This document is the first version of the DICE data management plan. It provides information on the type of data being produced by the project, their sources and how the consortium will act to support the FAIR principles during and after the lifetime of the project. The current data management plan is to be considered a living document that will be enriched during the project with a final version to be released at M18.

On October 1, 2011 the EUDAT project was launched to target a pan-European solution to the challenge of data prolif- eration in Europe's scientific and research communities. Aiming to contribute to the production of a Collaborative Data Infrastructure driven by researchers' needs, the project is coordinated by CSC - IT Center for Science, Finland, and co-funded by the European Commission's Framework Programme 7. EUDAT aims at providing Europe's scientific and research communities with a sustainable pan-European infrastructure for improved access to scientific data. Burgeoning volumes of valuable and complex data - newly available from powerful new scientific instruments, simulations and digitization of library resources - represents a fantastic opportunity for science, but has created new challenges related to data manage- ment, access and preservation. The EUDAT consortium comprises 25 European partners, including data centers, technology providers, research communities and funding agencies from 13 countries, who will work together to deliver a Collaborative Data Infrastruc- ture that can sustainably meet future researchers' needs.

When the foundations of UNICORE were laid in the late 90’s of the 20th century the "ancestors" intended to create a uniform interface to computing resources for a (small) number of computing centres. Today - in the era of eSciences and large distributed eInfrastructures - UNICORE has become one of the most innovative and major middlewares in Grid Computing serving users around the world. The UNICORE Summit is a unique event for users, developers, researchers, administrators and service providers to meet. They hear the latest news, share their experiences, present recent and intended developments, get new ideas for projects, find partners and discuss the future of UNICORE. The Summit has been held every year since it started in 2005. The 2011 Summit took place in Torun on July 7 and 8. Torun is an ancient city in Northern Poland picturesquely located on the Vistula river. At about the same time when UNICORE was founded the medieval part of Torun was designated a World heritage by the UNESCO. The event was opened with an invited talk by Abdulrahman Azab from the University of Stavanger on the usage of R and UNICORE for medical research. In the following, 16 technical contributions gave more insights to various development and usage aspects. Additionally, posters were presented by the authors in a poster session on Friday. In the second invited talk Piotr Bala from Warsaw reported on the usage of UNICORE in the polish national Grid initiative PL-Grid. A unique feature of the Summit were the lively plenary discussions. The topics focused on the future ways UNICORE should go, with subjects like "UNICORE and Clouds" or "UNICORE and Portals". We would like to thank all contributors for their presentations and papers as well as the organisers of the UNICORE Summit 2011 in Torun for their excellent work. One of the major obstacles to using commercial applications in Distributed Computing Infrastructures like Grids or Clouds is the current technology that relies on controlling the use of these applications with software licenses. "Software licensing practices are limiting the acceleration of grid adoption" was one of the results of a survey of the 451group in 2005. Just recently the 451group published a similar report on obstacles to the broad adoption of Cloud Computing - and again licensing practices were listed among the top five obstacles. elasticLM overcomes the limitations of existing licensing technologies allowing seamless running of license protected applications in computing environments ranging from local infrastructures to external Grids and Clouds.

In the last couple of years, many e-Science infrastructures have begun to offer production services to e- Scientists with an increasing number of applications that require access to different kinds of computational resources. Within Europe two rather different multi-national e-Science infrastructures evolved over time namely Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications (DEISA) and Enabling Grids for E-SciencE (EGEE). DEISA provides access to massively parallel systems such as supercomputers that are well suited for scientific applications that require many interactions between their typically high numbers of CPUs. EGEE on the other hand provides access to a world-wide Grid of university clusters and PC pools that are well suited for farming applications that require less or even no interactions between the distributed CPUs. While DEISA uses the HPC-driven Grid technology UNICORE, EGEE is based on the gLite Grid middleware optimized for farming jobs. Both have less adoption of open standards and therefore both systems are technically non-interoperable, which means that no e-Scientist can easily leverage the DEISA and EGEE infrastructure with one suitable client environment for scientific applications. This paper argues that future interoperability of such large e-Science infrastructures is required to improve e-Science in general and to increase the real scientific impact of world-wide Grids in particular. We discuss the interoperability achieved by the OMII-Europe project that fundamentally improved the interoperability between UNICORE and gLite by using open standards. We also outline one specific scientific scenario of the WISDOM initiative that actually benefits from the recently established interoperability.
