains close to the social optimum as the number of travelers increases. We deviate from the standard game-theoretic analysis of decision-making by extending our mobility game to capture the subjective behavior of travelers using prospect theory. As we move to increasingly complex cyber–physical systems (CPS), new approaches are needed to plan efficient state trajectories in real-time. In this paper, we propose an approach to significantly reduce the complexity of solving optimal control problems for a class of CPS with nonlinear dynamics. We exploit the property of differential flatness to simplify the Euler–Lagrange equations that arise during optimization, and this simplification eliminates the numerical instabilities that plague optimal control in general. We also present an explicit differential equation that describes the evolution of the optimal state trajectory, and we extend our results to consider both the unconstrained and constrained cases. Furthermore, we demonstrate the performance of our approach by generating the optimal trajectory for a planar manipulator with two revolute joints. We show in simulation that our approach is able to generate the constrained optimal trajectory in 4. 5 ms while respecting workspace constraints and switching between a 'left' and 'right' bend in the elbow joint. The decentralized aggregate motion of many individual robots is known as robotic flocking. The study of robotic flocking has received considerable attention in the past twenty years. As we begin to deploy flocking control algorithms on physical multi-agent and swarm systems, there is an increasing necessity for rigorous promises on safety and performance. In this paper, we present an overview the literature focusing on optimization approaches to achieve flocking behavior that provide strong safety guarantees. We separate the literature into cluster and line flocking, and categorize cluster flocking with respect to the system-level objective, which may be realized by a reactive or planning control algorithm. We also categorize the line flocking literature by the energy-saving mechanism that is exploited by the agents. We present several approaches aimed at minimizing the communication and computational requirements in real systems via neighbor filtering and event-driven planning, and conclude with our perspective on the outlook and future research direction of optimal flocking as a field. Most cyber–physical systems (CPS) encounter a large volume of data which is added to the system gradually in real time and not altogether in advance. In this paper, we provide a theoretical framework that yields optimal control strategies for such CPS at the intersection of control theory and learning. In the proposed framework, we use the actual CPS, i.e., the "true" system that we seek to optimally control online, in parallel with a model of the CPS that is available. We then institute an information state for the system which does not depend on the control strategy. An important consequence of this independence is that for any given choice of a control strategy and a realization of the system's variables until time t , the information states at future times do not depend on the choice of the control strategy at time t but only on the realization of the decision at time t , and thus they are related to the concept of separation between estimation of the state and control. Namely, the future information states are separated from the choice of the current control strategy. Such control strategies are called separated control strategies. Hence, we can derive offline the optimal control strategy of the system with respect to the information state, which might not be precisely known due to model uncertainties or complexity of the system, and then use standard learning approaches to learn the information state online while data are added gradually to the system in real time. We show that after the information state becomes known, the separated control strategy of the CPS model derived offline is optimal for the actual system. We address the problem of optimally controlling connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) crossing an urban intersection without any explicit traffic signaling, so as to minimize energy consumption subject to a throughput maximization requirement. We show that the solution of the throughput maximization problem depends only on the hard safety constraints imposed on CAVs and its structure enables a decentralized optimal control problem formulation for energy minimization. We present a complete analytical solution of these decentralized problems and derive conditions under which feasible solutions satisfying all safety constraints always exist. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is illustrated through simulation which shows substantial dual benefits of the proposed decentralized framework by allowing CAVs to conserve momentum and fuel while also improving travel time. Widespread use of alternative hybrid powertrains currently appears inevitable and many opportunities for substantial progress remain. The necessity for environmentally friendly vehicles, in conjunction with increasing concerns regarding U.S. dependency on foreign oil and climate change, has led to significant investment in enhancing the propulsion portfolio with new technologies. Recently, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have attracted considerable attention due to their potential to reduce petroleum consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transportation sector. PHEVs are especially appealing for short daily commutes with excessive stop-and-go driving. However, the high costs associated with their components, and in particular, with their energy storage systems have been significant barriers to extensive market penetration of PHEVs. In the research reported here, we investigated the implications of motor/generator and battery size on fuel economy and GHG emissions in a medium duty PHEV. An optimization framework is proposed and applied to two different parallel powertrain configurations, pretransmission and post transmission, to derive the Pareto frontier with respect to motor/generator and battery size. The optimization and modeling approach adopted here facilitates better understanding of the potential benefits from proper selection of motor/generator and battery size on fuel economy and GHG emissions. This understanding can help us identify the appropriate sizing of these components and thus reducing the PHEV cost. Compression ignition engine technologies have been advanced in the past decade to provide superior fuel economy and high performance. These technologies offer increased opportunities for optimizing engine calibration. Current engine calibration methods rely on deriving static tabular relationships between a set of steady-state operating points and the corresponding values of the controllable variables. While the engine is running, these values are being interpolated for each engine operating point to coordinate optimal performance criteria, e.g., fuel economy, emissions, and acceleration. These methods, however are not efficient in capturing transient engine operation designated by common driving habits, e.g., stop-and-go driving, rapid acceleration, and braking. An alternative approach was developed recently, which makes the engine an autonomous intelligent system, namely, one capable of learning its optimal calibration for both steady-state and transient operating points in real time. Through this approach, while the engine is running the vehicle, it progressively perceives the driver's driving style and eventually learns to operate in a manner that optimizes specified performance criteria. The major challenge to this approach is problem dimensionalizy when more than one controllable variable is considered. In this paper we address this problem by proposing a decentralized learning control scheme. The scheme is evaluated through simulation of a diesel engine model, which learns the values of injection timing and variable geometry turbocharging vane position that optimize fuel economy and pollutant emissions over a segment of the FTP-75 driving cycle. Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) provide the most intriguing opportunity to improve energy efficiency, traffic flow, and safety. In earlier work, we addressed the constrained optimal coordination problem of CAVs at different traffic scenarios using Hamiltonian analysis. In this paper, we investigate the properties of the unconstrained problem and provide conditions under which different combination of the state and control constraints become active. We present a condition-based computational framework that improves on the standard iterative solution procedure of the constrained Hamiltonian analysis. Finally, we derive a closed-form analytical solution of the constrained optimal control problem and validate the proposed framework using numerical simulation. In this paper, we provide a decentralized theoretical framework for coordination of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) at different traffic scenarios. The framework includes: (1) an upper-level optimization that yields for each CAV its optimal time trajectory and lane to pass through a given traffic scenario while alleviating congestion; and (2) a low-level optimization that yields for each CAV its optimal control input (acceleration/deceleration). We provide a complete, analytical solution of the low-level optimization problem that includes the rear-end, speed-dependent safety constraint. Furthermore, we provide a problem formulation for the upper-level optimization in which there is no duality gap. The latter implies that the optimal time trajectory for each CAV does not activate any of the state, control, and safety constraints of the low-level optimization, thus allowing for online implementation. Finally, we present a geometric duality framework with hyperplanes to derive the condition under which the optimal solution of the upper-level optimization always exists. Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) provide the most intriguing opportunity to optimize energy consumption and travel time. Several approaches have been proposed in the literature that allow CAVs to coordinate in situations where there is a potential conflict, for example, in signalized intersections, merging at roadways and roundabouts, to reduce energy consumption and optimize traffic flow. In this paper, we consider the problem of coordinating CAVs in a corridor consisting of multiple traffic scenarios. We formulate a two-level optimization problem in which we maximize traffic throughput in the upper-level problem, and derive a closed-form analytical solution that yields the optimal control input for each CAV, in terms of fuel consumption, in the low-level problem. We validate the effectiveness of the solution through simulation under 100% CAV penetration rate. In this paper, we present an approach for solving the problem of moving N homogeneous agents into M ≥ N goal locations along energy-minimizing trajectories. We propose a decentralized framework that only requires knowledge of the goal locations and partial observations of the global state by each agent. The framework includes guarantees on safety through dynamic constraints, and a method to impose a dynamic, global priority ordering on the agents. A solution to the goal assignment and trajectory generation problems is derived in the form of a binary program and a nonlinear system of equations. Then, we present the conditions for optimality and characterize the conditions under which our algorithm is guaranteed to converge to a unique assignment of agents to goals. We also solve the fully constrained decentralized trajectory generation problem considering the state, control, and safety constraints. Platoon formation with connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in a mixed traffic environment poses significant challenges due to the presence of human-driven vehicles (HDVs) with unknown dynamics and control actions. In this paper, we develop a safety-prioritized receding horizon control framework for creating platoons of HDVs preceded by a CAV Our framework ensures indirect control of the following HDVs by directly controlling the leading CAV given the safety constraints. The framework utilizes a data-driven prediction model that is based on the recursive least squares algorithm and the constant time headway relative velocity car-following model to predict future trajectories of human-driven vehicles. Residential buildings are currently equipped with energy production facilities, e.g., solar rooftops and batteries, which in conjunction with smart meters, can function as smart energy hubs coordinating the loads and the resources in an optimal manner. This paper presents a mathematical model for the optimal energy management of a residential building and proposes a centralized energy management system (CEMS) framework for off-grid operation. The model of each component of the hub is integrated within the CEMS. The optimal decisions are determined in real-time by considering these models with realistic parameter settings and customer preferences. Model predictive control (MPC) is used to adapt the optimal decisions on a receding horizon to account for the deviations in the system inputs. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed CEMS framework. Results show that the proposed CEMS can reduce the energy cost and energy consumption of the customers by approximately 17% and 8%, respectively, over a day. Advanced internal combustion engine technologies have afforded an increase in the number of controllable variables and the ability to optimize engine operation. Values for these variables are determined during engine calibration by means of a tabular static correlation between the controllable variables and the corresponding steady-state engine operating points to achieve desirable engine performance, for example, in fuel economy, pollutant emissions, and engine acceleration. In engine use, table values are interpolated to match actual operating points. State-of-the-art calibration methods cannot guarantee continuously the optimal engine operation for the entire operating domain, especially in transient cases encountered in the driving styles of different drivers. This article presents brief theory and algorithmic implementation that make the engine an autonomous intelligent system capable of learning the required values of controllable variables in real time while operating a vehicle. The engine controller progressively perceives the driver's driving style and eventually learns to operate in a manner that optimizes specified performance criteria. Modeling dynamic systems incurring stochastic disturbances for deriving a control policy is a ubiquitous task in engineering. However, in some instances obtaining a model of a system may be impractical or impossible. Alternative approaches have been developed using a simulation-based stochastic framework, in which the system interacts with its environment in real time and obtains information that can be processed to produce an optimal control policy. In this context, the problem of developing a policy for controlling the system's behavior is formulated as a sequential decision-making problem under uncertainty. This paper considers the problem of deriving a control policy for a dynamic system with unknown dynamics in real time, formulated as a sequential decision-making under uncertainty. The evolution of the system is modeled as a controlled Markov chain. A new state-space representation model and a learning mechanism are proposed that can be used to improve system performance over time. The major difference between the existing methods and the proposed learning model is that the latter utilizes an evaluation function, which considers the expected cost that can be achieved by state transitions forward in time. The model allows decision-making based on gradually enhanced knowledge of system response as it transitions from one state to another, in conjunction with actions taken at each state.
