Aim: We investigated the dose--response relationship between acute physical activity (PA) intensity during physical education (PE) lessons (dose), and task behaviour and learning experiences in the classroom after PE (response), and mediation effects of acute PA on-task behaviour via learning experiences. Method: A total of 78 children (M[subscript age] = 9.30 years; 43 females) took part. Participants reported learning experiences (tiredness, positive and negative affect) during one afternoon per week for 6 weeks. Their task behaviour was observed (on-task, active off-task and passive off-task) during two classroom lessons. Between the classroom lessons, they took part in a PE lesson, with experimentally induced PA intensity (low, medium and high). Accelerometers were worn for 24 h leading up to and during every intervention afternoon. Participants completed self-reports three times per classroom lesson, both before and after PE. Intra- and interindividual differences in PA, task behaviour and learning experiences were analysed with multilevel structural equation models. Results: Moderate PA directly increased on-task behaviour and reduced passive off-task behaviour, whereas light PA increased active off-task behaviour and reduced on-task behaviour. We found no direct effects of vigorous PA or mediated effects of any PA intensity on-task-related behaviour. However, a greater positive affect during PE indirectly led to more on-task and less passive off-task behaviour. Regularly active children reported less tiredness in the classroom. Conclusion: PE lessons can increase on-task behaviour and reduce both passive and active off-task behaviours. Positive affect and tiredness are indirectly involved in the impact of PA on task-related behaviour. The greatest benefits were found for moderate PA and for PE lessons, which left children feeling positive. Moreover, regular participation in moderate-to-vigorous PA leads children to feel less tired during school lessons.

Background: Help-seeking research has traditionally inferred behavioural responses to the need for help from post-hoc reflections and experiments outside of the classroom context. Aim: We aimed to gain an ecologically valid understanding of the help-seeking process by examining the association between pupils' task-specific perceptions and their help-seeking interactions with teachers and peers during lessons. Sample: Participants were 290 pupils in Years 4-6 (aged 8.22-11.48) and 12 teachers in 12 classrooms in three schools across two local authorities in South East England, UK. Method: The microlongitudinal data consisted of 6,592 task-specific reports. Pupils reported on their task understanding and need for help and their help-seeking (teacher and peer) and help-giving behaviours at the end of each lesson. On average, pupils completed 25.44 reports across 14.64 lessons, 13 school subjects and 4.80 days. Teachers reported on pupils' academic performance. Data were analysed using two-level logistic and multinomial logistic regressions. Results and conclusions: Task-specific understanding and need for help were associated with help-seeking and help-giving behaviour during lessons. Understanding was associated also with the type of help sought and given among classmates and appeared to influence whether pupils were help-seekers or help-givers during peer interactions. There was an apparent reciprocity in peer help-seeking interactions, occurring namely among girls and higher performers. Overall, girls were more likely than boys to seek and give help across tasks. Pupils for whom English was an additional language were less likely than classmates to seek help when they needed it. The study (1) sheds new light on the dynamics of everyday help-seeking interactions in the classroom, (2) provides a conceptual framework for researchers interested in reciprocal processes of social interaction in self-regulated learning, and (3) highlights groups who might benefit from intervention.

When classroom observations are increasingly used for accountability and evaluation purposes, a deeper understanding of the psychometric properties of such measurement tools is needed. The present study took a unique approach to examine the psychometric properties of a commonly used classroom observation measure by testing the reliability of indicators for higher-order constructs (i.e. dimensions). We investigated the reliability of indicator ratings of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) Pre-K instrument in Finnish kindergarten and first grade classrooms. Twenty-one observer pairs rated 838 segments identified from the 413 lessons of 48 teachers. Variance components models were specified to investigate variance proportions of each indicator and dimension. The results showed that most observer disagreement was found for the instructional support domain. Observers disagreed relatively more depending on the teacher they observed. There is a clear need for additional understanding on how observers process information on the complex elements of classroom interaction in order to improve training programmes and the reliability and accuracy of the assessment procedure.

Research has shown that teachers' autonomy support and provision of structure relate to students' agentic and behavioral engagement. Moreover, agentic engagement elicits higher teacher autonomy support. In the present 5-week diary study, we investigated the dynamic nature of this interplay between teachers and students through their cross-assessment of students' agentic and behavioral engagement. We also considered the week-to-week student-reported teacher autonomy support and provision of structure as well as two student personal characteristics -- proactive personality and situational autonomous versus controlled motivation. Two hundred fifty-seven Turkish middle school students and their teachers from 13 classes participated in the study. Multilevel analyses showed that students' week-to-week perceived autonomy support and initial level of autonomous motivation positively predicted week-to-week agentic engagement (teacher- and student-reported). Students' week-to-week perceived structure positively predicted week-to-week agentic and behavioral engagement (student-, but not teacher-, reported). These findings indicate the interplay between students' situational engagement and teachers' situational motivating style (i.e., autonomy support and provision of structure). They also suggest greater predictive power for students' situational motivation over the personal trait of proactive personality.

In order to expand previous intraindividual studies of student engagement we investigated students' observed engagement (i.e., on- and off-task behaviour), instructional activities (i.e., teacher-led whole class, individual work, pair-work, student-teacher interaction, assessment, and "other"), and self-reported learning experiences (cognitive engagement, difficulty, competence, emotional engagement, positive and negative emotions), within lessons during one calendar week. Eighteen fourth and fifth grade target students (M[subscript age]=10.1, SD=0.44) were observed every 30 sec during two to four lessons each day for five school days (engagement and instructional activities), on average 66.05 times per lesson (SD=19.16, Range=15-80, n[subscript obs]=14,994) between 9-18 lessons during a week. Simultaneously, students provided 1-3 electronic questionnaire self-reports per lesson (M[subscript self_report]=35.1, SD=12.6, Range=19-52, n[subscript self_report]=631). We regressed observed engagement (0 = off-task, 1 = on-task) on self-reported learning experiences using 3-level (time-points nested in lessons, nested in students) Bayesian logistic regression models in "brms." Observed engagement diminished during lessons, and was predicted by higher cognitive engagement, and instructional activities. As compared to teacher-led instruction, engagement was higher during individual tasks, teacher-supported tasks, and assessments. Overall self-reported and observed engagement within lessons converged, supporting their use in intraindividual research.

Self-efficacy in mathematics is related to engagement, persistence, and academic performance. Prior research focused mostly on examining changes to students' self-efficacy across large time intervals (months or years), and paid less attention to changes at the level of lesson sequences. Knowledge of how self-efficacy changes during a sequence of lessons is important as it can help teachers better support students' self-efficacy in their everyday work. In this paper, we expanded previous studies by investigating changes in students' self-efficacy across a sequence of 3-4 lessons when students were learning a new topic in mathematics (n[subscript Students] = 170, n[subscript Time-points] = 596). Nine classes of Norwegian grade 6 (n = 77) and grade 10 students (n = 93) reported their self-efficacy for easy, medium difficulty, and hard tasks. Using multilevel models for change, we found (a) change of students' self-efficacy across lesson sequences, (b) differences in the starting point and change of students' self-efficacy according to perceived task difficulty and grade, (c) more individual variation of self-efficacy starting point and change in association with harder tasks, and (d) students in classes who were taught a new topic in geometry had stronger self-efficacy at the beginning of the first lesson as compared to those who were taught a new topic in algebra (grade 10), and students in classes who were taught a new topic in fractions had steeper growth across the lesson sequence as compared to those who were taught a new topic in measurement (grade 6). Implications for both research and practice on how new mathematics topics are introduced to students are discussed.

We explore the effect of students' perceived task difficulty on the mathematics self-efficacy -- performance relationship. Specifically, we expand on previous reciprocal effects studies through including students' self-efficacy for different levels of task difficulty in an empirical investigation. We examined students' self-efficacy for easy, medium difficulty, and hard tasks and performance on a national mathematics test in a longitudinal study of 95 Norwegian students from grade 8 to grade 9. We found differential relationships between self-efficacy for different levels of task difficulty and national test performance. In support of the 'skill development' model, grade 8 national test performance predicted grade 9 self-efficacy for medium and hard, but not easy, tasks. While mastery experiences are likely to arise more easily on easier tasks, such experiences are likely to matter more on harder tasks. Our findings highlight the importance of supporting students' engagement with challenging tasks to strengthen both their performance and self-efficacy.

Background: Student engagement denotes active participation in academic work through commitment and involvement in learning tasks (Appleton et al., 2006, "Journal of School Psychology," 44, 427). This study looks at questions such as whether engagement experiences in one lesson have an effect on the next lesson. In the present study, process-oriented analyses were conducted to examine lower secondary school students' engagement experiences and the stability of those experiences from one lesson to the next. Aims: (1) To what extent are students' engagement experiences, in terms of behavioural and cognitive engagement, emotional engagement, and disaffection, stable from one lesson to the next (autoregressive cyclic effects)? (2) What are the cross-lagged relationships (dynamic effects) between engagement experiences from one lesson to the next? Sample: The sample consisted of 56 Finnish lower secondary school students. The students provided ratings of their engagement experiences at the end of each lesson for one week (5 days, 975 ratings). Each student rated, on average, 17.4 lessons (SD = 5.67). Methods: We specified multilevel dynamic structural equation models with random slopes. Results: The models showed small significant sustainability in behavioural and cognitive engagement, emotional engagement, and disaffection from one lesson to the next, regardless of subject matter and teacher continuity. Higher behavioural and cognitive engagement in a lesson also had a self-diminishing effect on disaffection. Conclusions: The present study provides valuable information to teachers by showing that an experience in one lesson can have an effect on subsequent ones.

This paper uses nationally representative survey data of adults Internet use in Britain to examine current patterns in the uptake of lifelong learning via the Internet. We develop and test a model that accounts for structure, agency and outcomes using structural equation modelling to address two questions: (1) how structure (as measured by age, gender, SES, Education and ACORN) is related to personal and capital enhancing outcomes of learning online; and (2) how agency (as measured by digital skills and engagement with online learning) mediates this relationship. We demonstrate that social structure remains an important factor in understanding patterns of uptake and outcomes of online learning, alongside an individual's agentic behaviours. We suggest that countries such as the UK, which have become overly focused on individual interventions to increase the uptake of lifelong learning via the Internet, are going in the wrong direction. Such interventions have failed in the past, and we suggest that they will continue to do so unless policy makers reconceptualise lifelong learning and the Internet in ways that take social structures into account.

Going beyond previous studies, we investigated differential effects of teacher self-efficacy (TSE) across the three basic dimensions of educational equality in student engagement, instructional strategies and classroom management in East and South-East Asian, Anglo-Saxon and Nordic country clusters in a cross-cultural analysis. It was found that all three domains of TSE show different patterns of associations in relation to teacher, classroom, principal and school predictors across the three country clusters. Most variation occurred within the classroom and principal predictors, whereas the teacher and school predictors were more homogeneously related to the three country clusters and the three domains of TSE. However, there were more similarities between the Nordic and Anglo-Saxon clusters than the East and South-East Asian clusters and any of the other two. Cultural values, as found in the GLOBE study and by Hofstede, were used as a cultural framework to interpret the differences occurring in the country clusters.

While completing a science test and science survey, 155 high school students wore a biometric wristband (measuring electrodermal activity; EDA) and self-reported their science self-efficacy and science anxiety. Adopting a challenge-threat appraisal perspective and latent profile analysis, we explored how students were psychologically (self-efficacy, anxiety) and physiologically (EDA) oriented to science. We identified three groups (profiles), representing different challenge-threat profiles. The largest group was the 'composed challenge-and-threat' group (modest EDA, average anxiety, average self-efficacy). The next largest was the 'aroused high-threat' group (elevated EDA, elevated anxiety, low self-efficacy). The third represented 'composed high-challenge' students (modest EDA, elevated self-efficacy, low anxiety). The aroused high-threat group scored significantly lower than composed high-challenge and composed challenge-and-threat groups in science test performance and flow. Notably, the composed high-challenge and composed challenge-and-threat groups did not significantly differ in test performance; however, the composed high-challenge group was significantly higher in flow than the composed challenge-and-threat group.

Whether intended by education policy (e.g., via school entrance examinations) or unintended (e.g., via social stratification), selection effects in education (who goes where, gets what, and how much) shape educational opportunities – influencing the life chances of individuals and groups, and the structure of societies. However, within the quantitative approach to educational research, current statistical methods can struggle to simultaneously evaluate both the presence and impacts of these effects. In turn, this methodological limitation impedes efforts to facilitate equality of educational opportunity. This paper responds with a critical overview of types of selection effects in education, their consequences for educational opportunity, and the statistical methods used for their identification. Two empirical illustrations show how a new statistical method ("airbag moderation") can enable better detection and evaluation of selection effects in education and help direct future research into selection effects in education with a focus on opportunities for equality of educational opportunity. In order to advance our understanding of educational processes, we present a tutorial of intraindividual variability. An adaptive educational process is characterised by stable (less variability), and a maladaptive process is characterised by instable (more variability) learning experiences from one learning situation to the next. We outline step by step how we specify a multilevel structural equation model of state, trait and individual differences in intraindividual variability constructs, which can be appropriately fitted to intraindividual data (e.g., time-points nested in persons, intensive longitudinal data). In total 285 primary school students' (Years 5 and 6) completed the Learning Experience Questionnaire using handheld computers, on average 13.6 learning episodes during one week (SD = 4.6; Range = 5-29; nepisodes = 3,433). We defined mean squared successive differences (MSSD) for each manifest indicator of task difficulty, competence evaluation and intrinsic motivation. We also demonstrate how to specify multivariate models for investigating convergent validity of the variability constructs. Overall, our study provides support for intraindividual variability as a construct in its own right, which has the potential to provide novel insight into students' learning processes.

Make-believe play has been theorized to promote self-regulation skills and other positive child outcomes. In this study, we examine the make-believe play approach featured in the "Tools of the Mind" (Tools) early childhood curriculum, which identifies students' self-regulation cultivation among its core programmatic aims. Using data from 42 classrooms in the United States, we specified latent growth models to investigate the association between Tools make-believe play and children's self-regulation development throughout pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade (N = 646 students aged between four and seven years old). We found that higher implementation frequency and fidelity of Tools play predicted less self-regulation growth. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.

With a growing interest in research on educational processes, there is a need to overview suitable latent variable models for students' learning experiences in real-time. This tutorial provides an introduction to intraindividual (multilevel) structural equation models (ISEM) for the analysis of process data (e.g. intensive longitudinal, intraindividual, diary, or person-period data) collected in educational settings. Using example data on 202 students' ecological momentary assessment of 10 to 24 reports (M = 14.9, SD = 3.2), of controlled (extrinsic) and autonomous (intrinsic) motivation the following models are presented: (1) measurement models and covariate effects models; (2) models for fixed, random, and moderator effects; and (3) models for reciprocal effects of chronologically ordered data. Step-by-step instructions for modelling, and substantive interpretations are given. Overall, ISEM establishes an important window into research on real-time educational processes.

This paper presents a new methodological model termed Airbag Moderation: That the relationship between two variables varies as a function of a third, and that this third variable depends upon one of the others. Airbag Moderation extends and bridges a number of theories and it can be implemented using existing statistical models and software packages. Airbag Moderation is more suitable than Moderation for conceptualizing and testing a range of theories, interventions, and policies across educational, social, and behavioural research. An empirical example demonstrates the effectiveness of UK Sure Start Children's Centres as an intervention in the context of financial disadvantage and the internalizing behaviours of preschoolers. Parallel statistical implementation follows via two Structural Equation Models featuring either a statistical interaction term or a random coefficient. Both indicate that greater use of a Children's Centre is a significant Airbag Moderator of the relationship between financial disadvantage and internalizing behaviours in preschoolers.

Using mobile technology and experience sampling in junior high school, real-time motivation and engagement were explored at four-levels: between lessons (up to 2 lessons per day; Level 1), between days (5 days per week; L2), between weeks (4 weeks; L3), and between students (113 students; L4). Findings for a 'random effects' model revealed substantial variance between students (M = 67%), followed by variance between lessons (M = 29%), with little variance between days and between weeks (M = 2%). In a 'fixed and random effects' model, we explored the roles of prior general academic motivation and engagement as well as ability and socio-demographics. Findings revealed that prior general academic motivation and engagement played a significant role in students' real-time motivation and engagement in mathematics and English and reduced between-student variance by about half. Gender (females), ability (high), and socioeconomic status (high) were also associated with higher real-time motivation and engagement.

We investigated longitudinal relations between siblings' problem and prosocial behavior, measured by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, among different sibship sizes in the UK's Millennium Cohort Study. We identified 3436 families with two children and 1188 families with three children. All children (cohort members and their older sibling [OS]) had valid data on behavior at two time points (in 2004 and 2006). Using structural equation model, we found that for internalizing and externalizing problems, OSs (MOS1 = 6.3 years, MOS2 = 9.1 years at T1) exerted a dominant effect on younger siblings (Mage = 3.12 years at T1; 49.7% boys) across sibship sizes. For prosocial behavior, there was OS dominance in two‐child families and youngest sibling dominance in three‐child families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated teacher effects (magnitude, predictors, and cumulativeness) on primary students' achievement trajectories in Chile, using multilevel cross-classified (accelerated) growth models (four overlapping cohorts, spanning Grades 3 to 8; n = 19,704 students, and 851 language and 812 mathematics teachers, in 156 schools). It was found that teacher effects on achievement growth are large, exceeding school effects. Also, the contribution of teachers to student achievement growth was found to accumulate over time. The study advances the field by exploring teacher effects in the context of an emerging economy, contributing further evidence on the properties of teacher effects on student achievement growth and demonstrating the combined use of accelerated longitudinal designs, growth curve approaches, and cross-classified and multiple membership models.

This study investigates school effects on primary school students' language and mathematics achievement trajectories in Chile, a context of particular interest given its large between-school variability in educational outcomes. The sample features an accelerated longitudinal design (3 time points, 4 cohorts) together spanning Grades 3 to 8 (n = 19,704 students in 156 schools). The magnitudes of school effects on students' growth trajectories were found to be sizeable (generally larger than school effects in Western industrialised countries) and moderately consistent across school subjects. School composition effects on student achievement status were found for both school subjects. However, there was no evidence of composition effects on student achievement growth. The study provides new evidence on the size and nature of school effects in a developing country context based on state-of-the-art methods (i.e., accelerated longitudinal and growth curve models).

Students' self-efficacy expectations (SEE) in mathematics are associated with their engagement and learning experiences. Going beyond previous operationalisations of SEE we propose a new instrument that takes into account not only "facet-specificity" (expectations related to particular competences or skills) and "strength" (confidence of the expectations), but also "level" (perceived task difficulty) of these expectations as proposed by Bandura ("Self-efficacy: The exercise of control," W. H. Freeman & Co, New York, 1997; "Self-efficacy beliefs of adolescents," Information Age Publishing, Greenwich, 2006). In particular, we included level-specific items referring to perceived difficulty on a subsequent national test in mathematics. In total 756 Norwegian grade 5, 8, and 9 students completed the "Self-Efficacy Gradations of Difficulty Questionnaire." We fitted plausible multitrait-multimethod models using structural equation models. The best fitting model included three factors representing levels of perceived difficulty, and a-priori specified correlated uniquenesses representing four facets. The facets related to problem solving or students' self-regulation skills during the test in order to accomplish the following: (1) complete a certain number of problems, (2) solve tasks of a certain challenge, (3) concentrate, and (4) not give up for a certain amount of time. The results indicated that three correlated constructs representing levels of SEE are associated with scores on national tests in mathematics, and that the strongest association is between national test scores and medium level SEE. Taking level (difficulty) into account broadens our understanding of the self-efficacy construct, and allows investigation into differential relationships between SEE and performance.

Most educational climate research is conducted among (day school) students who spend the bulk of their young lives outside of school, potentially limiting the amount of climate variance that can be captured. Boarding school students, on the other hand, spend much of their lives at school and thus offer a potentially unique perspective on educational climate. The present study comprises an international sample (United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia) of 3,274 high school students from 121 boarding houses nested under 21 schools. The study is a multilevel one that explores variance in boarding house motivation, engagement, and social climate at multiple levels of a nested educational structure: student, boarding house, and school. Once sociodemographic, prior achievement, personality, and boarding characteristics were entered as covariates, findings showed that on all climate measures there is greater variation from student-to-student than there is from house-to-house or school-to-school. Interestingly, house climate ratings tended to vary more from school-to-school, than from house-to-house. Of the covariates, gender, personality, and time spent in boarding school predicted numerous motivation, engagement, and social climate factors. Overall, findings suggest that boarding house climate is very much in the eye of the individual boarder.

In concert with other Latin American countries, Brazil has developed and implemented its own national assessment system for the purpose of monitoring, evaluating and improving their educational system. Prova Brasil is a census-based bi-annual assessment of Portuguese and mathematics achievement of middle school students in Brazil accompanied by four background surveys of students, teachers, principals and schools. This study uses the Prova Brasil assessment data to evaluate the Brazilian educational policy objectives of improved educational achievement through increased school resources using the North-Eastern state of Paraiba, one of the country's poorest regions, as a sample base. We analysed a sample of 166,354 students in 740 schools over three time points (2007, 2009 and 2011) and two grade levels (grades 4 and 8) separately. Predictor variables were entered hierarchically into two level multilevel models. The study found that infrastructure and academic resources significantly predicted Portuguese and mathematics achievement. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence that school resources have an impact on educational outcomes in the developing world, in contrast to the lack of evidence for impact in developed countries. The study is limited in a number of ways and therefore results should be interpreted with caution primarily due to the cross-sectional nature of the data, the voluntary and low-stakes nature of the testing, and the fluctuating student sample sizes.

Self-regulation, defined as volitional control of attention, behavior, and executive functions for the purposes of goal-directed action (Blair & Ursache, 2011), is associated with multiple school-related outcomes (Calkins, Howse, & Philippot, 2004; Diamond & Lee, 2011; McClelland & Tominey, 2011). For example, children with robust self-regulation have been shown (Fisher, Hirsh-Pasek, Newcombe, & Golinkoff, 2013; Ramani, 2012) to more cooperatively participate in classroom activities, sustain focus on tasks (Bierman, Nix, & Greenberg, 2008; Drake, Belsky, & Fearon, 2014), and exhibit reduced behavioral issues (Feng et al., 2008; Ponitz, McClelland, Matthews, & Morrison, 2009). Conversely, lower levels of self-regulation skills are associated with externalizing behaviors (Flouri, Midouhas, & Joshi, 2014; Olson & Lunkenheimer, 2009), diminished attention (Raver et al., 2011; Tough, 2012), and lower academic achievement (Kim, Nordling, Yoon, & Kochanska, 2014; Nota, Soresi, & Zimmerman, 2004; Soares, Vannest, & Harrison, 2009). In addition to academic outcomes, children with poor self-regulatory competencies are more likely to have worse health and financial outcomes in adulthood (Moffitt, Arseneault, & Caspi, 2011; Schlam, Wilson, Shoda, & Mischel, 2013). Given the role of self-regulation in promoting both child and adult outcomes, early intervention in preschool contexts holds considerable promise for improving a child's development trajectory. As Heckman noted, early "skill begets skill; learning begets learning" (Heckman & Masterov, 2007, p. 3). Consequently, small self-regulatory differences in early childhood can be magnified to progressively larger differences over time (Alexander, Entwisle, & Kabbani, 2001; O'Shaughnessy, Lane, Gresham, & Beebe-Frankenberger, 2003). Thus, early childhood emerges as an especially critical period in which to intervene. one An early childhood curriculum emphasizes self-regulation cultivation as its paramount aim: "Tools of the Mind" (Tools). Since its development in 1993, Tools has been adopted in parts of the United States, Canada, and South America. Twenty U.S. states now have at least one Tools school; in certain areas such as Washington DC, Tools has been implemented in the majority of local preschools (Tools of the Mind, 2015). In the face of the program's proliferation, it is important to establish evidence of Tools' effectiveness on hypothesized outcomes. That is, does Tools enhance children's self-regulation and academic outcomes as compared with traditional 'business-as-usual' or other program curricula? This systematic review aims to be the first to address this question.

Background: Previous research has indicated that although academic buoyancy and student's achievement are associated, the relationship is relatively modest. Aims: We sought to determine whether another construct might link academic buoyancy and student's achievement. Based on prior theoretical and empirical work, we examined a sense of control as one possible linking mechanism. Sample: The study analysed data from 2,971 students attending 21 Australian high schools. Methods: We conducted a cross-lagged panel design as a first means of disentangling the relative salience of academic buoyancy, control, and achievement (Phase 1). Based upon these results, we proceeded with follow-up analyses of an ordered process model linking the constructs over time (Phase 2). Results: Findings showed that buoyancy and achievement were associated with control over time, but not with one another (Phase 1). In addition, control appeared to play a role in how buoyancy influenced achievement and that a cyclical process may operate among the three factors over time (Phase 2). Conclusion: The findings suggest that control may play an important role in linking past experiences of academic buoyancy and achievement to subsequent academic buoyancy and achievement.
