17. Design and study of a novel thermoelectric tool cooling system for turning applications

Abstract

Tool cooling is an essential process in machining which is usually carried out using cutting fluids with different application strategies. Thermoelectric effect can be considered as the confined manipulation of organic principles such as the conversion of heat energy to electrical energy and vice-versa in various configurations, depending on the entity applied. The stream of manufacturing is fastly moving towards sustainability, stressing the requirement of an innovative cooling system that would not provoke undesirable consequences while being disposed of. The attempts of rectifying this chronic issue in manufacturing has produced apparently feasible solutions such as Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) and Cold-air cooling (CAC) that have produced surface characteristics in workpieces similar to those while using conventional tool cooling techniques. The current work is based on the experimental investigation of the performance of a newly designed compact thermoelectric cooling system in improving the machinability of a superalloy specimen under different machining conditions.

Abstract

In the present study, 2% B 4 C reinforced with Ti–6Al–4V composite coatings on AISI 1040 steel plates were coated using magnetron sputtering. The microstructure and surface morphologies of the coated specimen were analyzed using SEM, XRD, EDS and AFM. The uniform coating thickness of 75 nm and 110 nm on smooth surfaces have been obtained for 0.5 h and 1 h coating time respectively. Under the normal load of 2 N and 3 N, Ti–Al–V–B 4 C coatings wear analysis were performed and resulted in excellent wear rate with lower coefficient of friction. Ti–Al–V–B 4 C thin film shows the nano hardness value of 7.2 GPa and 9.7 GPa for 0.5 h and 1 h coating time and elastic modulus of 204 GPa. The surface roughness ( R a ) of 0.5 h and 1 h coating are 3.393 nm and 17.433 nm respectively. The addition of B 4 C particles reinforced Ti–Al–V composite coatings showed enhanced nano hardness and improved the wear resistance with decrease in the coefficient of friction. The amount of heat generated during wear test has been calculated. Ti–Al–V–B 4 C composite coatings were exposed to lowest wear rates among all loading conditions and thus signifying that it could be a promising alternative to other hard coatings.

24. Adhesion Behaviour, Nanohardness and Surface Roughness of Ti-6Al-4V-6B4C Thin Films Grown on AISI 1040 Steel.

Abstract

The nanohardness of Ti-6Al-4V-6B4C thin film coated AISI 1040 steel were investigated using nanoindentation based on an AFM measurement technique. Thin films of Ti-6Al-4V-6B4C were grown by the magnetron sputtering deposition method. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the deposited thin films were highly purified. The nanohardness of 18, 14 and 11.3 GPa were obtained for the coating of Ti-6Al-4V-6B4C, Ti-6Al-4V, and bare substrate respectively. The surface roughness (Ra) of 0.5 and 1 h coating were 3.39 and 15.74 nm respectively. The results showed that the B4C particles had a significant effect on the microstructural and mechanical properties of the coatings. The Ti-6Al-4V-6B4C coating was obtained for a coating thickness of 40 and 100 nm for 0.5 and 1 h coating time respectively. In the meantime, the respective coating thickness of Ti-6Al-4V was obtained as 30 and 80 nm for 0.5 and 1 h coating time respectively. Strong adhesion was observed between the Ti-6Al-4V-6B4C coating and AISI 1040 steel substrate than Ti-6Al-4V samples. The adhesion mechanism between the Ti-6Al-4V-6B4C coating, AISI 1040 steel substrate, and the interfacial structure were studied by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The use of Ti-6Al-4V-6B4C coating could be a novel technique for developing high-performance applications due to excellent adhesion and nanohardness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
