Eighteen (18) species of hover flies (Insecta:Diptera:Syrphidae) under 14 genera and 2 subfamilies has been reported from the Cold dry zone of Himachal Pradesh which includes Kinnaur, Lahul & Spiti and Pangi range of Chamba districs. 4 species namely Chrysotoxum violaceum Brunetti, 1923, Sphiximorpha triangulifera (Brunetti, 1913),Mallota (Mallota) orientalis (Wiedemann, 1824), Mallota (Mallota) varicolor(Walker, 1856) has been reported from the first time from this cold and dry zone zone as well as from the state of Himachal Pradesh. Their taxonomic keys and detail diagnosis of the reported species has been discussed along with the distributional pattern of these species along the cold dry zone of Himachal Pradesh.

In Korean Peninsula, a total of 175 syrphid species are currently known. As a result of ongoing systematic study of the family Syrphidae, we have discovered the following five species for the first time in the Korean Peninsula: Mallota rossica Portschinsky, 1877, M. shatalkini Mutin, 1999, Sphiximorpha rachmaninovi (Violovitsh, 1981), Volucella bivitta Huo et al., 2007, and V. inanoides Herve-Bazin, 1923. Among these taxa, Sphiximorpha Rondani, 1850, is the genus recorded for the first time in Korea. In total, three subfamilies, 16 tribes, 70 genera, and 180 species are now officially recognized for the Korean syrphid fauna. In order to facilitate their identification, we here provide specific diagnoses and color photographs for the species listed.

A checklist of the Syrphidae (Diptera) recorded from Finland. Three species of Syrphidae, Platycheirus modestus Ide, 1926, Cheilosia barovskii (Stackelberg, 1930) and Mallota tricolor Loew, 1871, are published as new to the Finnish fauna. Platycheirus modestus is also new to the Palaearctic.

A new species of the flower fly [Diptera: Syrphidae] genus Mallota is described from Oriental China [Zhejiang] and two new synonyms are noted.

Many hoverfly species of faunal and zoogeographical interest are found in Serbia's northern province of Vojvodina due to the diversity of its biotopes. In this paper, the presence of 252 species of hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) from 69 genera is documented. Five species are here recorded for the first time in Serbia: Anasimyia contracta Claussen & Torp Pedersen, 1980; Anasimyia transfuga (Linnaeus, 1758); Eristalinus megacephalus (Rossi, 1794); Helophilus hybridus Loew, 1846; and Mallota fuciformis (Fabricius, 1794). One species is recorded for the first time in Vojvodina: Cheilosia brunnipennis (Becker, 1894). The records of 12 species from Vojvodina Province are the only ones on the Balkan Peninsula, while the records of 15 species are the only ones in Serbia.

Perennial grasses commonly known as ‘spinifex’ (Triodia R.Br.) are iconic Australian plants, predominantly found in the arid interior of the continent. In some areas, such as the economically important Pilbara region of Western Australia, current species taxonomy does not account for observed diversity. Previous morphological and molecular studies of Triodia basedowii E.Pritz. and related species have revealed multiple unnamed lineages requiring taxonomic recognition. Here, we describe and name eight new species of Triodia, including T. birriliburu B.M.Anderson, T. chichesterensis B.M.Anderson, T. glabra B.M.Anderson & M.D.Barrett, T. infesta B.M.Anderson & M.D.Barrett, T. mallota B.M.Anderson & M.D.Barrett, T. nana B.M.Anderson, T. scintillans B.M.Anderson & M.D.Barrett, and T. vanleeuwenii B.M.Anderson & M.D.Barrett. We also provide recircumscriptions and revised descriptions for T. basedowii, T. lanigera Domin, T. concinna N.T.Burb. and T. plurinervata N.T.Burb. A key to species and photographs are included.

This paper deals with two new species of the genus Mallota Meigen from China. The descriptions of the external morphological characters and figures of the male genitalia are given. All type specimens are deposited in the South China Agricultural University.

The puparial stage is described for each of four saproxylic hoverflies (Diptera, Syrphidae): Ferdinandea fumipennis Kassebeer, 1999, Mallota dusmeti Andreu, 1926, Myolepta difformis Strobl, 1909, and Myolepta obscura Becher, 1882. Early stages were collected at Cabaneros National Park in Ciudad Real province, central Spain. Mallota dusmeti, M. difformis, and M. obscura were found in water‐filled holes of live Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl. trees and the larva of F. fumipennis was found in a sap run on a live Quercus pyrenaica Wild. tree. Larvae were identified by rearing them to the adult stage. Puparia of these species possessed generic‐level characters found in congenerics. Apparent species‐level characters separating them from early stages of congenerics are proposed. The records reported here are the first for the Iberian Peninsula of M. obscura. Mallota dusmeti, M. difformis, and Myolepta obscura are extremely rare in Europe with M. dusmeti classed as “vulnerable” in the Spanish Invertebrate Red Data Book.

The Australian bee fly genus Comptosia is revised. Alyosia Rondani, Epidosia Hull, Opsonia Hull, Paradosia Hull and Anthocolon Hull are synonymised with Comptosia Macquart. There are 138 species of Comptosia in collections, of which 58 are treated here. The genus is divided into 19 species-groups that encompass the range of variation found in the described and undescribed species. Characters found most useful in forming the species-groups include: distance between the eyes of males, integumental colour, shape of the antenna1 flagellum, form of the labium and subcranial cavity, and shape of the loop in wing vein R2+3;. Keys to species-groups and to species in each group are provided. All, or almost all, of the species in eight of the species-groups are described. In the remaining species-groups, described species are redescribed, or a single representative species described. The number of recognised, but undescribed, species is given for each species-group. Seven new synonymies are proposed at species level: fenestrata Hull = gemina Hardy; aurifrons Macquart and edwardsi Hardy = praeargentata (Macleay); sobricula (Walker) and anthracina (Thomson) = prosimplex (Hardy); fasciafa (Fabricius) = stria (Walker); duofasciata Hull = tendens (Walker). Lectotypes are designated for the following: C. fascipennis Macquart, C. albofasciata (Thomson), C. tendens (Walker), C. duofasciata Hull, C. fenestrata Hull, C. rnaculipennis Macquart, Anthrax inclusa (Walker) and C. casimira Hull. Twenty-six species are redescribed and 32 species (C. paucispina, C. tutela, C. pitereka, C. pilosa, C. caesariata, C. capillata, C. magna, C. speciosa, C. heliophila, C. neosobria, C. kuranda, C. flava, C. sandaraca, C. xanthobasis, C. aurescens, C. paramonovi, C. nitella, C. flexuosa, C. flavipenna, C. insula, C. neobiguttata, C. mackerrasi, C. soror, C. neoapicalis, C. zona, C. thyris, C. calignea, C. lactea, C. mallota, C. scitula, C. acantha and C. microrhynchus) are described as new. Pupal exuviae of five species are described and illustrated.

Fourteen species of Pseudocyphellaria having tomentose or pubescent lobe margins and scabrid-areolate, or ±tomentose upper surfaces occur in southern South America (including Juan Fernandez, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia) south of latitude 34°S. A key and details of the anatomy, chemistry, distribution, morphology and nomenclature of each species are given. Two main groupings are represented in this study: (1) taxa with a ±scabrid-areolate or pubescent upper surface, having sessile, laminal apothecia with a well-developed excipulum proprium (lacking photobiont cells) and containing colourless, acicularfusiform spores (P. compar, P. endochrysa, P. scabrosa and P. vaccind); (2) taxa with a ±tomentose upper surface, having mainly marginal, pedicellate apothecia, with a prominent excipulum thallinum (containing photobiont cells) and with yellowbrown to brown, ellipsoid spores (P. dubia, P. guillemini, P. hirsuta, P. mallota, P. obvoluta, P. pilosella, P. santessonii and P. subrubelld). Pseudocyphellaria piloselloides and P. pluvialis are not known fertile. Pseudocyphellaria pluvialis R. Sant., P. santessonii D. Galloway and P. scabrosa R. Sant., are newly described and a new combination, P. guillemini (Mont.) D. Galloway, is proposed.
